Petersfield U11 Girls v Hursley Park

The sun finally shone at the Heath ground allowing the younger of the Petersfield girl’s teams to complete their 1^st match of the season under hot conditions on Sunday. With 3 debutants in Eleanor, Grace and Genny the team had a new look about it as they took on a more experienced and slightly older Hursley Park side. New Captain Olivia Wadey lost the toss and opened the batting well scoring 4 4’s in her opening stand of 39 in 4 overs with Laura Bates and no wickets were lost until the introduction of the Hursley strike bowler in the 9^th over, she went on to take 3 wickets with some accurate and quick swing bowling. Some hard hitting and great running from the last pair of Jenny Sinclair and Ella Williams helped Petersfield post a very competitive score of 275 for 5 from their 16 overs.

Hursley started brightly in their reply with only some great fielding by all of the Petersfield girls keeping their opponents in check. Petersfield managed to claw their way back into the game with a deserved run out by debutant Genny, who was the stand out fielder of the day, and a great caught and bowled by Ella Williams. This set up a tense finish and when Laura Bates clean bowled one of the Hursley final pair it looked like Petersfield may take the win however in an exciting last over, which was well bowled under great pressure by Olivia Wadey, Hursley managed to score 3 singles to win the game despite two catches just evading a Petersfield hand.

All of the team played well and should be proud of themselves. Olivia Wadey top scored with 17, and Laura Bates, Emily Anscombe and Ella Williams led the bowling statistics with Genny proving her spirit with some brave fielding throughout the game.

Match Review

Summary

Petersfield U13 had a comfortable win against United Services Portsmouth U13, winning by 8 wickets with nearly 12 overs to spare. A great bowling and fielding display restricted the home team to a below par 48 and with an opening stand of 46 Petersfield were never in any danger.

Detailed report

Due to the poor weather this season this was the Under 13s first match this year. Playing in glorious cricketing weather, against United Services Portsmouth on their lively astro-turf at the Clarence, it was a great way to start the season.

Petersfield won the toss and the captain, Daniel May, put the home side into bat. Petersfield’s opening bowlers of Oliver Simpson and Ben Turk were accurate and lively and it was no surprise when Ben Turk took the opening wicket with a lovely ball that trapped their opening batsman LBW, Oliver Simpson then clean bowled the other opening batsman beating him for sheer pace. By the end of the first 4 overs US Portsmouth had reached 3 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. Petersfield’s 1^st change bowlers of Matt Friend and Harry Richards kept the pressure up with Ben Turk taking a very sharp catch off the bowling of Matt Friend to put the home side under even more pressure. Matt Friends pace and bounce got him another wicket well taken by the wicket keeper Alfie Casson. US Portsmouth then briefly rallied with No. 3 batsman, Conor, hitting 2 fours in one over off some perfectly respectable balls. He was starting to look very dangerous when he misread the spin from Will Morton-Scott and skied the ball into the covers where Harry Richards pouched an excellent catch. The home side did not help themselves when the next batsman was run out after some very sharp work by Daniel Parry. Ben Anscombe clean bowled their next batsman with a peach of a ball. At 30-7 in the 14^th over things looked desperate for the home team but some sensible batting by their late order pushed  the US Portsmouth score up to 48 for 7 off their 20 overs. The Petersfield bowling and fielding display was absolutely exemplary and it was hard to believe that this was their first game of the season.

Chasing a relatively low score it was important that Petersfield were not complacent and stayed positive. The opening pair of Daniel Parry and Ed Milford imposed themselves on the home team’s bowling attack and scored 9 fours between them. The opening stand had reached 46 when Daniel Parry was clean bowled for an attacking 29 runs. This brought Joe Egelstaff out to the crease. One run later Ed Milford was well caught by one of the home players for an excellent 17 runs. Ben Anscombe then hit the next ball for 4 meaning that Petersfield won by 8 wickets with nearly 12 overs to spare.

It was a comprehensive win for Petersfield but the game was played with a great spirit. US Portsmouth kept the pressure up in their fielding and were trying right to the end and they can take great credit for that. Petersfield’s next game is away to Purbrook and they will hope to take the many positives from this game through to their next game.

Petersfield Under 15's V Portsmouth

A young U15 side put in a spirited performance against Portsmouth in their first match of the season, before going down to defeat by 15 runs.

Skipper Alex Thomas won the toss and asked Portsmouth to bat first on a dry, low-bouncing track. Openers Palmer-Goddard and Randall got off to a flyer, scoring 45 off the first three overs and it took an excellent catch by U13 Ben Anscombe off Rob Straw to slow Portsmouth’s momentum.

‘Field’s bowlers gradually tightened their grip, catches were held and, buoyed by two brilliant run-outs from Will Grange, 96 for 5 at the half-way stage became only 120 for 9 after the allotted 20 overs – a tremendous effort by our lads.

Matt Friend (2 for 7) and Dan Parry (2 for 18) bowled impressively on their u15 debuts and received good support from the rest of the bowlers, in particular Straw, Harvey and Pocock, who collected one wicket apiece. Pocock conceded just a single off his 4 overs, a fantastic effort.

In reply, Petersfield openers Thomas and Broadhurst looked comfortable against Pompey’s pace attack, putting on 30 for the first wicket. When both fell to spin, some clean hitting from Dan Parry (11) and a lively 36-run partnership from Josh Bird (25) and Rob Straw (10), gave the U15s a sniff of victory. However the target remained tantalizingly out of range, despite some intelligent batting from Ben Anscombe at the death.

This was an extremely encouraging team effort by the U15s first time out. Playing Portsmouth at St Helens is never an easy task, but the lads showed great appetite for the contest and grew in confidence as the match went on. Work needs to be done on some aspects of the ground fielding and cutting down on the number of extras conceded. But performances like this hold out great promise for the season ahead. Petersfield U11A v Portsmouth U11A

Having been asked to bat by the Portsmouth captain, the Petersfield openers carefully navigated their first competitive overs of the season under a rare May sun. 

The home team bowled tight lines and lengths, but Petersfield kept the scoreboard ticking with sharp ones and twos, finding it hard to reach the boundary on a deceptively slow outfield. The loss of Charles Neville  in the 3rd over brought in Ossian Tate to join Joe Clarke, and the pair built a solid partnership with Tate's ability to hit big increasing the rate and earning him a retirement on 23 in quick time. 

Petersfield accumulated steadily and lost only two more wickets with opener Clarke retiring on 22 in the 14th over after a patient and well constructed innings. The batsmen were unable to accelerate in the last quarter, finding it hard to put bat on ball throughout some quick death bowling. However, a solid 96 for 3 seemed a good return for their twenty overs.

Portsmouth were kept in check for the first few overs, with the bowlers giving little away and Ed Braithwaite's sharp throw from the cover boundary running out Randall scrambling for a third run. The batting side rallied, and good running kept them in touch with the asking rate. Harvey Baker took a good catch off a thick edge running around from third man but Portsmouth continued to bat patiently and were 48/2 at the halfway point.

Petersfield needed wickets, and we're rewarded in the 13th over. First, a bamboozler from Oscar Amis castled the Portsmouth batsman. The new batsman hoicked his first ball over Tommy Matthews at mid-on who chased, turned and threw down the wicket. With Petersfield on a team hat-trick, Amis got his next ball to climb sharply and a big top edge was well taken by Thomas Stevens at fine leg. 

Portsmouth recovered well from the loss of 3 in 3 balls, and put pressure on the fielders with good running between the wickets. The loss of Clarke with a broken finger after a brave stop at cover meant Petersfield would have to see out the remaining overs with only ten on the field, and without their opening bowler.

Needing 5 to win from the last over, the Portsmouth batsman latched on to a no-ball and timed a pull behind square for four.

The home team edged the match with their determination to take risky runs throughout their innings in a tight game of high-quality cricket.

A great effort from Petersfield in their first A league game of the season. Losing by 5 wickets in the final over.

Petersfield 2nd XI v Silchester

Petersfield 2^nd XI vs Silchester

The seconds kick-started their season with an exciting 117-run away win over Silchester.

Losing the toss and put into bat, ‘Field’s young openers, Friend (15) and Thomas (22), built a solid foundation, putting on 42 for the first wicket setting up the middle order for an onslaught on the Silchester attack.

Silchester’s joy at the double breakthrough was short-lived because this brought Billy Maisey (69) and Shaun Blanks (90 n.o.) to the crease. Maisey, on loan from the firsts, and vice-captain Blanks put on a blistering 146-run partnership for the 3^rd wicket in just 16 overs with seven sixes (one of them, from Blanks, a monster effort that cleared the sight-screen a good 90m away). The innings closed on 230 for 4.

Silchester got off to a brisk start in reply, but were pulled back superbly by Blanks (3 for 9 off 4 overs) and John Maguire (3 for 11 off 5) before finally limping to 113 all out. Special mention for u15 colt, Alex Squires, who took his first wicket in Saturday league cricket and was unlucky not to have had a couple more.

This was a spirited effort by the seconds to record their first win of a rain-disrupted season. They will come up against better opponents than a side which is rebuilding after a turbulent winter, but this is a young, developing ‘Field side, who will have gained a lot from this convincing display.
