The 16s ended the indoor season on a disappointing note, losing to Portsmouth by 6 wickets.
Things started off promisingly enough, with skipper Thomas winning the toss for only the second time this season (admittedly utilising the services of Ben Turk to call correctly!). Thomas and opening partner Broadhurst then got the innings off to a solid start, as they have done all season, before both retired on 25.
However Portsmouth’s change bowlers managed to apply some pressure, restricting our middle/late order, and the innings closed on 109.
Unfortunately it was one of those days when nothing really went to plan with the bowling, and Pompey knocked off the runs with several overs to spare.
So the season finished with Petersfield in 9th place in the league, having won 2 of their 9 matches. The lads shouldn’t be too downhearted by this, however. They know the areas they need to work on, but overall it was an encouraging performance by a young, enthusiastic team, most of whom playing their first season of indoor cricket.
There were some fine individual performances along the way and, if they continue to develop and work hard at their game, they’ll be a force to reckon with in the coming years. And as far as the new outdoor season goes, they should certainly hit the ground running!
From manager Richard Thomas and coach Dave Squires: well done lads.
