Match report: Petersfield vs Hayling Island

The senior indoor side kept up the pressure on second place Portsmouth with a comfortable win against the Islanders.

A strong bowling and fielding effort saw our opponents dismissed for just 68. The wickets were shared between Damian (2), Liam (1) and Will (1), while Shaun, bowling with pace and accuracy, was unlucky not to pick up a scalp. The economy rates of all the bowlers was excellent. Will took a neat catch above his head and Alex grabbed a back-wall rebound as well as a stumping.

In reply, despite losing Will early, Alex (22*) and a well-judged 25 (ret'd) from Chris secured the victory by a margin of 5 wickets.

The win means 'Field have a great chance of finishing third in the division, which would represent a great effort in our first season at this level. Second place is not entirely out of reach but would need Pompey to slip up against already relegated (and winless) Fareham & Crofton B. But all that's for a fortnight's time. As far as this match went, it was another convincing performance from the Red Rose.

RIP Bill Hindley a short message

Message from the club.

There is no doubt that many colts and Petersfield CC benefitted greatly from Bill's sterling work.

For those who did benefit, he introduced high standards and discipline, he was always early and immaculately turned out, all sessions were serious business where training was a discipline.  He also lightened sessions with his dry sense of humour.

He never lost his enthusiasm for the game.  Even in his 70s he was keen for a game to go on despite impending rain and miserable conditions; when most others wanted to call it off.  He was also generous to opposition youngsters offering advice, sometimes during a game.

He was a much appreciated and good friend to Petersfield cricket club who was a great ambassador for cricket and gave his time generously to the huge benefit of many of our youngsters.
