Petersfield 2s continued their superb season with another win in Regional Division 2 South league.Having lost 5 of the top 6 batsmen to a combination of illness, family issues and call ups to the 1s, Petersfield faced Old Netley and Highfield at the Heath.

Nicky Caddick (2-24) continued his fine form from last week removing N lebourne (1) clean bowled in the 2nd over. Nicky and Oscar Windebank (2-27) bowled very well and in the 9th over Oscar clean bowled Aliash (16).

The opening bowlers were causing issues for the top order of Old Netley reducing them to 36-4 in the 14th over. Most notable of the wickets was Andy Butcher stumping Chris Boon for 10 yards behind the stumps of fast bowler Nicky Caddick!  

Jessie Singh (38) put on 33 for the 5th wicket with Z Ahmed (6) before Chris Wood got his first of 4 wickets as Ahmed was easily caught at mid off by Christie Salmon. Chris Wood then snapped up the next 3 wickets in 5 overs as he reduced Old Netley to 73-7 (including Singh clean bowled). Spin twin Chris Russell (1-31) was getting no luck at the other end until he had skipper Ben Shwartz (9) caught at mid on by Dave Squires low down. Skipper Richard Stephens (1-1) introduced himself and picked up the final wicket in the last over superbly caught at deep midwicket. Old Netley ended on 109

In a change of personnel at the top of the order Dave Squires (24) opened with Chris Wood (1) the pair put on 19 for the first wicket before Chris middled an off drive straight at the fielder who missed the ball but caught it off his body. Squires with Chris Russell (66 not out) kept the pressure on the Old Netley bowlers and fielders with some quick singles and punishing anything wayward with some nice shots for 4.

The pair put on 50 for the 2nd wicket before Squires misjudged a full toss to be clean bowled in the 16th over. Omar Iqbal (16 not out) joined Chris at the wicket and the pair took Field home in the 27th over with Chris Russell hitting the winning runs. Field picked up maximum points (24) to keep them at least in 2nd place with other results not in yet.

U19 T20: Portsmouth vs Petersfield Panthers

The Panthers showed their claws but went down fighting against a high-class Portsmouth outfit in their opening T20 match at a dank, miserable and windy St Helens.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Portsmouth openers Smitherman (28) and Farrant (50 ret'd) tore into the bowling, the ball flying to all parts of the Portsmouth ground. One leg-side heave from Farrant ended up on the 5th green of the neighbouring pitch and putt, scattering the Sunday afternoon golfers in the process.

In the face of this onslaught, Ollie Simpson held his nerve and, continuing his good form of recent weeks, bowled his four overs straight taking 1 for 32 – an excellent effort in the circumstances.

J Marston (48), Collier (22) and Prentice (35) continued to take the attack to the Panthers and, if anything, the ball flew even faster and further. So great credit to Turk (1 for 40), Cox (1 for 34, who was unlucky not to pick up a couple more) and Caddick (0 for 34) for keeping a lid on the carnage to some degree.

Fielding was often a hazardous occupation on St Helens' fast but uneven outfield and sighting the T20 pink ball was difficult in the dark, gusty conditions, which no doubt was a factor as 'Field put down at least 4 chances in the deep.

However special mention should go to Ben Anscombe, who held onto two catches at deep mid-wicket, the second of which a fantastic, running effort. Keeper Thomas also took a sharp chance standing up to Turk to dismiss skipper Marston, who showed some good sportsmanship in walking.

The lads scrapped hard to the end, never dropping their heads, typified by Matt Friend taking 2 wickets off the last 2 balls of the innings. Portsmouth finished on 215 for 5 off their 20 overs, a formidable total.

The Petersfield top order had their work cut out against Portsmouth first XI players A Marston and Prentice – some the older 'Field players will remember Prentice playing for Hambledon taking 7 for 4 in an U15 match – but opener Thomas, severe on anything short, pulling and driving powerfully, held the innings together with a fine 53 ret'd off 45 balls.

Although it was virtually impossible to keep up with the required rate, Simpson, Cox and especially Matt Friend (26), who had a fine all-round game, struck some lusty blows and never once did the boys take a backward step against their opponents. The Panthers eventually battled their way to a fighting 148 with the help of a couple of vintage Caddick reverse sweeps.

So, a loss by 67 runs, but to put this into some kind of perspective, our lads were up against at least 5 Portsmouth first teamers, who play Southern Premier Div 2, and often gave as good as they got. It was a gutsy performance showing lots of character against quality opposition and the Panthers should be very proud of their efforts.

Petersfield Crush Old N & Highfield To Get Back To Winning Ways

In the absence of the skipper Damian Carson, brother Dominic took charge of a one-side affair at the Heath this week. Batting first on a dry, hot day was an easy decision for Carson but the wicket would still prove helpful to the bowlers as the pitch wore.

The Petersfield side had an especially youthful look to it this week, with the combined aged of the openers totalling 33. Alex Thomas made a cautious, assured 22 before being caught at square leg in the 21st over but his 15 year old partner Gabe Broadhurst proved more fluent on the day and would steal the show. Broadhurst ran the Highfield openers backward of point and then, as their length waned, drove sweetly through the covers. At the half way point Petersfield were 90-1. Ash Spencer and Broadhurst then came together to share a partnership of 130 at over a run a ball, tucking into the off-spin of Ben Schuarz (3-0-37); their positivity was rewarded on the Heath’s fast outfield. Spencer was eventually stumped in the closing overs for 78 from 63 deliveries with Gabe Broadhurst achieving a majestic 121 before being run out by a sharp Highfield throw. Andy Barnes and Shaun Blanks than capped off a ruthless batting display with a few lofted drives taking the total to 266-3.

In reply Old N & Highfield never really looked in contention. Shaun Blanks and Ben Turk repeatedly beat the outside edge before Turk (6-2-14) removed Phil Comer’s stumps. Mark Stanley then put the match out of sight by drying up one end (6-1-7). Thereafter it was just about how many bowling points Petersfield could take from the game. Keith Gumbe duly obliged (10-4-16), finding plenty of turn and bounce to the Highfield right-handers; Oli Simpson (another under 17), took a fine diving catch off Gumbe. With his tail up, Simpson then enjoyed his opportunity to play first eleven cricket with 5-1-31. Although Old N & Highfield wickets continued to tumble they remained positive and good sports, eventually all out for 102 in the 35th over.

Broadhurst and Turk are products of Petersfield’s extensive Junior and Colt sections. At just 15 they are not just exciting prospects for the future but are clearly delivering at the senior level now. 

Petersfield remain 4th in County Division 2 and will play Amport away next week.

2s stay second

Petersfield 2s remained 2nd in the league after a comprehensive 10 wicket victory away to Sarisbury.

Sarisbury decided to bat first on a glorious day at the Rec in Stubbington with a slight cross breeze. Opening bowlers Oscar Windebank (2 wickets for 37 from 10 overs) and Nicky Caddick (4 wickets for 2 runs off 6 overs) ripped through the top order with more unplayable deliveries than this reporter has seen in all the other matches this season. Nicky Caddick was almost unplayable in his spell and was about 2 inches from getting a hat-trick and 5 fer in one ball.

 Frank Straw (2 for 5 from 4 overs) took over from Nicky and with his first ball removed left hander G Saunders (9). In his 3rd over he trapped S Andrews (0) plumb in front of middle stump. After Oscar had bowled out, Steve Gibson (2 for 0 off 5 balls) cleaned up the final 2 wickets either side of drinks. Sarisbury made 51 in their 20.5 overs

After a quick turnaround, Toby Austin (13 not out) and Will Rice (34 not out) showed no mercy and chased the total down in 8.1 overs. The 2s then had a nice tea and shuffled off back to the Heath to support and heckle the 1s at the Heath.

Man of the match Oscar Windebank for giving the opposition some much needed runs ;-)

Match report: Petersfield First XI vs Compton & Chandlers Ford

Petersfield lost by 4 wickets to Compton & Chandlers Ford on Saturday in a hard-fought, sometimes feisty County Division 2 encounter at the Heath.

Winning the toss and batting first on another warm day, ‘Field openers Damian Carson (25) and Broadhurst (24) started carefully on a wicket where scoring was sometimes difficult. Several batsmen got starts but no one managed to go on and make a major score against an attack in which Andy Gorty took 5 wickets.

Chasing Petersfield’s total of 190, C&CF accumulated steadily. Gumbe (2 for 43) and Stanley (1 for 24) again bowled well but despite Dom Carson’s two neat slip catches, and Broadhurst and Gumbe combing well to run out Rathod, ‘Field’s opponents overhauled their score in the 43rd over without too many alarms along the way.

After a match with plenty of talking points and where nine batsmen across the two sides scored twenties yet the highest score was C&CF opener Neethling’s 31, Petersfield will look to return to winning ways next Saturday, at home to Old Netley & Highfield.

Petersfield 2s lost their unbeaten record to Salthill in West Sussex today.

The day had started well with Captain Richard Stephens winning the toss and deciding to bat first with Will Rice (58) and Toby Austin (32) putting on 84 for the first wicket at 7 an over with some crisp and well timed shots which flew away on a very fast outfield (anything beating the fielder was a boundary). Will Rice then hit the ball to mid on and went for the single but was run out as the fielder hit the stumps directly leaving Will just short of his ground.

Ben Anscombe (51) fresh from his first 50 for the club last week, joined Toby in the middle. The pair put on 13 before Steve King (1 for 38) tooking a stunning one handed return catch. The scoring rate had slowed but Field were still going at a good rate. Ben and Will Jameson (22) added 38 before Will was adjudged LBW to Ashley Court (1 for 49).

Omar Iqbal (16) and Ben Anscombe took the total along to 194 before a mini collapse as the lower order tried to add vital runs to the total all going at better than a run a ball but the last 5 wickets fell for 22 to leave Field on 216, which in hindsight was 30 or so runs short bearing in  mind the very very fast outfield.

Petersfield got off to the perfect start with Oscar Windebank (1-49) removing A Wallgrove with the 4th delivery of the innings as he got one to jag back at the batsmen to remove his off stump. Ashley Court (48) and S Richardson (13) then pushed the score along to 76 punishing anything short and wide. The pair scoring at a very similar rate to Petersfields. Liam Charles (3-43) then came and looked to have turned the game in Fields favour removing Court and Richardson in 2 overs.

Unlike Field. Salthill kept the run rate very high continuing to punish anything wayward from the Field bowlers. Liam then removed L Carter (23) to rekindle Field's hopes of forcing a win but this did not last long as Salthill batsmen all continued to bat well despite some tidy overs from Will Rice (0-22) and Richard Stephens (1-50). Richard removed P Elsbury (33) but it was not enough to save Field as J Holder (37 not out) and P Fisk (34 not out) saw Salthill comfortably home with 5 overs to spare.

Field drop down to 2nd and hopefully they will look to bounce back away at Sarisbury next week to keep their promotion drive going.
