Result:

Petersfield U15 – 155 for 4; Portsmouth U15 – 114 for 5

Petersfield U15 Won by 41 runs

Petersfield U15 maintained their good run with their 3^rd victory in succession beating 10 man Portsmouth by 41 runs at the Heath on Friday night. The win was achieved despite losing Ned Harvey to an injured finger during the warm up. Portsmouth won the toss and decided to insert Petersfield. The Petersfield openers, Gabriel Broadhurst and Dan Parry, started briskly scoring 27 runs off the first 2 overs with Broadhurst in particular punishing anything lose from the Portsmouth bowlers. Dan Parry played an effective supporting role and helped keep Broadhurst on strike. However with the score on 72 in the 9^th over Dan Parry shuffled across his stumps and was clean bowled by Joe Thompson for 22 runs (scored in only 16 balls). Two balls later Gabriel Broadhurst had to retire for 50 not out (scored in 44 balls) and so half way through the innings Petersfield had two new batsmen. Josh Bird entered the fray hit a very crisp boundary and was then caught by the Portsmouth keeper off the impressive Matt Chapman (3 overs 1 wicket for 7 runs) for 6. Rory Claasen came out to bat and was unfortunately run out without troubling the scorer and at 79 for 3 it looked like the wheels were coming off the Petersfield innings. Oliver Simpson and Joe Mayell started to rebuild the Petersfield innings before Joe Mayell was bowled by Rocken-Suss for 8 runs with the score on 99 during the 15^th over. Oliver Simpson (37 not out from 22 balls) and Matt Friend (27 not out from 16 balls) pulverised the final few Portsmouth overs with 30 runs coming from the final two overs with Matt Friend scoring 3 fours in the second to last over and Oliver Simpson scoring 4 fours in the final over. This meant that Petersfield ended their innings on 155 for 4 off their 20 overs achieving maximum batting points for the first time this season.

Portsmouth began their reply steadily against the accurate bowling of Tom Pocock (4 overs 0 for 10) and Ollie Simpson (4 overs 0 for 22). After 6 overs, Alex Squires (4 overs 1 for 21) the Petersfield captain brought Dan May (4 overs 2 for 29) and himself on to replace the opening bowlers. Anything short from Dan May was punished by the Portsmouth batsman to the short leg-side boundary despite heroic fielding efforts from Gabriel Broadhurst. One of the Petersfield coaches could be heard from the boundary bemoaning the fact that Petersfield were keeping a slip (a view shared by Dan's dad who was umpiring at square leg) when Dan May enticed an edge from the dangerous Dan Wallace which was snaffled up Dan Parry at first slip. In his next over the May / Parry combination worked again to oust Joe Kooner-Evans who had scored a rapid 15 off only 11 balls. This proved that on occasions coaches can get it wrong and more importantly the need to set fields for good balls not bad balls. Alex Squires, who was bowling very tidily, then got in on the act bowling Charlie Slim for 14 runs. This left Portsmouth at 77 for 3 off 14 overs. Matt Friend (2 overs 1 for 5) bowled very economically and got Jackson Rocken-Suss out for 1 and then some very neat fielding from Ollie Simpson ran out the stubborn Matt Chapman for a very well-crafted 21 from 38 balls. Adam Joy (22 not out) and Sam Sparks (5 not out) then saw Portsmouth through to a respectable 114 for 5 off their 20 overs. It was a good win for Petersfield although the 10 byes and 8 no-balls could have proved costly.

Petersfield hosted Wherwell on a fine day at the picturesque Heath looking to continue their push up the league table. Petersfield skipper Jack Hannam won the toss and elected to bowl on a hard fast track. Cristie Salmon made the breakthrough in the 7th over removing opener John held well at square leg by Nicky Caddick.

Salmon picked up his second accounting for Beckingham in the 11th over to a great catch behind from Henry Austin. The dangerous Taylor looked set before being sent back to the pavilion LBW to Jack Hannam for 15. Hannam turned to Nigel Stone in the search for further wickets who responded with three in two overs destroying the Wherwell top order.

Despite being 57 for 7 the lower order dug in with key man Nicel playing a vital innings finishing last man out for 40 to the returning Salmon. The visitors finished on a below par 132 but at least gave themselves something to bowl at. Nigel Stone recording fine figures of 4-18 from his seven overs.

Petersfield took to the crease knowing that batting the overs would give them a strong chance of victory. Rory Newman was unable to repeat last weeks heroics and fell in the 5th over to left searmer Nicel. Henry Shore went 4 balls later LBW to a ball that kept low revealing that this was going to be a difficult track to bat on. Henry Austin and dangerman Blanks both went the following over leaving the home side in tatters. With much to do a mix up between Toby Austin and Andy Barnes left both batsmen at the same end with Barnes also now back in the pavilion.

At 17 for 5 down this brought Hannam together with Toby Austin set on repairing the innings. After seeing off the openers the pair batted for almost two hours showing great patience whilst dispatching the bad ball. Despite various bowling changes the visitors were unable to break through as the hundred partnership came up. Hannam finally fell in the 38th over for 42 with just 8 runs required for victory. Austin (53*) played a sumptuous cover drive bringing up his half century as he and Christie Salmon sealed a dramatic victory.

On the hottest day of the year so far Captain James Stratford -Tuke won the toss and on a very dry pitch and elected to bat first. With both sides in good form it promised to be a good game of cricket and so it proved to be.

James (31) and Rob Anscombe (21) got Petersfield off to a flying start with James hitting some lovely drives off the front foot and Rob putting away any short balls, as the score rattled along at 4 an over. The opening stand was broken on 58 runs as Rob mistimed an on drive to midon having not looked in trouble at all. Paddy May (43) came out to join his captain and showed the sort of form that was seen preseason again punishing anything short and wide. James had been happy to let Paddy score freely but got frustrated at his lack of runs and came down the wicket to Compton’s captain Philip Wilson (3-48 off 9 overs) and was stumped with  the score on 83. Young colt Ben Anscombe (18) came out and started to push the Compton bowling all around the park and with Paddy a willing runner the pair milked the bowling for 5 and 6 an over for a period before Paddy was rapped on the pad by young off spinner Oran Creedon (1-44 off 10).

Oli Shapley (29) continued to push the scoring along as he hit 5 fours in the 20 balls it took him to score 29, he went for a pull shot off opening bowler Jay Dulay (3-36 off 10) only to pick out the square leg fielder perfectly. Marcus Sampson (6) played a couple of nice shots before getting a superb delivery which jagged in from outside off stump to take leg stump but he had kept the scoring rate moving along. Paul Clarke (12) scored quickly again before he and Ben Anscombe got out in successive overs. Dave Squires (10) hit a couple of fours in a breezy knock before he got out trying to repeat the shot. This left Petersfield on 193-8 seven runs short of maximum batting points but very satisfied with their innings.

After tea and with the temperature not really dropping that much Petersfield took to the field to try and defend the total. Compton got off to a similar start as Petersfield going along at around 4 an over before Oli Shapley (4-25 off 10) removed Kevin Read (13) with a full length delivery.

This brought father and son Simon Copland (35) and James Copland (34) together and with the son pouncing on anything short it looked ominous for the Petersfield bowlers as the run rate rose to 6 an over. A couple of half chances went begging as Petersfield were sluggish in the field for the first time this season. Paul Clarke (1-37 off 7) then removed Simon and in the next over Rob Anscombe (2-14 off 5) then bowled James giving Petersfield the jolt in the arm they needed. The scoring rate to win the game had now risen to 5 an over but Compton were not out of the game by any means as Harry Singh (23) and James Atterbury (20) kept the scoreboard moving with some strong hitting. Once the pair were removed by Rob Anscombe and Oli Shapley the result seemed inevitable as Oli and Alex Squires (2-42 off 9.2) wrapped up the victory with the last 6 wickets going down for just 33 runs. The result kept Petersfield in 3rd place in the league.

Moment of the Match - Rob Straw's chase and throw in to run out Jay Dulay a better piece of fielding you really will not see.

Petersfield Sunday XI v Steep

Result:  Petersfield CC - Friendly XI Won  by 14 runs

Petersfield lost the toss and were asked to bat on a grey, overcast and wet afternoon. Captain Marcus Sampson (0) opened the batting with Alex Thomas (35) and although it was a slow start Alex Thomas played some nice pushes to mid-off and watched the ball well as D Collins (1-34 off 9) got some seam movement. Marcus was struggling to get the ball off the square and was finally out in bizarre fashion as he was caught by the keeper playing a sweep shot which hit the back of his bat and looped up. Bob Wemyss (1) gave a return catch to young Jake Campbell (2-27 off 7). Even younger player Gabriel Broadhurst (54) and Alex put on 67 for the 3rd wicket as the pair showed great skill and composure before Thomas got out to John Smith (3-31 off 7). Rory Newman (55) carried on the scoring as he and Gabe put on 80 before Gabe came down the wicket trying to push the score on to give Jhon Cosgrove (1-57 off 8) his only wicket of the day and was stumped as the ball beat his bat on the inside edge.

Christie Salmon (15) played a couple of sweetly timed shots on the leg side before he was bowled by Collins who had returned to the attack to try and get some late wickets. Liam Charles was then pushed up the order (26) and did exactly what his captain wanted as he scored at a run a ball to push the score beyond 200. Rory Newman (56) then got the runs he needed to take him past 50 for the first time before hitting a six off the next ball. As it turned out the scoreboard was wrong and he was actually only on 49 so it was lucky he did not get out as he would have been livid with himself and the scorers. Anyway it was a great moment for the young lad who had been close a few times and deserved the plaudits he got from his teammates and the opposition. The inning finished on 217-8 a good total given the weather and conditions.

After tea and some more rain Petersfield started the defence of their total with Christie Salmon (0-10 off 3) and Josh Phipps (1-25 off 4.5). Opener D Knight (49) played beautifully before nicking the ball off Liam Charles (1-25 off 5) through to keeper Sampson. Keeper T McCubbin (25) became Nick Woodruff’s (5-29 off 8) first wicket as he was bowled. John Smith (7) was then superbly caught at mid-off by Christie as he flung himself full length to take a diving catch to get Petersfield into the match. This was despite some lusty hitting from D Collins (70). When Collins eventually got out to a sharp turning delivery from Nick Woodruff he had put Steep in sight of the the 218 target. Petersfield then responded as Dave Squires (2-47 off 7) returned to the attack to tie down the Steep lower order after being severely tonked by Collins in his initial spell of 4 overs. With Nick Woodruff bowling very well at the other end wickets continued to fall and with victory in site for Petersfield, Marcus turned to his two wicket keepers to bowl and Bob Wemyss and Alex Thomas went for 19 off 2 overs with Bob bowling an 11 ball over. After the comedy of some of the bowling Nick and Josh Phipps returned to the attack to clean up and leave Steep on 203 all out. A good game of cricket played in the right spirit for a Sunday Friendly

Charity Game update

I’m pleased to make a couple of update announcements. Firstly We now have the Petersfield XI (& 12,13 & 14). Our Comedians are also confirmed (they have up to 14 also tbc) and team sheets will be coming out in the next day or so.

 

Thanks to Karen, Dee, Lisbeth, Andy, Oli Shapley, Richard, Christie, Jude who were involved this Saturday/Sunday in fund raising and awareness raising at Rams Walk and prep for next weekend.
