Petersfield Ladies v Tichbourne Park Ladies

Petersfield Ladies entertained Tichbourne Park at the Heath on Sunday and won the toss and invited Tichbourne to bat first on a sunny morning.
The unusual opening bowling pairing of Emma Barrett and Olivia Wadey bowled well with Barrett taking an early wicket in the 4th over. The introduction of Jess Grange in the 9th over transformed the game as, bowling with her usual accuracy Jess took 5 quick wickets 4 of which were clean bowled. This gave the Captain the chance to work her way through a number of bowlers, including debut bowling performances from Janet Duggan and Sophie Watson who both bowled well only conceding 9 runs from their 4 overs. However it proved impossible to keep Jess Grange out of the game as she then ran out Clare Hole with a direct hit from fine leg. This left Tichbourne struggling on 37 for 7 however some patient batting from the opener Dimond, who had watched everything unfold before her, saw Tichbourne advance to 56 before an excellent spell by Lauren Norris (3 overs 1 wicket for no runs) removed Dimond and allowed the returning Olivia Wadey to clean up the tail leaving Tichbourne 69 all out. With only 9 extras conceded and with all of our catches being taken a very happy coach enjoyed the tea break.
Grange and Jackson opened Petersfield’s reply reaching 20 in 5 overs before Grange was dismissed for a quick-fire 13. This brought Wadey Senior to the crease and she took an instant liking to the Tichbourne bowling. Jackson was then bowled by Dimond, leaving Angie Clarke and Wadey to take Petersfield home to win by 8 wickets with 20 overs to spare with Wadey finishing with a superb 34 not out which contained 7 fours.
Overall this was a fine all round team performance with several players rising to the challenge in the absence of a few of our key players however no one could doubt Jess Grange’s player of the match performance.

Senior sides all win

Petersfield Senior Sides prove too good for their opponents as The 1s won by 5 wickets, the 2s 4 wickets, the 3s winning by 42 runs and to top off a great weekend for the club the Ladies beat Titchbourne Park by 8 wickets. This is the first time this season all the senior sides have won on the same weekend. The 1s are now top of County Division Three (north) and the 2s are second in Regional Division Two (north) and both sides are going well and if they can keep up the good form will hopefully give the club another successful season. With the Ladies and 3s getting off the mark with their first wins of the season the future keeps getting brighter as the club look to continue its progress of the last few years.

MATCH REPORT: Petersfield IIs vs Medstead

Petersfield’s Toby Austin was the stand out performer in a hard earned victory over Medstead at the Heath. Austin hit 78 as ‘Field chased down their opponents’ 147 to win by 4 wickets in the regional division 2 encounter.

Winning the toss and inserting Medstead, Windebank quickly removed opener Tingey, caught by skipper Stephens for 2. However Higgins was quickly into his stride and it took a brilliant, tumbling catch running backwards by Gumbe at mid-on to remove the dangerous Medstead player for 33. There surely won’t be a better catch taken all season – it was that good.

Wyatt (28) and Dedman (42*) carried the fight to Petersfield in contrasting styles, but Gumbe bowled superbly (10-2-18-2), well supported by Russell (2 for 35). Gumbe grabbed a second catch and there were also two for Thomas behind the stumps.

In reply Petersfield started slowly against an accurate and varied Medstead attack and lost wickets at regular intervals. However Russell (23) helped to steady the ship and with Austin playing with increasing assurance, victory was achieved in the 39th over, which moves the 2s up to second in the division.

MATCH REPORT: Hawkley vs Petersfield IIs

Hawkley’s beautifully scenic ground somehow managed to escape the heavy showers sweeping through the county and play started on time, Petersfield winning the toss and asking their opponents to bat first on a surprisingly firm surface.

Hawkley’s openers started well and Chris Russell did well to remove the dangerous Humphries for 43, taking a sharp caught-and-bowled at the second attempt. However Evans (30) and Burke (42) continued to score freely and, with Petersfield failing to hold on to some difficult chances, a score of over 220 looked on the cards.

Skipper Stephens then made a crucial breakthrough, bowling Evans, before the heavens opened, resulting in a 45-minute rain delay.

On the resumption of play, Petersfield upped their efforts and ripped through the Hawkley middle-lower order. Stephens picked up another couple (8-2-32-3), Windebank generated some genuine pace and aggression (2 for 31) and some sharp fielding resulted in a couple of run-outs. So, despite not getting two nailed-on stumping decisions, Hawkley finished on 187 from their 42 overs. This meant Petersfield’s rain-reduced target was 142 off 27 overs.

Despite losing opener Ben Anscombe early, Thomas (54) and Will Jameson (43) quickly settled into their stride, rarely looking troubled, putting on a 103 for the second wicket. Thomas played fluently, latching onto any loose deliveries, and Jameson’s innings was notable for its impressive straight hitting, the pair comfortably keeping up with the required run rate.

A late wobble caused hearts to flutter as 4 wickets fell in quick succession but the hard work had been done, and Stephens and Turk took the side home to claim victory for ‘Field by 5 wickets.

A great team effort and a convincing win, which deserved to push Petersfield into the promotion spots. However, this was the only match played in the division on a wet weekend, so the vagaries of the points system mean the side remains in 4th, which doesn’t really seem a fitting reward. But the confidence gained will put the 2s in good heart for their next opponents, Medstead, who come to the Heath next weekend.

Petersfield 2s up to 4th

kipper Richard Stephens’ Petersfield IIs claimed their fourth victory of the season on the weekend, beating Odiham & Greywell IIs by 4 wickets at the Heath.

With Odiham batting first, Petersfield made early inroads and kept the pressure on throughout. Oscar Windebank, in his first appearance of the summer, led the way taking 6 for 28, bowling superbly with great skill and variety. He was well supported by Ben Turk (1 for 10 off 8 overs) and Keith Gumbe (0 for 16 in 10), who both showed tremendous control in restricting the scoring.

Alex Thomas behind the stumps picked up a couple of sharp catches and a stumping. Jones (27) and Wiltshire (26) offered the main resistance for Odiham, who finished on 109 for 9 off their 42 overs.

Petersfield started positively in reply, Thomas hitting a brisk 32. However wickets kept falling at regular intervals and it wasn’t until Chris Salmon (16*) and Ben Turk (23*) came together for the 7th wicket that the nerves stopped jangling, the pair putting on an unbeaten 33 to take ‘Field home in 25.3 overs.

This was the second time this season that U15 Turk had been involved a tight run chase, and he again showed an excellent temperament under pressure.

As above Petersfield captain Dave Squires lost his first toss of the season and the Sunday XI were asked to take to the field on a scorchingly hot day at the Heath.

Ed Davenport (5 overs-0 wickets-16 runs) continued his fine form for the Sunday XI and bowled well without taking a wicket. Oli Simpson (4-0-16) suprised his captain by announcing he did not like using the new ball ! After bowling 2 good overs Oli requested to come off and was replaced by Ben Turk (7-2-22) who removed D Knight (31) with a beautiful full in swinging delivery. Knight was quickly followed by Steep skipper John Smith (14) who survived a very good LBW appeal but then proceeded to wander down the pitch and after a very sharp piece of thinking, was run out. Tom Mccubin (66 not out) came in and batted very well as he looked to rebuild the innings after the openers had been scoring at 5.5 runs an over before they were both out as above on 54. Toby Austin (6-1-12) then removed P Frost for a duck as Liam Charles took a simple catch in the covers. Young Will Yates (Ben Turks best friend) then came in and showed great maturity and batted for 10 overs for his 9, he was unfortunate as Petersfields bowlers had regained the initiative and pulled the scoring back to 3 an over. With Helen Whititaker (4-0-21) and Simon Dodd (6-0-27) baking Toby up only Mccubin was scoring any runs as he moved quickly along to his 50. Will Rice making his opening bow of the Sunday season also bowled tightly only conceding 7 runs off his 4 overs. Ben Turk then removed his best friend Will Yates off the first ball of his comeback over. Steep finished their innings on 136 on a good pitch and a lot of credit must go to Petersfield for how well they bowled and fielded in the hot temperatures as they could easily have wilted.

After a good and plentiful tea provided by Ed Davenport the teams retook the field suitably fed and watered. Jack Hannam (28) and Will Rice (19) set about knocking the target off and as in the Steep innings got Petersfield off to a flying start before Hannam was caught behind off Will Yates (5-1-9)  as ball bounced unexpectedly off a length. Will Rice then hit a double bouncing delivery from Jonh Cosgrove (7-3-21) straight down skipper John Smiths throat at deep midwicket. He trudged off having looked in fabulous nick. Toby Austin (2) then got a spinning delivery from Cosgrove but could only hit it straight back at the bowler. He was quickly followed by Simon Dodd(0) who edged to the keeper. From 54 for no wicket Petesfield found themselves 57-4 a collapse of England proportions. Oli Simpson (13) and Helen Whittaker (15) took the score along to 81 before SImpson got a delivery then went both ways according to the young man as he lost stumps. Skipper Squires came in looking to repeat his long vigil of last week only to last 10 balls this time despite one sweetly timed cover drive for 4. At that stage a victory looked a long way off with the score on 89-6. Helen continued to bat well and she and Ben Turk (25) took the score along to 98 before Helen was out bowled by the very effective Steep skipper John Smith (7.4-3-31). So it was then all down to Ben Turk, Liam Charles and Alex Squires to try and get their skipper his first home win of the season. Ben and Liam (21 not out) took Petersfield to within 10 runs of victory when Ben holed out to midon trying to hit another 4. This left just Alex Squires (an average of 2 last season) and Liam to see the Sunday XI over the line. Alex blocked 5 balls then there was a big shout for LBW against him. He survived this and the last ball of the over needing just 6 to win. Liam Charles took the scores level as he and Squires scrambled for a couple of 2s. Liam then proceeded to hit John Smith over deep midwicket for 6 to take them home. A good game played between two evenly matched sides that proved even the closet of rivals can get on.

Petersfield u13s lose to Waterlooville

Petersfield U13s v Waterlooville U13s

Petersfield bounced back from the Old Netley result with a superb bowling performance but were not able to defend their first innings total

Waterlooville requested to bat first to allow 3 of their players to get to a football tournament !

Petersfield were happy to help the opposition out and Joe Clarke (4) put on 15 for the first wicket before Clarke mistimed a front foot drive to mid off. Will Milner-Smith (31 retired not out) kept the scoreboard ticking along as Waterlooville bowled a number of wides. The next four batsmen hung around but did not score many runs. Without Will Milner-Smith who showed he could play a controlled innings the Petersfield effort would not have troubled the Waterlooville batters but when he was retired in the 16th over after a good partnership with Max Saint (8 not out) the score was 70. Petersfield were tormented by Matthew Johnstone (3 overs - 3 wickets for 21 runs) and Alistair Wilson (2-2-6) and they finished on 78 runs. The coach drilled in to the lads that they had defended a similar total earlier this season.

Joe Clarke (3.2-1-3)  opened the bowling and removed Rob Quinn (1) in the 3rd over with the score on 15. At the other end Tom Greene (25) was timing the ball superbly well and he punished anything down the leg side. Tommy Mathews (4-1- 20) removed Tom Seve (7) and he was quickly followed by Greene as he lobbed the ball to Cameron Porteous who took a good catch in the covers. The score was on 37-3 and with the big hitting Greene out Petersfield started to believe they could take a win. Max Saint was bowling tightly (4-1-26) along with Ben Kay (2-0-7) who justified his coaches request to the captain to give the lad a bowl having not bowled the last couple of games. Waterlooville captain Will Doyle (14 not out) and Toby Sambles (27 not out) saw Waterlooville to victory but credit has to go to the Petersfield bowlers and fielders who did not concede any wides in their 15.2 overs bowled.
