The 2s suffered an agonising defeat to Langley Manor by 7 runs, which leaves our promotion hopes in the balance.
Losing the toss, amazingly for the first time this season, skipper
Stephens and the Petersfield attack couldn’t prevent 'the Manor' from
making a brisk start but then fought back superbly to bowl them out for
143 – a great effort in the circumstances.
The catching and ground fielding was not up to ‘Field’s usual standards
(the rock-hard, rutted outfield may have played a part in that) but it
was one of the best performances of the season from the bowling unit
against a side that was among the division’s high flyers. Chris Russell
led the way with 4 for 38, but Keith Gumbe (3 for 29) and Chris Wood (2
for 33) weren’t far behind.
Petersfield started cautiously in
reply against an accurate attack on a track that was now showing
appreciable turn and variable bounce. The abrasive conditions meant the
ball was quite soft and scoring was difficult.
Unfortunately
wickets fell at regular intervals and it wasn’t until Russell (36) and
Stephens (31*) bravely took the attack to their opponents with some
clean hitting that the momentum began to shift in Petersfield’s favour.
However we were always a beat or two behind the rate and when Russell
holed out going for another big hit, that was that.
It could have
been worse: Langley Manor 1s scored 434 for 5 in their match! So the
Glorious 2s aren’t quite out of the promotion hunt, but need a max
points win and other results to go in our favour on Saturday. The team
will certainly be giving it everything and fighting to the bitter end at
the Heath against OTs and Romsey 3s.

Presentation Evening 12th September
Presentation evening is fast approaching on
Friday 12th September at Petersfield Rugby club at 7.30pm.
Following positive feedback from last year's event, we are holding the evening at the Rugby Club
again with a hot and cold buffet plus a choice of dessert.
Prices for both
colts and adults are £15 per person. For those members that would like
to bring their partner, there is a special price of £25 per couple.
Dress code is no jeans or trainers, otherwise come as dressy or not as
you like. If you require a vegetarian or other
special diet, please indicate this when requesting your ticket.

PCC presidents day a great success
Presidents Day a great success
Sunday 3rd August and the club came together for the first Presidents day in many a year.
Despite the morning showers the ground was hard and dry as the sun came out on a perfect day for a game of cricket. There were old players, ex-colts (now grown up), current colts, Hampshire and England over 60s a well as the usual Sunday team and club sponsors and supporters.
The toss happened in Nick Blackstad’s (President) head as Dave Squires (Sunday captain) was not involved. The President’s team won the toss and chose to bat, well it was better than watching the president’s side toil in the sun!
As it was, it was the Sunday side who toiled in the sun for the first 10 overs as Jim Smallbone (37) and Chris Wood (35) took a liking to the bowlers and put on 75 for the first wicket. Captain Squires had been hit for 11 in his first over as Jim deposited him over deep long on for a 6 and 4 but Jim then got an edge to Damien Carson (2-29) in the next over to give the Sunday side a break from the onslaught. Squires then removed Chris Wood with a filthy leg side delivery that Chris Wood hit off the back of his bat up in the air to give keeper Josh Collins his second catch in as many overs. David Greetham went for 10 as Squires picked him up with a jaffa of a ball that pitched on middle and hit the top off off stump, too good for the returning player.
1st team opening bowler Shaun Blanks (13) and 3rd team opening bowler Oli Simpson (23) (to a superb running catch by James Stratford-Tuke) came and went as they fell to Damien Carson and Ben Anscombe (1-25) leaving the Presidents XI on 101-4. Herald Journalist (playing his first game for 10 years) Alan Wooler came and went as he was bowled by Sunday stalwart Mark Holloway (1-35). Harry Cartmell, Waitrose (15) came out and hit some nice shots as he and Trevor Foreman overseas player (38 not out) pushed the scoring along to 142. When Harry was run out Alex Squires (0) came out and lasted 3 balls as he gave 11 year old Tom Stratford-Tuke (1-12) his first senior wicket as he was caught at square leg attempting a pull to cow corner! Mike Freeston was caught off Andy Barnes (1-10) and James Stratford-Tuke bowled the last over for just 3 runs to wrap up the innings leaving the Presidents XI on 189-9
At tea there was a real dilemma for all the players, whether to leave the pavillion at all as there was a real slap-up tea supplied by Barbara Blakstad (presidents wife) and Helen Freeston. It was a tea designed to stop the Sunday side from emerging and forfeiting their innings but there were enough youngsters that Dave Squires was forced to leave the pavillion with his team to try and chase down 190 for the win.
Jack Hannam (1st team captain) and James Stratford-Tuke (3rd team captain and Chairman) opened the batting but unfortunately James was out for a diamond duck as Shaun Blanks demolished his stumps with a cracking delivery which would have bowled anyone.
Andy Barnes (50 retired not out) joined Jack Hannam (14) and they both scored as freely as the Presidents XI top order and took the score to 73 before Jack mistimed a pull and was caught at square leg. Andy Barnes had been moving through the gears at the other end scoring a quickfire 50 including 3 sixes and 5 fours as he and Shaun Blanks (2-48) went toe to toe. Having made 50 Andy was asked to retire to give some others a bat (well played Andy). Damien Carson (5) and Ben Anscombe (7) came and went as Chris Wood (2-39) put a stop to the high run rate in conjunction with Jim Smallbone (3-10 off 8 overs !). 11 year old James Longland then went out to bat and score his first senior runs before he was bowled for 7 by Wood, having put on 20 with Ben Turk (37). Tom Stratford_Tuke also got his first senior runs scoring 2 runs but was in for a long time and helped Turk take the score to 142-6 leaving the game in the balance. David Longland (14) fresh from his first 50 last week looked good until he took on Smallbone and missed a straight delivery. Ben Turk then fell caught at mid-off by Shaun Blanks with the score on 164. So the Sunday XI needed 26 off 8 overs with 3 batsmen to come as well as Andy Barnes if required. It fell to Simon Dodd (11 not out), Josh Collins (10 including 1 six off Chris Wood over square leg) and Mark Holloway (5 not out) to see the Sunday XI home with 3 overs to spare.
A great game of cricket which had everything in it from superb shots, good bowling, bad bowling, superb catching and not so superb catching (you know who you are !)

Petersfield lose despite batting well

Purbrook 3s won by 4 wickets
After a slightly delayed start due to heavy showers, Petersfield were asked to bat first.
Petersfield got off to a slow start and were only on 6 in the 7th over when captain James Stratford-Tuke offered a return catch to young M Wright who gleefully took his first senior wicket. John Windebank was then adjudged to be LBW to Renfrew as the umpire did not see or hear the inside edge (was very windy). Baker then induced an outside edge off of Simpson through to the keeper leaving Petersfield on 21-3 in the 11th over. All rounder Ben Cox (26) joined number 3 bat Paddy May at the crease and the innings rebuild began with Ben taking up the mantle playing some lovely shots down the ground putting on 61 before he was bowled by Marsh (3-39). Dave Squires came and went getting out to the same bowler in the same way as Cox much to his annoyance.
Under 13 Joe Clarke then showed his coach Squires how to play straight as he supported May very well taking the score along to 135 being caught off opening bowler M Bradley (1-20). Alex Squires (2) was then caught off Marsh playing across the line. This brought Kit Classen (22 not out) in to bat on his senior debut and he and Paddy May punished anything short or wide as the score moved along to 172 before Paddy May mistimed a pull to deep mid wicket to give Renfrew his second wicket. Paddy finished on 82 with 11 fours to get his second 50 in two games as he continued his fine form. Kit and Simon Dodd (11 not out) then scored 18 runs off the last 3 overs to leave Petersfield on a competitive score of 195-8
Purbrook got off to a steady start scoring 34 for the first wicket with a few edges going past gully as well as a few harsh wides off Oli Simpson (2-45). Simpson picked up his 2nd wicket as Garrett was clean bowled for a duck. Marsh (38) and Renfrew took the score to 73 before Renfrew holed out to Paddy May off his son Dan May at midoff.
Purbrook captain A Cornborough (57) came in and hit some lusty blows as well as surviving a very close LBW decision and a couple of difficult catches. Marsh eventually missed a yorker from Dodd (1-46) with the score on 107. Petersfield thought they were in with a chance of pulling the game round as they did in last weeks game but a combination of dropped catches, edges not carrying and good shots from Corborough and J Harris (29) took the game away from Petersfield and only at the end did the 81 run partnership get broken as Ben Cox got the reward for some tight lines finishing with 2-27. The Purbrook number 7 and 8 took them home with no real alarms to wrap up a good win in the 35 over.
Petersfield will be pleased with how they showed resilience in their batting but as the old saying goes "catches win matches"

The Purbrook number 7 and 8 took them home with no real alarms to wrap up a good win in the 35 over.
Petersfield will be pleased with how they showed resilience in their batting but as the old saying goes "catches win matches"

2s continue promotion push
Petersfield II maintained their winning run and promotion push with an emphatic 67 run win over Michelmersh on The Heath. A determined all-round display secured maximum points, despite missing eight of the team from the previous fortnight.
Stand-in skipper, Rob Alliston won the toss and had no hesitation in batting, although a heavy shower before the start reduced the game to 40 overs each. Toby Austin and Chris Wood put on 51 for the first wicket in 12 overs without any alarms until, Wood was caught in the gulley from a ball that lifted off a length. Austin continued onto his 50 with useful support from Will Jameson and Rory Newman, hitting 9 fours. But with the score at 108 he was caught behind in the 25th over. 14 year old Ben Anscombe and Nicky Caddick, took the score to 134 before Ben was joined by father Rob, and these two accelerated the run-rate with a mixture of good strokes and intelligent running between the wickets. These two added 60 in 9 overs before Rob Anscombe succumbed for a very good 44. Ben Anscombe finished with a very commendable 30 not out when the innings closed on 205 for 6.
In reply Michelmersh suffered the worst possible start losing Bundy for 0 bowled by Oscar Windebank in the first over. Alliston and Windebank bowled a tight spell of 10 overs restricting the visitors to 32-2, Alliston having claimed the key wicket of Ranger who scored a century the previous week against Steep. These two were replaced by the off spin of Chris Wood and Toby Austin who bowled tightly to restrict the scoring and picked up wickets at regular intervals. Moore was looking threatening until he was very well caught by Newman in the deep for a powerful 34. By the end of their spell, Michelmersh were 103-6 so with the game almost won, the aim was to make sure they were bowled out in order to gain maximum bowling points. Alliston and Windebank duly obliged, each taking 3 wickets. The side were well-led by Alliston and all bowlers supported by very good fielding.

Presidents day cricket match

This is an important fundraising and club support request. Please can you contact me or Jude Squires on attendance, cakes or support. I'm asking all club members, parents, colts, senior, ladies, boys and girls please...
For the first time this year, we will be holding a President’s Match 1pm Sunday 3rd August at The Heath Cricket pitch.
The match will be a limited overs game between two teams made up of guests of the club’s president – Nick Blakstad, representatives of the club’s sponsors, supporters and advertisers, and members of the club. The teams will be chosen to produce a fair, fun, yet competitive game.
The match will start at 1pm, tea at about 4pm, and a BBQ will be held on conclusion of the match at about 7pm.
As we are not having a charity day this year, this is one of the few fundraising opportunities we will have so its important that we get as many members and families to attend as possible.
We need volunteers to bake cakes, man the BBQ, teas and coffees and clearing up. I should be able to browbeat my twins into manning the bar for much of the day but help with other tasks is essential.
Can I ask you all to get as many of your teams as possible along and can we have volunteers from each team as well please.

Petersfield 3s won by 29 runs
On the hottest day of the year (even the ants were flying) Petersfield won the toss and asked the visitors to field first much to the delight of the Petersfield players
The home side did not get off to the best of starts as Ben Anscombe (2) succumbed to the short leg fielder as he mistimed a pull straight to him. Rory Newman (13) and John Windebank (17) started to rebuild the innings with some good batting with Rory and John punishing the bad ball but keeping out the good balls until Rory got a jaffa from S Benge (10 overs - 1 wicket - 25 runs) which broke the bail on leg stump. John Windebank then played across the line to a straight delivery to be trapped LBW by D ford (7-1-42) to leave Petersfield on 43-3 in the 16th over.
Paddy May (87 not out) was joined at the crease by Oli Shapley (62) and the pair took to the task of getting maximum batting points to aid Petersfield in their relegation fight with great authority. At almost a run a ball the pair made the Riverside bowlers and fielders wilt in the hot temperatures and punished anything short and wide scoring 19 boundaries including 2 sixes from Shapley. When the partnership was finally broken in the 36th over they had put on 139 (possibly a 3s record) leaving Petersfield very handily placed on 182. The skipper (James Stratford-Tuke) decided against changing the batting order to get quick runs and proved he knew what he was doing as the onslaught continued with he and Paddy putting on 48 to take Petersfield to their best score since the previous season and leave Riverside to chase 230 from their 42 overs
After tea the cloud cover came over slightly and Petersfield confidently took to the field to defend the big total. Despite losing their first wicket in the second over as Oli Shapley (10-2-39) got a delivery to rise off a length. It took a superb catch from Paul Clarke at gully diving forward to his left,
Riverside set about their run chase with the same determination as Petersfield. Captain K Cowell (85) and J Kundy (69) punished any wayward bowling in similar fashion to Petersfields batsmen and looked to be taking the game away from Petersfield with a 134 run partnership before a change of bowling from skipper James proved to be the turning point of match as Dave Squires (8-4-41) first captured Kundy at midwicket thanks to a good catch from Ben Anscombe in his first over. Captain Cowell continued to punish anything short or legside until Squires got a ball to swing and bounce late and induced a thick outside edge which Rory Newman took diving backwards at point, the score was then 174-3 in the 32nd over.
Petersfield had got what they wanted and they sensed a win could be on the cards if they continued their excellent fielding and catching. Oli Shapley returned to the attack and removed A Kundy (0) with a beauty. Squires continued to cause false shots from the Riverside batsmen removing M Salby (7) and A Cleaver (4) both caught and bowled as wickets continued to fall.
Ben Cox removed L Deller (4) with a lovely slower ball and then had S Benge (7) caught behind by keeper Windebank. A superb piece of fielding from Ben Anscombe at mid wicket accounted for D Price (1) as he threw the ball right over the stumps to allow Squires to break the wickets with the Riversdie player a good 2 yards short of his ground. Ben Cox then clean bowled B Price (0) to wrap up the innings on 201.
A great game of cricket played in the right spirit with some great performances with the bat on both sides making it nip and tuck for most of the afternoon. Maximum points for Petersfield moves them closer to the teams above them as they look to avoid relegation.
Man of the match - Paddy May for his 87 not out as his new bat shows its worth when wielded with such skill.
