T20 comes to Petersfield!

Hi everyone

Before we get stuck into this weekend's fixtures, I wanted to take the opportunity to tell you about the NatWest U19 T20 competition that we've entered so you can make a note in your diaries about our first home fixture - Friday July 24th vs Sparsholt at the Heath.

We want to make this a real T20 experience and an evening that the whole club can get involved with - so the BBQ will be out, the bar open; it should be a great night and a high standard of cricket as our talented youth players take on the best in our district. We have 2 other home fixtures - dates to be confirmed.

Thanks to some extremely generous sponsorship from Petersfield Round Table, Andy Guest and Agincourt, the lads will be in full T20 kit (a rather smart green and black number), black pads, we're using special T20 pink balls, white stumps, flashing bails, Rich Stephens is spinning the disks - the works. It will be a lot of fun.

More details to follow but I wanted to give you some early notice so we can get as many people to the Heath as we can to support The Panthers!

Petersfield U15s v Hanvant u15s

Petersfield Under 15s returned to the top of the A league with a 9 wicket victory over Havant at the Heath.

Havant won the toss and decided to bat  and got off to a steady start to reach 21 off the first 6 overs with some tight bowling from stand in skipper Ben Turk (4 overs for 7) and Joe Clarke (4 - 22 - 1). Matt Friend (3 - 14 - 2) and Ben Anscombe (4 - 6 - 4) ripped through the middle order with Ben Anscombe taking 3 wickets in 4 balls to reduce Havant from 41-1 to 48-6. Adam Childs took a wicket with his first ball as Ed Milford took the 3rd of his catches on the night. Joe Clarke came back and took a wicket courtesy of a wonderful low catch to his right  as he was going the other way. Havant finished on 74-9 after a very disciplined bowling performance backed up with the now customary superb fielding performance.

Unlike the return fixture at the beginning of the season Petersfield batted sensibly with stand in opener Tommy Mathews (19) and Ben Anscombe (34 not out) put on 45 for the first wicket. before Tommy got a ball that climbed and caught the top of the bat to be caught. He had batted very well with Joe Clarke's bat hitting one flat 6 over extra cover. Ben Anscombe continued his fine batting form with a fluent 34 not out as he and Ben Turk (14 not out) took the lads home with 9 overs to spare.

Next week it is a real top of the table clash with Petersfield taking on Portsmouth and Southsea who lie 2nd with a game in hand onwards and upward young lads

Petersfield 1s slip to 3rd

Petersfield 1st XI slip to third after loss to Longparish.

Longparish’s good all round seam attack were disciplined, patient and accurate. Harry Martin (10-1-32) was outstanding for Longparish, able to use a green patch on a length, he frequently bowled unplayable deliveries and frustrated Petersfield’s top order. Despite a fast outfield Petersfield could only limp to 75-3 after 22 overs. Thereafter, Shaun Blanks (46) played positively hitting an exquisite six off Martin. When he was caught off Alex Coetzee with 5 overs remaining any hope of reaching 200 faded and Petersfield were restricted to 173 all out. Coetzee finished with an impressive 6 wicket haul though in truth this had much to do with the pressure the other Longparish bowlers had managed to create.

After setting a low target Petersfield needed to be aggressive and take early wickets. However in stark contrast to Longparish’s opening bowlers, Petersfield were wayward and failed to utilise the helpful wicket and wasted the new ball. Opener Michael Taplin smashed 60 off 30 balls and Longparish made 73 from the first 7 overs; dropped twice while in the 20s and 30s, these misses would prove costly.

Undeterred, Petersfield refused to give up hope. Skipper Damian Carson turned to his slow bowlers Keith Gumbe (10-1-24) and Mark Stanley (10-2-14). Bowling in tandem, the run rate dramatically reduced, Carson then chipped in with 2 wickets of his own and at 132-5 Longparish were looking surprisingly shaky. However with 17 overs remaining it wasn’t to be and Longparish were able to nurdle their way over the line without taking any further risks.

A game to be forgotten, Petersfield were bitterly disappointed with their collective effort with only Blanks, Gumbe and Stanley performing to somewhere near their best. Petersfield will be back at The Heath on Saturday more determined to display their talent against Compton & Chandlers Ford.

Petersfield 2s win again to remain top of the league.

On what felt like the hottest day of the year Petersfield  2s welcomed Hambledon 3s to the Heath. Hambledon's skipper called wrong and to the relief of the Petersfield players, skipper Richard Stephens elected to bat first.

Richard himself was out in the 2nd over edging through to the keeper off Garin Chapman (2 for 39). Chris Russell was run out with the score on 30 trying to push a 2 to third man but hesitated and was a yard short of his ground. This bought under 15 Ben Anscombe (88) to the crease and he played a couple of glorious cover drives to get his innings moving. Ben and Will Rice (112 not out) played chanceless cricket to take the score too 90-2 when Will played a very uncharacteristic lofted drive to long off but this was dropped by the Hambledon player off his son's bowling. A few overs later Ben was dropped at gully off Tom Toogood's bowling.

The pair discussed taking advantage of the lives they had been given and couldn't have made much more of the chance as they went on to put on 198 for the 3rd wicket with Ben only getting out in the 41st over trying to push the score on and get himself to a hundred. When he edged Chapman through to the keeper. With 10 overs left the score was 150 the skipper was hoping to get to 220 but the way Rice and Anscombe accelerated took the score up to 240 at the end. Will played beautifully for his 112 and was superbly supported by Ben who got his first adult 50 for the club (well played lads)

Opening bowlers Oscar Windebank (4-54) and Frank Straw (2-22) bowled well without any reward before Grennan (8) was clean bowled by Oscar. Oscar then removed Bridgman (14) caught behind by keeper Will Jameson who was enjoying the consistent bounce from the Heath pitch compared with last week. Rogers (51) scored well at the other end throwing his bat at anything wide of the stumps. Steve Toogood was clean bowled by Chris Russell (1-36). Rogers was joined by Lewis le Clerq (51) and the pair got away with 3 chances before finally Chris Wood (2-39) had a catch held at long off to remove Rogers. The 2s aversion to catching the ball seemed to be catching (excuse the pun) with 3 different players dropping catches.

Once Rogers went Shinn (23) joined Le Clerq and although Hambledon were way behind the scoring rate they frustrated Petersfield's bowlers before Le Clerq quickly followed Shinn as the opening bowlers returned to give Petersfield a chance of picking up maximum bowling points. Despite some great keeping and a superb catch from Steve Gibson at gully Petersfield could not get the maximum bowling points as Hambledon finished on 180-9.

Another good win for Petersfield 2s picking up 23 points to keep their place at the top of the league. Onwards and upwards for the 2s.

Men of the match - Will Rice and Ben Anscombe for that 198 run partnership.

Special mentions to Oscar for  his 4 wickets and Will Jameson behind the stumps with 3 catches and a stumping (although not given)

Petersfield Under 15s top of the league

After the loss in the first game of the season Petersfield under 15s have bounced back winning 4 games on the bounce. Skipper Gabe Broadhurst is leading from the front ably supported by the whole team who are playing some wonderful cricket

On Tuesday this week the lads took on Burridge and restricted them to 58 before knocking them off with the loss of only 2 wickets. The bowling and fielding was high class and setup the victory where Gabe Broadhurst (not out this season at this level) scored a fluid 36 retired not out to see the lads home.

On Thursday the lads took on Sarisbury and beat them by 7 wickets restricting a team who score 192-1 last week to 91 ! Again the fielding and bowling is the big highlight of the season so far with Ben Turk leading the way with 13 wickets at 3 runs apiece!

The team has their stars but every player who has played this season has contributed in the field with catches, run outs, wickets and run saving fielding. 5 different players have retired, 8 different bowlers have picked up wickets and 3 different players have forced run outs.

As with any cricket team the success of the team comes from the captain and the way he leads the side. Gabe has stepped in to this role fantastically well to keep the tradition of good captains from the last few years at Under 15 level.

Under 7 and under 9 training 26th June

Dear All,

Tomorrow evening’s training will take place at Churcher’s College ground at Penns Place, situated behind our ground.

The entrance is on the right approx. 100 yds before you would normally turn right from Penns Place for the car park adjacent to our ground.  There is limited parking in front of the blue gates at the entrance so you may need to park at the Taro centre or at Penns Place and walk back I am afraid.

We have moved to Churcher’s ground to accommodate two colts games ( under 13 (at the heath) and under 11 (at Penns place)) tomorrow night, we will have the ground to ourselves.

Petersfield 1s remain second

Petersfield 1st XI remain second in Hampshire CL County Division 2 as Bishops Waltham falter.

With dark clouds hovering throughout the day, 80% humidity and a tinge of green on the wicket, skipper Damian Carson had no hesitation after winning the toss about making Redlynch and Hale bat first on what looked like a bowlers’ paradise – and so it would prove.

Redlynch and Hale got off to the worst possible start with in form Ian Tanner failing to keep out a low one from Ben Turk, playing on for just 6. Mark Stanley (10-4-28) was in superb form, deftly alternating his length, swinging and turning the ball at will; Stanley removed the rest of the top order. Youngster Ben Turk (8.5-3-15) continued to bowl a nagging length and deservedly picked up 3 wickets, all bowled as Redlynch & Hale faltered. Only Willoughby and Weber could make the 20s. All out for 115 from 37.5 overs, with extras top scoring, the total was never going to be enough.

Petersfield, in a rush to finish the game, were perhaps guilty of playing a few too many loose shorts and not giving the Redlynch & Hale bowlers enough respect given the conditions. Ash Spencer, Shaun Blanks and Andy Barnes all made breezy 25s but wickets regularly fell and it was left to keeper Harry Lambert and Damian Carson to hit the last 20 runs as the rain fell. Winning in the 22nd over, victory was swift but at the cost of 7 wickets.

The gap at the top of the league has narrowed: Bishops Waltham lost to Longparish, who will be Petersfield’s opponent this Saturday.
