Petersfield U16s tightened their grip on third place in the league with a comfortable 32-run victory over Waterlooville.
Batting first, Newman (28*) and Thomas (25*) got off to an excellent start, putting on 68 runs in only 5 overs, with excellent calling and running between the wickets.
The innings stalled slightly after the openers retired, before sensible batting by young debutant Broadhurst (19) and Groves-Hambridge (13*) took the Petersfield total to a respectable 125 for 3.
Caddick (2 for 10 off 3 overs) and Newman (0 for 9 off 2 overs) gave nothing away as Waterlooville tried to chase down the target, while Cox had star opener Reynolds stumped off the first ball of the innings.
Two run-outs, a caught-behind and a brilliant catch by Caddick off Broadhurst accounted for the remaining wickets. The pressure exerted by the Petersfield bowlers, backed by tight fielding, proved too much for our opponents, who finished 93 all out.
This was an impressive display by a more inexperienced Petersfield line-up than usual. However the older players really stepped up to the plate and everyone contributed in another great team effort.
If the colts match turned out to be a routine victory for Petersfield, the seniors’ division 3 match-up vs Denmead on Feb 19th was anything but. In fact it featured one of the performances of the season.
Chasing just 92, ‘Field collapsed calamitously to 27 for 5 and it looked all over. Enter U16 skipper Nicky Caddick, last man standing, who proceeded to blast 54* including four sixes to claim an incredible 1-wicket victory with just four balls to spare.
He may have ridden his luck at times but this was one of those individual displays that will live long in the memory. A tremendous effort. Nicky – take a bow!
