Petersfield U16s vs Fareham & Crofton
Petersfield lost by 5 wickets
Put into bat, the 16s batted steadily to reach 109 for 3 in
12 overs but couldn’t prevent opponents and league leaders Fareham overhauling
their total with 4 overs to spare.
‘Field’s openers Thomas (17) and Broadhurst (26 n.o.) put on
72 for the first wicket before Thomas was run-out in rather freakish fashion, a
fine shot by his opening partner narrowly missing the back wall by inches
(which would have been a straight six), hitting the side wall instead. This
lead to a running mix-up and a controversial call by the square-leg umpire!
Turk and Squires battled hard to push the total over the
100-mark, which was a solid effort from the team.
However Fareham in reply went on the attack straight away,
and despite a brilliant, diving, one-handed catch by Broadhurst off Pocock,
comfortably chased down the target.
The U16s are batting steadily, putting together some
competitive totals. More accuracy with the bowling and greater sharpness in the
field is needed to further improve the team’s performance.
Petersfield vs Bedhampton
Petersfield won by 5 wickets
The senior side later steamrollered Bedhampton, winning
comfortably by 5 wickets with nearly 5 overs to spare (despite some rather
grumpy umpiring!).
Bowling first, Charles, Blanks, Rice and Austin immediately
had their opponents in trouble, each bowler picking up a wicket apiece, while
Frank Straw, in his first game of the indoor season, was everywhere in the
field, holding onto 3 catches. Bedhampton eventually struggled to 64 for 5.
