Petersfield U15 v Portsmouth Community U15 - 24th July 2013

Petersfield U15 Match Reports
Petersfield U15 v Portsmouth Community U15 - 24th July 2013
Result:
Portsmouth Community U15 – 112 for 5; Petersfield U15 – 116 for 7
Petersfield U15 won by 3 wickets
Petersfield U15 beat Portsmouth Community U15 by 3 wickets to go top of the league, although at one stage it looked for all the world as if Petersfield were going to lose. Alex Squires the Petersfield captain won the toss and decided to mix it up by electing to field first so that although Petersfield would be batting in the gathering gloom they would know what score to chase.
Ben Turk (1 for 18) and Alex Squires (1 for 20) bowled very accurately and restricted Portsmouth Community to 18 from the first 4 overs. Dan May (0 for 22) and Harry Richards (1 for 19) carried on where Turk and Squires had left off so that although Portsmouth Community were not losing any wickets they were not scoring freely. Joe Mayell, behind the stumps, caught Bowen for 15 in the 10th over (bowled by Richards) to take the first wicket. A smart bit of fielding from Joe Clarke saw Cummings run out without troubling the scorer in the next over. Joe Clarke (0 for 20) replaced Richards and carried on bowling accurate and dangerous swing bowling. Ben Anscombe (1 for 9) replaced May and bowled some very controlled off spin which caused the Portsmouth batsman no end of trouble and he took a well-deserved wicket with Dan Parry taking a superb reflex catch at silly mid-off. Turk and Squires came back to wrap up the Portsmouth inning each taking a wicket in their second spell caught by Mayell and Claasen respectively. Portsmouth ended up on 112 for 5 with their score assisted by 42 extras (although to speed the game up wides and no-balls were worth 2 runs with no extra ball). It was expected that this score would be no problem to the normally free scoring Petersfield.
Gabriel Broadhurst, who is in superb form, and Dan Parry opened the innings for Petersfield. With Andrews (0 for 20) and Palmer (2 for 11) bowling with real control and lots of movement off the pitch Petersfield were struggling to gain their normal momentum. In the 4th over Palmer accounted for both Broadhurst (9) and Ben Anscombe (0). Two overs later Dan Parry was caught by Bowen off his own bowling for 3 off 17 balls. Joe Mayell and Rory Claasen started a mini revival putting on 15 before Mayell was bowled by Bowen for 4 with Claasen run out soon after for 9. Tommy Matthews playing his first game for the U15 took the attack to Portsmouth before he was bowled for 5. This brought Joe Clarke and Ben Turk to the crease. With more than half the overs gone and Petersfield on 53 for 6 it looked like Portsmouth Community were going to gain revenge for their defeat to Petersfield earlier in the season. However Joe Clarke and Ben Turk had other ideas. Clarke played the perfect foil to the aggressive and hard hitting Turk with the pair of them putting on 38 runs before Joe Clarke was bowled for 5 (in 13 balls) by Max Cummings who had swapped his normal wicket keeping gear to become a bowler. This brought Captain Alex Squires to the crease to see if he could save the day for Petersfield. Squires (6 NO) and Turk (42 NO) saw Petersfield home with 3 wickets and 1 over to spare. Turk batted beautifully to guide Petersfield home and although he batted aggressively it was all proper cricket shots.
This match brought an end to the Petersfield U15 season. Overall it looks like they will win the league winning 6 of their 8 games (although 5 of their games (including both losses) were very close games. The U15 should be proud of what they have achieved this year.
