Petersfield 3s V Herriard 2s

Result: Herriard - 2nd XI Won by 37 runs
Date: Sat 24th Aug 2013
Start Time: 14:00

After all the early morning rain in Hampshire it was a surprise that the game was on but Herriard had the covers on and worked hard to get the game on. On a green pitch with a lot of grass on it Petersfield captain James Stratford-Tuke won the toss and elected to bowl first. Both sides were pushing for the last promotion place so there was a lot to play for.

The Herriard openers looked circumspect against the seaming ball but had pushed the score along to 21 before young Ben Turk (4-38 off 10) broke the partnership with a full length delivery which cleaned up N Wolley (10) removing leg stump. They added just six more before Turk repeated the ball accounting M Bullpit for a duck.
Herriard then set about rebuilding the innings as Captain S Weston (41) and K Peachy (52) put on 107 for the 3rd wicket taking advantage of some wayward and short bowling. Omar Iqbal (2-33 off  who had been struggling with the foot holes got 1 in the correct place and removed Peachy LBW as he missed a full straight delivery. With that breakthrough captain Stratford-Tuke brought Turk back and in his first over back he removed Captain Weston with another full straight delivery LBW to cap another wonderful bowling performance from the young 13 year old medium pacer. Petersfield looked to be right back in the game with Herriard 150-5 but J Holder (51) batted fantastically well with the rest of the lower middle order despite wickets falling regularly at the other end with Ollie Simpson (2-44 off 7) removing 2 wickets in 2 overs despite some wayward bowling at times. Oscar Windebank (2-38 off 9.5) finished off the Herriard innings bowling Holder. With only 4 players reaching double figures Petersfield will be disappointed with the number of extras conceded (40),Herriard finishing on 212 all out which looked a very competitive total even with the pitch and outfield drying out after 15 overs of light rain in the middle of their innings.

Petersfield struggled at the start of their innings to get the ball away as Herriard started with 1 spinner and a slow medium pacer reduced Petersfield to 18-4 with openers Lawes (3-21 off 10) and young spinner Coombs (3-36 off 10) bowling an accurate line and length. Eoin Seager (53) and Omar Iqbal (20) looked to be performing the same rebuilding task as Herriard until Omar missed a very slow delivery from P Mccarthy (4-54 off 9.1) to be bowled. That brought Rob Anscombe (57) to the crease and proved yet again what a valuable asset he has been in the success that Petersfield 3s have seen this season. Rob carried on from where Omar had left off and put on 85 for 6th wicket with Eoin Seager. Both players manouvered the ball around the field keeping the score ticking along at 5 or 6 runs an over. Coombs and Lawes returned to the attack and helped to dry up the runs which forced Eoin to play across the line to a Coombs delivery to be caught at mid wicket. WIth Petersfield having a strong batting line up there was still a good chance that Petersfield could chase down the total despite having lost 6 wickets.

Unfortunately this proved not to be the case as the lower order struggled to generate the pace off the slow bowlers Coomb and.Mccarthy and succumbed to these bowlers trying to force the score along. When Rob Anscombe went again trying to push the scoring rate up it was a lost cause even with some lusty hitting from Ed Davenport (10) including a massive 6 off the first ball he faced. Petersfield ended on 175 which meant they scored only 11 points and Herriard taking a maximum 24 points.Herriard batted well and having home knowledge had the better bowlers for the wicket produced.

Petersfield have now dropped to 5th in the league and Herriard are up to 4th there is now only 1 average point between 4 sides vying for the last promotion place going into the last weekend of the season.

Man of the Match - shared between 3 players Ben Turk, Rob Anscombe and Eoin Seager
Moment of the match - Ed Davenport's mighty six off his first delivery
