"As you know this season has been very adversely affected by the ghastly weather earlier in the year and with some difficulties in weekly team selection our administration has been severely tested.However one subject that shouldn't have got overlooked is the payment of senior subscriptions especially as non payers should not strictly be considered for team selection.

There are a few of you that still have not paid and I MUST ask you to pay by next weekend as failure to do so may affect our league standing and our insurance cover.

You can give cash or a cheque ( £35 ) to your captain or send it to Tim Boulton our Treasurer at 78 The Causeway, Petersfield, GU31 4JS.

This is important so please don't let me down on this as no one has the time to keep chasing. Thanks in advance !

Hello again

After a break of a few weeks where hardly any cricket has been played by senior or colts teams we finally have something to report.

This round up starts with Paddy May's Under 13 team beating Liss U13s by 8 wickets with 14 overs to spare ! A great all round team performance with the highlight being Ben Anscombe's 30 not out.

This was followed the same week with the Petersfield Girls XI beating the Pink Maidens in their last game of the season. Chris Russell's (the coach) comments below sum up his feeling on the game

“Congratulations should go to the entire team who played with spirit and focus, this result takes the girls to a new level of which they should be very proud. “

The Under 15 lads also had a couple of games squeezed in at the end of the season with a win and a draw from the 2 games against Portsmouth Community and Waterlooville. Both games were played in a fantastic spirit and all the lads who played showed there is talent in the under 15 section of the colts. The manager and coach would like to thanks all the lads who have played for the team this season and despite our reservations performed to the highest standards against teams who are on the whole a lot older and more experienced.

Despite the weather many of the colts’ teams are having a sneaky bit of success. U9Bs and U13s top their table and U11Bs are 2nd. If the U9Bs manage to get another game in they will have completed all their fixtures and have currently won 8 – an excellent performance from coach,volunteers and team!!

For those of you who don’t know, Gabriel Broadhurst (12) has been asked to attend an England Development Session at Loughborough University. He will have to go through a number of tests including hitting targets from a bowling machine using a thin bat. I am sure everyone wishes him luck.

With the colts fun day fast approaching (Saturday 8 th September) the coaches, managers and parents of the players are dusting off their old pads and bats ready to show the youngsters how it is done.

Please also do not forget the Colts Presentation night that same week Friday 7 th September at Petersfield Rugby club 18:30 for a 19:00 start

Onto the senior teams with July being a complete wash out for the 2s and 3s the 1s played a couple of games winning 1 and losing 1.

On Saturday the 1s took on Rotherwick CC completing a comfortable 195 run victory highlights of the match were Billy Maisey's maiden hundred in the league scoring 14 fours and 5 sixes. He was ably supported by Frank Straw (47). The bowlers then took over with Caddick, Nigel Straw and Jameson all taking wickets with the highlight being Caddick (5-23) bowling 2 of the openers and Nigel Straw bowling a double wicket maiden. Special mention also for Nigel Stone for bowling a miserly 10 overs for 11 runs including 5 maidens.

The 2s again fell foul of the weather with the Heath being unplayable all weekend again because of the weather.

The 3s made the long trip to play Basingstoke and NH 5s at Sherford on Lodden where they came up against the best bowling attack captain James Stratford-Tuke had faced all season. The 3s fell 100 or so runs short of the 226 needed for victory thanks to a very good hundred by Basingstoke opener J Ahuyi.

The highlights of the day (apart from Jess Ennis, Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah winning gold) was the first senior wicket for Oliver Simpsom (13) on debut. He also got his first runs with a sweetly timed 4 through the covers impressing his captain so much some of the older players are looking nervously over their shoulders for the rest of the season.

The Sunday team came up against old rivals DACD and recorded a good victory at Penn's on Sunday beating the Biblical downpour on Sunday morning to get the game on. Captain Marcus Sampson was very pleased with the hard fought victory in a game played in a very good spirit. Highlights of the day were

Young Alex Squires for his 3-9 which changed the game in Petersfield's favour and a magic moment was Alex Thomas being hit for a massive six (hmm and OK his first wicket).

Petersfield Sunday v DACD

After what can only be described as a biblical downpour on Sunday morning, Petersfield Sunday XI turned up at Penn's place expecting a very wet pitch and outfield. This was not the case and despite what looked like a pitch conducive to batting the DACD captain inserted Petersfield much to Marcus Sampson's delight as we wanted to bat anyway was the response to the gathered media ;-)

Jack Hanam (62) opened the batting with Alex Thomas (2) and the innings started off brightly with Jack hitting some big 4s and 6s off the opening bowlers before Thomas mistimed a slower ball back to the bowler Mike Wyatt (2-20 off 8). This bough Ben Friend to the wicket who followed his 36 on Saturday with a fluent 63, with some lovely sweep shots including a massive 6 (2 in two days for young Ben). Before falling to the “commentators curse” as discussions in the pavilion revolved around whether he had ever scored a senior hundred. The scoring rate was high throughout the innings thanks to Matt Salmons nice 36, Rory Newmans fluent 25 not out and a cameo of an innings from Dave Squires (15 not out) leaving Field with a good total of 220.

After a good tea the DACD openers came out with all guns blazing taking advantage of wayward bowling from Dave Squires (0-20 off 3) and Nicky Caddick (0-12 off 3 with a maiden!), must be something about opening the bowling from the other end to Squires as the usually reliable Caddick bowling some very uncharacteristic wide delivery's. Jack Hanam (2-18 off 8) helped to keep the DACD openers under some sort of control but as drinks were taken they were up with the rate on 106. This prompted some discussion between Jack and Marcus on field placings with Jack asking for a fly slip to be posted in his first over after drinks. Despite his opening partner warning him about the dangers just after drinks Tim Barton (56) took a swipe at a rising delivery and was caught at fly slip by Simon Dodd. At this point field started to squeeze the DACD batting with some tight bowling but Meredydd Hughes (64) continued to score off anything loose keeping the run rate needed to overhaul Petersfield at about 7 an over.

Marcus Sampson then bought on young Alex Squires (3-9 off 4 overs) to compliment the always economical Mark Holloway (1-19 off 8), could have had more but for a couple of dropped catches .

In his first over he had the very dangerous Meredydd caught at gully. He then proceeded to remove 'Danger Man' Mike Wyatt with his now trademark in swinging/dipping nasty delivery which has lots of batsmen in trouble. With the help of his father at Mid-on he picked up his 3^rd wicket and was unlucky not to get more with a speel of bowling which impressed his captain and the opposition to leave him with weekend figures of 6-27 off 8 overs, very good from the young 14 year old (even if he outshone his dad). Then came the moment that most of the team were dreading as wicket keeper Alex Thomas was allowed to bowl the last over with over 40 needed. To describe Alex's bowling as spin could lead me to being sued under the trade descriptions act and this was true as James Miller planted his 2^nd delivery over deep mid wicket for a massive six that had the rabbits running for cover 20 yards from the boundary edge. Undaunted by this Thomas then proceeded to get one to miss that bat and Matt Salmon (who kept very well to say he has not been keeping at all this summer) whipped the bails off to leave Miller stranded and young Thomas dancing a jig of delight around the pitch to pick up his first senior wicket and last as his dad said he was retiring from bowling with that one over. The discussion on the way back to the pavillion revolved around the umpire just wanting the game over and to get to the pub prompting the dubious stumping decision with the batsmen and half the Petersfield players saying 'he was in by miles'

All in all a fantastic game of cricket with over 400 runs scored played in bright sunshine in a great spirit which at the end of the day is what it is all about. Well done to Petersfield, well played DACD .

Basingstoke and NH v Petersfield 3s

Petersfield travelled to a few miles north of Basingstoke to take on Basingstoke and North hants 5th xi. Having left Petersfield with the rain falling the team were not confident of getting a full game in but in the end there was 1 shower but not interruption to play. On a very dark and grass covered pitch James Stratford-Tuke won the toss and inserted the opposition.

The opening bowlers did not bowl well and despite picking up 1 of the openers cheaply gave the Basingstoke players too many hittable balls which they took full advantage of. The scoring rate was slowed with some very nice legspin from Tristan O'Brien (3-52) and Josh Phipps (3-68) restricting all the other batsmen to low scores. The stand out innings was from J Ahuyi with a fine 106 ( although was dropped having made only 20) before being run out pushing for a 2 off a misfield at deep cover.

 Enter youngsters Rob Straw (15) and Oliver Simpson (13) who picked up a wicket a piece to clean up the tail, Oliver Simpson picking up his first senior wicket on his debut. The Basingstoke team scored a total of 225.

Petersfield started well but had trouble getting the boundaries they needed to keep up with the required rate,  against some fine opening bowlers and some long grass in the outfield. The need to push the scoring on led to Stratford-Tuke (10) being run out in similar fashion to the Basingstoke opener. Eoin Seager (14) and Ben Friend (35) batted very well against a leg spinner who was getting the ball to turn 2ft most balls. Gabriel Broadhurst (12 years old) made it a hatrick of good performances with a well constructed 9 before being caught in the chest which seemed to knock his concentration. After a small cameo from Simpson (4 not out) and O'Brien (1 not out) saw out the overs but Petersfield fell 116 short of there total.

All in all it was a promising performance for the future with some young players doing well in difficult circumstances, it could have been very different with a bit of luck. Above all the highlight was the disciplined application when the game could have run a away from us during the Basingstoke innings, it was a great effort to get them all out and ultimately we were beaten by a very good side with a bowling attack that would grace sides in higher leagues than ours.

Petersfield CC vs Rotherwick CC Match Report 04.08.2012 played at Rotherwick

Petersfield travelled to Rotherwick in need of a victory to keep successive promotion hopes alive. Possessing a strong batting line up Field opted to bat on a flat Rotherwick track with a view to post a big total. Openers Rice and Maisey started well putting on 40 runs inside the forst seix overs before Rice (11) fell attempting a hook off a short delivery.

Maisey brought up his half century supported well by young Alex Thomas who showed great patience and concentration in his innings alongside the free-scoring opener. At the halfway stage Petersfield were set at 112 for 2 down with the hard hitting middle order to follow. Frank Straw, promoted up the order took the aerial route and made the opposition pay for two dropped catches with a quick fire 47.

Maisey completed his maiden league century before falling in the 31^st over with an innings which consisted of 14 fours and 5 sixes. Chris Russell (53) and Harry Hannam (21) continued the onslaught with 4 more wickets falling in an attempt to take the game away from the home side.

Rotherwick took to the pitch needing 287 runs for victory against deep Petersfield bowling attack. The miserly Nigel Stone (10-5-11-0) gave nothing away once again allowing Nicky Caddick to bowl a hostile spell from the other end. Caddick bowled two of the top three batsmen leaving the home side on 28 for 2. Nigel Straw continued the good work picking up a double wicket maiden in his 6^th over leaving Rotherwick at 63 for 4 down.

The returning Will Jameson (6.1-0-29-2) recovered well after an expensive start forcing a run out with some tight spin bowling. The re-introduction of Caddick blew away the lower order with the opening bowler returning superb figures of 5 for 23 from his 9 overs. Rotherwick were all out for 95 runs giving the visitors a convincing 189 run victory.

Petersfield U15s vs Waterlooville

Petersfield U15s vs Waterlooville Petersfield lost by 14 runs Petersfield U15s may have narrowly lost against a strong Waterlooville side but put in their best all-round performance of the season. Winning the toss and inserting Waterlooville, the U15s did well to restrict their opponents to 128 all out thanks to clever bowling, well-set fields and solid catching. District player Harry Robbins blasted a powerful 43 including three sixes but the next highest score was just 15, so this was a terrific effort. Alex Squires led the way with 3 for 18, well supported by Rob Straw, Tom Pocock and Ollie Simpson with two wickets apiece, the latter accounting for danger-man Robbins, caught behind by Thomas off a skier. The opposition umpire, who is Waterlooville’s overseas player, said it was the best fielding performance he had seen all season. Anscombe, Egelstaff, Grange and Simpson all took catches, with Thomas picking up his customary stumping. In reply, openers Alex Thomas and Gabriel Broadhurst put on 59 for the first wicket and were up with the required run rate at the half-way stage. But when Thomas fell LBW for 30, this triggered a mini-collapse when 4 wickets fell in 4 overs for just 7 runs, which seemed to have put the game out of reach. Enter Ben Turk. In a superb knock of 36 not out in not-very-many balls, superbly supported by Broadhurst (32 not out), the young U13 players nearly took ’Field all the way to a famous victory – but fell agonisingly short. This was a heroic effort by the lads with a number of notable season highs. Our innings featured the three highest individual scores of the season and our total of 115 beat the previous best by 15 runs. ’Field actually scored more runs off the bat than Waterlooville. In the final analysis, it was the 34 extras including 22 wides that was the difference between the two sides. But this shouldn’t detract from what was a fantastic effort by the U15s and a very enjoyable match to watch. If this turns out to be the last game of the year, Petersfield have finished the season on a real high.
