Portsmouth B vs Petersfield

Petersfield’s senior indoor side went down to defeat by 16 runs on Sunday against bogey side Portsmouth.

Batting first, Portsmouth got off to a flyer, led by openers Wyatt (34) and Palmer-Goddard (21). ‘Field then fought back superbly with four wickets in quick succession (including Wyatt bowled brilliantly through the gate by Will), only for the last pair, talented youngster Kooner-Evans and wily veteran Rick Marston, with some intelligent batting and aided by a couple of fielding lapses, to push the Pompey total to a tough-but-chasable 132.

In reply, Petersfield got off to the worst possible start, losing Alex and Shaun early on. Will (38) looked in great nick, and Gabe (26) and Ben T (16), playing only their second and debut senior indoor games respectively, batted bravely to get ‘Field close – but, sadly, not quite close enough. It was a great effort by the youngsters, though.

So Portsmouth remain something of a jinx side for the Red Rose, who will be hoping for a change of fortune against Waterlooville B on November 9th.

Senior indoor side lay down a marker

Petersfield’s newly promoted senior indoor side started the season in the best possible style with a thumping win by 65 runs over Fareham & Crofton B.

Batting first, openers Will (26) and Alex (42) got off to a flyer, putting on 78 for the first wicket in 4.1 overs. They were well supported by Damian (25*) and Shaun (23*) as ‘Field amassed a huge total of 186 for 4 off their 12 overs. This fell just short of the Division 2 league record of 192 set by US Portsmouth in 1991-92.

A combination of skilful placement and sharp running were key features of what is Petersfield’s highest total in this competition, as was the fact that Will, Alex and Damian all retired and came back out for a second knock.

Fareham had no answer to this formidable total. Shaun (2 wickets) and Damian bowled with real venom, giving nothing away, and were well backed up by some clever, accurate bowling by Will and Liam. Two sharp stumpings by Alex completed the job and a thoroughly convincing victory.

Tougher challenges lie ahead but this was a real statement of intent by the Red Rose. A fantastic all-round performance. Portsmouth B, last year’s Division 3 champions, lie in wait…

I would like to thank everyone that turned up to the presentation evening and / or the fun-day and I would particularly like to thank all those people that helped with all the jobs that needed doing (including organising everything).


From the club's perspective both events seemed to go really well (and the club also managed to raise several hundred pounds from the fun day) and I hope your sons / daughters enjoyed the events - we would welcome any feedback about either event

Another lovely Sunday afternoon at the Heath was topped off with a good win for the Sunday XI thanks to some good top order batting and tight and accurate bowling from Petersfield. Petersfield fielded a very mixed side with 3 under 13s and 2 first team players mixed in with the usual motley Sunday crew.

Petersfield lost the toss but were asked to bat which was a relief to Dave Squires as he would have done the same. Chris Wood (28) and Shaun Blanks (90) got off to a great start putting on 82 for the first wicket with Blanks showing his class as anything short and wide was dispatched to various parts of the heath. Will Rice was starting to panic back in the hutch as it looked like the opening pair may just carry on for the 40 overs but in the 15th over and change of bowler worked dividends as skipper Barnard picked Chris up with his first delivery. Unfortunately for Langstone Will Rice (66) was in the mood along with Blanks to chase down Sunday stalwart Jack Hannam (broken hand) for the batting trophy. With one game left there are now 4 players in with a shout of winning the trophy.

After Blanks got out unluckily bowled off his pads by Brydon Langstone then started to grab the initiative back as Petersfield slumped from 184-1 too 218 all out with only Lima Charles (10), Mark Holloway (5) and Dave Squires (3 not out) contributed to the scoring.

After tea Petersfield took to the field hoping that they had scored enough runs in their innings to give Squires his 3rd win as captain. Lanstone got off to a good start scoring at 4 an over as R Brydon (35) and N Wellington (35) put on 46 for the first wicket as Chris Wood took a return catch to dismiss Brydon. Mr Cooper (one of all the TPS’s teachers) then came out to join Wellington and although the scoring rate slowed the pair put on 33 before Liam Charles bowled Cooper for 21. Liam was replaced by young leg spinner Adam Childs who proceeded to take a return catch in his first over. He continued to bowl fantastically well for a 12 year old and picked up his 2nd wicket as M Wellington (8) tried to hit him over the top but the ball turned square and keeper Squires removed the bails leaving Wellington 2 inches short of his ground. Childs finished with 2-16 off his 5 overs impressing all of the players with his accuracy and turn.

David Longland (2-14 off 5) then joined the party thanks to a wonderful running catch from Jack Butcher to remove opener N Wellington at midwicket. Jack then got the opportunity to pick up his first senior wicket as he trapped Alex Squires LBW as he played a reverse sweep. Leaving Langstone on 166

A very good game played in the spirit of Sunday cricket. Thanks to Alex Squires for playing for Langstone and to Jack Butcher, Harvery Baker and Adam Childs for fielding for Langstone.

Petersfield Cricket Club needs your vote in the Lloyds Bank Community Fund

 

Petersfield Cricket Club has been shortlisted for the Lloyds Bank Community Fund 2014 in your area, we need your vote! We have the chance to be awarded a grant of up to £3,000 from Lloyds Bank to help with drainage on the Petersfield Heath Cricket pitch.

We have been playing cricket in Petersfield for over 260 years; we are an integral part of the community.  Two of our members, Nic and Tom, U11 cricket players have been members of the Club since they were 5, they value what the Club has done for them and what winning £3,000 would do: “We love playing cricket for Petersfield. Both of us play for our schools as well but enjoy the friendships and atmosphere here. There are always problems at the start of the season with the Heath pitch. We look forward to cricket but it is often cancelled, very disappointing. Being able to do something about it so we can start the season training and playing on time would be awesome.”

The Lloyds Bank Community Fund was set up to help local people across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man to have a positive impact at the heart of their community by giving grants to up to 1,400 local good causes in 350 communities.

There are four good causes shortlisted in each community and Lloyds Bank is inviting everyone to vote for the causes they’d most like to support.

Members of the public can vote for their preferred community group on-line, by SMS or Twitter, or in a branch of Lloyds bank from 2 September to 10 October 2014. The local good cause that receives most votes in each community will receive an award of £3,000, with the other groups receiving £2,000, £1,000 or £500 depending on the votes received.
