Petersfield Sunday XI v Hambeldon Sunday XI

The last day of the season is always a sad time in any cricket clubs calendar,but this turned out to be doubly sad as Petersfield lost dramatically to Hambledon on a warmer than usual day at Hambledon Cricket Club.

Petersfield's captain Marcus Sampson changed his call on the coin toss (having not lost a toss all season) and Petersfield were asked to field. With Richard Stephens (0-20 off 6 overs) and Billy Maisey (0-11 off 4) keeping a very tight strangle hold on the Hambledon openers, they forced them into 1 risky single too many when Oscar Windebank and Richard Stephens combined to run out Champman (5) to give Petersfield the breakthrough their bowling deserved. Petersfield kept it very tight for the next 15 overs or so with Mark (the grey bear) Holloway (0-20 off 5) very unlucky not to pick up Mcgrath (57) with some lovely deliveries which somehow missed the stumps. He was superbly aided in his endeavors by Oscar Windebank (3-9 off 7) who had the Hambledon upper middle order in complete disarray with a spell worthy of any game of cricket which included a double wicket maiden. Hambledon recovered and took advantage of some tired bowling from Petersfield's medium pacers before Chris Russell (3-19 off 3) gained a measure of control back in to proceedings. Hambledon ended on 191-9 after some lusty blows in the last over spoiling Chris's figures somewhat.

Petersfield's reply started well with James Stratford Tuke (4) and John Mcguire (77) putting on 48 before James got an accurate ball which bounced about 2 inches off the ground before taking middle stump out. John and number 3 Billy Maisey (21) then took the score along nicely up to drinks with John bringing up his 50 with a glorious punch through the covers for 4. At drinks John decided that he could not continue as his knee and calf were playing up and so he retired hurt. This unfortunately brought about a  the demise of Gabriel Broadhurst first ball, Richard Stephens 2nd ball, Mark Holloway 1st ball, Dave Squires 2nd Ball, Simon Dodd 1st ball and Oscar Windebank 1st ball to give 1 hatrick to S Le Clerq (5-11 off 6) and M Le Clerq (1-9 off 1.3) some remarkable bowling figures. This was a batting collapse of mighty proportions and only Billy Maisey, Chris Russell (14), Marcus Sampson (11 not out) and the returning John McGuire getting bat on ball. This collapse left Petersfield all out for 153.

Petersfield were left in a state of shock having seemingly had the game comfortably in control at around 20 overs. So the season ends on a low note but as ever the Sunday Xi was good fun with some superb banter within the team and with the opposition. It has been a difficult season with the weather but a reasonable season was had and Marcus was very happy with how things went although a few games got away from us.

The author’s man of the match (do not forget to vote on Teamer.net) was John McGuire's 77 which lit up an otherwise disappointing day. Special mention for Oscar Windebank who showed when on form he is one of the most effective bowlers at the club.

Comedy moment of the day goes to Dave Squires who bowled a ball, fell over, pitched about 5 yards in front of his sprawled body and still managed to get the ball down the other end for a dot ball (one of the few balls he managed to get straight all day)

Fun Day report.

Well on a quite magnificent morning Petersfield cricket club opened its doors to the parents of the colts cricketers to show the boys and girls that their talent was inherited from their parents.

The day started off with a lot of work by the volunteers and parents to get the ground and pavilion ready for the up coming Fun day. Special thanks to Andy and Dee Salmon, Mark Friend and all the ladies who cleaned, cooked and served drinks to make the day complete.

The first game to get going was the under 7s who despite having the best part of 25 colts on the books only had 10 lads and dads. This did not diminish the competitive nature of the game as a mixed dads’ and lads’ game. A big shout went up in the first over as one son bowled a beauty to his dad which 'swung miles' according to his dad and took the outside edge. The game then took an unexpected turn as a test match attitude arrived for a 20x20 game and they finished the game a few hours later than expected. There was a winner with the team of dads and lads who batted first winning but in the end cricket was the winner for the under 7s

The under 9's game was a proper dads v lads game with big shots bring played by the dads as they batted first. This only increased the intensity of the pairs match with the dads losing in the penultimate ball of the match with mutterings that the umpire/coach was a tad biased. This was flatly denied by under 9 coach James Stratford-Tuke

The girls beat the parents for the 3 rd straight year without the help of the usual close finish. The Parents batting 1 st scored 46 for the loss 8 wickets in their 12 overs with the last pair of Anscombe’s managing to lose 5 wickets in 3 overs. In reply the girls posted an easy 80 for the loss of only 1 wicket with each pair contributing to the total. To remove any doubt the girls also won the boundary count 11 to 6 as well. Many thanks to all who took part.

The under 11 game was a 6 a side event with a lot of the under 11s having football and the paralympics stopping them from turning out. Despite a lack of numbers the 2 games played were played in great spirit with the games ending one a piece as the dads ran out of steam in the 2nd game. Some hard yards will be needed to be done over the winter by the dads if both games are not to be lost next September!

The intensity of the day was starting to build as the under 13s and under 15s combined to take on a team of dads/coaches. A couple of dads have bragging rights for the next year removing their sons. Most notably Phil Richards and under 15 coach Dave Squires both bowling the lads all ends up. The lads needed a solid start and they got it with Alex Thomas showing the form that got him the under 15 batting award with a fluent 30 not out. The lads posted a competitive 116 in their 20 overs with all the batsmen contributing during the 20 overs.

With the dads still confident, Phil Richards then had the 3rd XI captain taking note as he played some lovely shots retiring on 30 not out off 20 balls. This set up the victory for the dads with some big hitting for another of the coaches, Matt Salmon, gained revenge on young Ben Turk who had taken a liking to Matt's bowling in his well constructed 34 not out in the lads innings.

The final game of the day was between the under 17 lads v a senior select XI consisting of Saturday captains and coaches. With the under 17s batting opening with their opening bowler, it seemed the lads were not taking the game seriously. Despite losing his partner in the second over, young Nicky Caddick scored quickly before being run out attempting a quick single to Dave Squires and was well short as with only one stump to aim at, the under 15 coach proved that he could play the game as well as coach!

Despite a flurry of 3 wickets following this, including a run out of equal ability to the earlier one from the under 13 coach Paddy May. The lads introduced their over age player Matt Salmon who turned the innings completely with 40 off 13 balls showing his earlier innings for the under 15s coaches was no fluke. The lads scored 135 off their 20 overs. The seniors were still confident as they took on the task of chasing the total down. They had not counted on losing 4 wickets to run outs and some generous umpiring of wides from the umpires Richard Thomas and Dave Cox. Despite some late hitting from John McGuire and Jack Hannam, the seniors fell short by 14 runs amid cries of fowl play as Matt (over age) Salmon bowled a tight final couple of overs to cap a fine all round performance from the 19 year old.

All in all the day was yet again a success and a testament to the talent of the colts and coaching staff at the club, which compliment the 3 Saturday sides perfectly.

The previous night the Colts presentation evening was held at Petersfield Rugby Club with all the age groups represented. Special mention goes to the Under 9b team who won their SEHCA B East league and the Under 13 team who managed the same feat in the SEHCA B East League. Three young coaches Benjamin Friend, Rory Newman and Nicky Caddick also got a special mention for all their work and support to the Under 7s, under 9s, under 11s and under 13 team coaches and managers. This was emphasized by Nicky getting more than one vote in the players player of the year for the under 9s.

Again this proves that the colts in the club have talent and are also willing to give back to the younger colts. The club continues to move forward at pace.

Petersfield Sunday XI v Langstone CC

With the whole team but the captain expecting the game to be called off on a damp and overcast day both teams were plesently surprised to get a game played. Marcus Sampson won the toss again for Petersfield (I believe he has not lost a toss all season). The captain decided to bat first on a damp pitch.

With the bowlers and umpires carrying cloths (to dry the ball) the innings got off to a slow start with Jack Hannam (4) falling early to a great catch by Petersfield's Ben Friend (guesting for the Langsatone CC team), this was greeted with annoyance by Jack as he was trying to get the runs to cement his place at the top of the batting stats with only 2 games before the awards evening left. Will Rice (39) then came in and with Andy Salmon (71) put on 50 for the 2nd wicket (Will's score closing the gap on Jack) before he got a leading edge when trying to turn the ball to the legside off of Rory Newman (1-29 off 7), another Petersfield player guesting for Langstone CC. Chris Russell (30) then came in and he and Andy put on a quickfire 62 in 9 overs for the 3rd wicket putting the pressure on Langstone and their guest fielders. Before Ben Friend threw the ball in from Midoff to run out Russell on a very close decision by the newly qualified league umpire.

Petersfield were playing good cricket around Andy Salmon with Cameron Clarke (28) and Henry Austin (23) hitting some big shots to push the score beyond 200 before 3 wickets fell in quick succession leaving Petersfield on a healthy 216-9 at the end of their 40 overs.

The coverted award for the best tea of the season is going to be really close at the presentation evening (over to you skip)

Petersfield took to the field and kept a very tight reign on the scoring with the first 10 overs only going for 20 runs before Simon Dodd (1-42) had the opener plumb LBW not that the opener agreed with the umpire. Ben Friend (77) came out out to join the other opener Walmsley (25) to put on 40 for the 2nd wicket before he was run out brilliantly from wide midon,with only 1 1/2 stumps to aim at Dave Squires hitting the top off the leg stump leaving Langstone CC 59-2.

Rory Newman (33) then came out to join his young compadre Friend to push the score along to 129 with the pair hitting some lusty blows to get Langstone back into the game and up with the required rate. Will Rice (1-28) then removed Newman when he tried to cut Rice over gully. Brydon (21) then came in and supported Friend very well putting on another 40 before Brydon was clean bowled by Cameron Clarke (2-6 off 2 overs) with a beautifully disguised slower ball. Chris Russell (1-39) then got the wicket his bowling deserved before Clarke removed Ben Friend with a perfect yorker with the light going rapidly. Dave Squires (1-7) then got the final wicket before the game ended in very dark conditions with the scoreboard providing more light than the sun to complete a comfortable victory for Petersfield.

Dear All,

Colts’ Open Fun Day on Saturday 8th September 2012

After the season we’ve had, this is our chance at the end of season to have some fun and as it has been extremely popular in previous years, we hope that the weather is kind to us for just one more day.

Mums and dads will have a chance to pitch their skills against their sons and daughters. As in previous years, we are making it an Open Day and inviting any new players to come along and find out about the club and play, meet the coaches and visit our facilities. Please pass this on to anyone you think may be interested.

The final match at 4.00pm will see the best of the colts trying to see if they can show the seniors how to play.

The trophy presentation for the colts will take place the previous evening on Friday 7th September at Petersfield Rugby Club – definitely inside as we’re not risking that being rained off. It starts at 6.30, with the doors opening at 6pm.

Sunday Friendly (family) match Petersfield v Bedhampton 26th August 2012

After yesterdays washout for the 3 senior sides the hope was that the Heath would have dried out enough for play, our fears were allayed as we turned up on a glorious Sunday afternoon. The pitch looked a bit soft and after the toss Petersfield were to bat.

Jack Hannam (56) and Will Rice (10) started brightly despite the bowler extracting some remarkable bounce from the pitch until Will got a ball that did not bounce and almost ran down his bat before trickling onto to his off stump, Will looked back in disbelief at the bails on the floor. Cameron Clarke (31) came out to bat with Jack Hannam putting on a 66 run partnership before Jack got a delivery that like Will did not bounce at all to bowl him. Cameron departed soon after picking out the only Bedhampton fielder (Martin Hovey) who was able to hold on to a catch (keeping up Sunday friendly cricket tradition and dropping 5 catches if not 6) at deep square leg trying to hit another massive 6. Rory Newman (43) joined Harry Hannam (64) and put on 84 for the 5th wicket scoring numerous 4's at around 10 an over to setup some late innings cameos from Dave Squires (11 not out) and Simon Dodd (6). Bedhampton then bought on their star turn young Joe Hovey (2-4 off 1 over) who bowled straight and fooled the batsmen into a couple of false shots, not bad for a 9 year old who made his wicket keeper father’s day getting first team fast bowler Nicky Caddick out with his first ball. Petersfield finished on 240-9.

After a very nice tea (another Sunday tradition) Petersfield took to the field with Dave Squires (1-31) opening the bowling and removing the dangerous wicketkeeper batsmen (Chris Hovey) with his first ball. This bought the keeper’s other son to the wicket (talented family the Hoveys) Harry Hovey (53) putting on 59 with C Smith(19) before Alex Squires (3-33) removed Smith with his dangerous dipping in swinger that causes the batsmen so many problems. Young Joe Hovey (1) came out and did very well against some demon spin bowling from Rice (0-28) and Mark Holloway (1-33) before he parted to a lofted shot to young Caddick, who along with Mark Holloway got revenge (if you can call it that against a 9 year old!) for their earlier dismissals. Martin Hovey (27) then came out and put on 40 with Harry Hovey before he was caught on on the boundary at deep cover by Cameron Clarke (strange symmetry in this game) in an almost identical dismissal to Clarke's earlier in the day. Alex Squires then removed young Hampshire batsman Harry Hovey, he followed this up with the wicket of Quade(4) in his last over to continue his good end of season run in the Sunday team with another 3 wickets pushing Mark Holloway all way for the best bowler award. Some late innings hitting from Mcintyre (45 Not out) and Welland (19) before the former was brilliantly taken by the keeper (Salmon) with a diving catch to his right off Simon Dodd (2-24) following on from his fish like performance for the 2s the previous week. Rory Newman (1-14 off 3 overs) then came off and bowled Welland with an in swinging yorker to finish the game off leaving Bedhampton 39 runs short of their target. This finished off a good game of cricket played in a very friendly atmosphere with a large amount of followers from Bedhampton (not something you see very often).

Petersfield Second XI vs Ashford Hill

Petersfield won by 36 runs

With only 7 players available on the Friday evening, things weren't looking too hopeful for the second XI's visit to Ashford Hill last weekend. But some frantic phone calls and last minute recruitment of the unsuspecting meant that a motley collection of youngsters, Sunday and third team players, dads and a light sprinkling of second team regulars made the long trip to Newbury with the aim of having some fun. It turned out so much better than that.

On a searingly hot day, Petersfield batted first and got off to a great start, father-and-son combination Clive and Henry Shore putting on 63 for the first wicket, making the most of some dropped catches, with Henry (67) in particular hitting some scorching shots to match the weather.

This set a great foundation for Ollie Shapley, straight off a plane, to play his shots in a lively knock of 36. Stand-in skipper Shaun Blanks held the middle order together with a disciplined 25, before some big hitting from Charles (20) in a frenetic 8th wicket partnership with Thomas took 'Field's total to a competitive 196. Game on!

With the wicket very two-paced, Blanks decided pace off the ball was the answer and opened with The Two Bears: Mark 'Grey Bear' Holloway and Liam 'Brown Bear' Charles. The bold decision paid off handsomely, both bowlers combining brilliantly to rip the heart out of the Ashford Hill top order. Holloway, with 3 for 39 (an athletic caught & bowled will live long in the memory!) and Charles, 3 for 36, bowled unchanged for 20 overs and were a real threat throughout - an outstanding performance.

Josh Phipps and Rory Newman continued to apply the pressure, the latter picking up a well deserved wicket. Ashford Hill were always behind the rate and, with wickets falling at vital times, were never allowed to build a substantial partnership. The fielding was sharp, with Phipps and Henry Shore taking crucial catches, Shore's a brilliant effort close in.

Matt Salmon, leaping around behind the stumps like a, er, salmon, also pouched a couple, using his body to good effect as he was blinded by the sun, which was directly behind the bowler's arm. This also caused plenty of difficulties for the batsmen, and no little controversy, either. Unsighted, they took a few blows to the hands from the occasional (accidental, honest) low full toss. Words were exchanged....

The last thing Field's opponents expected or wanted then was to see Blanks steaming in as third change. They had no answer as the captain finished off the lower-middle order (2 for 11 off 6). Despite some hitting out at the end, the damage had been done: Ashford Hill all out for 160.

This was a wonderful effort from a scratch Petersfield outfit who, nonetheless, thoroughly deserved the win, played some great cricket, and above all showed terrific team spirit. Everyone contributed, whether it was Phil 'the Panther' Newman patrolling the fine leg boundary or Richard 'the Antelope' Thomas right under the batsman's nose at silly mid off... Ashford Hill simply didn't know what hit them.

The whole extraordinary match was probably best summed up by Liam Charles' magnificent running catch in the deep to seal the victory, Charles then charging off around the outfield in full Alan Shearer celebration mode, hotly pursued by the entire Petersfield team (well, those still able to move).
