Quiz Night Report

On a warm March evening, 8 teams gathered at St Peters Church Hall for the annual quiz night with Mark Friend’s team looking for a win after 2 years of being pipped at the post. Quizmaster Richard Thomas just made it for the start of the evening after a Jensen Button inspired drive from District training at PGS.

We are Stumped made up of Dee & Andy Salmon and Marcus and Karen Sampson and friends took an early lead helped by the early playing of their joker but with no children on their team, their lead was reduced following the picture round of chocolate bar pictures.

Going into the final 2 rounds, Petersfield Seniors & The Young Ones (Squires and Blakstad) had pulled level with 3rd Time Lucky (Friend, Stratford-Tuke and Cox) only 1/2 point behind. The final round was 10 questions on Hampshire Cricket which had Andy and Marcus truly stumped not knowing the new name of the RoseBowl (Ageas Bowl) and meant that Petersfield Seniors won with 3rd Time Lucky coming in secong again and We are Stumped a close third. Bens Banter boys improving year by year managed to catch Hampshire Rose to finish joint last (well done lads)

The club raised over £200 including money raised from the raffle, but as Nick said in his closing speech although the money is important, the main aim was to have a good night for both adults and children and kick off the new season. Many thanks to both Lisbeth Thomas and Judith Squires for organising and to Richard Thomas for his role as quizmaster.

Fantastic third place finish for indoor U16s

The U16s, hit by injury and unavailability, went down by 52 runs in their final fixture against Fareham & Crofton, but kept their heads to ensure they collected the necessary bonus points to finish third in the league – a tremendous achievement.

Ben Cox, standing in for Petersfield’s crocked captain Caddick, won the toss and asked F&C to bat first, who went on the attack from the outset and amassed a formidable 167 for 3 from their 12 overs. Our bowlers dug in hard and there were deserved wickets for Cox, Newman and young Gabriel Broadhurst. Gabriel, bowling with plenty of flight, could easily have picked up a couple more wickets with a bit more luck.

Chasing a total that was probably always out of reach, ‘Field batted sensibly to reach 115 for 4 and secure those precious batting points. Thomas top scored with 29* with valuable support from Newman (18), Cox (12) and Broadhurst (12).

SEASON SUMMARY

A third place finish was well merited for this talented and dedicated group of players, who worked hard at their game, played some intelligent indoor cricket, and weren’t far away from challenging for the league title itself.

First and foremost, it was a great squad effort throughout the long indoor season, with everyone making major contributions at some time or another.

Alex Thomas finished leading run scorer with 152 (9th in the league rankings) and, with Newman (135 runs; 13th), formed a highly effective batting partnership with sharp shot selection and even sharper running between the wickets.

Ben Cox’s delightful straight hitting earned him 117 runs (18th in the rankings), while Hiscock (109 runs; top score 59) and Caddick (71 runs) were destructive hitters on their day. Friend (76 runs) played solidly when available, and Groves-Hambidge and Broadhurst chipped in with valuable runs as well.

Rory Newman bowled with great skill with the swinging ball to be the leading wicket taker with 7 (7th in the league averages), followed by Cox (6 wickets; 11th) and Caddick (5; 13th), the latter with an impressive economy and strike rate. Hiscock, Friend and Broadhurst were the other wicket-takers.

The strength of the side lay in the quality of their bowling and fielding, which constantly had their opponents under pressure. Indeed they accrued the most bowling points – 51 – in the league by some distance from their nearest rivals (champions Hambledon with 42).

An indication of their sharpness in the field was that 25 of the 45 wickets taken throughout the season came from run-outs. And although the league doesn’t keep detailed fielding stats, it would be a surprise if another ‘keeper matched the 7 stumpings and 1 catch taken by Alex Thomas standing up to the stumps, offering a real attacking threat.

Caddick and Newman took some smart catches in the deep and who can forget the fielding of Alex North in one match, who was involved in three run-outs and took a catch as well.

The U16s should be very proud of their efforts this indoor season. They played some great stuff, showed marvellous team spirit and represented the club with distinction. It certainly bodes well for the summer ahead. Well done lads!

U16s win again to consolidate third place

The U16s continued their strong end to the indoor season with a comfortable win over Portsmouth & Southsea.
Batting first, Petersfield reached 148 for 5 in their 12 overs despite a few run-out mishaps along the way. Alex Thomas top scored with a controlled 41 not out, well supported by Friend (29) and Groves-Hambridge (15).
In reply, P&S got off to a flyer, but once Caddick had bowled the Hampshire opener Perrin for 9, they quickly subsided under a flurry of run-outs to 77 all out, giving Petersfield a winning margin of 71 runs. Newman finished the match in style by bowling the remaining opener Whitworth for 29 with a spectacular in-ducker.
Although maybe not quite at their best, this comprehensive victory virtually secures a third-place finish in the league for the colts. A convincing win against Fareham in the final fixture, and with other results going our way, might even mean an outside chance of second. This would be no more than our U16s deserve after an impressive indoor season.

Club award bodes well for future of cricket in Petersfield

The start of the new cricket season may still be over a month away but Petersfield Cricket Club has already picked up some silverware, winning ‘Club of the Year 2011’ in the East Hampshire Sports Awards, held last month at The Petersfield School.

The award was the fitting culmination of a very successful 12 months for the club, on and off the field. The first and second XIs both gained promotion at the end of last season (the latter for the second year in a row), a second Sunday side and mid-week XI were started, and a newly-formed senior indoor team won promotion at the first time of asking.

Chairman Nick Blakstad was thrilled to receive the Club of the Year award. “This tremendous honour is due to the time, enthusiasm and dedication of our committee, coaches, managers, helpful parents and all our young – and not so young – players, who conduct themselves so well on and off the field and are such fine ambassadors for the club.”

Some 62 adult players represented the club during the 2011 season, including a growing number of players making a return to cricket after a number of years away from the game.

Club captain Chris Wood is delighted with the progress made by the club on the playing front. "It has been many years since the club have enjoyed so much success in a season, made even better because so many younger players made major contributions. It was a great reward for all the huge amount of work put in by the players, coaches, committee and parents who have transformed the club in the last few years."

[SH] Thriving colts section

The club’s colts section continues to thrive, with over 160 young players, both boys and girls, registered with the club.

Last season saw two new teams formed at Under-9 and Under-11 level, eight colts players selected for South-East Hampshire district squads and one for Hampshire, and a new Under-13 girls side started. A total of 28 girls now play for the club with the Club now running 9 colts teams in total.

The Under-17s reached the semi-finals of the County Club Championship, while the Under-15s, who were nominated in the Junior Team of the Year category at the Sports Awards, fought hard to finish in third place in a tough district A league.

The Under-16 indoor side remains in contention for the South-East Hampshire Indoor Cricket League title, played over the winter, with two games still to play.

Other 2011 highlights included the girls squad playing a demonstration game on the Saturday of the first ever test match at the Rose Bowl and the club organising successful Under-11 boys and girls festivals at its home ground on the Heath.

Over 30 ECB-qualified volunteer coaches are helping to unearth the next generation of Kevin Pietersens and Graeme Swanns, six of them in the 16-20 age group.

Colts manager Mark Friend says the youth set-up at the club is going from strength to strength, as demonstrated by the number of talented youngsters who now play for the club’s senior sides – and the new season promises to be even better.

"We have had record numbers of colts attending the 2012 winter nets, supported by the highly qualified and enthusiastic coaches, who are able to provide focused training for individual boys and girls," he says.

"The quality of cricketing talent on display from the Under-7s all the way through to the Under-17s is very encouraging and we are expecting even more colts to breakthrough into senior cricket this season. The club are putting together individual development plans to assist this process."

[SH] Part of the community

Off the field as well, the club had a busy year. A new electronic scoreboard was installed in the pavilion, paid for by a combination of grants and fundraising by the colts. And a charity match featuring a team of local celebrities, including stars on the comedy circuit such as Rufus Hound and Mickey D, and former Scottish rugby international Derek White, raised nearly £5,000 for the Macmillan Cancer Support.

On the other side of the boundary rope, Chris Wood believes it is vital that the club maintains the effort of last season so that it can get back to playing at an appropriate level for a town the size of Petersfield. "This will take the same commitment and hard work as last year," he says. "But with so many very promising youngsters coming through, the future looks very bright. And with the emphasis on encouraging youth, it should mean that a few more of us oldies will be able to step aside and enjoy watching the club progress
