Petersfield II's Win again

MATCH REPORT: Hawkley vs Petersfield IIs
Hawkley’s beautifully scenic ground somehow managed to escape the heavy showers sweeping through the county and play started on time, Petersfield winning the toss and asking their opponents to bat first on a surprisingly firm surface.
Hawkley’s openers started well and Chris Russell did well to remove the dangerous Humphries for 43, taking a sharp caught-and-bowled at the second attempt. However Evans (30) and Burke (42) continued to score freely and, with Petersfield failing to hold on to some difficult chances, a score of over 220 looked on the cards.
Skipper Stephens then made a crucial breakthrough, bowling Evans, before the heavens opened, resulting in a 45-minute rain delay.
On the resumption of play, Petersfield upped their efforts and ripped through the Hawkley middle-lower order. Stephens picked up another couple (8-2-32-3), Windebank generated some genuine pace and aggression (2 for 31) and some sharp fielding resulted in a couple of run-outs. So, despite not getting two nailed-on stumping decisions, Hawkley finished on 187 from their 42 overs. This meant Petersfield’s rain-reduced target was 142 off 27 overs.
Despite losing opener Ben Anscombe early, Thomas (54) and Will Jameson (43) quickly settled into their stride, rarely looking troubled, putting on a 103 for the second wicket. Thomas played fluently, latching onto any loose deliveries, and Jameson’s innings was notable for its impressive straight hitting, the pair comfortably keeping up with the required run rate.
A late wobble caused hearts to flutter as 4 wickets fell in quick succession but the hard work had been done, and Stephens and Turk took the side home to claim victory for ‘Field by 5 wickets.
A great team effort and a convincing win, which deserved to push Petersfield into the promotion spots. However, this was the only match played in the division on a wet weekend, so the vagaries of the points system mean the side remains in 4th, which doesn’t really seem a fitting reward. But the confidence gained will put the 2s in good heart for their next opponents, Medstead, who come to the Heath next weekend.

Petersfield 2s up to 4th

kipper Richard Stephens’ Petersfield IIs claimed their fourth victory of the season on the weekend, beating Odiham & Greywell IIs by 4 wickets at the Heath.

With Odiham batting first, Petersfield made early inroads and kept the pressure on throughout. Oscar Windebank, in his first appearance of the summer, led the way taking 6 for 28, bowling superbly with great skill and variety. He was well supported by Ben Turk (1 for 10 off 8 overs) and Keith Gumbe (0 for 16 in 10), who both showed tremendous control in restricting the scoring.

Alex Thomas behind the stumps picked up a couple of sharp catches and a stumping. Jones (27) and Wiltshire (26) offered the main resistance for Odiham, who finished on 109 for 9 off their 42 overs.

Petersfield started positively in reply, Thomas hitting a brisk 32. However wickets kept falling at regular intervals and it wasn’t until Chris Salmon (16*) and Ben Turk (23*) came together for the 7th wicket that the nerves stopped jangling, the pair putting on an unbeaten 33 to take ‘Field home in 25.3 overs.

This was the second time this season that U15 Turk had been involved a tight run chase, and he again showed an excellent temperament under pressure.

The win that takes Petersfield to 4th in the regional division 2 north table.

Petersfield Sunday XI v Steep

Result: Petersfield CC - Friendly XI - Won by 1 wickets
Type: Friendly
Toss: Steep CC - Sunday 1st XI won the toss and elected to bat
Date: Sunday 22nd June 2014

As above Petersfield captain Dave Squires lost his first toss of the season and the Sunday XI were asked to take to the field on a scorchingly hot day at the Heath.

Ed Davenport (5 overs-0 wickets-16 runs) continued his fine form for the Sunday XI and bowled well without taking a wicket. Oli Simpson (4-0-16) suprised his captain by announcing he did not like using the new ball ! After bowling 2 good overs Oli requested to come off and was replaced by Ben Turk (7-2-22) who removed D Knight (31) with a beautiful full in swinging delivery. Knight was quickly followed by Steep skipper John Smith (14) who survived a very good LBW appeal but then proceeded to wander down the pitch and after a very sharp piece of thinking, was run out. Tom Mccubin (66 not out) came in and batted very well as he looked to rebuild the innings after the openers had been scoring at 5.5 runs an over before they were both out as above on 54. Toby Austin (6-1-12) then removed P Frost for a duck as Liam Charles took a simple catch in the covers. Young Will Yates (Ben Turks best friend) then came in and showed great maturity and batted for 10 overs for his 9, he was unfortunate as Petersfields bowlers had regained the initiative and pulled the scoring back to 3 an over. With Helen Whititaker (4-0-21) and Simon Dodd (6-0-27) baking Toby up only Mccubin was scoring any runs as he moved quickly along to his 50. Will Rice making his opening bow of the Sunday season also bowled tightly only conceding 7 runs off his 4 overs. Ben Turk then removed his best friend Will Yates off the first ball of his comeback over. Steep finished their innings on 136 on a good pitch and a lot of credit must go to Petersfield for how well they bowled and fielded in the hot temperatures as they could easily have wilted.

After a good and plentiful tea provided by Ed Davenport the teams retook the field suitably fed and watered. Jack Hannam (28) and Will Rice (19) set about knocking the target off and as in the Steep innings got Petersfield off to a flying start before Hannam was caught behind off Will Yates (5-1-9)  as ball bounced unexpectedly off a length. Will Rice then hit a double bouncing delivery from Jonh Cosgrove (7-3-21) straight down skipper John Smiths throat at deep midwicket. He trudged off having looked in fabulous nick. Toby Austin (2) then got a spinning delivery from Cosgrove but could only hit it straight back at the bowler. He was quickly followed by Simon Dodd(0) who edged to the keeper. From 54 for no wicket Petesfield found themselves 57-4 a collapse of England proportions. Oli Simpson (13) and Helen Whittaker (15) took the score along to 81 before SImpson got a delivery then went both ways according to the young man as he lost stumps. Skipper Squires came in looking to repeat his long vigil of last week only to last 10 balls this time despite one sweetly timed cover drive for 4. At that stage a victory looked a long way off with the score on 89-6. Helen continued to bat well and she and Ben Turk (25) took the score along to 98 before Helen was out bowled by the very effective Steep skipper John Smith (7.4-3-31). So it was then all down to Ben Turk, Liam Charles and Alex Squires to try and get their skipper his first home win of the season. Ben and Liam (21 not out) took Petersfield to within 10 runs of victory when Ben holed out to midon trying to hit another 4. This left just Alex Squires (an average of 2 last season) and Liam to see the Sunday XI over the line. Alex blocked 5 balls then there was a big shout for LBW against him. He survived this and the last ball of the over needing just 6 to win. Liam Charles took the scores level as he and Squires scrambled for a couple of 2s. Liam then proceeded to hit John Smith over deep midwicket for 6 to take them home. A good game played between two evenly matched sides that proved even the closet of rivals can get on.

Man of the Match - Liam Charles again for his batting, bowling and catch
Moment of the match - Helen Whittakers fielding at square leg as she stopped 3 4s off 3 balls making it all look very very easy.

Petersfield u13s lose to Waterlooville

Petersfield U13s v Waterlooville U13s
Result: Waterlooville CC - Under 13 - Won by 7 wickets

Petersfield bounced back from the Old Netley result with a superb bowling performance but were not able to defend their first innings total

Waterlooville requested to bat first to allow 3 of their players to get to a football tournament !
Petersfield were happy to help the opposition out and Joe Clarke (4) put on 15 for the first wicket before Clarke mistimed a front foot drive to mid off. Will Milner-Smith (31 retired not out) kept the scoreboard ticking along as Waterlooville bowled a number of wides. The next four batsmen hung around but did not score many runs. Without Will Milner-Smith who showed he could play a controlled innings the Petersfield effort would not have troubled the Waterlooville batters but when he was retired in the 16th over after a good partnership with Max Saint (8 not out) the score was 70. Petersfield were tormented by Matthew Johnstone (3 overs - 3 wickets for 21 runs) and Alistair Wilson (2-2-6) and they finished on 78 runs. The coach drilled in to the lads that they had defended a similar total earlier this season.

Joe Clarke (3.2-1-3)  opened the bowling and removed Rob Quinn (1) in the 3rd over with the score on 15. At the other end Tom Greene (25) was timing the ball superbly well and he punished anything down the leg side. Tommy Mathews (4-1- 20) removed Tom Seve (7) and he was quickly followed by Greene as he lobbed the ball to Cameron Porteous who took a good catch in the covers. The score was on 37-3 and with the big hitting Greene out Petersfield started to believe they could take a win. Max Saint was bowling tightly (4-1-26) along with Ben Kay (2-0-7) who justified his coaches request to the captain to give the lad a bowl having not bowled the last couple of games. Waterlooville captain Will Doyle (14 not out) and Toby Sambles (27 not out) saw Waterlooville to victory but credit has to go to the Petersfield bowlers and fielders who did not concede any wides in their 15.2 overs bowled.

A good game played on a good pitch on a perfect Sunday morning at the Heath

Man of the Match - Will Milner-Smith
Moment of the match - Cameron Porteous’s straight drive off his first ball faced, straight out of the text book

A tale of the 2s the last few weeks

Petersfield 2s have been on something of an odyssey these past few weeks, taking them from despair in deepest north-west Hampshire to triumph outside Basingstoke via a memorable afternoon at a flooded Heath.
Petersfield 2s - match reports vs Upper Clatford, Twyford and St Mary's................
Let’s get the Upper Clatford debacle out of the way first. Tucked away in a beautiful rural idyll near Andover is a rutted, long-grassed farmer’s field on a hill where, to most people’s disbelief, cricket matches actually take place. Having blundered through a posh society wedding on the way to the ground, ‘Field lost the toss and were asked to bat. It was downhill from there.
Skipper Rich Stephens hit a defiant 23, Rich Thomas, batting like Boycott on Mogadon, hung around for a while (Chris Russell, umpiring at the time, denied he fell asleep, but was “resting his eyes”), but it was a struggle as the side limped to 70 all out.
‘Field fought hard in the field (as it were), Ed Davenport taking 3 for 22, but Clatford overhauled an inadequate total for the loss of 4 wickets. The playing conditions were, shall we say, less than ideal, but it was the same for both sides and our opponents probably exploited them better. So a chastening defeat, but the Crook and Shears was a splendid village pub to hold the post-match debrief.
‘Field rain supreme at the Heath
The following week, back at home, the heavens opened on the morning of the match against Twyford. After a futile dash to Penned-in Place to grab the covers and with pools of water on the square at a sodden Heath, it seemed impossible that the match would be played.
Field Marshall Russell, C, however, thought differently. Refusing to look defeat in the eye, supported by the two Richards, Stephens and Thomas, plus Dave Squires and Merlin, mopping up operations commenced. He drove his men hard: over a hundred buckets of surface water were chucked away, plus plenty of brushing and forking (don’t tell Andy). With the sun by now shining, the match incredibly started only half-an-hour late. It was an heroic effort. Now we just had to win the game.
The playing surface behaved pretty well despite the dampness and ‘Field bowled impressively to skittle Twyford out for 105. Russell (4 for 8) and Turk (3 for 33) were the pick of the bowlers. However wickets were lost early in the reply (at one point Petersfield were 3 for 3) and at regular intervals thereafter, and it took the cool heads of Russell (20), Chris Wood (27) and a very mature performance from young Ben Turk, who held his nerve brilliantly in scoring 22*, to guide the team home by 2 wickets. A brave, gutsy win.
The chase is on
On Saturday, the team travelled to Basingstoke to play St Mary’s, a side who, as its website states, “aims to play cricket competitively but fairly and in good humour reflecting the Christian faith that underpins the club”. In which case, God must have been a sledger because the first slip didn’t stop yapping away all match…
Anyway, on another damp, glacially slow service, the opposition (who were actually a good bunch) got of to a flyer, taking advantage of some loose bowling. It took another great spell by the impressive Turk (3 for 32) to put the breaks on, removing the dangerous opener Lee, caught and bowled for 61, when a score of 240+ looked on the cards. But with Blanks (4 for 27), on loan from the first team, coming back to mop up the tail and skipper Stephens also picking up a couple, St Mary’s finished on a still healthy-looking 194.
In reply Thomas A. and Allerston (10) started steadily and Blanks injected some momentum with a quick-fire 17. Weymss went first-ball bringing Christie Salmon to the crease in his first appearance of the season. After surviving a few wobbles early on, he rode his luck, got his feet moving and began to dominate the bowling, eventually scoring a fine 81* in 76 balls.
Together with Thomas, who scored 58*, the pair put on an unbeaten 123 partnership featuring some big hitting (both players managed to lose the ball in the next-door farmer’s field) and sharp running between the wickets, taking Petersfield home with 4 overs to spare. For the second time in four matches, opener Thomas remained not out at the end and hit the winning runs.
This was an impressive run chase by the ‘Field top order in pursuit of what appeared quite a stiff total. Tougher challenges no doubt lie ahead, starting with Odiham next Saturday, but afterwards, in a charming hostelry called the Fox, the ream could reflect on its third win out of four matches, 5th place in the table and a job well done. Bring on next week.
Comedy moment – Thomas (snr) showing Balotelli-like ball skills on the boundary and revealing why Wales didn’t make it to Brazil…

Sunday XI match reports from last 2 weeks

Petersfield Sunday XI match reports

After gaining their first win of the Friendly season having beaten Liss the Sunday side have suffered 2 defeats on the trot losing to Emswoth last weekend after bowling the guests out for 106. Yesterday the Sunday XI lost to Hayling Island by 70 runs.

The Emsworth game did not get off to the greatest of starts with both sides reduced to 9 men by injury and unforeseen circumstances. Haque (34) batted very well as Hayling were asked to bat first. He was the only one to score heavily as Petersfields bowlers bowled very very well with every single one of them picking up a wicket with Ed Davenport picking up 2.

There was a notable first for the club as Helen Whitaker became the first lady to play for the Sunday side. Helen bowled very well and took 1 wicket for 5 runs off her 3 overs and created another first obviously.

The Petersfield innings got off to a now familiar bad start as they lost 3 wickets for 22 runs off of 6 overs. Ben Anscombe (40) was batting very well and was looking comfortable and with Ben Turk (16) they rebuilt the innings innings before Ben was out LBW to G WIld (4 overs 4 wickets for 8 runs). When Ben got himself out stumped going down the wicket to G Dunn (1.2-1-7) the innings was over and Petersfield were 30 runs short of their target.

Man of the Match - Ben Anscombe for his runs, wicket and catch
Moment of the Match - Helen picking up her first wicket with a lovely delivery.

Moving on to this Sunday

A slightly less eventful run up to the match than the previous week led to the game being switched to another ground due to waterlogging at The Heath.

Captain Squires won the toss again (4 out of 5) and asked Hayling to bat to get the most out of the new ball.

Ed Davenport (8 overs 2 wickets 35 runs) and LIam Charles (5.5-3-9) opened the bowling and Charles picked up the first wicket of A Johnson well caught by Dan May at midoff. Davenport then picked up J Oram (3) clean bowled. Young J Steele came out and played a lovely late cut down to 3rd man but decided to run 2 and was a good yard short as Rich Stephens threw the ball in over the stumps, Squires doing the rest. Another run out then stopped K Dyke (9) long batting innings as he played a cover drive to Rob Allerston who winged the ball in over the stumps the only issue with the throw was it was 4 ft above the stumps, Keeper Squires managed to get a glove to it and in one movement threw down the stumps directly below him. Poor old Dyke thought he was safe when he saw the throw but alas it was not to be.

D Garvin (31) and M Hallett (59) then took a liking to the Petersfield bowling punishing John Childs in particular on his debut for the Sundayt XI. The pair put on 78 runs for the 5th wicket as Petersfield toiled in the field. Charles and Davenport returned to pick up the 2 batsmen and the score reached 201 with 44 wides and 7 no balls !

A very nice tea provided by Pat Hannam following the 1s game being called off the previous day. If that is the standard of the tea in the 1s no wonder they want to play that level !

Bob Wemyss (0) and Dave Squires (24) opened the batting but Bob followed a rising delivery and it took an edge to be well caught at first slip. Rich Stephens (11) then joined Squires and was looking very comfortable until he called Squires through for a single. As they passed RIch shout oh no and was just short of his ground as the ball winged in from short fine leg to hit the stumps. Rob Allerston (0) then got a ball which jagged back to leave Petersfield 17-3. Squires (normally a number 8 bat) had dug in to try and anchor the inning and allow others to play around him. Charles (29)  came out and came out and looked comfortable until he mistimed a back cut to be caught at point. Thanks to his contribution the score had moved along to 65. Ben Kirby (5) then came and went although played a lovely shot over mid wicket for 4.

John Childs (9) joined Squires and they took the score along to 107 before he was trapped LBW by young Ben Loghurst (8-2-29). This then caused a collapse as Ben’s father John Longhurst (5-3-13)  ended Squires innings trapping him LBW, Mark Holloway (0) got a first baller before Nick Woodruff (12) and then Dan May (4) took the score to 128.

Man of the Match - Liam Charles for his all round display even after taking a blow to his elbow
Moment of the Match - Squires’s run out of Dyke (how did he do that)

Under 13 match report

Match reports for the Under 13 games against Fareham & Crofton and Old Netley

After 2 away games in a week Petersfield ended up with 1 win and 1 defeat

Sunday 8th June Petersfield travelled to Fareham and were asked to field first
After an initial onslaught from the Fareham opening bat V Sahu (30 retired not out) who looked a class above to the other batsmen of Fareham, playing some wonderful shots on the up.

The opening partnership was broken by some more wonderful fielding from Tommy Matthews as he ran out T Peary (2) with the score on 21. O Pratt (10) then joined Sahu and they took the score along to 45 before Matthews did it again with a fine throw to run Pratt out.

Oscar Maclean (4 overs 3 wickets 7 runs) then came on and bowled a superb line and length bowling fantastically well for the 2nd week on the trot picking up the middle order of Fareham as the run rate was slowed considerably by Mclean and Harvey Baker (4-0-11).
Max Saint (2-3-2)  then replaced Harvey Baker and out did his close friend Oscar as he picked up a double wicket maiden in his first over and was a coat of varnish away from a hatrick.

With Tommy Matthews (1-0-0) and Saint bowling the last overs Fareham finished their innings on 80 runs

The Petersfield innings got off to a bad start when skipper Joe Clarke lost his middle stump to good ball from C Rumbles (4-1-4). The chase was moving along slowly and when Will Milner-Smith (11) got out to Harrington (3-1-15) the score was on 28 in the 8 over. Max Saint (28 not out) and Tommy Matthews (31 not out) then steadied the ship and they kept things ticking along nicely against some tight Fareham bowling. With 5 over left the rate had risen to 6 an over but the pair showed great maturity as they did not panic and punished anything short and wide with Matthews in particular hitting some big shots on the on-side. The pair saw Petersfield home in the last over of the game as Matthews powerfully pulled Perry to the mid-wicket boundary for 4. A very good advert for the U13 A league

Men of the Match - Tommy Matthews and Max Saint for their all round efforts with Bat, Ball and in the field
Moment of the Match - Will Milner Smith for his superb catch at square leg diving forward

This game was quickly followed by a game at Old Netley on Wednesday 11th June Petersfield travelled to Old Netley. The game got off to a bad start when there was a bad accident on the M27 meaning a delayed start to the game. This forced the coaches to reduce the overs to 16 to get the game in before the light faded.

Petersfield batted first but just lost wickets at too regularly and if it had not been for the wides and no balls conceded would only have made 40 odd runs and with the exception of WIll Milner-Smith (13) no one made it into double figures. Old Netley then made a very short work of the chase as Petersfield bowled too short and the game was over in the 9th over as they chased down the total losing only 2 wickets. The late and disrupted start did not help and the coach put it down to that and just one of those days

Petersfield Sunday XI v Liss ( Jim Lintott Memorial Match)

Result: Petersfield CC - Friendly XI - Won by 39 runs

The picture left to right of the Petersfield Sunday XI

Shaun Blanks, Ed Davenport, Ben Turk, Oli Simpson, Ben Kirby, Mark Holloway, Dave Squires (Capt + Wkt), David Longland, Rob Allerston, Nick Woodruff and Richard Stephens

Petersfield travelled the short distance to Liss to play in the inaugural  Jim Lintott Memorial Match
in memory of the Liss,Hawkley and Petersfield groundsman who sadly passed away last year.
Jim worked tirelessly for all 3 clubs over many years and this game is a fitting way to celebrate his life and love for cricket and the three clubs.

Petersfield Captain Dave Squires won the toss and decided to bat on a warm and sunny afternoon. Having lost his opening bat in the morning to injury and with half the team stuck in Petersfield due to an accident closing the A3 it seemed a sensible thing to do. Liss opened the bowling with J Bristow (8 overs 2 wickets for 18 runs) and he removed skipper Squires who had moved himself from his usual number 11 to open (for the good of the team !!) lasted 3 overs before getting a faint nick to the left arm seamer.
Rob Allerston (7 off 30) then battled through with Shaun Blanks (14) to take the score to 27-2 before the partnership was broken by J Bristow.

When Allerston lost his wicket with the score on 37 the wheels started to come off as young Ben Turk (0) was clean bowled first up to leave Oli Simpson (18) to face the first of the hat-trick chances of the day. He survived this and Richard Stephens who had been called up late took the score on to 42-5.
Enter David Longland (18)  and Oli Simpson (18)  who punished any bad balls (and there were not a lot of them) and the pair pushed the score along nicely before David missed a straight delivery that kept low and was bowled by R Pleace Snr. Simpson and Mark Holloway (12 not out) kept the scoreboard ticking over and took the score beyond 98 before Simpson was out caught and bowled by C Hedicker (4-1-15). Once Simpson was out Ed Davenport (12 not out) joined Mark Holloway  to set a total of 116. The score looked well below par on a good wicket even with the variable bounce.

Liss got off to a steady start  with the help of Petersfield skipper keeping for the first time this year missing one edge and conceding 10 byes in the first 3 overs. Ed Davenport (4-3-3) removed opener R Lewis (2) clean bowled.
At the other end Shaun Blanks got his reward for a superb line and length when he first removed R Pleace Snr caught behind by Squires low down off a thick outside edge. He then removed Liss skipper C Allcock (0) from the next ball it clipped the glove and Squires took the catch behind the stumps leaving the score on 19-3.. The hat trick ball passed by without incident but a double wicket maiden was still superb.
Ed Davenport (also bowling superbly) then got keeper G Kemp (9) to get an under edge which Squires again took comfortably in front of 1st slip (the memory of the byes and missed chance fading away with each delivery). Ed then clean bowled J Hedicker (0) in the same over with a ball that pitched on middle and took the top of off stump out of the ground and Liss were reeling on 24-5. Richard Pleace Jnr then came to the crease and as usual steadied the ship taking the score along to 62 before Mark Holloway (2-1-2) then removed J Birstow (17)  with the first ball of his spell when the young man played back to a straight delivery when he needed to get forward

Squires then turned to young Ben Turk (3.3 - 3-15) and he was rewarded as the young man  removed the very very dangerous Pleace with a full length delivery that hit the pad half way up but in line and despite the big stride would have taken middle stump out. Turk followed that up with the next delivery to remove Matt Evans(0) clean bowled. This set up the 3rd hat trick chance of this eventful match. This was survived with ease as per the rest.

Petersfield really believed at this point the game was theirs to win. D Chambers (12)  then came to the crease with a runner having pulled a hamstring and proceeded to punish anything short from Turk.
After Holloway bowled a maiden young Turk then wrapped up the innings as Chambers missed a straight delivery and the ball clattered into his middle stump and Petersfield had won the game by 39 runs.

Petersfield Sunday XI picking up their first win of the season,  first trophy of 2014 (Jim Lintott shield) and Squires claimed his first win as captain.

A superb game of cricket played in a wonderful atmosphere and a fitting tribute to the clubs groundsman. The game will now be contested each year between the clubs and hopefully will be played in the same spirit and produce such good entertainment for the large crowds who everyone hopes will turn up each year.

Man of the Match - Has to got to Ed Davenport for his 12 not out and his superb bowling spell
Moment of the match - Ben Kirby’s superb straight drive for 4 (not bad for a lad playing only his 4th ever game of cricket)
Well done to the whole Petersfield team for how they bowled, fielded (well apart from the byes) and played the game a credit to their Club and Captain.

Petersfield under 15 v Havant 30-05-2014

Petersfield under 15s v Havant u15s

Petersfield under 15s won by 2 runs

On a damp and dead pitch Petersfield picked up their second win of the season with a thrilling 2 run win.

Petersfield were asked to bat in the early evening sunshine and got off to a steady start as the openers Dan Parry (9) and Gabriel Broadhurst (35 retired not out) scored 20 before Parry misjudged a full delivery to lose his middle stump. Ben Anscombe (17) joined Broadhurst at the wicket and put 49 runs on before Broadhurst retired not out with the score on 69 in the 15th over as Havant kept it tight with some good spin from Bobby Dyer (4 overs 2 wickets 9 runs and Max Carter (4-0-21) to keep the scoring rate to around 4 runs an over. Once Anscombe went stumped off Dyer the batting order was changed as Captain Oli Simpson (11 not out), Matt Friend (0), Alfie Casson (3) and Ben Turk ran every run possible including one single where the ball did not leave the crease but Simpson managed to nick a single.

The coach advised the Petersfield lads that their total of 89 was defendable with ball not coming through or bouncing a lot.

Havant got off to a steady start as Petersfield did with Captain Sam Robinson (7) and Charlie Potter (6) put on 16 for the first wicket. When Potter departed with the score on 22 clean bowled by Ben Turk (4-1-10) Petersfield started to believe they could win although Havant were ahead of the run rate. Bobby Dyer (35 retired not out) and Jack Davies (9) then took the score on to 57 with 7 overs left as the pair punished anything short with Matt Friend being pulled for 3 consecutive 4s as his first 2 overs went for 17.

Ben Anscombe (4-1-19) bowled well at the other end, he picked up Davies off his own bowling having seen him dropped 2 balls earlier. Dyer then retired not out and it was down to the young middle and lower order to see Havant home needing 20 off the last 6 overs. Ed Milford (4-0-17) then proved to be the trump card in the pack as his tight bowling started to put the pressure on Havant as they felt they needed to push the scoring along and although he did not pick up a wicket he bowled very well in conjunction with Anscombe at the other end. Ben Turk ran out Tom Goddard (1) as Havant tried to sneek a quick single to backward point. Then Rory Classen (1-1-7) picked up young Charlie Dean caught at square leg as she misjudged one of the few straight balls Classen bowled.

Max Carter was next to go being run out superbly by Ben Turk from backward point again with a direct hit with the score on 82-6 in the 18th over. Ben Turk then returned to bowl a maiden over just at the right time. The final over fell to Matt Friend and with the crowd holding their breath he proceeded to bowl brilliantly taking 1 wicket and causing 2 run outs (both to Casson) to concede only 3 runs and clinch victory for Petersfield

Moment of the match - Ben Turk's second run out
Man of the Match - very difficult but for his 35 to set up the total Gabe Broadhurst. Special mention to all the fielders and to the bowlers for a very good defence of a reasonable total.
