Petersfield under 15 v Havant 30-05-2014

Petersfield under 15s v Havant u15s

Petersfield under 15s won by 2 runs

On a damp and dead pitch Petersfield picked up their second win of the season with a thrilling 2 run win.

Petersfield were asked to bat in the early evening sunshine and got off to a steady start as the openers Dan Parry (9) and Gabriel Broadhurst (35 retired not out) scored 20 before Parry misjudged a full delivery to lose his middle stump. Ben Anscombe (17) joined Broadhurst at the wicket and put 49 runs on before Broadhurst retired not out with the score on 69 in the 15th over as Havant kept it tight with some good spin from Bobby Dyer (4 overs 2 wickets 9 runs and Max Carter (4-0-21) to keep the scoring rate to around 4 runs an over. Once Anscombe went stumped off Dyer the batting order was changed as Captain Oli Simpson (11 not out), Matt Friend (0), Alfie Casson (3) and Ben Turk ran every run possible including one single where the ball did not leave the crease but Simpson managed to nick a single.

The coach advised the Petersfield lads that their total of 89 was defendable with ball not coming through or bouncing a lot.

Havant got off to a steady start as Petersfield did with Captain Sam Robinson (7) and Charlie Potter (6) put on 16 for the first wicket. When Potter departed with the score on 22 clean bowled by Ben Turk (4-1-10) Petersfield started to believe they could win although Havant were ahead of the run rate. Bobby Dyer (35 retired not out) and Jack Davies (9) then took the score on to 57 with 7 overs left as the pair punished anything short with Matt Friend being pulled for 3 consecutive 4s as his first 2 overs went for 17.

Ben Anscombe (4-1-19) bowled well at the other end, he picked up Davies off his own bowling having seen him dropped 2 balls earlier. Dyer then retired not out and it was down to the young middle and lower order to see Havant home needing 20 off the last 6 overs. Ed Milford (4-0-17) then proved to be the trump card in the pack as his tight bowling started to put the pressure on Havant as they felt they needed to push the scoring along and although he did not pick up a wicket he bowled very well in conjunction with Anscombe at the other end. Ben Turk ran out Tom Goddard (1) as Havant tried to sneek a quick single to backward point. Then Rory Classen (1-1-7) picked up young Charlie Dean caught at square leg as she misjudged one of the few straight balls Classen bowled.

Max Carter was next to go being run out superbly by Ben Turk from backward point again with a direct hit with the score on 82-6 in the 18th over. Ben Turk then returned to bowl a maiden over just at the right time. The final over fell to Matt Friend and with the crowd holding their breath he proceeded to bowl brilliantly taking 1 wicket and causing 2 run outs (both to Casson) to concede only 3 runs and clinch victory for Petersfield

Moment of the match - Ben Turk's second run out
Man of the Match - very difficult but for his 35 to set up the total Gabe Broadhurst. Special mention to all the fielders and to the bowlers for a very good defence of a reasonable total.
