Petersfield travelled the short distance to Liss to play in the inaugural Jim Lintott Memorial Match
in memory of the Liss,Hawkley and Petersfield groundsman who sadly passed away last year.
Jim worked tirelessly for all 3 clubs over many years and this game is a fitting way to celebrate his life and love for cricket and the three clubs.
Petersfield Captain Dave Squires won the toss and decided to bat on a warm and sunny afternoon. Having lost his opening bat in the morning to injury and with half the team stuck in Petersfield due to an accident closing the A3 it seemed a sensible thing to do. Liss opened the bowling with J Bristow (8 overs 2 wickets for 18 runs) and he removed skipper Squires who had moved himself from his usual number 11 to open (for the good of the team !!) lasted 3 overs before getting a faint nick to the left arm seamer.
Rob Allerston (7 off 30) then battled through with Shaun Blanks (14) to take the score to 27-2 before the partnership was broken by J Bristow.
When Allerston lost his wicket with the score on 37 the wheels started to come off as young Ben Turk (0) was clean bowled first up to leave Oli Simpson (18) to face the first of the hat-trick chances of the day. He survived this and Richard Stephens who had been called up late took the score on to 42-5.
Enter David Longland (18) and Oli Simpson (18) who punished any bad balls (and there were not a lot of them) and the pair pushed the score along nicely before David missed a straight delivery that kept low and was bowled by R Pleace Snr. Simpson and Mark Holloway (12 not out) kept the scoreboard ticking over and took the score beyond 98 before Simpson was out caught and bowled by C Hedicker (4-1-15). Once Simpson was out Ed Davenport (12 not out) joined Mark Holloway to set a total of 116. The score looked well below par on a good wicket even with the variable bounce.
Liss got off to a steady start with the help of Petersfield skipper keeping for the first time this year missing one edge and conceding 10 byes in the first 3 overs. Ed Davenport (4-3-3) removed opener R Lewis (2) clean bowled.
At the other end Shaun Blanks got his reward for a superb line and length when he first removed R Pleace Snr caught behind by Squires low down off a thick outside edge. He then removed Liss skipper C Allcock (0) from the next ball it clipped the glove and Squires took the catch behind the stumps leaving the score on 19-3.. The hat trick ball passed by without incident but a double wicket maiden was still superb.
Ed Davenport (also bowling superbly) then got keeper G Kemp (9) to get an under edge which Squires again took comfortably in front of 1st slip (the memory of the byes and missed chance fading away with each delivery). Ed then clean bowled J Hedicker (0) in the same over with a ball that pitched on middle and took the top of off stump out of the ground and Liss were reeling on 24-5. Richard Pleace Jnr then came to the crease and as usual steadied the ship taking the score along to 62 before Mark Holloway (2-1-2) then removed J Birstow (17) with the first ball of his spell when the young man played back to a straight delivery when he needed to get forward
Squires then turned to young Ben Turk (3.3 - 3-15) and he was rewarded as the young man removed the very very dangerous Pleace with a full length delivery that hit the pad half way up but in line and despite the big stride would have taken middle stump out. Turk followed that up with the next delivery to remove Matt Evans(0) clean bowled. This set up the 3rd hat trick chance of this eventful match. This was survived with ease as per the rest.
Petersfield really believed at this point the game was theirs to win. D Chambers (12) then came to the crease with a runner having pulled a hamstring and proceeded to punish anything short from Turk.
After Holloway bowled a maiden young Turk then wrapped up the innings as Chambers missed a straight delivery and the ball clattered into his middle stump and Petersfield had won the game by 39 runs.
Petersfield Sunday XI picking up their first win of the season, first trophy of 2014 (Jim Lintott shield) and Squires claimed his first win as captain.
A superb game of cricket played in a wonderful atmosphere and a fitting tribute to the clubs groundsman. The game will now be contested each year between the clubs and hopefully will be played in the same spirit and produce such good entertainment for the large crowds who everyone hopes will turn up each year.
Man of the Match - Has to got to Ed Davenport for his 12 not out and his superb bowling spell
Moment of the match - Ben Kirby’s superb straight drive for 4 (not bad for a lad playing only his 4th ever game of cricket)
Well done to the whole Petersfield team for how they bowled, fielded (well apart from the byes) and played the game a credit to their Club and Captain.
