Petersfield 1s slip to 3rd

Petersfield 1st XI slip to third after loss to Longparish.
Longparish’s good all round seam attack were disciplined, patient and accurate. Harry Martin (10-1-32) was outstanding for Longparish, able to use a green patch on a length, he frequently bowled unplayable deliveries and frustrated Petersfield’s top order. Despite a fast outfield Petersfield could only limp to 75-3 after 22 overs. Thereafter, Shaun Blanks (46) played positively hitting an exquisite six off Martin. When he was caught off Alex Coetzee with 5 overs remaining any hope of reaching 200 faded and Petersfield were restricted to 173 all out. Coetzee finished with an impressive 6 wicket haul though in truth this had much to do with the pressure the other Longparish bowlers had managed to create.
After setting a low target Petersfield needed to be aggressive and take early wickets. However in stark contrast to Longparish’s opening bowlers, Petersfield were wayward and failed to utilise the helpful wicket and wasted the new ball. Opener Michael Taplin smashed 60 off 30 balls and Longparish made 73 from the first 7 overs; dropped twice while in the 20s and 30s, these misses would prove costly.
Undeterred, Petersfield refused to give up hope. Skipper Damian Carson turned to his slow bowlers Keith Gumbe (10-1-24) and Mark Stanley (10-2-14). Bowling in tandem, the run rate dramatically reduced, Carson then chipped in with 2 wickets of his own and at 132-5 Longparish were looking surprisingly shaky. However with 17 overs remaining it wasn’t to be and Longparish were able to nurdle their way over the line without taking any further risks.
A game to be forgotten, Petersfield were bitterly disappointed with their collective effort with only Blanks, Gumbe and Stanley performing to somewhere near their best. Petersfield will be back at The Heath on Saturday more determined to display their talent against Compton & Chandlers Ford.

Petersfield 2s win again to remain top of the league.

On what felt like the hottest day of the year Petersfield  2s welcomed Hambledon 3s to the Heath. Hambledon's skipper called wrong and to the relief of the Petersfield players, skipper Richard Stephens elected to bat first.

Richard himself was out in the 2nd over edging through to the keeper off Garin Chapman (2 for 39). Chris Russell was run out with the score on 30 trying to push a 2 to third man but hesitated and was a yard short of his ground. This bought under 15 Ben Anscombe (88) to the crease and he played a couple of glorious cover drives to get his innings moving. Ben and Will Rice (112 not out) played chanceless cricket to take the score too 90-2 when Will played a very uncharacteristic lofted drive to long off but this was dropped by the Hambledon player off his son's bowling. A few overs later Ben was dropped at gully off Tom Toogood's bowling.

The pair discussed taking advantage of the lives they had been given and couldn't have made much more of the chance as they went on to put on 198 for the 3rd wicket with Ben only getting out in the 41st over trying to push the score on and get himself to a hundred. When he edged Chapman through to the keeper. With 10 overs left the score was 150 the skipper was hoping to get to 220 but the way Rice and Anscombe accelerated took the score up to 240 at the end. Will played beautifully for his 112 and was superbly supported by Ben who got his first adult 50 for the club (well played lads)

Opening bowlers Oscar Windebank (4-54) and Frank Straw (2-22) bowled well without any reward before Grennan (8) was clean bowled by Oscar. Oscar then removed Bridgman (14) caught behind by keeper Will Jameson who was enjoying the consistent bounce from the Heath pitch compared with last week. Rogers (51) scored well at the other end throwing his bat at anything wide of the stumps. Steve Toogood was clean bowled by Chris Russell (1-36). Rogers was joined by Lewis le Clerq (51) and the pair got away with 3 chances before finally Chris Wood (2-39) had a catch held at long off to remove Rogers. The 2s aversion to catching the ball seemed to be catching (excuse the pun) with 3 different players dropping catches.

Once Rogers went Shinn (23) joined Le Clerq and although Hambledon were way behind the scoring rate they frustrated Petersfield's bowlers before Le Clerq quickly followed Shinn as the opening bowlers returned to give Petersfield a chance of picking up maximum bowling points. Despite some great keeping and a superb catch from Steve Gibson at gully Petersfield could not get the maximum bowling points as Hambledon finished on 180-9.

Another good win for Petersfield 2s picking up 23 points to keep their place at the top of the league. Onwards and upwards for the 2s.

Men of the match - Will Rice and Ben Anscombe for that 198 run partnership.

Special mentions to Oscar for  his 4 wickets and Will Jameson behind the stumps with 3 catches and a stumping (although not given)

Petersfield Under 15s top of the league

After the loss in the first game of the season Petersfield under 15s have bounced back winning 4 games on the bounce. Skipper Gabe Broadhurst is leading from the front ably supported by the whole team who are playing some wonderful cricket

On Tuesday this week the lads took on Burridge and restricted them to 58 before knocking them off with the loss of only 2 wickets. The bowling and fielding was high class and setup the victory where Gabe Broadhurst (not out this season at this level) scored a fluid 36 retired not out to see the lads home.

On Thursday the lads took on Sarisbury and beat them by 7 wickets restricting a team who score 192-1 last week to 91 ! Again the fielding and bowling is the big highlight of the season so far with Ben Turk leading the way with 13 wickets at 3 runs apiece!

The team has their stars but every player who has played this season has contributed in the field with catches, run outs, wickets and run saving fielding. 5 different players have retired, 8 different bowlers have picked up wickets and 3 different players have forced run outs.

As with any cricket team the success of the team comes from the captain and the way he leads the side. Gabe has stepped in to this role fantastically well to keep the tradition of good captains from the last few years at Under 15 level.

Under 7 and under 9 training 26th June

Dear All,
Tomorrow evening’s training will take place at Churcher’s College ground at Penns Place, situated behind our ground.
The entrance is on the right approx. 100 yds before you would normally turn right from Penns Place for the car park adjacent to our ground.  There is limited parking in front of the blue gates at the entrance so you may need to park at the Taro centre or at Penns Place and walk back I am afraid.
We have moved to Churcher’s ground to accommodate two colts games ( under 13 (at the heath) and under 11 (at Penns place)) tomorrow night, we will have the ground to ourselves.
Sorry for the change to training.
See you all tomorrow evening.
Cheers

Petersfield 1s remain second

Petersfield 1st XI remain second in Hampshire CL County Division 2 as Bishops Waltham falter.
With dark clouds hovering throughout the day, 80% humidity and a tinge of green on the wicket, skipper Damian Carson had no hesitation after winning the toss about making Redlynch and Hale bat first on what looked like a bowlers’ paradise – and so it would prove.
Redlynch and Hale got off to the worst possible start with in form Ian Tanner failing to keep out a low one from Ben Turk, playing on for just 6. Mark Stanley (10-4-28) was in superb form, deftly alternating his length, swinging and turning the ball at will; Stanley removed the rest of the top order. Youngster Ben Turk (8.5-3-15) continued to bowl a nagging length and deservedly picked up 3 wickets, all bowled as Redlynch & Hale faltered. Only Willoughby and Weber could make the 20s. All out for 115 from 37.5 overs, with extras top scoring, the total was never going to be enough.
Petersfield, in a rush to finish the game, were perhaps guilty of playing a few too many loose shorts and not giving the Redlynch & Hale bowlers enough respect given the conditions. Ash Spencer, Shaun Blanks and Andy Barnes all made breezy 25s but wickets regularly fell and it was left to keeper Harry Lambert and Damian Carson to hit the last 20 runs as the rain fell. Winning in the 22nd over, victory was swift but at the cost of 7 wickets.
The gap at the top of the league has narrowed: Bishops Waltham lost to Longparish, who will be Petersfield’s opponent this Saturday.

Petersfield 2s Win thrilling match

Petersfield 2s travelled to Hedge End to play 3rd placed Friends. With a rock hard outfield and a patchy dry pitch skipper Rich Stephens won the toss and put the opposition in.

Oscar Windebank (10 overs 1 for 29) and Nicky Caddick (5.5 / 2 / 29) opened the bowling and they were causing problems for the openers without any reward with both bowlers getting movement off the pitch. Nicky was taken off after 5 overs to be replaced by Frank Straw (7 /  2 / 33) as the pace attack continued. In Frank's 3rd over opener S Ward (22) played one too many lofted shots and was caught on the boundary at 3rd man by Oscar running to his right with the score on 37.  This brought Friend's skipper Mutiti (the league's top scorer last season) to the crease but he only lasted 5 balls before Caddick took his outside edge into first slips hands who could only parry the ball up as it flew at him but Rich Stephens came round from 2nd slip to pouch the rebound.

Oscar then got his rewards for a fine controlled spell of bowling by removing J Abraham (12) clean bowling him with a beauty which hit the top of off giving the batsman no chance. Friends were 49-3. The scoring rate was up around 4.5 an over as Ali Asghar (56) came in and decided not to trust the pitch and attack the bowlers trying to put them off their stride. He put on 31 with F George (4) before Frank got one to bounce (again!) to give Will Jameson a simple catch. At drinks Friends were 96-4 with Asghar continuing to profit from his aggressive attitude. Chris Russell (5 / 2 / 20) was introduced and got immediate rewards bowling L Varghese (12) as he jumped outside off and lost his leg stump! Steve Gibson (5 / 3 / 15) then removed B Eaton (3) with an outside edge through to Jameson. Wickets continued to fall as Chris removed G Ward (0) as he spooned the ball to square leg. Then Steve had S Ward caught at 3rd man as Field finally removed the danger man. Steve then clean bowled Spencer (0) with a Jaffa, Nicky was brought back and he clean bowled I Peruzi to end the innings on 161 a tremendous effort from Field with a lightning fast outfield giving full value for your shots.

Rich Stephens (7) opened the batting with Will Rice (41) and the pair put on 32 for the first wicket in 6 overs before Stephens was caught in the covers. Chris Russell (9) continued the steady start as he and Will put on 28 in 5 overs before Chris got a Jaffa from Peruzi to be clean bowled. Will Rice and Will Jameson (34) steadied the ship before Asghar and Peruzi blew away the Field middle order as they went from 81-3 (when Rice fell) to 126-9 as the pitch started to misbehave more and more with deliveries taking off past batsmen's ears then shooting along the ground. As Nicky Caddick (1 not out) joined Frank Straw (43 not out) at the crease Field were 35 short with 11 overs left. Frank played a magnificent innings as he scored when he could and protected his number 11. The two Field players just concentrated on 1 over at a time and this approach worked fantastically as Friends went from thinking it was all over to realising the game was slipping away from them with Frank taking advantage of some tired/nervous bowling to score 9/7/6 off the last 3 overs as he saw Field home with 1 over to spare much to the delight of his team mates on the sidelines

The character in the 2s this season is a joy to behold and the skipper put this at the top of the 5 wins out 5 they have had this season. That character was optimised by Nicky Caddick a late call up who was probably the calmest player on the pitch at the end, probably the most important 1 not out in his career at Petersfield.

Well done lads

Men of the match Frank Straw and Nicky Caddick ably supported by the 2 Wills and Steve Gibson.
Champagne moment Rich Stephens rebound catch to remove Friend's skipper Mutiti for a duck

Match report: Rowledge vs Petersfield 1s

Petersfield 1s won a tense nail biter at Rowledge 2s to win by 2 wickets in their Hampshire Cricket League County Division 2 encounter.

Winning the toss and batting first, Rowledge opener Brinsden held his team’s innings together with a well-constructed 65, capitalising on being dropped twice. Swan was the next highest scorer with 25 as Petersfield’s bowlers held the upper hand.

Wickets were shared between Dom Carson (2), Gumbe, Stanley and Damian Carson (1 apiece).

In reply to Rowledge’s 162 for 8, ‘Field lost opener Broadhurst early to one that kept low. Fellow opener Thomas (24) battled hard against a threatening attack, with Bonser in particular (0 for 14 off 10 overs) unlucky not to pick up a wicket with sustained spell of high quality seam and swing bowling.

Runs were hard to come by and wickets began to tumble. At one stage 91 for 7 and later 110 for 8, defeat looked on the cards for Petersfield until skipper Damian Carson (47*), always in control, and Gumbe came together in a superb match-winning 55-run partnership for the 8th wicket when all looked lost.

Showing great calmness when the pressure was intense, Carson and Gumbe combined grit, determination and positive shot-making in taking Petersfield home against the odds. A thrilling win and excellent game of cricket.

Man of the Match: well, men of the match, really – Damian and Keith for their match-winning heroics.

Petersfield 1s report v Bishops Waltham

Petersfield 1 st XI Vs Bishop’s Waltham, 6 th June, at BW.

Petersfield slip to their first defeat of the season in a top of the table clash against Bishop’s Waltham.

Electing to bat, Bishop’s Waltham made a rapid start thanks to impressive hitting from opener Phil Baldock who smashed a number of lusty sixes; they reached 75 off the first 10 overs. Worse followed as Baldock continued to be aggressive before holing out in the 20 th over for 103 with the score already on 143. With 25 overs remaining and 320 a distinct possibility many sides could have easily crumbled but Petersfield dug deep and fought back. The slow left arm of Keith Gumbe (10-4-34) ripped through the middle order and Bishop’s Waltham, after being so dominant, were reduced to 187-7 with 10 overs left. With the game swinging back to Petersfield it then took a fine 39 from their number 8, Sam Nedhurst to take them to 256-9.

In reply Petersfield couldn’t quite match the fireworks of Phil Baldock but nevertheless set about the chase methodically. Skipper Damian Carson (17) fell in the 10 th over to one that nipped back from Neeraz Trivedi but fellow opener Gabe Broadhurst’s (51) played some fine cuts and lofted drives to keep Field in the game before he fell to Suhaib Ahmed in the 20 th over. There after Ash Spencer (41) and Dominic Carson (67) were able to manipulate the Bishop’s Waltham attack with quick 1s and 2s and at 184-2 with 10 over remaining, Petersfield looked on course to upset a Bishop’s Waltham team containing 2 overseas players. Alas is wasn’t to be. Carson and Spencer fell to loose shots off Neeraz Trivedi in quick succession and the lower order never really fired as they tried to keep up with the run rate, Ahmed taking the remaining wickets (10-5-45). As the chase petered out, Field finished on 223-9 some 30 runs short. Petersfield will be particularly proud of their fightback with the ball earlier in the day and will no doubt bounce back on Saturday against Rowledge.

Reports from Petersfield Ladies and under 13 girls games

The U13 Girls narrowly lost to Andover today at The Heath in their hardball league match. The visitors scored 101 in their 20 overs and Petersfield fell just short scoring 93 all out. A very good performance with short numbers, the bowlers were very good and Emily Anscombe top scored with a hard hitting 34, outscoring brother Ben who only managed 33 yesterday.

The Petersfield Ladies fell just short away to Headley this afternoon. Loose shots cost the ladies dearly scoring only 59 all out however on a poor pitch they stuck to their task taking 8 wickets but Headley kept calm to win scoring 60 for 8. 3 wickets a piece for Helen Whitaker and Sophie Watson.

1s report v Bishops Waltham

First XI lost by 43 Runs chasing 256.
Petersfield showed a lot a character to peg Bishop back to 190/7 after their opener recorded a hundred off just 51 balls. Good batting from their tail on a great pitch saw them upto 256 with Keith Gumbe the pick taking four.
In reply Gabes and Dom both scored Fifties had half a shout at 180-2 but needing 8 an over. Finally closed at 223-9.
Another very good performance against a team who will be looking for promotion not only this year but next year as well.
