Petersfield 1s won a tense nail biter at Rowledge 2s to win
by 2 wickets in their Hampshire Cricket League County Division 2 encounter.
Winning the toss and batting first, Rowledge opener Brinsden
held his team’s innings together with a well-constructed 65, capitalising on
being dropped twice. Swan was the next highest scorer with 25 as Petersfield’s
bowlers held the upper hand.
Wickets were shared between Dom Carson (2), Gumbe, Stanley
and Damian Carson (1 apiece).
In reply to Rowledge’s 162 for 8, ‘Field lost opener
Broadhurst early to one that kept low. Fellow opener Thomas (24) battled hard
against a threatening attack, with Bonser in particular (0 for 14 off 10 overs)
unlucky not to pick up a wicket with sustained spell of high quality seam and
swing bowling.
Runs were hard to come by and wickets began to tumble. At
one stage 91 for 7 and later 110 for 8, defeat looked on the cards for
Petersfield until skipper Damian Carson (47*), always in control, and Gumbe
came together in a superb match-winning 55-run partnership for the 8th
wicket when all looked lost.
Showing great calmness when the pressure was intense, Carson
and Gumbe combined grit, determination and positive shot-making in taking
Petersfield home against the odds. A thrilling win and excellent game of
cricket.
