MATCH REPORT: Steep 2s vs Petersfield 2s

 

Steep and Petersfield fought out a thrilling encounter on the weekend in which fortunes swayed from one side to the other, the result in doubt until the very last ball.

 

Batting first, Steep’s total of 172 for 8 owed much to an unbeaten 92 from opener Dale, who survived several dropped chances to hold the innings together in a fine knock. Windebank (3 for 29) and Chris Wood (2 for 27) were the pick of the ‘Field bowlers.

 

In reply, the two Chris’s, Wood and Russell, rarely looked in trouble in putting on 34 for the first wicket. However a leading edge accounted for Wood and when Russell was brilliantly run out, Steep sniffed an opportunity and proceeded make inroads into the middle order, reducing Petersfield at one point to 57 for 5.

 

Steep were eyeing victory, but ‘Field weren’t out of the hunt while skipper Stephens was at the crease and successive, crucial partnerships of 36, 46 and 27 with Gumbe, Dodd and Windebank meant that 14 runs were required with 3 overs to go. This became 6 with 2 overs left and 4 needed off the last over.

 

Petersfield fancied their chances but late wickets were falling and when Davenport departed, caught behind, no. 11 McBain marched confidently (kind of) to the crease, with 2 still required and three balls to go. A block and a scrambled single meant 1 run was needed off the last ball. The tension was unbearable; it was sweaty bum time – how would this end? Sadly a miscued drive by Stephens to the last ball was caught, meaning the result, incredibly, was a tie.

 

This was cruel indeed on the skipper, who, in scoring a tremendous 72, could have done little more to – nearly – haul Petersfield to a famous win. Credit must go to the youngster Yates, who kept his head when the pressure was on and finished with his first league five-fer (5 for 39).

 

A tie in cricket is a bit like kissing your sister, but this was a tremendous game, played in great spirit by two closely matched sides, with the post mortems carried out by all the players in Doddy’s favourite pub (not), the splendid Harrow pub.

 

The 2s drop to 5^th in the league but it’s becoming increasingly tight at the top of Regional Division 2 North, with hardly anything separating the top 5 teams. It’s all to play for.

Hampshire Cricket in the Community Fundraising Events

To Club Junior Co-ordinators,

Hope your seasons are going well and all of the players you work with are enjoying being involved in cricket. We have a couple of events over the next two weeks which should wrap up the junior cricket season in style and hope that you and some of your members can attend.

I would really appreciate any support you can give to advertise an event we have taking place this Sunday in Winchester where your junior (and adult) members will have the chance to see Hampshire’s star players in six-a-side cricket action. There will be plenty of opportunities to meet the players and get autographs! These events raise funds to support the work of Hampshire Cricket in the Community including the cricket clubs Small Grants Scheme which we are planning to re-open to clubs in Hampshire next year. If you are able to forward this on to your junior members I would really appreciate it.

The Hampshire Cricket in the Community Star Sixes are taking place on Sunday 20^th July 2014 at St Cross Cricket Club. It’s a great day out for all the family and an amazing opportunity to meet Hampshire Cricket’s star players who will be competing in a six-a-side on the day. We’ll have a variety of entertainment and refreshments available throughout the event and will be putting on a special sit-down fundraising lunch for anyone who would like to entertain guests or make the day that bit more special.

‘EVE’ OF TEST DINNER – FRIDAY 25^TH JULY 2014

Less than one week later we have another amazing event target at cricket lovers across the county with our “Eve” of Test Dinner on Friday 25^th July 2014 in the company of Special Guest Speaker Phil Tufnell. You can enjoy a three-course dinner for just £67.50 (tables of 10 are available for £675) and help us raise funds to support Hampshire Cricket in the Community.

match report for 2s v Chawton

: Petersfield 2s vs Chawton

The 2s’ five-match unbeaten run came to an abrupt end at the Heath on the weekend, the side losing to league leaders Chawton by 110 runs.

Bowling first, ‘Field did well to restrict Chawton to 188 for 8. Ben Turk, with 4 for 37, was the pick of the bowlers and Rob Allerston also collected a couple of wickets. The fielding was excellent with Dave “The Panther” Squires holding onto two catches to go with his five behind the stumps on Sunday, which must be some kind of club record.

Thomas (Jnr) weighed in with a sharp stumping and a catch behind the wicket, and with two of our opponents’ batsmen having a stand-up argument using pre-watershed language at the wicket, all was looking good. Taylor top scored with 32*.

Sadly, Chawton’s opening bowlers then ripped through the ‘Field batting line-up, making the most of a wicket with increasingly uneven bounce. Allerston dug in with 22 before unfortunately being run out (we won’t talk about that) and not even Extras with 18 and a bat-breaking toe-crushing 7* from Thomas (snr) – plus a spectacular attack of cramp from Rob – could save the day.

The 2s slip one place in the table to third, still in the promotion spots, and look to return to winning ways at local rivals Steep on Saturday.

World cup final get together after Sunday XI match

This Sunday is the World Cup final. We also play DACD at the Heath on Sunday. I will be opening the bar from 6.30. Come on down and watch the end of the cricket and the World Cup final afterwards. Please email me back or reply to teamer if you plan to come down. If we get some decent numbers I'm prepared to fire up the BBQ for burgers (very reasonably priced) or else it'll be nibbles

Petersfield cricket Club Presidents day match

This is an important fundraising and club support request. Please can you contact me or Jude Squires on attendance, cakes or support. I'm asking all club members, parents, colts, senior, ladies, boys and girls please...

For the first time this year, we will be holding a President’s Match  1pm Sunday 3rd August at The Heath Cricket pitch. 

The match will be a limited overs game between two teams made up of guests of the club’s president – Nick Blakstad, representatives of the club’s sponsors, supporters and advertisers, and members of the club. The teams will be chosen to produce a fair, fun, yet competitive game. 

The match will start at 1pm, tea at about 4pm, and a BBQ will be held on conclusion of the match at about 7pm. 

As we are not having a charity day this year, this is one of the few fundraising opportunities we will have so its important that we get as many members and families to attend as possible. 

We need volunteers to bake cakes, man the BBQ, teas and coffees and clearing up. I should be able to browbeat my twins into manning the bar for much of the day but help with other tasks is essential.

Can I ask you all to get as many of your teams as possible along and can we have volunteers from each team as well please.

Petersfield 1s go top of the league

Petersfield 1st  XI match report vs Redlynch & Hale 1st XI

Petersfield 1s moved to the top of County 3 with a fine 5 wicket victory over third placed Redlynch
& Hale. Skipper Jack Hannam won the toss and inserted the hosts on a wicket that promised much
assistance to the bowlers. Shaun Blanks took the new ball and delivered early wickets bowling
opener bayford and forcing number three Webber into a false shot well caught in the covers by Will

With the home side at 31 for 2 skipper Tanner dug in for a gritty 40 as the middle order crashed
around him. Damian Carson bowling a typically tight spell (7-1-8-0) alongside former county spinner
Dave Cox who destroyed the middle order taking 3 for 36. It was the introduction of Dom Carson
that removed opener Tanner before ripping through the lower order (7-0-25-4). The tail fought to
125 but the reintroduction of blanks closed the innings in the 39th

Petersfield openers Damian Carson (27)and Gabes Broadhurst (12) set about the target putting on
38 for the first wicket , the latter caught by one that popped of a length. Will jameson added 18
aided by the aggressive running of Dom Carson (21) however the introduction of the pacy Hopkins
removed the pair with Petersfield at 93. Blanks and Barnes (25*) pushed the score up to 118 when
Blanks caught one that jumped off a length to be caught at short leg. Barnes continued his good
form sealing victory with a square cut six off of Hopkins giving Petersfield the win.

First win of season for Petersfield 3s

Petersfield CC - 3rd XI Vs Fareham & Crofton CC - 3rd XI

Result: Petersfield CC - 3rd XI - Won by 42 runs

Petersfield 3s ended a run of 6 defeats on the trot with a 42 run win against Fareham and Crofton 3s. Petersfield lost the toss and were asked to bat first on a dry if overcast day at Penns Place. With Fareham bowling some short and accurate bowling openers Ben Anscombe (19) and John Windebank (15) put on 31 runs for the first wicket as they looked to give Petersfield a solid platform to build on. This was achieved but then as Fareham’s bowlers were running out of steam John got a rising delivery which took the edge onto his thigh pad to loop to the keeper off Faizel Shahani (9 overs 1 wicket 30 runs). Ben Anscombe soon followed as young fast bowler Sam Watson (10-1-23) finally got a short delivery on target and young Ben could not get his bat out of the way to be caught by the keeper running forward. This left Petersfield on 42-2 but Rob Anscombe (16) and captain James Stratford-Tuke (19) added a further 25 runs (with a few close run outs) before Anscombe gave Connor McMain the first of his 3 wickets. Petersfield then had a mini collapse and it looked like the top 4s hard work would go to waste as they slumped from 67-2 to 81-6 with Connor McMain (7-3-21) the main man as he bowled a good line and length and got bounce from the Rugby ground end.

James was joined at the crease buy young opening bowler Oli SImpson (31 not out) and together they stopped the rot and pushed the score to 106 before James was caught in front of  his stumps by Luke Patterson (8-1-21) having made 19. The skipper came off telling number 8 batsmen Dave Squires (15 not out) to bat for 9 overs and get as many runs as possible. Oli Simpson and Squires did just that and took the score along to 137-7 as Petersfield batted their overs out for the first time this season when asked to bat first. With a slow outfield the score was very competitive and Petersfields bowlers had something to bowl at.

With the millionaire shortbread made by Sonia Anscombe going down very well with both teams Petersfield took the field to try and force the first win of the season.

Oli SImpson (5-3-10) ripped into Fareham with some quick and hostile bowling ably assisted by Dave Squires (10-0-28) as Fareham slumped to 23-3 with John Windebank taking 3 catches with the gloves making the hardest of chances look insanely easy (careful John you could find yourself behind the sticks for a long time). As Oli bowled his 5 overs (due to age restrictions) he was replaced by Ben Cox (8-3-16) who bowled some wonderful deliveries as he ripped the middle order of Fareham apart leaving them on 42-6 with only Andy McMain (20) showing any sign of resistance as he took advantage of the one bad ball per over from Squires to keep the scoreboard moving along with 3 fours and a six much to Squires’s frustration who apart from those deliveries was keeping things tight. Older Squires was replaced by his son Alex (3-1-16) and the young lad did what his father could not do and had Andy caught by Windebank who took the catch at short cover having sprinted up from behind the stumps. Fareham where now looking a bit downcast as the score moved to 59-7. Young opening bowler Sam Watson (16) came in and enjoyed some success playing some nice leg side shots before he was caught at midoff by Oli Simpson off Joe Clarke (3-2-16). His next delivery was played on by Morgan Wellington (4) and the young 13 year old had another hat-trick chance (his 2nd in two games), number 11 Faizel Shahani played the hat-trick ball out very well to deny the young lad his reward.Nick Woodruff (3-1-7) came on and bowled well in his last game before jetting off to India to learn even more about spin bowling at Delhi University. He took the final wicket as Faizel skied a cover drive to Alex Squires in the covers and he made no mistake taking the catch to seal the win for Petersfield with Fareham 42 runs short of their target

A very good team effort in the field sealed the win with great fielding, great catching and superb bowling proving the difference between the sides
