Petersfield U16s vs Waterlooville

Petersfield U16s vs Waterlooville

Petersfield lost by 61 runs

The 16s lost the match but there were plenty of positives to be drawn from this encouraging performance – chiefly the bowling and fielding, which were good throughout.

Bowling first, Petersfield did well to restrict a strong Waterlooville side to 125 off their 12 overs. Ben Turk bowled with great accuracy (17 runs off 3 overs), Gabriel Broadhurst picked up the wicket of opener Reynolds for 9 and Alex Squires was the other wicket taker, removing Knight for 7.

There were sharp catches held by Straw and Broadhurst, but the Waterlooville middle order batted steadily if not spectacularly to push the total past the 100-mark.

In reply, ‘Field lost opener Thomas early for 7, caught behind off district opening bowler Robbins, which triggered a bout of run-out mayhem, with 3 wickets falling in quick succession.  Broadhurst (25) and Straw (11) fought gallantly for the last wicket, before young Gabriel was last out to a miraculous catch on the back wall (that man Robbins again).

Shot selection and running between the wickets remain the areas to work on for this young team, who are gaining experience all the time in this frantic, fast-paced form of the game.

Great start to Indoor league season

Petersfield U16s vs Sarisbury

Petersfield win by 23 runs

The U16s got their indoor season off to a flying start with a comprehensive win over Sarisbury.

Losing the toss and asked to bat first, openers Alex Thomas (30) and Gabriel Broadhurst (47) picked up where they left off in the summer, with some well placed shots and incisive running setting the foundations for a big total.

In his first match for the U16 indoor side, Ben Turk contributed some useful runs (18) and, with the help of 35 extras, Petersfield’s total of 141 looked more than useful.
And so it proved, with Sarisbury always behind the required rate thanks to some tight bowling from Gabe Broadhurst and Ben Turk, who accounted for the dangerous opener Bradding for 14. Rob Straw was the pick of the bowlers with excellent figures of 1 for 18 off 3.

The bowlers were well backed by a solid fielding effort from all six players. As well as two run-outs, Broadhurst took a good catch and Straw hurled himself around to great effect protecting the back wall.

For the first match of the season – and with no training – this was a splendid effort by the u16s. Things to work on next time would include hitting the ball with soft hands into the gaps and watching those leg-side wides, but nothing should detract from a terrific display by a young side first time out. Well done lads!

Petersfield vs Portsmouth Priory

Petersfield win by 32 runs

The senior side then made it two out of two with an ultimately comfortable victory over the teachers of Portsmouth Priory. Petersfield's innings owed a lot to Shaun Blanks (31), skipper Will Rice (18) and, especially, a fighting 25 n.o. from Rory Newman when runs were really needed at the end, but a total of 111 looked perhaps a little light.

Maybe because of that, 'Field's attack tore into their opponents, who had no answer to Blanks (2 for 10), Charles and Rice, who each picked up a wicket. Newman finished things off in style with 2 for 10 and took an outstanding reflex catch at square leg. Austin, Rice and Charles also clung on to some sharp chances and Thomas completed a rapid stumping off Rice.

So it was Petersfield who deservedly finished top of the class with six gold stars, with Priory facing detention and a school report saying 'must try harder'....

All in all, a fantastic start to the indoor season by both Petersfield sides.

Petersfield Sunday XI v Hambeldon Sunday XI

The last day of the season is always a sad time in any cricket clubs calendar, but this turned out to be doubly sad as Petersfield lost dramatically to Hambledon on a warmer than usual day at Hambledon Cricket Club.

Petersfield's captain Marcus Sampson changed his call on the coin toss (having not lost a toss all season) and Petersfield were asked to field. With Richard Stephens (0-20 off 6 overs) and Billy Maisey (0-11 off 4) keeping a very tight strangle hold on the Hambledon openers, they forced them into 1 risky single too many when Oscar Windebank and Richard Stephens combined to run out Champman (5) to give Petersfield the breakthrough their bowling deserved. Petersfield kept it very tight for the next 15 overs or so with Mark (the grey bear) Holloway (0-20 off 5) very unlucky not to pick up Mcgrath (57) with some lovely deliveries which somehow missed the stumps. He was superbly aided in his endeavors by Oscar Windebank (3-9 off 7) who had the Hambledon upper middle order in complete disarray with a spell worthy of any game of cricket which included a double wicket maiden. Hambledon recovered and took advantage of some tired bowling from Petersfield's medium pacers before Chris Russell (3-19 off 3) gained a measure of control back in to proceedings. Hambledon ended on 191-9 after some lusty blows in the last over spoiling Chris's figures somewhat.

Petersfield's reply started well with James Stratford Tuke (4) and John Mcguire (77) putting on 48 before James got an accurate ball which bounced about 2 inches off the ground before taking middle stump out. John and number 3 Billy Maisey (21) then took the score along nicely up to drinks with John bringing up his 50 with a glorious punch through the covers for 4. At drinks John decided that he could not continue as his knee and calf were playing up and so he retired hurt. This unfortunately brought about a  the demise of Gabriel Broadhurst first ball, Richard Stephens 2nd ball, Mark Holloway 1st ball, Dave Squires 2nd Ball, Simon Dodd 1st ball and Oscar Windebank 1st ball to give 1 hatrick to S Le Clerq (5-11 off 6) and M Le Clerq (1-9 off 1.3) some remarkable bowling figures. This was a batting collapse of mighty proportions and only Billy Maisey, Chris Russell (14), Marcus Sampson (11 not out) and the returning John McGuire getting bat on ball. This collapse left Petersfield all out for 153.

Petersfield were left in a state of shock having seemingly had the game comfortably in control at around 20 overs. So the season ends on a low note but as ever the Sunday Xi was good fun with some superb banter within the team and with the opposition. It has been a difficult season with the weather but a reasonable season was had and Marcus was very happy with how things went although a few games got away from us.

The author’s man of the match (do not forget to vote on Teamer.net) was John McGuire's 77 which lit up an otherwise disappointing day. Special mention for Oscar Windebank who showed when on form he is one of the most effective bowlers at the club.

Comedy moment of the day goes to Dave Squires who bowled a ball, fell over, pitched about 5 yards in front of his sprawled body and still managed to get the ball down the other end for a dot ball (one of the few balls he managed to get straight all day)

Already looking forward to next season

Simon Dodd with his award for the best Tea's of the season before the game.

Fun Day report.

Well on a quite magnificent morning Petersfield cricket club opened its doors to the parents of the colts cricketers to show the boys and girls that their talent was inherited from their parents.

The day started off with a lot of work by the volunteers and parents to get the ground and pavilion ready for the up coming Fun day. Special thanks to Andy and Dee Salmon, Mark Friend and all the ladies who cleaned, cooked and served drinks to make the day complete.

The first game to get going was the under 7s who despite having the best part of 25 colts on the books only had 10 lads and dads. This did not diminish the competitive nature of the game as a mixed dads’ and lads’ game. A big shout went up in the first over as one son bowled a beauty to his dad which 'swung miles' according to his dad and took the outside edge. The game then took an unexpected turn as a test match attitude arrived for a 20x20 game and they finished the game a few hours later than expected. There was a winner with the team of dads and lads who batted first winning but in the end cricket was the winner for the under 7s

The under 9's game was a proper dads v lads game with big shots bring played by the dads as they batted first. This only increased the intensity of the pairs match with the dads losing in the penultimate ball of the match with mutterings that the umpire/coach was a tad biased. This was flatly denied by under 9 coach James Stratford-Tuke

The girls beat the parents for the 3 rd straight year without the help of the usual close finish. The Parents batting 1 st scored 46 for the loss 8 wickets in their 12 overs with the last pair of Anscombe’s managing to lose 5 wickets in 3 overs. In reply the girls posted an easy 80 for the loss of only 1 wicket with each pair contributing to the total. To remove any doubt the girls also won the boundary count 11 to 6 as well. Many thanks to all who took part.

The under 11 game was a 6 a side event with a lot of the under 11s having football and the paralympics stopping them from turning out. Despite a lack of numbers the 2 games played were played in great spirit with the games ending one a piece as the dads ran out of steam in the 2nd game. Some hard yards will be needed to be done over the winter by the dads if both games are not to be lost next September!

The intensity of the day was starting to build as the under 13s and under 15s combined to take on a team of dads/coaches. A couple of dads have bragging rights for the next year removing their sons. Most notably Phil Richards and under 15 coach Dave Squires both bowling the lads all ends up. The lads needed a solid start and they got it with Alex Thomas showing the form that got him the under 15 batting award with a fluent 30 not out. The lads posted a competitive 116 in their 20 overs with all the batsmen contributing during the 20 overs.

With the dads still confident, Phil Richards then had the 3rd XI captain taking note as he played some lovely shots retiring on 30 not out off 20 balls. This set up the victory for the dads with some big hitting for another of the coaches, Matt Salmon, gained revenge on young Ben Turk who had taken a liking to Matt's bowling in his well constructed 34 not out in the lads innings.

The final game of the day was between the under 17 lads v a senior select XI consisting of Saturday captains and coaches. With the under 17s batting opening with their opening bowler, it seemed the lads were not taking the game seriously. Despite losing his partner in the second over, young Nicky Caddick scored quickly before being run out attempting a quick single to Dave Squires and was well short as with only one stump to aim at, the under 15 coach proved that he could play the game as well as coach!

Despite a flurry of 3 wickets following this, including a run out of equal ability to the earlier one from the under 13 coach Paddy May. The lads introduced their over age player Matt Salmon who turned the innings completely with 40 off 13 balls showing his earlier innings for the under 15s coaches was no fluke. The lads scored 135 off their 20 overs. The seniors were still confident as they took on the task of chasing the total down. They had not counted on losing 4 wickets to run outs and some generous umpiring of wides from the umpires Richard Thomas and Dave Cox. Despite some late hitting from John McGuire and Jack Hannam, the seniors fell short by 14 runs amid cries of fowl play as Matt (over age) Salmon bowled a tight final couple of overs to cap a fine all round performance from the 19 year old.

All in all the day was yet again a success and a testament to the talent of the colts and coaching staff at the club, which compliment the 3 Saturday sides perfectly.

The previous night the Colts presentation evening was held at Petersfield Rugby Club with all the age groups represented. Special mention goes to the Under 9b team who won their SEHCA B East league and the Under 13 team who managed the same feat in the SEHCA B East League. Three young coaches Benjamin Friend, Rory Newman and Nicky Caddick also got a special mention for all their work and support to the Under 7s, under 9s, under 11s and under 13 team coaches and managers. This was emphasized by Nicky getting more than one vote in the players player of the year for the under 9s.

Again this proves that the colts in the club have talent and are also willing to give back to the younger colts. The club continues to move forward at pace.

Petersfield Sunday XI v Langstone CC

With the whole team but the captain expecting the game to be called off on a damp and overcast day both teams were plesently surprised to get a game played. Marcus Sampson won the toss again for Petersfield (I believe he has not lost a toss all season). The captain decided to bat first on a damp pitch.

With the bowlers and umpires carrying cloths (to dry the ball) the innings got off to a slow start with Jack Hannam (4) falling early to a great catch by Petersfield's Ben Friend (guesting for the Langsatone CC team), this was greeted with annoyance by Jack as he was trying to get the runs to cement his place at the top of the batting stats with only 2 games before the awards evening left. Will Rice (39) then came in and with Andy Salmon (71) put on 50 for the 2nd wicket (Will's score closing the gap on Jack) before he got a leading edge when trying to turn the ball to the legside off of Rory Newman (1-29 off 7), another Petersfield player guesting for Langstone CC. Chris Russell (30) then came in and he and Andy put on a quickfire 62 in 9 overs for the 3rd wicket putting the pressure on Langstone and their guest fielders. Before Ben Friend threw the ball in from Midoff to run out Russell on a very close decision by the newly qualified league umpire.

Petersfield were playing good cricket around Andy Salmon with Cameron Clarke (28) and Henry Austin (23) hitting some big shots to push the score beyond 200 before 3 wickets fell in quick succession leaving Petersfield on a healthy 216-9 at the end of their 40 overs.

The coverted award for the best tea of the season is going to be really close at the presentation evening (over to you skip)

Petersfield took to the field and kept a very tight reign on the scoring with the first 10 overs only going for 20 runs before Simon Dodd (1-42) had the opener plumb LBW not that the opener agreed with the umpire. Ben Friend (77) came out out to join the other opener Walmsley (25) to put on 40 for the 2nd wicket before he was run out brilliantly from wide midon, with only 1 1/2 stumps to aim at Dave Squires hitting the top off the leg stump leaving Langstone CC 59-2.

Rory Newman (33) then came out to join his young compadre Friend to push the score along to 129 with the pair hitting some lusty blows to get Langstone back into the game and up with the required rate. Will Rice (1-28) then removed Newman when he tried to cut Rice over gully. Brydon (21) then came in and supported Friend very well putting on another 40 before Brydon was clean bowled by Cameron Clarke (2-6 off 2 overs) with a beautifully disguised slower ball. Chris Russell (1-39) then got the wicket his bowling deserved before Clarke removed Ben Friend with a perfect yorker with the light going rapidly. Dave Squires (1-7) then got the final wicket before the game ended in very dark conditions with the scoreboard providing more light than the sun to complete a comfortable victory for Petersfield.

MOM for Petersfield - Andy Salmon for his well constructed 71
MOM for Langstone (sorry Petersfield) Ben Friend for a lovely 77
Magic Moment for Petersfield - Dave Squires's run out
Magic Moments for Langstone - Ben Friend's catch and Run Outs

Another good game of Sunday cricket played in the right spirit even if there were mumblings of traitor in the pavillion afterwards ;-)

Do not forget the Fun day Saturday and the final home game before the presentation night on Sunday at hom to Grayshott

Sunday Friendly (family) match Petersfield v Bedhampton 26th August 2012

After yesterdays washout for the 3 senior sides the hope was that the Heath would have dried out enough for play, our fears were allayed as we turned up on a glorious Sunday afternoon. The pitch looked a bit soft and after the toss Petersfield were to bat.

Jack Hannam (56) and Will Rice (10) started brightly despite the bowler extracting some remarkable bounce from the pitch until Will got a ball that did not bounce and almost ran down his bat before trickling onto to his off stump, Will looked back in disbelief at the bails on the floor. Cameron Clarke (31) came out to bat with Jack Hannam putting on a 66 run partnership before Jack got a delivery that like Will did not bounce at all to bowl him. Cameron departed soon after picking out the only Bedhampton fielder (Martin Hovey) who was able to hold on to a catch (keeping up Sunday friendly cricket tradition and dropping 5 catches if not 6) at deep square leg trying to hit another massive 6. Rory Newman (43) joined Harry Hannam (64) and put on 84 for the 5th wicket scoring numerous 4's at around 10 an over to setup some late innings cameos from Dave Squires (11 not out) and Simon Dodd (6). Bedhampton then bought on their star turn young Joe Hovey (2-4 off 1 over) who bowled straight and fooled the batsmen into a couple of false shots, not bad for a 9 year old who made his wicket keeper father’s day getting first team fast bowler Nicky Caddick out with his first ball. Petersfield finished on 240-9.

After a very nice tea (another Sunday tradition) Petersfield took to the field with Dave Squires (1-31) opening the bowling and removing the dangerous wicketkeeper batsmen (Chris Hovey) with his first ball. This bought the keeper’s other son to the wicket (talented family the Hoveys) Harry Hovey (53) putting on 59 with C Smith(19) before Alex Squires (3-33) removed Smith with his dangerous dipping in swinger that causes the batsmen so many problems. Young Joe Hovey (1) came out and did very well against some demon spin bowling from Rice (0-28) and Mark Holloway (1-33) before he parted to a lofted shot to young Caddick, who along with Mark Holloway got revenge (if you can call it that against a 9 year old!) for their earlier dismissals. Martin Hovey (27) then came out and put on 40 with Harry Hovey before he was caught on on the boundary at deep cover by Cameron Clarke (strange symmetry in this game) in an almost identical dismissal to Clarke's earlier in the day. Alex Squires then removed young Hampshire batsman Harry Hovey, he followed this up with the wicket of Quade(4) in his last over to continue his good end of season run in the Sunday team with another 3 wickets pushing Mark Holloway all way for the best bowler award. Some late innings hitting from Mcintyre (45 Not out) and Welland (19) before the former was brilliantly taken by the keeper (Salmon) with a diving catch to his right off Simon Dodd (2-24) following on from his fish like performance for the 2s the previous week. Rory Newman (1-14 off 3 overs) then came off and bowled Welland with an in swinging yorker to finish the game off leaving Bedhampton 39 runs short of their target. This finished off a good game of cricket played in a very friendly atmosphere with a large amount of followers from Bedhampton (not something you see very often).

Man of the match - Harry Hannam and Jack Hannam setting up the victory and keeping it in the family (the theme of the day)
Champagne Moment - young Joe Hovey's first wicket and his dad throwing him into the air in celebration.

Petersfield Second XI vs Ashford Hill

Petersfield Second XI vs Ashford Hill

Petersfield won by 36 runs

With only 7 players available on the Friday evening, things weren't looking too hopeful for the second XI's visit to Ashford Hill last weekend. But some frantic phone calls and last minute recruitment of the unsuspecting meant that a motley collection of youngsters, Sunday and third team players, dads and a light sprinkling of second team regulars made the long trip to Newbury with the aim of having some fun. It turned out so much better than that.

On a searingly hot day, Petersfield batted first and got off to a great start, father-and-son combination Clive and Henry Shore putting on 63 for the first wicket, making the most of some dropped catches, with Henry (67) in particular hitting some scorching shots to match the weather.

This set a great foundation for Ollie Shapley, straight off a plane, to play his shots in a lively knock of 36. Stand-in skipper Shaun Blanks held the middle order together with a disciplined 25, before some big hitting from Charles (20) in a frenetic 8th wicket partnership with Thomas took 'Field's total to a competitive 196. Game on!

With the wicket very two-paced, Blanks decided pace off the ball was the answer and opened with The Two Bears: Mark 'Grey Bear' Holloway and Liam 'Brown Bear' Charles. The bold decision paid off handsomely, both bowlers combining brilliantly to rip the heart out of the Ashford Hill top order. Holloway, with 3 for 39 (an athletic caught & bowled will live long in the memory!) and Charles, 3 for 36, bowled unchanged for 20 overs and were a real threat throughout - an outstanding performance.

Josh Phipps and Rory Newman continued to apply the pressure, the latter picking up a well deserved wicket. Ashford Hill were always behind the rate and, with wickets falling at vital times, were never allowed to build a substantial partnership. The fielding was sharp, with Phipps and Henry Shore taking crucial catches, Shore's a brilliant effort close in.

Matt Salmon, leaping around behind the stumps like a, er, salmon, also pouched a couple, using his body to good effect as he was blinded by the sun, which was directly behind the bowler's arm. This also caused plenty of difficulties for the batsmen, and no little controversy, either. Unsighted, they took a few blows to the hands from the occasional (accidental, honest) low full toss. Words were exchanged....

The last thing Field's opponents expected or wanted then was to see Blanks steaming in as third change. They had no answer as the captain finished off the lower-middle order (2 for 11 off 6). Despite some hitting out at the end, the damage had been done: Ashford Hill all out for 160.

This was a wonderful effort from a scratch Petersfield outfit who, nonetheless, thoroughly deserved the win, played some great cricket, and above all showed terrific team spirit. Everyone contributed, whether it was Phil 'the Panther' Newman patrolling the fine leg boundary or Richard 'the Antelope' Thomas right under the batsman's nose at silly mid off... Ashford Hill simply didn't know what hit them.

The whole extraordinary match was probably best summed up by Liam Charles' magnificent running catch in the deep to seal the victory, Charles then charging off around the outfield in full Alan Shearer celebration mode, hotly pursued by the entire Petersfield team (well, those still able to move).

A famous victory.

"As you know this season has been very adversely affected by the ghastly weather earlier in the year and with some difficulties in weekly team selection our administration has been severely tested. However one subject that shouldn't have got overlooked is the payment of senior subscriptions especially as non payers should not strictly be considered for team selection.
There are a few of you that still have not paid and I MUST ask you to pay by next weekend as failure to do so may affect our league standing and our insurance cover.
You can give cash or a cheque ( £35 ) to your captain or send it to Tim Boulton our Treasurer at 78 The Causeway, Petersfield, GU31 4JS.
This is important so please don't let me down on this as no one has the time to keep chasing. Thanks in advance !

August Newsletter

Hello again

After a break of a few weeks where hardly any cricket has been played by senior or colts teams we finally have something to report.

This round up starts with Paddy May's Under 13 team beating Liss U13s by 8 wickets with 14 overs to spare ! A great all round team performance with the highlight being Ben Anscombe's 30 not out.

This was followed the same week with the Petersfield Girls XI beating the Pink Maidens in their last game of the season. Chris Russell's (the coach) comments below sum up his feeling on the game

“Congratulations should go to the entire team who played with spirit and focus, this result takes the girls to a new level of which they should be very proud. “

http://petersfieldcc.blogspot.com/2012/07/petersfield-girls-v-pink-maidens.html

The Under 15 lads also had a couple of games squeezed in at the end of the season with a win and a draw from the 2 games against Portsmouth Community and Waterlooville. Both games were played in a fantastic spirit and all the lads who played showed there is talent in the under 15 section of the colts. The manager and coach would like to thanks all the lads who have played for the team this season and despite our reservations performed to the highest standards against teams who are on the whole a lot older and more experienced.

http://petersfieldcc.blogspot.com/2012/07/under-15s-v-portsmouth-community-club.html

http://petersfieldcc.blogspot.com/2012/08/petersfield-u15s-vs-waterlooville.html

Despite the weather many of the colts’ teams are having a sneaky bit of success. U9Bs and U13s top their table and U11Bs are 2nd. If the U9Bs manage to get another game in they will have completed all their fixtures and have currently won 8 – an excellent performance from coach, volunteers and team!!

For those of you who don’t know, Gabriel Broadhurst (12) has been asked to attend an England Development Session at Loughborough University. He will have to go through a number of tests including hitting targets from a bowling machine using a thin bat. I am sure everyone wishes him luck.

With the colts fun day fast approaching (Saturday 8 th September) the coaches, managers and parents of the players are dusting off their old pads and bats ready to show the youngsters how it is done.

Please also do not forget the Colts Presentation night that same week Friday 7 th September at Petersfield Rugby club 18:30 for a 19:00 start

Onto the senior teams with July being a complete wash out for the 2s and 3s the 1s played a couple of games winning 1 and losing 1.

On Saturday the 1s took on Rotherwick CC completing a comfortable 195 run victory highlights of the match were Billy Maisey's maiden hundred in the league scoring 14 fours and 5 sixes. He was ably supported by Frank Straw (47). The bowlers then took over with Caddick, Nigel Straw and Jameson all taking wickets with the highlight being Caddick (5-23) bowling 2 of the openers and Nigel Straw bowling a double wicket maiden. Special mention also for Nigel Stone for bowling a miserly 10 overs for 11 runs including 5 maidens.

The 2s again fell foul of the weather with the Heath being unplayable all weekend again because of the weather.

The 3s made the long trip to play Basingstoke and NH 5s at Sherford on Lodden where they came up against the best bowling attack captain James Stratford-Tuke had faced all season. The 3s fell 100 or so runs short of the 226 needed for victory thanks to a very good hundred by Basingstoke opener J Ahuyi.

The highlights of the day (apart from Jess Ennis, Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah winning gold) was the first senior wicket for Oliver Simpsom (13) on debut. He also got his first runs with a sweetly timed 4 through the covers impressing his captain so much some of the older players are looking nervously over their shoulders for the rest of the season.

The Sunday team came up against old rivals DACD and recorded a good victory at Penn's on Sunday beating the Biblical downpour on Sunday morning to get the game on. Captain Marcus Sampson was very pleased with the hard fought victory in a game played in a very good spirit. Highlights of the day were

Young Alex Squires for his 3-9 which changed the game in Petersfield's favour and a magic moment was Alex Thomas being hit for a massive six (hmm and OK his first wicket).

Petersfield Sunday v DACD 5th August 2012

Petersfield Sunday v DACD

After what can only be described as a biblical downpour on Sunday morning, Petersfield Sunday XI turned up at Penn's place expecting a very wet pitch and outfield. This was not the case and despite what looked like a pitch conducive to batting the DACD captain inserted Petersfield much to Marcus Sampson's delight as we wanted to bat anyway was the response to the gathered media ;-)

Jack Hanam (62) opened the batting with Alex Thomas (2) and the innings started off brightly with Jack hitting some big 4s and 6s off the opening bowlers before Thomas mistimed a slower ball back to the bowler Mike Wyatt (2-20 off 8). This bough Ben Friend to the wicket who followed his 36 on Saturday with a fluent 63, with some lovely sweep shots including a massive 6 (2 in two days for young Ben). Before falling to the “commentators curse” as discussions in the pavilion revolved around whether he had ever scored a senior hundred. The scoring rate was high throughout the innings thanks to Matt Salmons nice 36, Rory Newmans fluent 25 not out and a cameo of an innings from Dave Squires (15 not out) leaving Field with a good total of 220.

After a good tea the DACD openers came out with all guns blazing taking advantage of wayward bowling from Dave Squires (0-20 off 3) and Nicky Caddick (0-12 off 3 with a maiden!), must be something about opening the bowling from the other end to Squires as the usually reliable Caddick bowling some very uncharacteristic wide delivery's. Jack Hanam (2-18 off 8) helped to keep the DACD openers under some sort of control but as drinks were taken they were up with the rate on 106. This prompted some discussion between Jack and Marcus on field placings with Jack asking for a fly slip to be posted in his first over after drinks. Despite his opening partner warning him about the dangers just after drinks Tim Barton (56) took a swipe at a rising delivery and was caught at fly slip by Simon Dodd. At this point field started to squeeze the DACD batting with some tight bowling but Meredydd Hughes (64) continued to score off anything loose keeping the run rate needed to overhaul Petersfield at about 7 an over.

Marcus Sampson then bought on young Alex Squires (3-9 off 4 overs) to compliment the always economical Mark Holloway (1-19 off 8), could have had more but for a couple of dropped catches .

In his first over he had the very dangerous Meredydd caught at gully. He then proceeded to remove 'Danger Man' Mike Wyatt with his now trademark in swinging/dipping nasty delivery which has lots of batsmen in trouble. With the help of his father at Mid-on he picked up his 3rd wicket and was unlucky not to get more with a speel of bowling which impressed his captain and the opposition to leave him with weekend figures of 6-27 off 8 overs, very good from the young 14 year old (even if he outshone his dad). Then came the moment that most of the team were dreading as wicket keeper Alex Thomas was allowed to bowl the last over with over 40 needed. To describe Alex's bowling as spin could lead me to being sued under the trade descriptions act and this was true as James Miller planted his 2nd delivery over deep mid wicket for a massive six that had the rabbits running for cover 20 yards from the boundary edge. Undaunted by this Thomas then proceeded to get one to miss that bat and Matt Salmon (who kept very well to say he has not been keeping at all this summer) whipped the bails off to leave Miller stranded and young Thomas dancing a jig of delight around the pitch to pick up his first senior wicket and last as his dad said he was retiring from bowling with that one over. The discussion on the way back to the pavillion revolved around the umpire just wanting the game over and to get to the pub prompting the dubious stumping decision with the batsmen and half the Petersfield players saying 'he was in by miles'

All in all a fantastic game of cricket with over 400 runs scored played in bright sunshine in a great spirit which at the end of the day is what it is all about. Well done to Petersfield, well played DACD .
MOM – Alex Squires for his 3-9 which changed the game in Petersfield favour
Magic Moment – Alex Thomas being hit for a six (hmm ok his first wicket)
Best Fielding – The fact that Dave Squires finally held a catch off his son's bowling to leave scorer Judith Squires having to fill out the book with Caught D Squires Bowled A Squires

Basingstoke and NH v Petersfield 3s

Petersfield travelled to a few miles north of Basingstoke to take on Basingstoke and North hants 5th xi. Having left Petersfield with the rain falling the team were not confident of getting a full game in but in the end there was 1 shower but not interruption to play. On a very dark and grass covered pitch James Stratford-Tuke won the toss and inserted the opposition.

The opening bowlers did not bowl well and despite picking up 1 of the openers cheaply gave the Basingstoke players too many hittable balls which they took full advantage of. The scoring rate was slowed with some very nice legspin from Tristan O'Brien (3-52) and Josh Phipps (3-68) restricting all the other batsmen to low scores. The stand out innings was from J Ahuyi with a fine 106 ( although was dropped having made only 20) before being run out pushing for a 2 off a misfield at deep cover.

Enter youngsters Rob Straw (15) and Oliver Simpson (13) who picked up a wicket a piece to clean up the tail, Oliver Simpson picking up his first senior wicket on his debut. The Basingstoke team scored a total of 225.

Petersfield started well but had trouble getting the boundaries they needed to keep up with the required rate,  against some fine opening bowlers and some long grass in the outfield. The need to push the scoring on led to Stratford-Tuke (10) being run out in similar fashion to the Basingstoke opener. Eoin Seager (14) and Ben Friend (35) batted very well against a leg spinner who was getting the ball to turn 2ft most balls. Gabriel Broadhurst (12 years old) made it a hatrick of good performances with a well constructed 9 before being caught in the chest which seemed to knock his concentration. After a small cameo from Simpson (4 not out) and O'Brien (1 not out) saw out the overs but Petersfield fell 116 short of there total.

All in all it was a promising performance for the future with some young players doing well in difficult circumstances, it could have been very different with a bit of luck. Above all the highlight was the disciplined application when the game could have run a away from us during the Basingstoke innings, it was a great effort to get them all out and ultimately we were beaten by a very good side with a bowling attack that would grace sides in higher leagues than ours.

Petersfield CC vs Rotherwick CC Match Report 04.08.2012 played at Rotherwick

Petersfield travelled to Rotherwick in need of a victory to keep successive promotion hopes alive. Possessing a strong batting line up Field opted to bat on a flat Rotherwick track with a view to post a big total. Openers Rice and Maisey started well putting on 40 runs inside the forst seix overs before Rice (11) fell attempting a hook off a short delivery.

Maisey brought up his half century supported well by young Alex Thomas who showed great patience and concentration in his innings alongside the free-scoring opener. At the halfway stage Petersfield were set at 112 for 2 down with the hard hitting middle order to follow. Frank Straw, promoted up the order took the aerial route and made the opposition pay for two dropped catches with a quick fire 47.

Maisey completed his maiden league century before falling in the 31st over with an innings which consisted of 14 fours and 5 sixes. Chris Russell (53) and Harry Hannam (21) continued the onslaught with 4 more wickets falling in an attempt to take the game away from the home side.

Rotherwick took to the pitch needing 287 runs for victory against deep Petersfield bowling attack. The miserly Nigel Stone (10-5-11-0) gave nothing away once again allowing Nicky Caddick to bowl a hostile spell from the other end. Caddick bowled two of the top three batsmen leaving the home side on 28 for 2. Nigel Straw continued the good work picking up a double wicket maiden in his 6th over leaving Rotherwick at 63 for 4 down.

The returning Will Jameson (6.1-0-29-2) recovered well after an expensive start forcing a run out with some tight spin bowling. The re-introduction of Caddick blew away the lower order with the opening bowler returning superb figures of 5 for 23 from his 9 overs. Rotherwick were all out for 95 runs giving the visitors a convincing 189 run victory.

Petersfield U15s vs Waterlooville

Petersfield U15s vs Waterlooville Petersfield lost by 14 runs Petersfield U15s may have narrowly lost against a strong Waterlooville side but put in their best all-round performance of the season. Winning the toss and inserting Waterlooville, the U15s did well to restrict their opponents to 128 all out thanks to clever bowling, well-set fields and solid catching. District player Harry Robbins blasted a powerful 43 including three sixes but the next highest score was just 15, so this was a terrific effort. Alex Squires led the way with 3 for 18, well supported by Rob Straw, Tom Pocock and Ollie Simpson with two wickets apiece, the latter accounting for danger-man Robbins, caught behind by Thomas off a skier. The opposition umpire, who is Waterlooville’s overseas player, said it was the best fielding performance he had seen all season. Anscombe, Egelstaff, Grange and Simpson all took catches, with Thomas picking up his customary stumping. In reply, openers Alex Thomas and Gabriel Broadhurst put on 59 for the first wicket and were up with the required run rate at the half-way stage. But when Thomas fell LBW for 30, this triggered a mini-collapse when 4 wickets fell in 4 overs for just 7 runs, which seemed to have put the game out of reach. Enter Ben Turk. In a superb knock of 36 not out in not-very-many balls, superbly supported by Broadhurst (32 not out), the young U13 players nearly took ’Field all the way to a famous victory – but fell agonisingly short. This was a heroic effort by the lads with a number of notable season highs. Our innings featured the three highest individual scores of the season and our total of 115 beat the previous best by 15 runs. ’Field actually scored more runs off the bat than Waterlooville. In the final analysis, it was the 34 extras including 22 wides that was the difference between the two sides. But this shouldn’t detract from what was a fantastic effort by the U15s and a very enjoyable match to watch. If this turns out to be the last game of the year, Petersfield have finished the season on a real high.

Petersfield Girls v Pink Maidens

Petersfield Girls v Pink Maidens 29th July 2012 The final game of the season came courtesy of the Pink Maidens who kindly gave up their free league weekend to play the Petersfield girls side in a 20/20 match at Elsted on Sunday. The maidens batted first and both Olivia Wadey and Jess Grange showed some great determination as they opened the bowling for Petersfield and restricted the Maidens to 7 for 1 from their 1st 5 overs. A good spell of pace bowling from Katie Nolan supported by the accuracy of Laura Bates and some excellent wicket keeping by Lorna Williams kept the pressure on the Maidens who were 30 for 2 from 11 overs. Some free hitting and loose bowling then saw the score accelerate until Emma Barrett regained some control and the opening bowlers returned to take wickets leaving the Maidens a little short in scoring 77 for 4 from their 20 overs. Petersfield once again opened with Williams and Wadey who faced some of the quicker bowling of their short careers with bravery and application. The early loss of Wadey did not disrupt Petersfield’ s reply as some good shot selection and quick running moved them to 28 for 2 from the 1st 4 overs. The loss of Jess Grange for 10 and Lorna Williams for an excellent 12 could have proved problematic however some disciplined batting from Emma Barrett and big hitting from Katie Nolan who made 7 and 11 respectively kept the scoreboard moving. The returning opening bowlers for the Maidens threatened to take the game away from Petersfield however some brave batting from the younger and less experienced members of the team kept Petersfield in charge and needing 12 from the last 3 overs Tash Wadey and Ella Williams secured the match for Petersfield with 8 balls to spare. Congratulations should go to the entire team who played with spirit and focus, this result takes the girls to a new level of which they should be very proud.

Under 15s v Portsmouth Community Club

Petersfield U15s gained revenge for the narrow away loss to Portsmouth Community with a hard-fought yet ultimately comfortable win at Penns Place on Monday. Winning the toss and inserting Community, opening bowlers Alex Squires and Rob Straw tore into the batting, Squires in particular bowling superbly to take 2 for 6 off 4 overs and was unlucky not to pick up at least a couple more. Tom Pocock then chipped in with 3 for 8 including two wickets in two balls. Gabriel Broadhurst and Ben Anscombe provided excellent support with a wicket each. The bowling was tight (apart from the wides!) and the fielding electric, with Broadhurst (3 catches) and Bird (2 catches) outstanding. Jack Harvey and Will Grange also contributed to two sharp run-outs. ’Field were all over Community like a rash. Always under pressure, they struggled to 64 all out. Any notion that this was going to be a straightforward run chase were soon dispelled when Petersfield started their reply. The pitch was extremely low and slow with some variable bounce, while the bowling was miserly in the extreme. Nevertheless openers Alex Thomas and Gabe Broadhurst laid a solid foundation with a partnership of 28 off 8 overs, running well between the wickets, defending the good balls and punishing anything loose, before Broadhurst was bowled by Turner for 10. Josh Bird then relieved some of the pressure with a sprightly 15 including one of the biggest sixes seen at Penns for a long time. Despite a run-out mix-up at the death, Thomas saw ‘Field home with a captain’s knock of 28 not out. This was an excellent all-round performance by the u15s, who played some fine cricket and should be thoroughly proud of their performance against stubborn opponents and an opposition coach who put the grUMP into UMPire. Well done lads!

Petersfield CC vs Midhurst II CC Match Report 30.06.2012 played at Midhurst

Petersfield CC vs Midhurst II CC Match Report 30.06.2012 played at Midhurst Petersfield travelled to local rivals Midhurst hoping to bounce back from last weeks defeat to Basingstoke at the Heath. Things started badly for the visitors losing Billy Maisey in the 4th over to a late swinging Kearney Yorker. Three more wickets fell in quick succession leaving Petersfield at 35 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Henry Austin and Nigel Stone followed soon after leaving Petersfield looking dead and buried at 53 for 9. This brought Nigel Straw together with Will Jameson who took the attack to the Midhurst bowlers crashing the ball to all parts of the ground. Despite a blow to the face resulting in a 10 minute break from play Jameson brought up his half century ably supported by Nigel Straw (19). Straw was caught shortly after to a diving catch in the slips bringing the heroic 10th wicket display to an end. The partnership of 85 left Midhurst with 138 to chase and gave Petersfield something of a total to defend. The home side set about pushing along at a steady rate to see off the opening attack of Nicky Caddick and Stone. At 30 for 1 down from 10 overs they were on the track to victory before Caddick picked up his second wicket trapping Gough LBW for 6. Stone was rewarded soon after with his nagging line and length picking up the wicket of Pearce to a good catch from Ash Spencer. It was the introduction of Maisey which proved decisive; intent on making up for his failings with the bat, tore the home batting line up apart with an aggressive spell of swing bowling. Maisey finished with superb figures of 5 wickets for just 8 runs conceded from his 6 overs and an invaluable victory away from home.

Succesful Senior weekend

Petersfield as a club this weekend took on Midhurst in a Hmapshire v West Sussex shoot out with Petersfield 1s taking on Midhurst 2s, 2s tataking on Midhurst 3s and 3s taking on Misdhurst 4's. Petersfield emerged from this weekend with all 3 sides having comprehensive victories. The 1s struggled on a particularly sticky wicket to reach an unenviable 49 - 9, which brought in Petersfield's answer to Ian Botham, Will Jameson. Will struck 56 in a last wicket partnership of 80 with Captain Nigel Straw to give Filed a glimmer of a chance. This was taken full advantage of, on a wicket which has yielded very few runs all season, and Midhurst were all out for under 60 ,Billy Maisey taking 5 for 8 and was almost unplayable. Midhurst scored 55, only 35 of which were scored off the bat. Puts Petersfield batting (138) into context! Petersfield 2s vs Midhurst 3s at the Heath Petersfield won by 109 runs Petersfield 2s welcomed visitors Midhurst to the Heath on Saturday and recorded their third win of the season by a comfortable 109 runs. Put into bat by Midhurst on a slow but even paced wicket, ‘Field’s openers Thomas (24) and Salmon (29) started steadily against some tight bowling before both falling to Tupper. The middle order consolidated a tricky position before accelerating away with some aggressive stroke play, with Blanks (34) and Maguire (42) to the fore. But leading the charge was 16-year-old Henry Shore, who top scored with 63, which included eight boundaries and a six. Petersfield finished on 232 for 7 off their 42 overs. Sharp, with 3 for 52, was the pick of the Midhurst attack. An inexperienced Midhurst batting line-up struggled in reply but featured a stand-out performance from Tupper, who blasted a quick-fire 60 that featured 9 fours and two soaring sixes in a marvellous display of power hitting that saw the ball despatched to all parts of the Heath. However the real damage was done by Blanks (4 for 36) and Gumbe (2 for 7 off only 7 overs), limiting Midhurst to 123 all out and resulting in a comprehensive victory for Petersfield. Match Report: Petersfield III v Midhurst IV, Saturday 30th June ‘12 Petersfield lost the toss and the Midhurst captain took little time to decide to put Petersfield into bat on what looked to be a green and interesting wicket on a sunny but blustery day. Petersfield looked to be struggling to get on top of the Midhurst openers Sprinks and Jackson, losing early wickets in the 3rd and 8th overs to get to 29 for 2. Midhurst’s confidence took a blow when a difficult catch from Petersfield opener Richard Stephens was dropped on the boundary. This proved to be a defining moment in the match as Stephens and Gabriel Broadhust (12 years of age) dug in. Fourteen fours and five sixes from Stephens were interspersed with an occasional single to take Stephens to a resounding century, superbly supported by Broadhurst with a demonstration of concentration. Stephens eventually retired injured on an individual total of 104. Midhurst’s bowlers plugged on until eventually achieving a breakthrough in the 35th over in which Paddy May was caught off of Hamilton-Fox for a solid 18. This was swiftly followed in the same over by an unfortunate run out of Broadhurst on 40, with the batsmen’s calls being lost in the wind. Father and son pair John and Oscar Windebank then held the wicket until the end of the innings, with Windebank J ending on 20 not out, and Windebank O managing not to break a borrowed bat in his rapid 25 not out including two big sixes. After the break Midhurst got off to a quiet start and then lost an early wicket to Ben Cox, leaving them at 4 for 1 in the fourth over. Cox grabbed a second wicket in the sixth over and then Tristan O’Brien came on to take the wicket of Midhurst opener Powell with his first ball, Powell reaching 18. Midhurst’s fortunes were then not helped by a short but increasingly lively spell from Matt Salmon, opening his cameo appearance with a wicket maiden and ending on 2 wickets for 1 run off of 3 overs. The Midhurst tail wagged a little with Nucstew eventually caught for 12 and Fox caught for 10, both off a fine spell of accurate bowling from Petersfield’s Sam Howe, who closed on 3 for 11 off of 5 overs. The ‘field pushed on to close off a very good spirited match with 16 overs to spare, with the match clearly turning on the performance of batting pair Richards and Broadhurst.
