Petersfield U13s continue great start to the season for the club

Petersfield Under 13s v Portsmouth & Southsea u13s

Petersfield CC - Under 13 - Won by 7 runs
Venue - The Heath, Petersfield

Petersfield got their season off to a winning start in a very close and well contested game on Sunday 18th May. Captain Joe Clarke won the toss and decided to bat first in the hope that the outfield would dry out in the morning sun.

Portsmouth made an early breakthrough when opener Tommy Matthews misjudged a straight ball and was bowled off Harlan Randall (2 overs, 1 wicket for 15 runs). Joe Clarke (20) and Will Milner-Smith (22) promoted up the order after his heroics last season with the bat justified their coach’s faith and took the score along to 40 before both were out in quick succession

Cameron Porteous, Adam Childs and Matthew Burrage all went cheaply but with the ball moving around and a number of wides being bowled the score kept ticking over despite a middle order collapse. Max Saint (12 not Out) and Thomas Stevens took the total to 87 at the end of the 20 overs, running aggressively between the wickets and taking all the singles they could as Portsmouth kept things very tight

The total gave Petersfield something to bowl at but it would take some great fielding and bowling to restrict Portsmouth and Southsea to less than 87.

As in the Petersfield innings there was an early breakthrough as Will Milner-Smith (4-1-14)  removed opener Harry Davis Marks (0) with an inswinging delivery. Harvey Baker (3-1-17) removed Harlan Randall (6). Max Saint (3-1-5) bowling very well and removed Daniel Turner (0) to leave Portsmouth on 30-4. Portsmouth then mounted a tremendous fightback with Captain Oliver Kanavan (30 retired not out) and Will Donsworth (19)
With Oliver Kanavan retiring and then Will Donsworth being superbly caught in the covers by Will Milner-Smith off Joe Clarke (4-1-5), Portmouth needed 18 off the last 2 overs to clinch victory,

Portsmouth started to take more and more risks as the pressure exerted by the superb fielding of Petersfield started to take its toll. The next four wickets fell to runouts as Portsmouth melted in the midday heat with Adam Childs, Ben Kay and Harvey Baker showing that the fielding drills during the training sessions paid off. With some overthrows in between the run outs Portsmouth needed 8 off the last over and with both sets of parents starting to have heart flutters Captain Joe Clarke came on to bowl a maiden in the last over to leave Portsmouth 7 runs short of their target.

A very close game that ebbed and flowed from one side to the other was played in the right spirit and provided superb entertainment for those watching

Petersfield man of the match - Will Milner Smith for a fantastic all round performance
special mention to all the players for their fielding which at times was exceptional
Moment of the day - Will Milner-Smith’s catch in the covers to remove Donsworth.

Petersfield CC - 3rd XI Vs Burridge CC - 3rd XI

Petersfield CC - 3rd XI Vs Burridge CC - 3rd XI

Burridge CC - 3rd XI - Won by 48 runs
Saturday 17th June Venue Penn’s place
Hampshire Cricket League Regional Division 3 SE

Petersfield 3s started their season a week late due to the bad weather last week but came up against a very strong Burridge side on a glorious day for cricket at Penn’s Place.

Stand-in captain John Windebank won the toss and listened to his bowlers as he chose to field first on a green but dry pitch despite the humid conditions

The 3s got off to a good start with Olli Simpson (8 overs 1 wicket for 27)  picking up the first wicket of the season when he had Rob Stroud (0) caught at square leg off a high full toss leaving Burridge on 6 for 1. Simpson and his opening bowler partner Dave Squires (8-1-23) kept things very tight and when the 2nd wicket fell to Alex Squires (8-3-47) Burridge were on 32. Young Squires then picked up his 2nd wicket when a dipping delivery bamboozled Clive Slaughter (4) and took out his leg stump (39-3). Sullivan White (31) joined opener Simon Bevis (72 not out) and they pushed the score along to 91 before White dragged on a good delivery from Dan May (5-1-12). Although wickets were falling at regular intervals Simon Bevis was making hay at the other end and the scoring rate continued at around 5 an over for the last 30 overs to leave Burridge on 164-6 off their 42 overs.

The total looked very reachable with the wicket playing very well for the first game of the season    with good bounce and carry. Credit to groundsman Toby Austin for producing such a good wicket with all the rain around the last few weeks.

The 3s openers John Windebank (3) and Ben Anscombe (1) faced the same issues as Burridges openers with the ball moving off the pitch and in the air. When captain Windebank fell for 3 the total was on 21 with Rob Anscombe (0) being trapped LBW by David Barron (10-2-27) earlier to join his son in the hutch. Omar Iqbal (25) then joined Paul Clarke (38 not out) and they rebuilt the Petersfield innings taking the score to 64 with Iqbal scoring some powerful leg side runs especially off young spinner Sam Houlton (8-2-40). Paul Clarke was playing the same sort of innings as Simon Bevis for Petersfield as wickets fell around him with David Longland (1), Josh Collins (8) and Oli Simpson (6). Dave Squires (10) came in at number 9 and stayed with Clarke for 5 or 6 overs but with the run rate continuing to climb the pressure got to Squires as he tried to hit out he lost his leg stump to returning opening bowler J Slaughter (7.2-2-8) to leave Petersfield floundering on 112-8. Dan May (0) and Alex Squires (1) could not stay with Clarke and despite his valiant and impressive innings Petersfield fell 48 runs short.

Burridge were a strong side but Petersfield proved again that they can compete at the higher level after promotion last season. Credit must go to Burridge who looked a good bowling side

Petersfield Man Of the Match - Paul Clarke for his valiant efforts with the bat after injuring his back in the field
Comedy Moment - David Longland nearly knocking himself out fielding a non-existent ball at mid-wicket

Under 9b's start win

Petersfield won by 7 runs with the totals being

Portmouth (batted first) - 262 for 9
Petersfield  - 269 for 5

It was a wonderfully sunny game on the sea front at Southsea and proved to be a very open and evenly matched game - the first of the season for both teams.

The bowling was generally good (especially considering it was the first time for most) and the batting was at times superb. Petersfield bowled consistently and took wickets at a steady rate with nearly all our bowlers taking at least one wicket. The fielding was steady, with the only down side being a few over-throws due to fielders not backing up the bowler or wicket keeper, however there were also a number of really good diving saves near the boundary and some great throws in with 3 run outs achieved by great team work.

when it came time to bat, the boys did us proud. They scored steadily and there were some flashes of genius - the sweep shot seems to be our collective favourite with 3 fours coming off this shot to virtually the same spot on the boundary.

Portsmouth made us feel very welcome and the game was played in exactly the right way with both teams supporting and encouraging their own players as well as recognising good play from the other team.

Petersfield team was made up of: Ben Hegan, Rory Crispin, Tom Dillon, Joshua Matyear, Ben Moller, Jasper Shine, Alex Hulme and Freddie Bell (c).

Petersfield 2s start with a win

Alex Thomas sees Petersfield II home to win first league game

Petersfield II started the league season in fine style with a comprehensive win

against Rowledge III on the Heath. It was a very encouraging start to the season

with every player contributing, although man-of-the-match honours go to Alex

Thomas for steering the side to victory with an unbeaten 69.

New captain, Richard Stephens won the toss and put Rowledge in to bat on a

wicket still soft after all the recent rain. Great credit must go to Andy Salmon and

his groundsmen for not only making the Heath look a picture, but also producing a

consistent track and smooth outfield which had been partly submerged earlier in the

week.

The Rowledge openers started confidently against Ed Davenport and Keith Gumbe

but Smith began to show his liking for short pitched deliveries despatching a number

of boundaries. Gumbe though bowled with great accuracy, only conceding 22

runs in his first 8 overs and claimed the first wicket of Silver. Ben Cox replaced

Davenport and although he bowled a good length, was punished with anything off-
line. By the half-way point of their innings, Rowledge were 89-1 and heading for a

200 plus total. The introduction of spinners, Chris Russell and Chris Wood changed

the complexion of the game with only 21 runs coming in the next 10 overs for the

loss of 4 wickets. Wood claimed the wicket of Smith smartly caught by Thomas and

then Openshaw, off a skier very well held by Cox, running backwards. Russell also

picked up 2 wickets in his 10 overs.

Each of the remaining Rowledge batsmen were contained by the Petesfield

spinners, including Stephens (2-6) and Gumbe (3-36) and the innings closed at 165-

9. The home bowlers were backed up by enthusiastic and effective fielding and

catching by the whole team.

In reply, Petersfield openers, Alex Thomas and Rob Allerston began to build the

innings slowly against accurate bowling from the visitors. Allerston (17) departed

with the score on 30 and although Rory Newman did not last long, the home team

reached the half way mark on only 50-2. However, Thomas and Bob Weymiss

did not panic and gradually accelerated the scoring. Weymiss in particular timing

the ball well off the back foot, whilst Thomas kept the scoreboard ticking with good

running between the wickets. Weymiss was caught for a quick 28 which brought in

Liam Charles who continued to accelerate the run-rate, with a mixture of powerful

hitting and good running. These two added an unbeaten stand of 62 with Thomas

finishing on 69 and Charles 35. This was a very encouraging performance by a

young Petersfield side, with a lot of maturity shown, particularly by the batsmen.

Thomas in particular, displayed a wide variety of strokes all around the wicket and

fittingly, hit the winning runs.

Under 15s start with a win

Portsmouth and Southsea U15 v Petersfield U15
Petersfield CC won by six runs

The cricket season is back underway and at a very sunny St James ground Petersfield new captain Dan May lost the toss and field were asked to bat first.

After some delightful strokes from Gabriel Braodhurst (35 not out retired) off the first over his opening partner played an ill judged smear off H Leggitt (3 overs 1 wicket for 14 runs) and lost his leg stump. This brought Ben Anscombe (34) to the wicket and between them Ben and Gabe put on 60 before Gab retired for a well made 35. William McCurrach (0) on his debut for the club played all round a straight ball to lose his leg stump (not the greatest of starts but it can only get better from that).Oli Simpson (10) joined his cousin at the crease and pushed the score along to 90  before being adjudged LBW to C Peach (3-2-13). Thomas Stevens (3) was next in and was quickly followed back to the pavillion by Matt Friend (7) as field tried to push the score on with overs running out. Ben Anscombe who had anchored very well the innings was the last man out in the last over and allowed everyone else to play their shots. Petersfield finished on a very competitive 122 with a very slow outfield.

Having agreed to change the ball with the opposition (due to the ball being like a bar of soap) at the break of innings. Petersfield opening bowlers Oli Simpson and Ben Turk bowled well to the Hampshire squad players H Gadd (23) and H Wratten (8) but too many wides and some good stroke play from Gadd and J Peach (40 not out retired) pushed the score up to 86 for 4 before Matt Friend (2-2-7) bowled a double wicket maiden to start to turn the game Field’s way. Wickets were now falling at regular intervals with skipper May (4 -1-24) and Harvey Baker (4-1-30).
Kit Classen (2-1-9) had J Wilcookson (10) caught by Oli Simpson at mid-wicket to leave Portsmouth and Southsea on 105-7 needing 19 off the last 2 overs to get over the line. With the last two overs to be bowled by Oli Simpson (4-0-29) and Ben Turk (4-1-13) it looked to be a tall order but Portsmouth gave it a real go and took the game to the last over need 9 from it. But with Ben Turk bowling an immaculate line outside off stump to H Giles (12) only a single and a bye came off the last over before Giles was clean bowled off the last ball to leave Portsmouth and Southsea 7 runs short of their target. Field bowled well but need to reduce the wides (17) in the next game just to take the pressure off themselves. Congratulations to Gabrield Broadhurst (celebrating making the Hampshire Squad) and to Ben Anscombe who gets better with each game he plays. Also Congratulations to Ben Turk and Matt Friend for some very economical and effective bowling.

MoM would be Ben Turk for excellent early bowling and great last over

2nd XI v 3rd XI (‘cricket and chilli’)

Petersfield warmed up for the new league season with the players’ traditional ‘cricket and chilli’ match at Penns Place on the weekend.
Teams led by the Second XI and Third XI captains Richard Stephens and James Stratford-Tuke, including a number of colts playing their first game of senior cricket, fought out a low scoring, spicy encounter on a glorious spring day. A tasty last wicket partnership between Gabriel Broadhurst and Shaun Blanks sealed victory for Stratford-Tuke’s side, narrowly, by just 1 wicket.
Toby Austin and Chris Russell showed hot early season form, with 53 runs and 5 wickets respectively, Austin peppering his well-constructed innings with plenty of big shots.
The match, always an enjoyable affair, was played in excellent spirit – ideal preparation for the fiery encounters that lie ahead. There may have been a relative lack of runs as far as the cricket was concerned, but considering the amount of chilli consumed, that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing…
