Petersfield Under 13s v Portsmouth & Southsea u13s
Petersfield CC - Under 13 - Won by 7 runs
Venue - The Heath, Petersfield
Petersfield got their season off to a winning start in a very close and well contested game on Sunday 18th May. Captain Joe Clarke won the toss and decided to bat first in the hope that the outfield would dry out in the morning sun.
Portsmouth made an early breakthrough when opener Tommy Matthews misjudged a straight ball and was bowled off Harlan Randall (2 overs, 1 wicket for 15 runs). Joe Clarke (20) and Will Milner-Smith (22) promoted up the order after his heroics last season with the bat justified their coach’s faith and took the score along to 40 before both were out in quick succession
Cameron Porteous, Adam Childs and Matthew Burrage all went cheaply but with the ball moving around and a number of wides being bowled the score kept ticking over despite a middle order collapse. Max Saint (12 not Out) and Thomas Stevens took the total to 87 at the end of the 20 overs, running aggressively between the wickets and taking all the singles they could as Portsmouth kept things very tight
The total gave Petersfield something to bowl at but it would take some great fielding and bowling to restrict Portsmouth and Southsea to less than 87.
As in the Petersfield innings there was an early breakthrough as Will Milner-Smith (4-1-14) removed opener Harry Davis Marks (0) with an inswinging delivery. Harvey Baker (3-1-17) removed Harlan Randall (6). Max Saint (3-1-5) bowling very well and removed Daniel Turner (0) to leave Portsmouth on 30-4. Portsmouth then mounted a tremendous fightback with Captain Oliver Kanavan (30 retired not out) and Will Donsworth (19)
With Oliver Kanavan retiring and then Will Donsworth being superbly caught in the covers by Will Milner-Smith off Joe Clarke (4-1-5), Portmouth needed 18 off the last 2 overs to clinch victory,
Portsmouth started to take more and more risks as the pressure exerted by the superb fielding of Petersfield started to take its toll. The next four wickets fell to runouts as Portsmouth melted in the midday heat with Adam Childs, Ben Kay and Harvey Baker showing that the fielding drills during the training sessions paid off. With some overthrows in between the run outs Portsmouth needed 8 off the last over and with both sets of parents starting to have heart flutters Captain Joe Clarke came on to bowl a maiden in the last over to leave Portsmouth 7 runs short of their target.
A very close game that ebbed and flowed from one side to the other was played in the right spirit and provided superb entertainment for those watching

special mention to all the players for their fielding which at times was exceptional
