2nd XI v 3rd XI (‘cricket and chilli’)

Petersfield warmed up for the new league season with the players’ traditional ‘cricket and chilli’ match at Penns Place on the weekend.
Teams led by the Second XI and Third XI captains Richard Stephens and James Stratford-Tuke, including a number of colts playing their first game of senior cricket, fought out a low scoring, spicy encounter on a glorious spring day. A tasty last wicket partnership between Gabriel Broadhurst and Shaun Blanks sealed victory for Stratford-Tuke’s side, narrowly, by just 1 wicket.
Toby Austin and Chris Russell showed hot early season form, with 53 runs and 5 wickets respectively, Austin peppering his well-constructed innings with plenty of big shots.
The match, always an enjoyable affair, was played in excellent spirit – ideal preparation for the fiery encounters that lie ahead. There may have been a relative lack of runs as far as the cricket was concerned, but considering the amount of chilli consumed, that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing…
