Petersfield II v Grayswood II
Venue - Penns Place
Date - 11th April 2015
The first game of the season got underway under bright blue skies after early morning rain
looked to threaten the warm up game against our friends from Grayswood.
Petersfield fielded first and got off to the perfect start as Ben Turk (8 overs 1 maiden 20 run 1 wicket) removed Tom White with only his 2nd delivery as Ben got one to jag back through the gate to remove the off stump, a cracking delivery to get in the first warm up game (unlucky Tom). Andrew Surridge (16) was the next to go as Nicky Caddick (8 - 1 - 26 - 1) bowled a very similar delivery as Ben's to remove Surridge's leg stump this time from around the wicket.. Simon Beckett (36) and Dominic Westcott-White (5) then steadied the ship although scoring was difficult as Dave Squires (8 - 2 - 26 - 2) and Shaun Blanks (6 - 0 - 16 - 0) bowled tight lines getting movement off the seam and in the air.
The pressure eventually told with the score on 48 as a very sharp piece of keeping from Alex Thomas finished off a good plan from Dave Squires as Dominic was stumped down the leg side. Beckett then went 3 or 4 overs later to give Squires his 2nd wicket as a slower delivery led to him being caught at mid-off by Skipper Richard Stephens. Cam Kent (28) then came in and proceeded to show the work done in Australia over the winter was worth it as he scored his runs at better than a run a ball before mistiming a lofted drive to Ash Spencer at a deep mid-on to give Jack Hannam (6 - 0 - 25 - 4) the first of his 4 wickets, proving his back issues were in the past.
Robert Rist (25 not out) was holding the innings together at the other end but was helpless as Jack Hannam blew away the lower order removing Jonathan (7), George Gwynn (0) and Jeremy Surtes (0) in the same over. Max Beckett (0 not out) and Robert Rist survived the last couple of overs and pushed the score up to 128 off the 40 overs. A very good bowling performance from all the bowlers who showed they had blown away the winter cobwebs with Jack Hannam the pick of the bowlers.
Petersfield took to the field in confident mood with a long batting line up but things did not pan out as they had hoped.
Robert Rist (8 - 5 - 16 -3) bowled an inspired spell as it took Petersfield 29 deliveries to score a run off his bowling. Rist removed Toby Austin (1), Ash Spencer (3) and Alex Thomas (10) to leave Petersfield on 17 - 3 in the 9th over. Ben Anscombe (16) and Will Rice (16) started to rebuild the innings and took Petersfield to 47 before Will Rice was clean bowled by Cam Kent (8 - 0 - 23 - 3). In the same over Cam Kent accounted for Ben Anscombe who got a nick through to keeper Tom White. At the other end Simon Beckett (4.3 - 2 - 5 - 3) took over where Rist had left off as he removed Ben Turk (1), Shaun Blanks (0) in the same over although Shaun was convinced he had missed the ball and it hit the stumps despite being given out caught behind. Richard Stephens (0) got a grubber to be clean bowled by Kent before Nicky Caddick (16) slashed his way to 16 before laying the shot 1 too many times and missing a straight one from Beckett to give Grayswood the win by 56 runs. Well played Grayswood
Not a great way for Petersfield to start the season but it was good to blow the cobwebs out of the system and get the season underway.
