Match report: Petersfield 2s vs Waterlooville 2s

Petersfield’s young players starred in a convincing 10-wicket win for the 2s over Waterlooville 2s in a pre-season friendly on the weekend.

After winning the toss and inserting Waterlooville on a green Penns pitch, albeit one with excellent pace and carry (fantastic work Toby), Ben Turk opened the bowling with a beautiful spell combining control, pace and swing to pick up 3 wickets for just 5 runs off 6 overs (final figures 8-3-10-3).

Ollie Simpson continued to carry the attack to our opponents and fully deserved his haul of 4 wickets. There were good spells too for Chris Russell (1 for 23) and debutant Steve Gibson (1 for 14).

The odd chance went down but ‘Field mainly hung on to their catches, with two for skipper Rich Stephens and two at slip for the Silver Fox himself, Dave Squires, the second of which an absolute blinder, pouched nonchalantly with the minimum of fuss. AT behind the stumps also grabbed one to go with a trademark stumping, all of which meant Waterlooville were all out for 133 in the 38th over.

Openers Gabe Broadhurst (78* off 86 balls) and Alex Thomas (44* off 58) proceeded to knock off the runs in an impressive unbeaten partnership of 137. Both showed real intent with their positive stroke play and running between the wickets (mostly!), to the extent that the total was overhauled in only the 24th over.

This was a useful work-out for the 2s against a team two divisions higher in the league and the form of our younger players in particular bodes very well for the season ahead.
