Quiz Night Details Saturday 25th March, 7:30pm

Please add this date to your diaries - The first event of the new cricket season, the ever-popular annual Petersfield Cricket Club fundraising Quiz.
It would be great to see lots of you there so please come along to show off your general/random knowledge & have a lot of laughs.
All are welcome - members (Adults & Colts), family, friends. The more the merrier!
Teams can be put together on the night so don’t worry if there’s just one or two of you.

The date is Saturday 25th March, 7:30pm gathering for an 8pm quiz kick-off, at St Peter’s Church Hall, Petersfield.
Tickets are £10 for Adults, £6 for Colts and includes supper provided by Seafare. Menu choices are:

- Veggie burger & Chips

Club sorry to hear of the passing of club stalwart Brian Hall

Brian Hall, erstwhile umpire, scorer, huge character and supporter of Petersfield Cricket Club for well over 30 years passed away last week.  He lived alone and was found on New Year’s Day.   

 

Brian umpired the 1^st XI from the late 1960s to the 90s until the advent of neutral umpires when he became the 2^nd XIs’ regular official.  He barely missed a game, Saturday, Sunday and mid-week, home or away.  He also served as Club Treasurer and was ruthless in extracting match fees and debts from frugal players.  Although, far from being a wealthy man, he made anonymous donations to the Club; a fact that was inadvertently disclosed at a Committee meeting.

 

He was a very fair and generally strict umpire, so no great friend of toiling bowlers.  However, he was very well known across cricketing circles throughout the south because of his singing prowess and entertainment value in the bar.  He needed little encouragement and on numerous occasions at visiting clubs, the ubiquitous karaoke meant few of us returned before midnight.  Innumerable tales could be told, but one lasting legacy is that his singing resulted in the whole of Petersfield Cricket Club being banned from The Harrow after the Steep game in the early 1980s; a ban which apparently has still not been lifted.

 

Funeral and donation arrangements service details on the 24th, 2 P.M. at St Peter’s Church and afterwards at Petersfield Football Club, Love Lane .  And for those who wish to, donations can also be made to our Petersfield club account online (referenced “Brian Hall”) before CoP Thursday, a cheque donating all money will then be made to those making the arrangements for the funeral and service… 

Notice of Petersfield CC AGM Meeting Tuesday 13 Dec 16 at 7.30pm

Dear all, 

please find attached the formal calling notice for this year's Annual General Meeting to be held in the Holland Room (upstairs room) of the Square Brewery pub in Petersfield.

We very much hope that as many as possible can make it.  Please note the requirement to let me know if you intend to come (if only tentatively).  It is a constitutional requirement to hold an AGM but don't be put off!  It should be wrapped up in 60-90 minutes which leaves plenty of time for a beer and cracking a few tall stories about your cricketing feats.

Please also note there are a few vacant committee positions, most notably Chairperson and Vice Chairperson and we would very much welcome nominations for these and the other posts.

Very much hope that we will see you.

Petersfield 2s v Old Netley 2s

Petersfield Cricket Club News

A much changed team saw Petersfield 2s side start with 4 Under 16 players at a Sunny and Hot Heath ground on Saturday. A good sign that the youth program at Petersfield CC is alive and well.

Acting Captain Russell won the toss and elected to bat but as has been the case this year the home pitch was not very easy to bat on. Petersfield lost Oscar Windebank, Ben Anscombe and Tom Sherry early on with only Russell finding any form on the slow and inconsistent pitch which the visitors were exploiting with some good, accurate bowling.
Joe Clarke (8) helped to steady things for the second time in 2 weeks but when he fell things were not looking so good at 68 for 5. Russell continued to score but when he lost his wicket LBW to a grubber for 49 with the team on 87 for 5 a low score looked likely. The tail wagged however and Paul Clarke (26) and Ed Milford (13) hit some powerful shots and then Ben Cox (12 not out) worked with the tail enders to take Petersfield to a reasonable 147 for 8 from their 42 overs.

Captain Russell encouraged the team to work hard and put pressure on the opposition which seemed to work with Oscar Windebank (2-12) and Ed Bayliss (2-13) removing both openers for 1st ball ducks. Only Mo Khan played with any fluidity and Old Netley were always in the game whilst he was at the crease.

Petersfield turned to the spin of Ben Anscombe (3-22) and Chris Russell (2-16) and wickets continued to fall and eventually Khan hit Anscombe straight to Russell in the covers for a hard fought 59 and Old Netley faded to finish 87 all out.

This was a really hard won victory for the Petersfield second team and leaves them in the top 2 of the division having won 10 and lost 2 games this season with an away trip to leaders Shanklin set for next weekend.

Petersfield 2s V US Portsmouth 2s report

Petersfield 2s were looking to extend their unbeaten run to 7 games and after a poor batting performance but an conversely superb bowling performance they managed to beat US Portsmouth by 15 runs.

On another glorious Saturday at the Heath US Portsmouth captain called wrongly and it was no surprise as Petersfield skipper Frank Straw elected to bat first even with some late pullouts from the batting order.

Last week's openers Dave Squires (10) and Chris Wood (4) did not have things their own way as US’s opening bowlers got more out of the Heath wicket than any other attack as far as pace and bounce is concerned this season. Chris Wood was caught behind as the ball from T Allen (5-27) hit a crack and jumped to take a glove. Squires lasted a bit longer then Allen got a ball to misbehave as itl kept low this time and came off the bottom of the bat to take out middle stump. Frank Straw made a breezy 9 as he clattered a couple of boundaries square of the wicket before mistiming a shot to cover. Andy Butcher (0) came and went as he was clean bowled by S Jadhav (1-14) in the next over. Jack Butcher (7) and Ed Milford (16) looked to steady the ship but Jack was out caught at fine leg off a top edge.

Ed Milford was hitting anything in his hitting ark but misjudged a full delivery and was clean bowled by E Devine (2-29) to leave Petersfield 59-6. Tom Stevens (3) on his batting debut for the 2’s hung around for a while with Richard Stephens (19) but was caught again in the covers off S Lawrence (2-12). Rich Stephens was looking comfortable despite his hamstring strain but then T Allen returned and like Squires before him he got a ball that kept low and took the inside edge to be bowled. Omar Iqbal (5) kept plugging away against young Freddie Gadd (0-8) despite the legside line of the young leg spinner. Oscar Windebank(1) and Ed Bayliss (1 not out) helped the score to 99 before Iqbal was bowled to leave Petersfield 1 run short of their 3rd batting point.

A very modest total by Petersfield looked well within US Portsmouth’s range despite them only having 10 men. This was proven as they moved quickly to 37 with T Harris (18) and T Gadd (24) running well and hitting anything short to the boundary before Oscar Windebank (2-29) removed Harris LBW. Oscar then got another LBW as he hit Warburton (4) on the toe plumb in front of middle stump to leave the score 41-2. Richard Stephens (5-29) joined the attack and immediately got turn and bounce from the wicket to remove Gadd. Stephens was proving that his left arm spin was very very effective (especially at the Heath) and he picked up the next 3 wickets in quick succession thanks to some fine catches by Chris Wood and Dave Squires. At the other end Oscar Windebank was building the pressure with 2 maidens.

Rich then took his fifth wicket T Allen (0) missed a full toss to be clean bowled. Frank Straw (2-13) then returned to pick up the last 2 wickets to seal an unlikely but welcome victory for  Petersfield 2s in the 26 over.

The win puts Petersfield up to 3rd in the race for 1 of the promotion places in Regional Division 1 South.

Petersfield 2s V Steeps 2s

Petersfield 2s returned to their home ground to play local rivals Steep 2s.

Petersfield skipper Frank Straw decided to bat first as the opposition skipper called wrong on a very hot and humid day.

Dave Squires (31) had a new opening partner in Chris Wood (70) due to the number of changes in the 2s side with the start of the holiday season. The pair put on an opening stand of 118, by far the biggest of the season as they put the Steep bowling to the sword with Chris Wood especially looking in a ruthless mood as anything short on leg stump was dispatched. In the 14th over the pair had put on 64 and jokingly discussed getting to a 100 partnership and then going for a sit down and a cold beer. After drinks Chris pushed on looking very comfortable with Squires just giving the strike to his partner at every opportunity.

Local celebrity Jhon Cosgrove (3-21) came on and broke the partnership in the 25th over trapping Wood plum in front of middle stump. Will Jameson (17) joined Squires and started well pulling Ed Ellis (1-38) to the midwicket boundary. With Petersfield looking to take advantage of the superb start and push the score on Squires was caught at midwicket as he mistimed a full toss straight up in the air to be caught at midwicket. Squires trudged off having scored his highest league score with a 50 beckoning.

Rory Newman (4) joined Will Jameson but Rory departed in a similar way to Squires to a full toss off of Cosgrove. Jameson put on 20 for the 4th wicket with Andy Butcher (22) before Jameson was trapped LBW by Ellis. Jack Butcher (3) joined his father at the wicket and timed his first couple of shots beautifully through the covers before being caught at mid off.

Skipper Straw (9) came and went in 11 balls scoring 1 four before holing out to deep long off to returning opening bowler Callingham. This meant Petersfield were tottering on 178 - 7 and in danger of not getting maximum batting points in their pursuit of 3rd place, but Rich Stephens (19 not out) and Omar Iqbal (6 not out) put on 29 in 5 overs to get Petersfield to 207-7.

With a required run rate of just under 5 an over Steep started brightly despite an attack of flying ants as just like last year the little biting insects were coming up through the holes made by the stumps. After the ants flew off, Petersfield removed Callingham (2) in the 7th over thanks to a cutter from Omar Iqbal (1-12) to take out off stump. Chris Wood (1-12) bowling with a possible broken toe removed opener Gareth Dale (16) caught by Jameson at mid wicket. Petersfield kept a tight reign on the scoring and Steep only lost their third wicket with the score on 52 in the 19th over when Kiddle (6) was superbly pouched by Andy Butcher behind the stumps 1 handed off Steve Gibson (1-37).

Mike Burkie (11) hit some lusty blows as he put on 20 for the 4th wicket with skipper Ellis (70) hitting good balls for a couple of boundaries to try and change the momentum of the game. He was caught by sub fielder Adam Childs at long off (on for Chris Wood who had succumbed to his toe injury), giving Frank Straw (2-30) his first wicket. M Bugh (21) joined Ellis and put on 53 in 6 overs as some wayward bowling allowed Steep to think they could chase their total down as the run rate (despite the quick fire 50 partnership) continued to climb. When Bugh departed caught and bowled by Dan May (4-31) the score was 126 in the 34th over Steep needed 10 an over.

Ellis who had looked in no trouble at all for the whole of his innings was the 8th man out as he was caught at deep long off by Rory Newman off May who had also bowled Will Yates (0) in the same over. Rich Stephens (1-22) then trapped Jhon Cosgrove (0) plum in front of middle stump to wrap up the innings as Steep finished on 153 in the 41st over.

A great win for Petersfield which pushes them up to 4th in the table just half an average point behind 3rd place. Petersfield are at home again next week as they face US Portsmouth looking to continue their good run since defeat to Salthill 6 games ago

Petersfield's 2s repot v Wicham 1s

On a day that did not promise a lot of cricket, a truly remarkable game.took place between Petersfield and Wickham. Petersfield won the toss and elected to field first to try and give themselves the best chance of winning the game.

On a dry pitch ( despite all the rain during the week)  Wickham started slowly but steadily before Martin Rowe played back to a ball from Frank Straw(2-16). Martin Reed fell in the next over to a slower ball from Oscar Windebank (1-10) to remove him for a golden duck.
Peter Gywnn (14) fell to a catch a deep long on off Frank Straw (2-16) by Chris Salmon in the over after that leaving Wickham 28-3. Richard Stephens (2-19) returned to the attack after being not needed the week before to remove Bob Haywood (5) caught and bowled. The combination of pace from one end from Toby Austin (2-12) and spin from Stephens at the other worked well for skipper Straw. Austin had Martin Rowan (6) caught at gully by Chris Russell before catching Jon O’leary (5) off his own bowling to leave Wickham 55-6. That soon became 55-7 as Stephen had Steve O’leary (1) trapped plum in front lbw.

Chris Russell (2-16) then bowled David Chetri (4) leaving Wickham 64-8 before the heavens opened and the rains descended to halt the victory charge. The new covers were deployed (sponsored by the Paradise Balti House) and hoses attached but a lot of the players thought that was game over with still another 12 overs of the Wickham innings to be bowled. One attempt to get the covers off looked to have succeeded an hour later only for the rain to start again just as play was to resume. After a lot more hard work soaking up the water on the square using the the waterhog play resumed at 5pm.

Petersfield continued with Russell and Stephens and Russell removed John Gywne (10) but Andy Gwyne and Steve Judge batted out the overs to score 89-9.

After some frantic adjusting of the scores Petersfield were set a victory target of 54 from 20 overs, at around 2.5 runs an over this looked a simple run chase with the sun now out and no more rain clouds in sight.

Chris Salmon (2) and skipper Straw (4) opened the batting and set the tone for the early part of the run chase as David Chetri (5-13) blew away the top order with accurate left arm seam working on the old principle of you miss I hit, the only members of the revised top order who looked comfortable were Andy Butcher (6) and Ed Milford(10)  who took  the score to 18-5 before Butcher was caught. Ed Milford played well and with Chris Russell took the score to 28 before both went quickly and the winning score looked a long way off with 7 down. The crowd knew it would only take a couple of  steady heads and last week's opener Toby Austin (7 not out) and all-rounder Oscar Windebank (17) took the score to 51 before Windebank was caught at mid-wicket trying to pull to the short boundary. Rich Stephens (2 not out) and Austin saw Petersfield home with 8 balls to spare.

A big sigh of relief from all especially the skipper as a nail biting game of cricket came to an end. Well bowled by both sides and well done to the Petersfield 2s players and spectators to get the game finished after the afternoon deluge. Not many games were played in any division so the money invested by the club in water hog and covers paid dividends. A game played in good spirits despite the weather interruptions.

Petersfield 2s win over Hambledon 3s

Report from yesterday's 2s win over Hambledon.

A local derby of sorts with two of the oldest clubs in the world meeting at The Heath in Petersfield. In overcast conditions with a threat of rain and a new ball likely to swing Hambledon elected to bowl first having won the toss.

Hambledon got off to the perfect start with Chris Salmon(0) getting a ball which jumped off a length and ballooned back to the bowler C Berry (2-18) for a simple caught and bowled. Skipper (Chris Russell (69 not out) joined opener Dave Squires (15) in the middle. The pair ground out a 46 run partnership on a difficult pitch which allied with some good bowling kept the run rate down. In the 19th over with the scoring rate needing to be lifted, Squires cut to backward point only to watch A Barfoot take a diving catch.

With the shine off the ball and the opening bowlers seen off, the stage was set for the scoring rate to be increased. Chris Wood scored a quickfire 14 before being stumped off S Ripner (1-36). Will Jameson (1) then slammed a ball back at the bowler Wayne Norman (2-36) to be caught and bowled. Ed Milford with instructions to hit out lasted 3 balls. This left Petersfield 75-5 when last year's skip Rich Stephens (35) joined Chris Russell and the pair put on 62 in around a run a ball with Stephens hitting a couple of big sixes to get back to nearly his best. Oscar Windebank and Omar Iqbal running hard to support a very tired Chris Russell to take the Petersfield score to 158 off their 42 overs.

When play resumed the Hambledon innings got off to the same start with opener J Bridgeman backing away from a rising delivery from Oscar Windebank (2-22) to give a simple return catch. Chris Wood then induced P Silvester (2) into a lofted drive to be caught in the covers by Omar Iqbal,who then repeated the catch off Oscar to remove the other opener J Waldron (18) in the next over. Hambledon were reduced to 21-3 inside 10 overs. A 60 run partnership between A Barfoot (26) and Paul Brighton (33) threatened to derail Petersfield's bid to win the game. But the skipper and ex-skipper combined again to take the game away from Hambledon as Russell (4-11 off 8 overs) took both wickets in the space of 3 overs one stumped and the other caught behind by Stephens. Omar Iqbal (2-10) cleaned up the next 2 wickets before Chris Salmon took just 6 balls to finish the game off as Hambeldon went from 80-3 to be bowled out for 102.

A much improved fielding performance from Petersfield was the catalyst for the fine win allied with a superb all round performance from Chris Russell, backed up by ex-skipper Rich Stephens with bat and gloves.

Petersfield 2s win against IBM.

With the usual juggling of players between the 3 Petersfield senior sides happening again this week last years skipper Rich Stephens took command again and not surprisingly won the toss (did not lose a toss last season) and inserted IBM on a dry and cracked surface at the Heath.

Steve Gibson (0 for 25) and Ed Bayliss (2-27) bowled tightly with Ed picking up 2 of the top 3 in a spell of menacing leg spin bowling, getting a lot of turn from the dry surface. Chris Salmon (1-9) replaced Gibson from the ‘mound end’ and got P Rowson (27)  caught at 3rd man by a scampering Ed Bayliss to leave the visitors 35-3 off 15 overs.

The pace attack continued from the mound end with Omar Iqbal (2-22) replacing Salmon and getting G Wylde (2) caught on the rebound off the keeper by Chris Russell at slip. He then hit a crack and clean bowled A Ahmed (2), who made the error of playing back at the Heath as the ball never got off the ground. Ed Milford (1-16) bowled well and picked up M Smith(19) caught by Ed Bayliss. The wicket of Smith brought together R Barnard (39) and M Rayer (34 not out) who put on 75 for the 6th wicket as they ran very well and punished the bad balls. He partnership was broken in the 41st over by Chris Russell (1-30). Captain Rich Stephens (1-14) picked up the 8th wicket as IBM finished on 153-8.

After the ever wonderful tea produced by Denise Stephens (one of the big pluses in playing for the 2s imho) Petersfield set about the total facing spin from one End and medium pace from the other taking a leaf out of Stephens captaincy. The openers lasted 9 overs before both Squires (4) and Salmon (10) were back in the hutch. Andy Butcher (12) pushed the scoring along before attacking once too often and was stumped off of Barnard (2-40). The score was 38 when Rob Allerston (23) joined Chris Russell (66) and the pair put on 74 for the 4th wicket before the required run rate forced Allerston to try and hit out. Marcus Sampson (9) was next in and pulled a hamstring running a quick single. He was caught again trying to hit boundaries by Smith. Russell had gone to his 50 sweeping to fine leg (see picture below of the shot) before he got bowled by a slow bouncer in the 39th over. Rich Stephens (12 not out) and young Ed Milford (4 not out) saw Petersfield home with 4 balls to spare as Ed hit a lofted drive over mid wicket.

A good result for Petersfield who were only not in control of the game during the 75 run partnership from IBM, Petersfield pick up 23 points to add to the win 2 weeks ago at Friends.

WAITROSE COLTS BAG PACK

Waitrose have kindly agreed for our Colts to come into the store to raise much-needed funds, plus raise awareness of our brilliant cricket club.
This will be on Good Friday, 25th March. Colts need to be at least 11 years old, and can we please ask them to come along for at least 1 hour between 10am & 2pm. If they are able to do longer then that is wonderful.
Please ensure they wear cricket whites. Adults representing the club will be there at all times to supervise the Colts, who will be standing one to each Waitrose till to help pack shopping for the store’s customers, who will hopefully be so delighted with their helper they will make a donation!

Could all volunteers please email Angie Clarke at angie@japh.co.uk with the time slot they are able to help with, so Angie can ensure a spread of volunteer Colts across the 4 hour session.

Colts winter training schedule and forms

Dear All

I am pleased to confirm our arrangements for winter training. Please see attached details of the planned sessions for next term - hall availability does change and so there may be some further changes to this schedule. For the winter coaching this year the girls will be training with the boys. The coaches will ensure that the plans are appropriate for all of the participants. In line with the national approach, the assumption is that the girls will train with the age group below i.e. an U15 girl will train with the U13s. However the club will be flexible with these arrangements and if you would like to discuss coaching arrangement for your daughter please contact Paul Clarke who is the Lead Coach for the Girls (paul@japh.co.uk).

With a short term we have included coaching sessions over half term - coaches will discuss this with people to check that this is worth doing.

I have attached the membership forms for this year (in word and PDF format). Because of the different payment arrangements agreed by the Club at the recent AGM there is a different form for both the boys and the girls. Both forms include an option to join the 200 Club - this only costs £12 to join and helps raise funds for the club whilst also giving you 12 chances to win cash prizes).

When we are using Bedales please make sure that you park at Dunannie car part and walk up to the Sports Hall (and that your child can then change into sports shoes). It is possible to park on site at Churchers'. Please also do your best to get your child to coaching 5 minutes before the scheduled start time to allow a register to be taken so that the coaching can start promptly.

Indoor U16s maintain 100 % record

Another maximum points win for the lads on Sunday. A run-out on the last ball of the Portsmouth innings gave us all six bowling points (following catch of the season from Ben A).

A faultless, chance-less chase secured all the batting points and the win.

Petersfield Cricket Club awarded £75,000 of funding from Sport England through Inspired Facilities.

Some of you will be aware that last year the club decided to apply to Sports
England through Inspired Facilities for an award to modernise The Heath
pavilion, provide weatherproofing equipment (covers and water hog) and carryout
work to improve drainage of the ground.  The funding has been secured for the
covers etc and they were delivered during the season, the drainage work funding
is in place and we are talking to contractors.  Sport England has now confirmed
that we have received a £75,000 award through Inspired Facilities! (Inspired
Facilities is a programme with a share of National Lottery funding from Sport
England which has contributed towards the sporting legacy of the London 2012
Olympic and Paralympic games). The award is for the modernisation of the
Heath pavilion is part of an overall project cost of £101,895 (this includes
purchase of equipment, including the water hog, white goods and covers etc, the
difference has already been raised or we have identified where the money can
come from).

We were informed at the end of last month but the news has been embargoed to
allow Sport England to maximise the publicity, we have now sent out a press
release.

While we put a huge amount of work into the submission it is a very competitive
process and the odds were always against us, to get an award is brilliant, to get
exactly what we were asking for is beyond our wildest dreams. My thanks to
Carolyn Warne and those who provided information, particularly Mike Freeston
and Nicky May, often at short notice with tight deadlines; those who have
provided partnership funding towards the overall project; for the support we have
received including the town, district and county councils, the ECB and Hampshire
Cricket Board as well as Sport England; and those through our survey helped us
scope our vision and application to Sport England to make this possible.

This is fantastic news and very significant for the club, it should give us the ability
to put the club on to a new level providing high quality cricket and facilities for
Petersfield.  We will now be working hard to deliver this project as soon as we
can.

Under 16s start with indoor season win over Havant Cc

Hoping to avoid a repeat of the opening defeat of the summer, Petersfield were ruthless in an 80 run win over Havant.

Broadhurst (38) and Anscombe (39) gave a masterclass in indoor batting, milking the decent Havant attack for three after three without a single pot-shot at the back wall. 

With the openers both retired by the end of the fifth over, Turk (5) and Campbell (4) looked to keep the score moving but we're both cleverly caught off the netting by C. Dean in Havant's best over. 

Clarke (17) and Milford (22) came together at 76/2 and pushed on relentlessly in the middle overs, with Milford leaning into three straight 4s before playing around a straight one.

With Clarke the third batter to fall to a Dean catch off the side-netting, the returning Broadhurst and Anscombe maintained the momentum. Broadhurst was run out in the last over, but Anscombe held his end, and continued the high scoring rate until he too was run out off the last ball of the innings.

Petersfield 159/6 (12 overs).

Facing a daunting total, Havant were immediately pinned back by Turk (2 overs, 10/0) with some rapid dot-ball bowling. 

Campbell (2 overs, 29/0) matched Turk for pace and aggression but fell victim to some tight wide calls. Sharp fielding saw Udy (9) run out in the 4th over. 

Clarke (2.4 overs, 18/2) and Anscombe (2 overs, 18/1) kept the shackles on while F. Steel (27) valiantly attempted to hold the Havant innings together. 

Petersfield were sensing blood, though, and a lightning, diving deflection onto the non-striker's stumps by Clarke off his own bowling saw C. Dean (0) run out. (After the game in a show of hands of those who thought it was deliberate, Clarke lost the vote 5-1). 

Campbell embodied the urgency of the Petersfield fielding when he picked up and threw, giving L. Dean (0) no chance of regaining safety after setting off for an unlikely run. 

An entertaining caught-and-bowled saw Anscombe make an excellent one-handed parry away to his right before an interminable series of juggles ended with him finally grasping the ball somewhere around extra cover, M. Carter (1) being the eventual victim. 

F. Steel returned to be confidently snaffled at point by Turk, and Clarke trapped D. Russell (13) lbw off the next ball to seal the win, and leave himself on a hat-trick for the next game.

Broadhurst showed his growing maturity as a skipper with a thoughtful and proactive captaincy. The bold placement of three fielders on the off-side in the opening overs showed great imagination and a well-placed confidence in his bowlers.

Havant 79/6 (8.4 overs).

With more to come from Petersfield in both the batting and bowling departments, this early win bodes very well for an excellent indoor season. Well done lads!

Last game of the season so close and yet so far

Well the last game of the season has been played and yet again we were beaten by one guy who was too good to be playing on a Sunday (story of the whole season)

Some notable performances today despite the defeat with James Stratford-Tuke getting 3-26 (including the lad who got 81) off 7 overs. Dan May 3-23 off 7 including 2 in 2 balls and Adam Childs picking up 3 wickets for 4 runs of 1.4 overs. We battled back from 122-1 to 162 all out as the Sunday lads kept going brilliantly despite the onslaught from a player who plays Saturday 3 levels above our 1s, who by the way was out plumb off Nigel Straws 2 ball as the ball would have removed middle and middle with a bit of middle to boot.

We then move on to the batting which started well with Oscar Windebank knocking 22 off 10 balls to put on 31 for the first wicket. Unfortunately we then had the issue with the same player taking 4-4 off 6 overs as he took advantage of the sun being directly behind his arm as he removed John Childs, Tom Stratford-Tuke, John Windebank and James Stratford-Tuke leaving Petersfield 5 down for 55.

Some very stubborn resistance from the lower order got The Sunday side up to 121 with skipper Dave Squires scoring his highest ever score 42 with a pitch proving harder and harder to bat on.

Apart from the sun controversy and the one player this was very close contest despite the 41 run defeat.

Colts Presentation and Fun day details

Dear All

I am pleased to be able to confirm the arrangements for the final 2 colts cricket events of the summer. I hope everyone had a really enjoyable time training and playing for the club and to celebrate our summer of cricket we now have the presentation evening and the colts fun day coming up.

Presentation Evening

The presentation evening is on Friday 4th Sept at Petersfield Rugby Club. As with last year we are splitting the event in two but with less of a gap between the 2 sessions.

The Girls, the Under 7s and Under 9s will be at 6pm

The Under 11s, Under 13s, Under 15s and the indoor teams will be at 7:15pm

(the presentations for the U19s will be at the senior event the week after)

It would be really good if we could get a good turnout and it would be helpful if you could let your coaches know whether you and the colts are attending or not (please can U11s let me know).

Fun-day

The colts fun-day is taking place on Saturday 5th September at the Heath Cricket Ground. This is always a really good day and gives a chance for the parents to pit their skills against the colts (if I use my very selective memory I can't remember the colts beating the parents in any of the matches). The bar and BBQ should be running and it's good fun. Please let your coach know whether your child will be attending. Coaches will also be looking for parents to play in the game (any standard will do) and if you really don't want to play they will also want a volunteer or two to help run the BBQ. The approximate timings are as below - please be ready to play at the allotted time (again could U11s please let me know)

Girls – 9:15-11:00

U7 – 11:15-12:15

U9 – 12:30-2:00

U11 – 2:15-3:45

U13 – 4:00 -6:00

There is no U15 / U17 game this year because the U15s are playing their league title decider at Portsmouth & Southsea.

Thanks to everyone for their support this year and I hope you have enjoyed the season. The coaches now have a few months off but we are making plans for the indoor nets which will be starting in January. If anyone would like to get involved next year (e.g. helping with coaching, scoring or managing a team please do let me know

United Services vs Petersfield 1s

Petersfield slipped to defeat against United Services, losing by 34 runs in their County Division 2 encounter at Burnaby Road in Portsmouth.

Batting first on a firm wicket with a tinge of green, Services got off to a flyer. Indeed Field did well to peg the league high-flyers back to 55 for 2 and later 69 for 4, with Barnes (2-25 off 10 overs) instrumental in applying the squeeze and removing the dangerous May for 36.

However Robbins (52) and Hounsome (52*) came together in a vital 92-run partnership for the fifth wicket, helping to propel Services to a healthy-looking 206 for 7 after 45 overs. Nevertheless Petersfield at the interval were pretty satisfied to have restricted their opponents to that score after the early flurry of runs.

It might have been better still but for a few dropped catches and some loose fielding on the lush outfield, the grass being grown in preparation for the United States rugby team using the ground as their training base for the forthcoming Rugby World Cup.

Petersfield started solidly in reply and were not far behind the rate at drinks. However Services’ slow bowlers Easton and Joy gradually tightened their grip and wickets fell as Field chased the game, with no fewer than seven players caught in the ring or the deep. Opener Thomas top scored with 36.

The defeat means that hopes of promotion were all but dashed for this season but the side will aim to finish a successful term on a high next week in their final league fixture against Andover IIs at the Heath.
