First half century for David Longland

Petersfield Sunday XI v Swanmore

On a very hot day PCC batted first on what turned out to be an inconsistent strip.  Charles (19) and Hannam (18) started well but were unable to push on.  Dodd (elevated to No.3!) batted well for his 15. Dave Longland came in at 7 and batted sensibly dispatching the bad balls to the boundary.  Others came and went but then Helen Whittaker came to the crease.  She must have watched Geoff Boycott, she refused to be intimidated by the hostile track!  Batting several overs before getting off the mark.  She performed a great support role for the ever improving Longland whose score was creeping along nicely.  He hit two successive fours in the penultimate over taking him to 48.  With Helen on strike they took a single and then another single took him to 49.  Dave was left on strike with one ball to face before the innings closed.  Fielders were brought in to stop the single (spoilsports!)  this is Sunday cricket, they all cried.  But matter not, Dave despatched the ball to the boundary to complete his half century and his personal highest score.  A sterling effort ably supported by Ms Whittaker who finished on 12 not out for a final team total of 152 for 7.

A modest score but not an easy wicket to play.

Petersfields' bowlers gained the upper hand with Blanks taking two wickets.  However a mid order partnership of 43 moved Swanmore to 84 with the fourth wicket to fall.  During this period Petersfield's fielders developed Teflon hands!!  Dropping numerous chances.  This was their undoing as Swanmore pushed the score along with, McCracken (30*), Childs (27) and D Knight (24) the main contributors.  They reached their target (153 for 6) with 15 overs to spare.

Man of the match definitely goes to Dave Longland (NB.  He hasn't bought a round yet!).  In fact I don't think i've ever seen his wallet!!!

Well done Dave L - great innings.

Catching practice at the nets on Thursday me included!
