Petersfield Sunday XI v Steep
Result: Petersfield CC - Friendly XI Won by 14 runs
Date: Sun 23rd Jun 2013
Petersfield
lost the toss and were asked to bat on a grey, overcast and wet
afternoon. Captain Marcus Sampson (0) opened the batting with Alex
Thomas (35) and although it was a slow start Alex Thomas played some
nice pushes to mid-off and watched the ball well as D Collins (1-34 off
9) got some seam movement. Marcus was struggling to get the ball off the
square and was finally out in bizarre fashion as he was caught by the
keeper playing a sweep shot which hit the back of his bat and looped up.
Bob Wemyss (1) gave a return catch to young Jake Campbell (2-27 off 7).
Even younger player Gabriel Broadhurst (54) and Alex put on 67 for the
3rd wicket as the pair showed great skill and composure before Thomas
got out to John Smith (3-31 off 7). Rory Newman (55) carried on the
scoring as he and Gabe put on 80 before Gabe came down the wicket trying
to push the score on to give Jhon Cosgrove (1-57 off 8) his only wicket
of the day and was stumped as the ball beat his bat on the inside edge.
Christie
Salmon (15) played a couple of sweetly timed shots on the leg side
before he was bowled by Collins who had returned to the attack to try
and get some late wickets. Liam Charles was then pushed up the order
(26) and did exactly what his captain wanted as he scored at a run a
ball to push the score beyond 200. Rory Newman (56) then got the runs he
needed to take him past 50 for the first time before hitting a six off
the next ball. As it turned out the scoreboard was wrong and he was
actually only on 49 so it was lucky he did not get out as he would have
been livid with himself and the scorers. Anyway it was a great moment
for the young lad who had been close a few times and deserved the
plaudits he got from his teammates and the opposition. The inning
finished on 217-8 a good total given the weather and conditions.
After
tea and some more rain Petersfield started the defence of their total
with Christie Salmon (0-10 off 3) and Josh Phipps (1-25 off 4.5). Opener
D Knight (49) played beautifully before nicking the ball off Liam
Charles (1-25 off 5) through to keeper Sampson. Keeper T McCubbin (25)
became Nick Woodruff’s (5-29 off 8) first wicket as he was bowled. John
Smith (7) was then superbly caught at mid-off by Christie as he flung
himself full length to take a diving catch to get Petersfield into the
match. This was despite some lusty hitting from D Collins (70). When
Collins eventually got out to a sharp turning delivery from Nick
Woodruff he had put Steep in sight of the the 218 target. Petersfield
then responded as Dave Squires (2-47 off 7) returned to the attack to
tie down the Steep lower order after being severely tonked by Collins in
his initial spell of 4 overs. With Nick Woodruff bowling very well at
the other end wickets continued to fall and with victory in site for
Petersfield, Marcus turned to his two wicket keepers to bowl and Bob
Wemyss and Alex Thomas went for 19 off 2 overs with Bob bowling an 11
ball over. After the comedy of some of the bowling Nick and Josh Phipps
returned to the attack to clean up and leave Steep on 203 all out. A
good game of cricket played in the right spirit for a Sunday Friendly
Man Of the Match - Nick Woodruff for his 5 wickets but special mention to Rory and Gabe for their superb 50s
Moment
of the Match - should be Christies catch but at the end of the day Bob
Wemyss’ over was a sight for those that witnessed it they will never
forget!

First League Win For Petersfield Ladies
Petersfield Ladies
entertained Burridge in their 3rd league match still
looking for their 1st win on a cloudy and cold morning on
Sunday.
Petersfield lost the toss
and were asked to bat and the usual opening partnership of Lorna
Williams and Emma Stead quickly punished any wayward bowling as the
Burridge bowlers struggled with the early conditions and the wet
ball.
Lorna Williams was unlucky to be run out in the 13th
over after an opening partnership of 82 but Molly Bowles quickly
supported Emma Stead in adding another 46 runs before she was bowled
for 17. Helen Whitaker then proved that she can bat in scoring a
quick 23 and pushing Stead for many quick singles. A couple of quick
wickets fell as Petersfield tried to push the run rate even higher
before Emma Stead fell LBW to Hollie Jordan for 98 - an agonising 2
runs short of her maiden century leaving Petersfield on 205 for 6
from their 35 overs.
Burridge, who were
already missing a couple of their better players, were further
weakened when Chloe Hulse had to retire from the game when fielding
one of Stead’s fierce pull shots and this left their batting line
up a little exposed. Wickets fell at regular intervals with all of
Petersfield’s 5 bowlers taking at least one wicket and wrapping up
the Burridge reply for 22 leaving Petersfield with a big victory
margin of 183 runs.
Molly
Bowles and Helen Whitaker again played well but the stand out player
of the match was once again Emma Stead who, despite losing her wicket
for 98, still averages an impressive 69 runs per innings this season.

Petersfield 3s v St Cross Symodians 6s
Result: Petersfield CC - 3rd XI Won by 3 wickets
Date: Sat 22nd Jun 2013
Petersfield
took the field after Captain James Stratford-Tuke won the toss. The
Pitch looked damp after the early morning rain. Oscar Windebank (3-22
off 8 overs) opened the bowling and with his 2nd ball of the match
removed opener Morgan Smith, two balls later he removed young Harry
Trusser.
At
the other end Ben Turk had Colin Smith caught at slip by Stratford-Tuke
to leave St Cross 3 down for no runs in two overs. The next over Oscar
removed Jack Soper for another duck before Ben Powell was caught at
square leg by Ed Davenport leaving St Cross with less runs than wickets
at 5 for 3. Captain Russell Herd (77) then came to the wicket but could
not stop the wickets falling as Oscar Windebank ran out Peter Wood for 3
with a very sharp piece of fielding at short fine leg. Wicket keeper
Curtis Springcote-Gubbings (3) was then superbly caught by John
Windebank as he seemed to hang in the air as he flung an arm up at short
cover, he then ensured he did not drop the catch as he swivelled in the
air to keep his elbows off the ground. A piece of skill that would not
look out of place in the ICC Champions Trophy.
At
this point captain Russell really took a liking to anything short and
with Mike Glogg (8) and Andy Burgess (13) staying with him they managed
to push the score along 61-8 and then 100-9 as Russell had 90% of the
strike. Alex Squires (1-19 off 3) and Dave Squires (1-25 off 3) took the
brunt of the hitting but picked up the wickets of Glogg and Burgess
between them.
With
the score a lot more than captain Stratford-Tuke had wanted he turned
to Ben Turk (3-10 off 6) and he finally removed Russell lbw to leave St
Cross on 120 all out in 29 overs.
Petersfield
were disappointed with the final score having conceded 96 for the last 3
wickets but credit has to go St Cross for not crumbling under the very
good fielding and bowling from Petersfield. Petersfield would have taken
that score before the game started.
WIth
some good opening bowling from St Cross, Petersfield had a slow start
with runs very difficult to come by. James Stratford-Tuke (3 off 32
balls) and Eoin Seger (8 off 24) both got out in similar fashion trying
to put away wide deliveries from Ben Powell (1-10 off 10 with 7 maidens)
and Harry Trusser (2-19 off 5) respectively. This left Petersfield on
38-2 off 21 overs with John Windebank (26 retired hurt) steadfast at the
other end until one quick single too many pulled his hamstring forcing
him off the field. Paddy May (8) and Oscar Windebank (4) came and went
and with the run rate rising Petersfield were 59-4 off 25 overs and
wobbling. Ben Turk (38) was riding his luck a bit with some lofted shots
not going to hand but with his Under 13 coach Dave Squires (11) the
pair put on 34 in 8 overs running 2 or 3 threes before Squires missed
timed a pull off Morgan Smith (4-48 off 10) leaving Petersfield within
sight of the victory target of 121 with 8 overs left.
Young
Ben continued to play his shots with teammate Joe Mayall (6) who broke
his bat trying to score the runs required. At this stage Petersfield had
reached 104. Ed Davenport stayed with Ben until the young man spoilt
his innings trying to hit the winning runs off Smith to be bowled with
just 2 runs required to win with 4 overs left. Ollie Simpson (1 not out)
who had bowled well without any luck earlier in the day joined
Davenport (9 not out) who hit a lovely cover drive and ran 2 thinking he
had won the game only to be told Ollie had not grounded his bat and was
one short. Ed then hit the winning 4 in the 40th over. The win leaves
Petersfield unbeaten and 2nd in the table by ½ a point.
Man of The Match - Ben Turk for another superb all round performance
Moment of the Match - John Windebank’s acrobatic superb catch

Petersfield U9 Pumas vs Liphook & Riplsey U9
Petersfield U9 Pumas vs Liphook & Riplsey U9
Thursday 20th June
Penns Place
Liphook 281 (1 wicket)
Petersfield 250 (6 wickets)
Petersfield won the toss and decided to bowl. They bowled tidily, giving
away only 26 extras, biut wickets eluded them, taking only one (well
bowled, Ben Grinter). Liphook's top scorer was Luke Anstey, with 12 from
7 balls, helping them to a total of 281. Petersfield started their
innings strongly, with Louis Ridge-Mullen and Ben Grinter scoring 16
between them, but the rest of the side struggled against some fast
bowling from Luke Anstey (3 wickets for 1 run) and Jack B (2 wickets for
6 runs), and they ended on 250, 31 runs behind.
Petersfield Pumas U9 v Fareham & Crofton U9
Petersfield Pumas U9 v Fareham & Crofton U9
Thursday 6 June, Penns Place
Fareham & Crofton won by 117 runs
Well that was an interesting game. Well beaten
by a side that would do well in the A league. Fareham has some very
fast and accurate (and tall!) bowlers, and a few big (and even taller)
hitters, but the Pumas coped really well in what was at time quite an
intense game, against a well-drilled side and their very enthusiastic
coach.
Report:
After winning their first
two games, the Petersfield Pumas U9 team experienced what it's like to
lose a game on a very warm evening at Penns Place. After a delayed start
due to traffic hold-ups on the A3, Fareham & Crofton U9s opened the
batting and started slowly, but soon showed what powerful batsmen they
had. Ronnie Reeve scored an impressive 37, with two others scoring over
20, including plenty of boundaries. Petersfield bowled tightly, giving
away fewer extras than in previous matches, but the younger boys' lack
of pace showed. Henry Amis, one of four players making their debut,
bowled his two overs beautifully, taking a wicket with his first ball in
his first match. With some dropped catches due to the low sun, Fareham
reached an impressive total of 337. Petersfield went into bat and after
some early scares with jittery running, they settled down and showed a
lot of confidence against some very strong bowling and a well-organised
fielding side. The bales soon started to fall, with Fareham taking a
total of 11 wickets in the innings, but the Petersfield batsmen kept
their heads up and kept scoring singles, with some determined
opportunistic running adding a fair number of byes. Petersfield's player
of the match was Jonty Baynham-Hughes who scored some classy runs
against their fast bowlers, and, after seeing the ball sprayed around
the boundary in his first bowling over, worked out how to bowl
differently and keep the batsman at his crease for most of his second
over. Overall an easy win for Fareham but the Pumas put in another
fearless and enthusiastic performance.
Petersfield Girls under 12’s v Chichester Priory 17th June 2013
-->
We have found a new
opponent with a young side to match our young guns and took to the
field to bat 1st in a 16 over game of pairs cricket
against Chichester Priory on Monday. Although this was an under 12’s
game most of the Petersfield players were under 10, with Gabby Wadey
making her debut at only 6 years old.
Petersfield produced a
very solid batting performance with virtually every player making a
scoring contribution. The lack of boundaries proved that it’s
keeping your wicket and not hitting boundaries that produce a good
score in this format of the game as Petersfield posted an impressive
263 for the loss of 2 wickets from their 16 overs. The highlight of
which was the scampered 2 runs by Gabby and Ellie from the
penultimate ball of the innings.
2 things made the
difference for Petersfield in this game. Firstly they bowled exactly
half the amount of wides and no balls as their opposition and in
addition to this they took an amazing 9 wickets leaving Chichester 34
runs short at 229 for 9. Lauren bowled extremely well supported by
Ella’s wicket keeping with 2 caught behinds but overall the wickets
were shared around although a special mention should go to Ola for
her 2 high catches and 3 wickets from 2 overs. Madeline also took her
1st wicket for the club.
With another 30 girls
practising whilst this game took place the future is not looking bad
for the girls section of the club.

Petersfield CC U13s v Havant CC U13s
Having
spent all week attempting to find boys and girls not playing in the
local football tournament coach Dave Squires arrived at The Heath on an
overcast morning with just 10 players (2 under 10’s). Captain Matt
Friend won the toss and immediately opted to bat on a damp green pitch.
This
decision was justified as opener Will Udy departing first ball as Ben
Turk (5 for 4 off 4 overs) found his line and length and removed the
first 3 batsmen in his first 3 overs all comprehensively bowled. Harry
Richards took a fine return catch as well as Havant were reduced to 7
for 4 wickets after 4 overs. Captain Friend (1 for 8 off 3) bought
himself on with Under 10 Oscar Amis (3-11 off 4) and the pair reduced
Havant to 18-8. Then came a fight back from Dougall Russell (7) and Ben
Longhurst (6) who batted together to reach 44 before Harry Richards
returned to break the partnership with a lovely yorker. With the ball
now wet as the drizzle arrived the bowlers had trouble holding the ball
making life very difficult for keeper Ed Milford. Oscar Amis then
accounted for Longhurst caught by Harry Richards at mid wicket to close
the Havant inning on 52.
Captain
Friend decided to change the batting order so as the game was not lost
to the rain and moved himself up to open. He then proceeded to miss time
a cover drive into the hands of Russell off Ben Longhurst (1-9 off 2).
Ben Turk (4) then pulled a high full toss out to deep backward square
leg to leave Petersfield 25-2. But with Gabriel Broadhurst (30 not out)
stroking the ball to all parts Petersfield looked good to close the game
down quickly. As Gabe was then forced to retire, due to league rules it
was left to Ed Milford (12) to push the side to 50-4 leaving Harry
Richards and Jack Butcher to score the winning runs. Mention has to made
of the fielding and catching of Havant who completely disregarded the
poor conditions to catch superbly.
Another good win which leaves Petersfield in 4th place in the league with 62 points, especially with only 10 lads playing.
Man of the Match - Ben Turk and Harry Richards
Moment of the match - the catch to dismiss Petersfield captain Matt Friend.

Petersfield 3s v Colden Common 2s
Result: Petersfield CC - 3rd XI Won by 20 runs
Date: Sat 15th Jun 2013
Petersfield
arrived in Colden Common just as the heavens opened. At 13:30 there
seemed no chance that we would get a game of cricket played never mind
start on time. It came as a shock to some of the senior players when it
was announced by Matt Friend (u13) making his debut in senior cricket
that Petersfield had lost the toss and were asked to bat !
James
Stratford-Tuke (2) and John Windebank (16) opened and found the going
tough as the pitch which was drying thanks to a strong wind and now
sunshine still offered the bowlers lateral movement. James departing
thanks to a fantastic catch as the fielder dived full length to pick up a
lofted onside shot just above the turf. John was joined by Eoin Seager
(33) making a much awaited return in the middle and pushed the score
along to 50-2 before John mistimed a pull shot to be caught at mid
wicket. Oscar Windebank (25) then came out and carried on where he left
off last week with some beautiful straight drives (1 six and 3 fours) to
give the innings some middle order momentum. Paul Clarke (28) saw 4
partners come and go as the scoring became a little easier with Matt
Friend (5) playing a couple of nice paddle sweeps to the fine leg
boundary before having a ball pop off the surface to be caught in the
covers. Joe Mayall (8) played some lusty shots before he was standing on
his bat as Paul Clarke called him for a quick single (the young lad
will learn to back up). Paul departed with the score on 135 having. With
the two Squires’s last pair at the wicket the score reached 143 before
young Alex missed a straight one.
With
the weather now set fair Petersfield started the task of defending a
good total on a slow pitch. They got off to the perfect start as Alex
Squires threw the ball in from mid on just missing the stumps, in the
confusion that followed both Colden Common batsmen found themselves at
the same end with keeper David Longland having an easy task of removing
the bails to leave them 2 for 1 wicket. Sam Perkins (60) and J Reegan
(17) steadied the Colden Common ship before Ollie Simpson (1-11 off 4)
took his first senior wicket of the season thanks to an outstanding
catch from Alex Squires. Fielding again at mid on he misjudged a lofted
pick up shot from Reegan, came in to far before running backwards and
reaching up to pluck the ball from the air one handed falling backwards.
Paul
Clarke (0-38 off 7) returned and should have had the wicket of James if Dave
Squires had held his lofted shot at mid wicket. The drop seemed to
inspire the team as Oscar Windebank (2-29 off 10) then removed James
and Cooper in successive overs both bowled, second one had the off stump
cartwheeling away with the keeper catching one of the bails as it went
towards his head.
With
Sam Perkins still at the crease Colden Common still looked to be in the
driving seat as he helped the score along to 104 before captain
Stratford-Tuke turned to Dave Squires (4-29 off 7.3). Despite his first
over going for twelve as the wind seemed to get stronger, Squires then
proceeded to remove the next 3 wickets including Perkins caught by Oscar
Windebank. Oscar WIndebank nearly got a 3rd wicket as young Alex
Squires nearly out did his earlier catch with a superb diving effort
where he just got his fingertips to it only to lose it then catch it
again, it then popped finally out of his grasp as his elbow hit the
turf. This did not affect the team as Alex returned to the attack to
remove L Shaw (5) to finish with 1 for 11 off 4 overs. At the other end
his father had bowled very well as he wrapped up the innings to give
Petersfield a very well deserved victory which leaves Petersfield 3s on
top of Regional North East Division 4.
Moment of the Match - Alex Squires’s superb one handed catch
Man
of the Match - the whole team who never believed the game was beyond
them and stuck to their task even when runs were being scored so freely
by Sam Perkins.

Petersfield v Locks Heath U13
Result: Locks Heath CC - Under 13 Won by 4 wickets
Date: Sun 9th Jun 2013
Start Time: 10:00
Ground: The Heath, Petersfield
With
the memory of Thursday night's game still fresh in the coaches and
players mind the team arrived at The Heath on a sunny and glorious
Sunday morning in Petersfield. Even if the kids did not appreciate the
weather and superb surroundings the spectators certainly did with great
support from both sets of parents (very nice to see)
Petersfield
won the toss and captain Gabriel Broadhurst chose to bat first
prompting questions from his swing bowlers. Broadhurst and Tommy Mathews
(4) opened the batting and put on 24 for the first wicket before Tommy
mistimed a pull to midwicket. This brought Ben Turk to the crease and
after being dropped again at midwicket main Locksheath pay by scoring 30
not out off 12 balls! including one beautiful 6 over long-on which
would have cleared the adult boundary never mind the under 13 one.
Locksheath were very glad of the 30 and retirement rule at under 13
level as Ben looked in the sort of form to destroy any bowling attack,
poor Locksheath bowler Arbor bearing the brunt of the onslaught with his
1 over going for 17 even though it was a decent over of seam up
bowling. The onslaught from Ben took the pressure off Broadhurst (30 not
out) who was struggling to get the bowling away even though his innings
was just what was required in his coaches opinion. Jack Butcher (17)
joined Broadhurst and played some solid cricket shots in partnership
with Broadhurst and then Joe Clarke (7) who looked determined to prove
to his coach that he can bat after being moved down the order to give
others a chance. Petersfield finished on 118-2 off their 20 overs.
Petersfield
got off to the perfect start with both opening bowlers Harry Richards
(1-31 off 4) and Ben Turk (1-18 off 3.3) removed 2 of the first 3
batsmen in the first 2 overs. J Hoffer (19) joined opener M Caster (30
not out) and rebuilt the innings with Caster playing some powerful
drives on both sides of the wicket. To emphasise the difference in the
fielding and intensity from Petersfield in comparison to Thursday night
(from all players) Caster hit a beautiful off drive which was travelling
at great pace and looking destined for the boundary until Tommy
Matthews swooped and stopped the ball with both hands and casually threw
the ball back to the bowler. As with all great fielders in cricket he
made the stop look insanely easy. Another good piece of cricket removed
Hofer as Joe Clarke picked the ball up under arm and got the ball in
quickly to keeper Ed Milford who removed the bails with Hofer about an
inch short. WIth leg spinner Cameron Porteous (1-7 off 2) removing Matt
Jones (1) and Joe Clarke following up his run out with a lovely delivery
to remove G Hanson (8) it looked like the pressure was going to get
Petersfield a win. Unfortunately wicket keeper M Holie (29 not out) had
other ideas and saw Locksheath home with 2.5 overs to spare with some
brutal hitting.
A very good game of cricket played in the right spirit but Locksheath ran out winners by 4 wickets.
Man of The Match for Petersfield - Ben Turk for his magnificent innings
Moment of the Match - Tommy Matthews surprise when everyone said what a wonderful piece of fielding it was.

Portsmouth and Southsea v Petersfield Under 13
Portsmouth and Southsea v Petersfield Under 13
Venue - St James
Result - Portsmouth and Southsea won by 9 wickets
The
lovely St James ground hidden away in the centre of Portsea Island
played host to a very good game of cricket between the two sides.
Captain
Matt Friend won the toss and elected to bat first to take advantage of
the beautiful evening sunlight. Petersfield got off to a good start with
openers Ben Anscombe (13) and Garbiel Broadhurst (30 not out / retired)
putting on 24 for the first wicket before Anscombe was clean bowled.
Matt Friend (24) joined Broadhurst and played some lovely straight shots
(unusual for the very strong young man), a welcome site to both
coaches. Once Broadhurst had retired Ben Turk (23) joined Friend at the
crease and showed that he is as strong as Matt with some equally
powerful shots before the run out of Turk trying to turn 1 ⅕ runs in to 2
runs with the score on 99. Turk soon followed trying to keep the
momentum going. This prompted a late order collapse with only 2 players
of the remaining 7 batsmen scoring any runs at all. It was a good
comeback from the Portsmouth bowlers who looked a bit demoralised as the
opening 4 scored their runs with Harry Watten (2 for 8) and Daniel Cox
(3-20)
Petersfield
took to the field with high hopes that their bowling attack could
defend the score of 120. This proved not to be the case as Portsmouth
and Southsea pounced on anything short to chase the score down in just
under 14 overs for the loss of 1 wicket (a run out from captain Friend
his second direct hit of the season). While the top 3 lads for
Portsmouth and Southsea (Harry Gadd, Harry Watten and John Buckamn)
batted very well they were aided with some very below par fielding from
Petersfield. The body language of the Petersfield players was not good
and it showed in their performance. Taking nothing away from the top
four batsmen who batted well or the bowlers for Portsmouth but the real
difference in the sides was the fielding.
Man of the Match as far as the coach is concerned was Matt Friend and Ben Turk

Petersfiled 3rd XI v Easton & Martyr Worthy 3rd XI
Result: Petersfield CC - 3rd XI Won by 5 wickets
Date: Sat 8th Jun 2013
Start Time: 14:00
Ground: Penns Place, Petersfield
Hampshire Cricket League Regional Division 4 NE
Toss: Easton & Martyr Worthy - 3rd XI won the toss and decided to bat
With
the weather being in marked contrast to last season with glorious blue
skies, the two sides met at Penn’s Place in Petersfield. Having lost the
toss Petersfield were asked to field on what looked like a good batting
wicket.
Easton
and Martyr lost their first wicket on 13 as Rob Straw bowled J May (4)
off an inside edge. At the other end Ben Turk (0-46 off 9 ) bowled a
beautiful line and length without any reward. Wicket Keeper and skipper M
Hall (82) was looking very assured and kept the scoreboard moving as
wickets fell at the other end with Oscar Windebank (5 for 23 off 10 )
bowling some pacey and accurate seam up deliveries which had his captain
cooing with delight at 1st slip.
Tom
Pocock (1-19 off 5 ) picked up his 2nd senior wicket with a beauty of a
ball which pitched on middle and took off stump out the ground just as
his coach, wicket keeper had asked for at the end of the previous over.
Hall kept the innings going and was joined in the middle by S Upcraft
(20) who playing a late cut to young Ben Turk seemed to get an inside
edge to a wide delivery which was taken by D Squires behind the stumps.
All the Petersfield players went up and were stunned as the umpire said
not out, the batsmen saying he would have walked if he hit it !
If
DRS had been in use the keeper would have been asking for the tv replay
immediately without asking the skipper. To add insult to injury Upcraft
then took 12 off the next 3 balls from Turk with one towering six over
wide mid on. The next over from Windebank did a lot to redress this as
he yorked Upcraft with a beauty which had off stump cartwheeling away.
With
Hall finally going after a stunning one handed return catch to
Windebank and then the same bowler removing Duff with the very next ball
the innings finished on a competitive looking 176-7.
The
Petersfield innings got off to a steady start after losing capatin
Stratford Tuke (4) in the 2nd over of the innings to young Hampshire
lady Carrick (1-42 off 9 ) who bowled some lovely away swinging
deliveries. Rob Anscombe (pushed up the order as Paddy May had to attend
casualty with his wife after she got some glass in her eye) joined John
Windebank (28 ) and put on 88 for the 2nd wicket before first Windebank
and then Anscombe (45) fell in 2 balls both playing the same shot to
young spinner Cooper (3-55 off 10 ). Ben Anscombe (4) came and went as
did Paddy May (18 ) who was looking very good until given out LBW by the
umpire even though he was outside the line of off stump and playing a
shot. The score at this point was 118-5 and 177 for victory looked a
long way off with 9 overs or so remaining.
Enter
Oscar Windebank (33 not out) and young Ben Turk (22 not out) who
punished anything short from the Easten and Martyr bowlers and played
beautifully in a match winning stand of 61 with both players playing
chanceless innings before Man of the match Oscar Windebank proceeded to
hit a massive 6 back over the bowlers head to give Petersfield their 2nd
win of the season and leave them top of Regional Division 4 NE.
Moment of the Match - Oscar Windebank’s stunning one handed return catch
Man Of the Match - Oscar Winderbank 33 runs, 5 wickets and that catch (taking after his father John ‘the cat’ Windebank)

Petersfield Sunday XI v Emsworth Sunday XI
Petersfield Sunday XI v Emsworth Sunday XI (Written by Chris Russell)
Petersfield won by 30 runs
Skipper Sampson showed his skill yet again with another win of the toss and elected not only to bat but to bat himself 1st against Emsworth on Sunday. Despite various bits of kit falling from his body, Sampson then proceeded to show us that he has learnt several new proper shots and he and Hannam gave the innings a solid start with a partnership of 55 before Jack Hannam played a horrible shot across the line and was bowled for 26. Marcus continued to play his shots until he reverted to type and was bowled by the very slow spinner from the top end for 26. Rebuilding was needed and Chris Russell scored steadily using his cut shot against the spinners in partnership with Rob Allerston after the dismissal of both Rory Newman and Liam Charles. The innings again looked in danger as with 150 on the board and 8 overs remaining both Allerston (21) and Russell (38) lost their wickets. More wickets fell until Keith Gumbe showed some great attacking shots to finish with a quick 36 whilst batting at number 9 with much help from Stephen Cooke 5 leaving Petersfield with a reasonable score of 200 from their 40 overs.

Liam Charles (1-31 off
and Keith Gumbe (3-9 off 6 including 2 maidens) opened the bowling
beautifully with Keith dismissing the 1st 3 Emsworth batsmen, one caught
and bowled and he then proceeded to secure the full house by running
out their 4th batsman with a direct hit. Nick Woodroof (0-19 off
then bowled some lovely spin in his 1st game for the club and Stephen
Cooke (1-37 off 5) bowled some adventurous slower bowling which claimed
the remaining Emsworth top order batsman. At 6 down two of the better
Emsworth batsman entered the fray and a slightly worried Skipper turned
to Rob Allerston (2-14 off 5) and Chris Russell (0-22 off 6) to stem
the tide with Russell taking one of the catches of the season diving to
his left at 1st slip to further cement his cricketing partnership with
his long haired team mate. The pair got through 11 overs for only 38
runs and the game was secured as Liam Charles and Keith Gumbe returned
to close things down with Emsworth finishing on 170 for 8 from their 40
overs.
Moment of the match - Andy Salmon turning up seeing a perfect defensive shot from skipper Marcus Sampson and asking who that was batting !
Man of the match. - Keith Gumbe with his full house of runs, wickets, a catch and a run out easily beat the duet of Russell and Allerston

Petersfield Sunday XI v Sarisbury
Petersfield turned up to the Allotment ground on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with hopes of a good game on a good pitch, only to be told that they were going to be playing on an artificial surface. Lots of grumbling and fumbling for stud removers did not help the pre match preparations at all. Petersfield lost the toss and were asked to field in the baking sun much to half the teams annoyance as it had been a long and hard night the night before !
Anyway enough moaning and gripping from the old man of the team. Petersfield opened with Andy Barnes (0-42 off 8) and Shaun Blanks (1-35 off 4) and despite the pair combining to remove J Scott for 3 the other opener D Sampson was particularly brutal on anything short as he raced away to make a hard hitting 72. He was eventually bowled around his legs by Keith Gumbe (2-74 off 10).
As I have been prompted to mention Andy Barnes again in this report he did actually bowl well with a mixture of high floating bouncing bombs and well pitched up faster balls (is that ok Andy?)
Will Rice (1-24 off 5) bowled Anderson with a beauty and Cam Clarke (1-16 off 4) removed Freddy for 21. Andy Barnes and wicket keeper Bob Wemyss combined to run out P Mershant (7) and Keith Gumbe picked up a deserved 2nd wicket as Bob Wemyss waited for the batsmen C Olipahnt to wander out his crease for a Sunday stroll and a both of gardening before stumping him.
With Sarisbury looking at a below par score Andre Mendes (48 not out) and his Son T Mendes came to the crease and started a late order onslaught similar to that of New Zealand’s a few miles down the road at the Rose Bowl.
T Mendes (85 not out) was particularly brutal on anything short or too full knocking six after six and not just to the short side of the ground. Andy Barnes and Keith Gumbe who had bowled well in their first spells had their figures destroyed by the pair, along with Dave Squires, Harry Hannam and Ed Davenport who went for a combined 67 off their 9 overs !
Sarisbury made a fine total of 263.
After a good but expensive tea (how much!) Petersfield started the chase in good order with Captain Jack Hannam (7) and Shaun Blanks (57) keeping up with the scoring rate before Jack was adjudged LBW to T Reicher. Rory Newman joined Shaun at the crease and after a slow start showed that all the work in the nets and with the bowling machine was working as he followed up his 28 not out for the 1s yesterday with a fluent 42 although he will be disappointed to get out with a fifty in sight again.
After Blanks and Newman got out a series of good cameos from Harry Hannam (30), Will Rice (15) and Andy Barnes (13) left the Petersfield side running out of batsmen if not overs as the run rate started to climb towards 8 or 9 and over. With the Sixes competition between the batsmen proving to be a damp squib as only Andy Barnes managed one from batsmen 4 to 7 with a sweetly struck flat six over mid off. When Keith Gumbe (17) came out to complete a good personal all round performance there were 7 or so overs left and despite a late order rally from him, Dave Squires (18 Not out) and some lusty blows from Ed Davenport (8 not out) Petersfield ended up on 234-9, 30 runs short of victory.
Moment of the match - Andy Barnes first delivery of the innings which had the batsmen totally bamboozled with its flight and turn (well thats how Andy saw it!)
Man of the Match - Keith Gumbe for his bowling, batting and fielding (IMHO)

Petersfield Ladies v Finchampstead
Petersfield Ladies v Finchampstead
2nd June 2013
The Petersfield ladies cricket team travelled to Finchampstead expecting to meet a professional young side and they weren’t disappointed. Once again Captain Jackson lost the toss with Finchampstead opting to bat first on another sunny Sunday. An early wicket for Emma Barrett gave Petersfield some encouragement and they may have had another had they actually appealed for the LBW decision but a superb display of attacking cricket from Hardy ably supported by the more studious Waqar threatened to take the game away from Petersfield as a big score loomed large. Petersfield had a couple more chances to break the partnership but Hardy continued to show her county under 16 status by bringing up her century in only the 20th over with her batting partner scoring only 20 of the 1st 150 runs! Petersfield continued to bowl accurately and the dismissal of Hardy for 116 by the ever willing Emma Stead gave Petersfield a route back into the game which they took with glee. Strong fielding especially by Lorna Williams who took two catches behind the stumps and by Helen Whittaker roaming in the deep combined with some accurate bowling from Wadey, Stead and the luckless Whittaker restricted Finchampstead to only 29 runs from their last 10 overs with their final score reaching 197 for 3 with opener Waqar carrying her bat for a diligent 46 not out. Nerves were aplenty as tea was taken and the three Berkshire county under 16 opening bowlers did give Petersfield plenty of problems with their pace bowling. Wickets fell with regularity however throughout the storm Petersfield opener Emma Stead once again showed her courage and technique and also looked to carry her bat only to be given last out to a doubtful caught behind for 47 with the team score on 83, a loss by 114 runs. Finchampstead were the better side however I would guess that the gap was not as big as first feared, had we taken our chances and had one player bat alongside Emma Stead we would have made a closer game of this and this gives us encouragement for the future. http://petersfield.play-cricket.com/scoreboard/scorecard.asp?id=11719437
