Petersfiled 3rd XI v Easton & Martyr Worthy 3rd XI

Result:  Petersfield CC - 3rd XI Won by 5 wickets
Date:  Sat 8th Jun 2013
Start Time: 14:00
Ground: Penns Place, Petersfield
Hampshire Cricket League Regional Division 4 NE
Toss:  Easton & Martyr Worthy - 3rd XI won the toss and decided to bat

With the weather being in marked contrast to last season with glorious blue skies, the two sides met at Penn’s Place in Petersfield. Having lost the toss Petersfield were asked to field on what looked like a good batting wicket.

Easton and Martyr lost their first wicket on 13 as Rob Straw bowled J May (4) off an inside edge. At the other end Ben Turk (0-46 off 9 ) bowled a beautiful line and length without any reward. Wicket Keeper and skipper M Hall (82) was looking very assured and kept the scoreboard moving as wickets fell at the other end with Oscar Windebank (5 for 23 off 10 ) bowling some pacey and accurate seam up deliveries which had his captain cooing with delight at 1st slip.
Tom Pocock (1-19 off 5 ) picked up his 2nd senior wicket with a beauty of a ball which pitched on middle and took off stump out the ground just as his coach, wicket keeper had asked for at the end of the previous over. Hall kept the innings going and was joined in the middle by S Upcraft (20) who playing a late cut to young Ben Turk seemed to get an inside edge to a wide delivery which was taken by D Squires behind the stumps. All the Petersfield players went up and were stunned as the umpire said not out, the batsmen saying he would have walked if he hit it !
If DRS had been in use the keeper would have been asking for the tv replay immediately without asking the skipper. To add insult to injury Upcraft then took 12 off the next 3 balls from Turk with one towering six over wide mid on. The next over from Windebank did a lot to redress this as he yorked Upcraft with a beauty which had off stump cartwheeling away.

With Hall finally going after a stunning one handed return catch to Windebank and then the same bowler removing Duff with the very next ball the innings finished on a competitive looking 176-7.

The Petersfield innings got off to a steady start after losing capatin Stratford Tuke (4) in the 2nd over of the innings to young Hampshire lady Carrick (1-42 off 9 ) who bowled some lovely away swinging deliveries. Rob Anscombe (pushed up the order as Paddy May had to attend casualty with his wife after she got some glass in her eye) joined John Windebank (28 ) and put on 88 for the 2nd wicket before first Windebank and then Anscombe (45) fell in 2 balls both playing the same shot to young spinner Cooper (3-55 off 10 ). Ben Anscombe (4) came and went as did Paddy May (18 ) who was looking very good until given out LBW by the umpire even though he was outside the line of off stump and playing a shot. The score at this point was 118-5 and 177 for victory looked a long way off with 9 overs or so remaining.

Enter Oscar Windebank (33 not out) and young Ben Turk (22 not out) who punished anything short from the Easten and Martyr bowlers and played beautifully in a match winning stand of 61 with both players playing chanceless innings before Man of the match Oscar Windebank proceeded to hit a massive 6 back over the bowlers head to give Petersfield their 2nd win of the season and leave them top of Regional Division 4 NE.

Moment of the Match - Oscar Windebank’s stunning one handed return catch
Man Of the Match - Oscar Winderbank 33 runs, 5 wickets and that catch (taking after his father John ‘the cat’ Windebank)
