Petersfield Sunday XI v Emsworth Sunday XI

Petersfield Sunday XI v Emsworth Sunday XI (Written by Chris Russell)

Petersfield won by 30 runs

Skipper Sampson showed his skill yet again with another win of the toss and elected not only to bat but to bat himself 1st against Emsworth on Sunday. Despite various bits of kit falling from his body, Sampson then proceeded to show us that he has learnt several new proper shots and he and Hannam gave the innings a solid start with a partnership of 55 before Jack Hannam played a horrible shot across the line and was bowled for 26. Marcus continued to play his shots until he reverted to type and was bowled by the very slow spinner from the top end for 26. Rebuilding was needed and Chris Russell scored steadily using his cut shot against the spinners in partnership with Rob Allerston after the dismissal of both Rory Newman and Liam Charles. The innings again looked in danger as with 150 on the board and 8 overs remaining both Allerston (21) and Russell (38) lost their wickets. More wickets fell until Keith Gumbe showed some great attacking shots to finish with a quick 36 whilst batting at number 9 with much help from Stephen Cooke 5 leaving Petersfield with a reasonable score of 200 from their 40 overs.
Liam Charles (1-31 off and Keith Gumbe (3-9 off 6 including 2 maidens) opened the bowling beautifully with Keith dismissing the 1st 3 Emsworth batsmen, one caught and bowled and he then proceeded to secure the full house by running out their 4th batsman with a direct hit. Nick Woodroof (0-19 off then bowled some lovely spin in his 1st game for the club and Stephen Cooke (1-37 off 5) bowled some adventurous slower bowling which claimed the remaining Emsworth top order batsman. At 6 down two of the better Emsworth batsman entered the fray and a slightly worried Skipper turned to Rob Allerston (2-14 off 5) and Chris Russell (0-22 off 6) to stem the tide with Russell taking one of the catches of the season diving to his left at 1st slip to further cement his cricketing partnership with his long haired team mate. The pair got through 11 overs for only 38 runs and the game was secured as Liam Charles and Keith Gumbe returned to close things down with Emsworth finishing on 170 for 8 from their 40 overs.

Moment of the match - Andy Salmon turning up seeing a perfect defensive shot from skipper Marcus Sampson and asking who that was batting !

Man of the match. - Keith Gumbe with his full house of runs, wickets, a catch and a run out easily beat the duet of Russell and Allerston
