Having
spent all week attempting to find boys and girls not playing in the
local football tournament coach Dave Squires arrived at The Heath on an
overcast morning with just 10 players (2 under 10’s). Captain Matt
Friend won the toss and immediately opted to bat on a damp green pitch.
This
decision was justified as opener Will Udy departing first ball as Ben
Turk (5 for 4 off 4 overs) found his line and length and removed the
first 3 batsmen in his first 3 overs all comprehensively bowled. Harry
Richards took a fine return catch as well as Havant were reduced to 7
for 4 wickets after 4 overs. Captain Friend (1 for 8 off 3) bought
himself on with Under 10 Oscar Amis (3-11 off 4) and the pair reduced
Havant to 18-8. Then came a fight back from Dougall Russell (7) and Ben
Longhurst (6) who batted together to reach 44 before Harry Richards
returned to break the partnership with a lovely yorker. With the ball
now wet as the drizzle arrived the bowlers had trouble holding the ball
making life very difficult for keeper Ed Milford. Oscar Amis then
accounted for Longhurst caught by Harry Richards at mid wicket to close
the Havant inning on 52.
Captain
Friend decided to change the batting order so as the game was not lost
to the rain and moved himself up to open. He then proceeded to miss time
a cover drive into the hands of Russell off Ben Longhurst (1-9 off 2).
Ben Turk (4) then pulled a high full toss out to deep backward square
leg to leave Petersfield 25-2. But with Gabriel Broadhurst (30 not out)
stroking the ball to all parts Petersfield looked good to close the game
down quickly. As Gabe was then forced to retire, due to league rules it
was left to Ed Milford (12) to push the side to 50-4 leaving Harry
Richards and Jack Butcher to score the winning runs. Mention has to made
of the fielding and catching of Havant who completely disregarded the
poor conditions to catch superbly.
Another good win which leaves Petersfield in 4th place in the league with 62 points, especially with only 10 lads playing.
