Petersfield 3s v St Cross Symodians 6s

Result:  Petersfield CC - 3rd XI Won by 3 wickets
Date:  Sat 22nd Jun 2013

Petersfield took the field after Captain James Stratford-Tuke won the toss. The Pitch looked damp after the early morning rain. Oscar Windebank (3-22 off 8 overs) opened the bowling and with his 2nd ball of the match removed opener Morgan Smith, two balls later he removed young Harry Trusser.
At the other end Ben Turk had Colin Smith caught at slip by Stratford-Tuke to leave St Cross 3 down for no runs in two overs. The next over Oscar removed Jack Soper for another duck before Ben Powell was caught at square leg by Ed Davenport leaving St Cross with less runs than wickets at 5 for 3. Captain Russell Herd (77) then came to the wicket but could not stop the wickets falling as Oscar Windebank ran out Peter Wood for 3 with a very sharp piece of fielding at short fine leg. Wicket keeper Curtis Springcote-Gubbings (3) was then superbly caught by John Windebank as he seemed to hang in the air as he flung an arm up at short cover, he then ensured he did not drop the catch as he swivelled in the air to keep his elbows off the ground. A piece of skill that would not look out of place in the ICC Champions Trophy.

At this point captain Russell really took a liking to anything short and with Mike Glogg (8) and Andy Burgess (13) staying with him they managed to push the score along 61-8 and then 100-9 as Russell had 90% of the strike. Alex Squires (1-19 off 3) and Dave Squires (1-25 off 3) took the brunt of the hitting but picked up the wickets of Glogg and Burgess between them.
With the score a lot more than captain Stratford-Tuke had wanted he turned to Ben Turk (3-10 off 6) and he finally removed Russell lbw to leave St Cross on 120 all out in 29 overs.

Petersfield were disappointed with the final score having conceded 96 for the last 3 wickets but credit has to go St Cross for not crumbling under the very good fielding and bowling from Petersfield. Petersfield would have taken that score before the game started.

WIth some good opening bowling from St Cross, Petersfield had a slow start with runs very difficult to come by. James Stratford-Tuke (3 off 32 balls) and Eoin Seger (8 off 24) both got out in similar fashion trying to put away wide deliveries from Ben Powell (1-10 off 10 with 7 maidens) and Harry Trusser (2-19 off 5) respectively. This left Petersfield on 38-2 off 21 overs with John Windebank (26 retired hurt) steadfast at the other end until one quick single too many pulled his hamstring forcing him off the field. Paddy May (8) and Oscar Windebank (4) came and went and with the run rate rising Petersfield were 59-4 off 25 overs and wobbling. Ben Turk (38) was riding his luck a bit with some lofted shots not going to hand but with his Under 13 coach Dave Squires (11) the pair put on 34 in 8 overs running 2 or 3 threes before Squires missed timed a pull off Morgan Smith (4-48 off 10) leaving Petersfield within sight of the victory target of 121 with 8 overs left.

Young Ben continued to play his shots with teammate Joe Mayall (6) who broke his bat trying to score the runs required. At this stage Petersfield had reached 104. Ed Davenport stayed with Ben until the young man spoilt his innings trying to hit the winning runs off Smith to be bowled with just 2 runs required to win with 4 overs left. Ollie Simpson (1 not out) who had bowled well without any luck earlier in the day joined Davenport (9 not out) who hit a lovely cover drive and ran 2 thinking he had won the game only to be told Ollie had not grounded his bat and was one short. Ed then hit the winning 4 in the 40th over. The win leaves Petersfield unbeaten and 2nd in the table by ½ a point.

Man of The Match - Ben Turk for another superb all round performance
Moment of the Match - John Windebank’s acrobatic superb catch
