Petersfield Under 11s Crowned League Champions
Petersfield U11A Cricket Team emulated the England team and were crowned Champions of the South-East Hants Cricket League this week. A long season reached its climax in the last game of the season on a sunny evening at The Heath. Petersfield had beaten long time leaders Portsmouth the previous week to leapfrog them into second place a point behind first placed Hambledon. A win over visitors Burridge was required to secure the champions spot. Burridge won the toss and put Petersfield in to bat, a positive display throughout the batting line-up saw a useful total of 137 posted in the 20 overs. Burridge openers then started well in reply and at the halfway mark were still up with run rate, however strength in bowling depth, a feature of the season meant the visitors could not maintain this momentum and the innings closed on 97.
Coach Simon Griffin said “It’s been a superb effort from the team, after a rain affected early season at the end of June we were second from bottom of the league. We then went on a fantastic run to win all our remaining games, and clinched the title on the last day of the season”
Chair James Stratford-Tuke said “this fantastic result is testament to a great youth set up that has been established at the club. Tuition by qualified coaches from age 7 upwards means we are now competing with and beating the strongest clubs in the region such as Havant and Portsmouth. Petersfield players are well represented at District and County level and this indicates a great future for the club”
