Under 11b v Liss
Dear All,
Congratulations to all involved in tonights win against Liss, it was an excellent performance against a team with some older players. The batting was solid and considered, particular mention to Benn D and Luke who faced a fast and accurate opening bowler and also to Alec for some staunch defence. There were some great attacking shots played by both Toms and Ben R-V; it was a very solid batting performance, you all played the ball on merit and contributed.
The bowling was also very good, particularly Tom E, Charlie, Tom S-T, Callum and both Bens. The last two overs were particularly tight and Tom E and Charlie should take huge credit for the way they performed under pressure against a talented batsman.
Above all I was really impressed by the fielding display: Carter's catch was excellent and at a crucial stage, and Jude was tidy and persevered in an unfamiliar role as wicket keeper and there were many fine instances of ground fielding but what stood out was the team spirit and support to each other. Great stuff, well done to everyone!!
Celebrity cricket match
Dear PCC Members, players, wet weather support team heroes et al
Just a quick line to add my thanks to everyone who took part in Sunday’s game both on and off pitch. Special thanks should go to the bucket and towel team, without whom no play would have been possible. The Rose Bowl cancelled play on Sunday due to standing water,,, here in Petersfield, with no specialist equipment or resources, a dozen or so people worked solidly for 5 hours and made the pitch playable. The dedication and determination of a few club heroes meant the show went on. I haven’t got all their names to mention properly here, but they deserve a group photo up on the wall with a brass plaque commemorating their achievement!
I got in from London late last night and rushed off a post match press release to get into the Petersfield Post this week. Both Andy and Marcus were fast asleep so my apologies that the facts and figures aren’t as full, or accurate as they could be. Richard (surname unknown) scored a glorious 50 runs for Petersfield before retiring and was missed a mention in the release as I didn’t have his full name, my apologies monsieur. Due to lack of space may other fine performances, like Matt Salmon’s superb catch, were also missed out. The piece needed to be on Graeme’s desk early this morning to make this week’s issue so stuff was missed that should have been in there.
The piece, which was nevertheless quite long, focussed on the effort to prepare the pitch, chairman Nick Blakstad’s glorious 6, the rather barmy Marquis of Queensbury bet reconstruction with BBC Radio 4, and the final result.
The comics lost by one run AGAIN this year, making the last few overs wonderfully tense and exciting. The commentary from comics on the balcony throughout the 2 nd innings was hilarious once again, too many moments of pure gold there to count, or to tell those of you who weren’t there what it was all about. You had to be there,,, a pity more of you didn’t make it along to enjoy yourselves by joining in with the fun.
Everyone there had a great time, though the spectator numbers were drastically down from last year. This is possibly down to the rain earlier/overnight for the most part? Though the morning was dry and the afternoon was glorious sunshine with only a dozen brief drops of rain around 4pm.
Talking to Marcus and the comics after the match we’re all up for doing it again next year, subject to committee approval of course (doffs cap to the powers that be). We’ll keep you posted as to when we’ll be doing it in 2013 and really hope that more of you will come and support what I think is turning into a highlight of our cricketing season.
Best wishes

Breaking News
Dear PCC members & friends
We have a special update to announce re the match this Sunday 24th June at the Heath Grounds with Rufus Hound, etc.
Tim
FitzHigham, the celeb team captain, has contacted me today and asked if
we’d be prepared to take part in a world record style attempt in
conjunction with BBC Radio 4 !!!
In short, it looks like we’ll be making the attempt during the break for tea and it’s roughly the following...
The 4th
Duke or Queensbury once had a bet that he could get a ball to travel 50
miles in an hour. Strange I know, but he was and probably still is the
most famous gambler in history. He got the best 20 cricketers of his age
together and they threw the ball between them and calculated the
distance the ball had travelled over the hour.
Tim
has had a friendly comics wager with his “nemesis” Alex Horn that he
can match and beat this. So, what we’ll do is set up a measured circle
around the ground and during the break use players from both sides, and
probably other club members who want to join in too (like a tag team
event so players can go in for rest and tea), to try and beat this
record/bet. We’ll throw the ball around the ground during the hour for
tea and see how far we get it to go. I’m picking up a special measuring
wheel from the council this afternoon and officials will be there to
make sure all is done correctly. Folk from BBC Radio 4 will be there to
interview Tim, and others involved. (wear your suit Andy, you may be on
Radio!)
It’s
a wonderful opportunity for the club to get national coverage on BBC
Radio 4, and to take part in recreating one of history’s toughest and
undoubtedly strangest bets.
As
far as I’m aware no real money is actually involved in this wager and
no animals will be harmed during the recording of this event. We do
encourage all PCC members to gamble responsibly, if at all, and to
ensure all fluffy bunnies and other wild creatures are kept safe during
matches....
Weather
for the weekend is looking better and better. Yes, there may be a bit
of rain on Sunday morning, but the afternoon is looking mostly clear and
sunny. Marcus is hoping to cover the square on Saturday night to
protect it from the worst of the rain so overall we’re looking very
positive for things to go ahead.
Please
tell all your friends and family and do come along on the afternoon.
Last year’s match was a such wonderful event and we’re hoping that this
year will be even better supported by all of you. Even if you can only
swing by for half an hour on your way to or from somewhere it will still
help make the day a success. The atmosphere will be one of relaxed,
friendly fun, we’ll have comics giving hilarious commentary of the match
as it progresses. The celebs and comics will also be practicing in the
nets during the game and many of them, including Rufus Hound, enjoyed
being bowled at by all comers last year, from 6 years old and up.
It’s going to be a truly great afternoon and we really look forward to seeing you there.
Best wishes

Petersfield 3s v Herriad 3s
On a very damp pitch Petersfield 3s lost the toss and were put into bat by the Herriad captain.
Petersfield openers Stratford-Tuke (17) and Eoin Seager (28) got Petersfield innings off to a
steady start but both fell quickly after the good start attempting to push the scoring along.
Herriads spinner Jefferies (4 for 20) was getting the ball to come off the wicket so slowly that
Petersfield middle order all fell cheaply to the spinner with shots they will not be happy with but
the pitch was a real pudding and explained the use of the edges and wrong side of their bats.
John Windebank (11 not out) and colt Josh Bird (2 not out) making his debut in senior league
cricket both found it hard to score runs with some accurate bowling leaving Petersfield 103-6 off
there 42 overs.
During the interval the rain arrived and with the wind conditions were more akin to rugby
match in October than cricket in June. Jack Hannam (2 for 4 off 40) took a wicket in his first over
before he had to retire hurt with a neck strain leaving him double up in pain. Petersfield made
steady progress in removing the Herriad batsmen and keeping a tight reign on the scoring with
Will Jamieson (2-36) bowled his spin very (alot less than he deserved bowling with a very wet
ball and seam). He was very ably supported by Matt Salmon bowling 10 overs straight through
taking 4 wickets for 20 runs with 3 maidens, one a wicket maiden.
At this point an unlikely victory seemed on the cards as Herriad were reduced to 67-7 but
2 overs of wayward bowling (caused by the now sopping ball) allowed J Lawes (29) taking
advantage meaning that Herriad were within site of victory before Mark Holloway took his
( consolation) wicket in his only over of the match when Laws was removed trying to hit the
winning runs over 'cow corner'
Unfortunately as it usually is in these rain affected matches the toss was all important and
Captain James Stratford-Tuke will be hoping to find a 4 leaf clover or rabbits foot to change his
luck at the toss. Special mentions for Matt Salmon for his fantastic bowling efforts and 14 year
old Josh Bird who showed that the club have a lot of talent coming through the colts ranks. The
club look to have a bright future ahead of it.

Petersfield IIs vs Rowledge IIIs
Petersfield IIs vs Rowledge IIIs
Petersfield IIs notched up their second win of the season, beating Rowledge IIIs by 5 wickets at a wet and blustery Heath.
Batting first, Rowledge’s openers, Jones (26) and Bradbury (29) batted solidly, putting on 51 for the first wicket. However Petersfield’s bowlers stuck to their task, taking wickets at regular intervals and not allowing their opponents to build any momentum.
Ibrahim Dar led the way with 3 for 26, well supported by Shapley (2 for 14) and debutant Gumbe (2 for 29). Stand-in skipper Blanks and Squires picked up a wicket apiece, as Rowledge finished on 150 off their 42 overs.
The weather closed in as Petersfield began their reply, the rain quite heavy at times. But the players battled on, with Spencer (22), Blanks (34) and Shapley (22) making light of the difficult conditions. With opener Alex Thomas (39 n.o.) anchoring one end, ‘Field overhauled the Rowledge total with 11 overs to spare to complete a comfortable win.

Message from the Club
Anyone for cricket?
We’d love to play!
We’ve never had a season like this – thus far, across all the Colts teams, we have played 13 out of a scheduled 41 games. Whilst we always expect to lose a few games to the weather, we don’t expect to lose 68%.
At this stage of the season we’d have expected all our teams to have played 5/6 games each but this is how it stands:-
U9A 2
U9B 2
U11A 2
U11B 2
U13 1
U15 2
U17 0
U11 Girls 1
U13 Girls 1
Not only that, we have also had to cancel countless training sessions, often at short notice. It might be me, but the rain does seem to fall on Mondays and Fridays!
It’s not a lot different for the senior teams, who lost virtually all the pre-season fixtures, and have played approximately 50% of their fixtures.
We’re sure that you and your boys/girls are as frustrated as we are – it’s such a short season anyway; and we had such a good preparation with the indoor sessions being so well attended across the board, that we were really looking forward to this season. We do appreciate your on-going patience and support - if there is a sport more susceptible to bad weather we’ve yet to find it. Not only is it difficult (and not much fun) to play and train when it’s wet, it’s nigh on impossible to prepare a wicket to play on whilst the ground is wet, and its been wet a lot this year.
Some of you will know that we have a very old artificial strip down at Penns Place, which is beyond repair. Our fund raising focus this year is to be able to replace it – it will cost around £5,000 to do so but when its in place, it will give us more options and enable more games to played after recent rainfall.
We hope we will get some decent weather soon but keep the faith, the cricket we have been able to play has been very encouraging, with improvements evident at all age levels. The Managers and Coaches are frantically trying to rearrange the postponed fixtures, albeit we will struggle to get them all in before the summer holidays.
In the end, we might just end up having to write off 2012; however we’re already planning for 2013 and can look forward with increased confidence.
As is common with a lot of sports clubs, the cricket can only be played as a result of the efforts of a small minority of very willing volunteers and Petersfield Cricket Club is no exception. We’re always looking for new blood: parents who are willing to volunteer to help this continue. A number of our current volunteers will be standing down soon as their own children have moved through the Colts section and into senior cricket and beyond.
Best wishes

U11b Win v Portsmouth & Southsea
Played at Penns
Result: Won
We enjoyed some sun for the first time in ages and actually managed to get a match played! Not only that we won for the first time this season although we did take a technical win over Liss earlier in the season after they cancelled at the last minute.
We batted first and set a target of 268. There was a good overall performance and although we lost four wickets, three of them were due to run outs. We need to work on that aspect of the game as there were also some runs not taken that could have been! Top scorer, other than the extras (!), was Charlie Gaisford with 5.
Portsmouth & Southsea batted next and it was pretty much neck and neck until the last couple of overs. We bowled pretty tightly and the fielding was good with great keeping by George Wickens and generally some impressive backing up. Special mention to Tom Edsall and Lewes Breedon who both managed a maiden each and to our most accurate bowler Oscar Maclean who bowled two overs for 2 runs and a wicket.
Overall it was a good team effort and the match was played with a good but competitive spirit so congratulations to all the boys.

Petersfield Under 11a v Burridge U11
Well nice to see the sun for a change. Petersfield won the toss and put Burridge in.
Despite Burridge only scoring 18 runs with the bat, the lack of practice showed with 50 extras!! But chasing 69 to win we were confident.
But the pitch was not providing any bounce and the ball got lower and lower....
William hit the first two full tosses for 4 and Ossian also hit a lovely front foot drive for 4, but with the next ball dying on him, he was bowled. Two great catches accounted for Charlie and Jack and we were all out 16 runs short with two overs left.
The pitch was really slow and had very little bounce, which got less as the game wore on. Very difficult to bat though we did score more runs with the bat than Burridge.
We need plenty of sunshine to hopefully give the pitch some life.

Petersfield U14 Girls v Locks Heath
Petersfield
U14 Girls v Locks Heath
10th
June 2012
It was cold and wet and
despite dominating ¾ of the game on Sunday the older of the
Petersfield girl’s teams fell 5 runs short of the target set by
Locks Heath in their league match on Sunday.
Petersfield won the toss
and elected to field and were quickly amongst the wickets. Some fine
hitting from the Locks Heath and Hampshire District Captain moved the
score along before Emma Barrett bowled her with the 1st
ball of her spell of leg spin bowling. Locks Heath struggled to move
the scoreboard after that dismissal and some excellent tight bowling
from Katie Nolan and Laura Bates frustrated the opposing team. The
late introduction of Olivia Wadey, who is arguably the quickest of
our strike bowlers, produced two more late wickets with both
dismissals hitting the top of off stump beautifully. Locks Heath
finished with an average 61 for the loss of 5 wickets from their 16
overs.
Petersfield started well,
with Katie Nolan and the hard hitting Olivia Wadey racing along to 30
for 1 from the 1st five overs and all looked set for a
Petersfield win however the cheap loss of the middle order and a
disastrous run out of the Petersfield Captain Jess Grange sung the
game towards the visitors. Izzy Whitley played well and kept the
scoreboard moving but with 10 runs needed from the final over
Petersfield eventually fell 5 runs short.
As
this was our first hard ball game of the season we should take
encouragement from how well we played and particularly how well we
bowled and fielded. Olivia Wadey both top scored with 12 and led the
bowling with 2 wickets for 3 runs but important bowling contributions
were made by all of the bowlers and from Ella Williams who kept
wicket well throughout the game.

Petersfiled 3s v Ashford Hill
On a sunny but windy afternoon Petersfield 3s were looking to build on there good win the previous week and beat Ashford Hill at Penn's Place. Petersfield lost the toss and were inserted by Ashford Hill, with the pitch a bit sticky and the ball not coming on to the bat Petersfield got off to a solid start with James Stratford-Tuke (11) and Eoin Seager(25), after the two openers got out to Monger (3-24) Ollie Shapley (27) and Gabriel Broadhurst (15) carried on the good work work of the openers before Monger removed Shapely. John Windebank (1) was unlucky to be given out LBW and Calvin Boyd (6) trying to push the run rate up supporting Bob Weymes (36 not out). Ben Cox (11 not out) came in a played a couple of lovely straight drives to push the score up to 159-6.
After tea Simon Dodd (1-29) removed the opener with a lovely ball taking out the top of off stump. This bought Gundry (36) to the crease who showed he is a better batsmen than a number 11 where he normally bats with a 6 and 4 fours over cow corner before being caught off Shapely (3-11 off 7) by the keeper trying the same shot. Once he was removed the bowlers of Petersfield took complete control with Dave Squires (1-9 off 7) and Calvin Boyd (3-9 off 6. 1) keeping a tight reign on the scoring. With Bob Weymes running out Buckner with a superb throw from square leg with only one stump to aim at the game was over with Petersfield winning by 90 runs. A mention for Ben Cox who despite bowling to the dangerous Gundry posted figures of 0-18 off his 8 overs, deserved a wicket or two with some lovely inswinging bowling.
All in all a very good performance from Petersfield after losing a few players due to call ups to 2s and 1s, the captain James Stratford-Tuke will be pleased with the way the team are progressing this season, especially with how the colts are rising to the challenge of playing league cricket

Sarisbury V Petersfield Sunday
Prepare yourself for the unofficial Sunday XI match report by Jack "Shakespeare" Hannam.
Petersfield Sunday side travelled to Sarisbury hoping to bounce back from last weeks defeat to Churt. With no toss required, stand in skipper Jack Hannam agreed to bat first boasting a batting line up oozing quality.
Sadly jack showed little sign of this quality and skied a frustrated cover drive caught one handed deep in the outfield to the surprise of the fielder. This brought Henry Austin to the crease in his newly promoted batting position. Despite a massive edge behind The Hen stood firm hoping the umpire had missed the huge deflection from his battered Bradbury. This was not the case as a crooked finger was raised and Austin headed back to the hutch.
Enter Andy Barnes in what can only be described as a made to measure set of whites where not an inch of material was wasted over his frame. Jaws dropped as Barnes first ball yielded no runs. Normal service was soon resumed as the next 3 deliveries went for 16. This proved to be the catalyst for Will William Rice who suddenly remembered the destructive opening batsman he was.
The party began as the pair added 80 runs from the next 9 overs. Rice bringing up his 50 with a sumptuous pull and Barnes falling just short for 47. Harry Hannam came and went before Rice fell for a classy 71. "Ian" Seager pushed hard singles, much to the disgust of the steely eyed veteran Dave Squires. Dave duly obliged with some tenacious running before falling for 8 (having run for 10 byes before getting off the mark). After putting his body through sheer hell, skipper Hannam gave Dave an ecg which he passed much to the delight of his comrades.
Sadly for Simon "Dirty Dog" Dodd, his innings was short lived as the little friction offered from plimsoles resulted in him slipping out of his crease to be stumped for a duck.
With the opening pair of Doddy and Mark "Rule book" Holloway the home side were in for a torrid time. Unfortunately the six inch bounce of Dodd and missile like Holloway darts were to the liking of opener Critchy. Holloway drew first blood with a smart stumping from Seagar. Debutant Cam Clarke tested the halfway mark of the wicket well with some short bowling and got reward in the 14th with a wicket.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Harry Hannam provided two mouth watering long hops which soon disappeared over the ropes. Regaining composure he picked up an LBW decision as the limp wrist of Liam Charles rasied a battle scarred finger. With Critchy powering his way to 50 Hannam turned to his "go-to guy" Rice with the instruction "get him out". Rice happily obliged by bowling Critch and was swiftly removed from the attack. Needing the run rate reduced, the evergreen Dave Squires was introduced proving a master stroke as he bowled six overs, 1-15. Fantastic figures in the context of the game.
With 9 required from the fnal over Rice dismissed Andrews for 9 runs. 1 ball remaining, 2 to win. With the draw not an option the field was pulled in. A late swinging ball was clipped off the legs past the despairing Clarke giving Sarisbury the win. Despite the loss, a great game of cricket played in good spirit throughout.
Batting MOM: Will Rice
Bowling MOM: Dave Squires

Petersfield U15s vs US Portsmouth
The U15s put in a decent display against an experienced Portsmouth United Services side, fighting doggedly before going down to defeat by 44 runs.
’Field’s opening bowlers Straw (2 for 16) and Squires (1 for 11) were immediately among the wickets, reducing US to 17 for 3 at one point in impressive opening spells, length and line bang on the money.
However a 4th wicket partnership between Birch (28) and Cussack (35) put on 74 runs and took the game away from Petersfield. The lads, though, stuck to their task, picking up late wickets, including 2 in 2 balls from debutant Dan May.
Despite some sensible batting for the second match in a row from Bird (19) and Anscombe (28 n.o.), the US total of 131 remained out of reach as the U15s finished on 87 for 7.
Again this was a good effort from our U15s, who are developing a very supportive team spirit. Better running between the wickets and cutting down on the wides will mean the side can become even more competitive as the season unfolds.
