Indoor U16s maintain 100 % record

Another maximum points win for the lads on Sunday. A run-out on the last ball of the Portsmouth innings gave us all six bowling points (following catch of the season from Ben A).
A faultless, chance-less chase secured all the batting points and the win.

Petersfield Cricket Club awarded £75,000 of funding from Sport England through Inspired Facilities.

Some of you will be aware that last year the club decided to apply to Sports
England through Inspired Facilities for an award to modernise The Heath
pavilion, provide weatherproofing equipment (covers and water hog) and carryout
work to improve drainage of the ground.  The funding has been secured for the
covers etc and they were delivered during the season, the drainage work funding
is in place and we are talking to contractors.  Sport England has now confirmed
that we have received a £75,000 award through Inspired Facilities! (Inspired
Facilities is a programme with a share of National Lottery funding from Sport
England which has contributed towards the sporting legacy of the London 2012
Olympic and Paralympic games). The award is for the modernisation of the
Heath pavilion is part of an overall project cost of £101,895 (this includes
purchase of equipment, including the water hog, white goods and covers etc, the
difference has already been raised or we have identified where the money can
come from).

We were informed at the end of last month but the news has been embargoed to
allow Sport England to maximise the publicity, we have now sent out a press
release.

While we put a huge amount of work into the submission it is a very competitive
process and the odds were always against us, to get an award is brilliant, to get
exactly what we were asking for is beyond our wildest dreams. My thanks to
Carolyn Warne and those who provided information, particularly Mike Freeston
and Nicky May, often at short notice with tight deadlines; those who have
provided partnership funding towards the overall project; for the support we have
received including the town, district and county councils, the ECB and Hampshire
Cricket Board as well as Sport England; and those through our survey helped us
scope our vision and application to Sport England to make this possible.

This is fantastic news and very significant for the club, it should give us the ability
to put the club on to a new level providing high quality cricket and facilities for
Petersfield.  We will now be working hard to deliver this project as soon as we
can.

Inspired facilities press release

Kind regards,

James Stratford-Tuke.

Under 16s start with indoor season win over Havant Cc

Hoping to avoid a repeat of the opening defeat of the summer, Petersfield were ruthless in an 80 run win over Havant.

Broadhurst (38) and Anscombe (39) gave a masterclass in indoor batting, milking the decent Havant attack for three after three without a single pot-shot at the back wall.
With the openers both retired by the end of the fifth over, Turk (5) and Campbell (4) looked to keep the score moving but we're both cleverly caught off the netting by C. Dean in Havant's best over.
Clarke (17) and Milford (22) came together at 76/2 and pushed on relentlessly in the middle overs, with Milford leaning into three straight 4s before playing around a straight one.
With Clarke the third batter to fall to a Dean catch off the side-netting, the returning Broadhurst and Anscombe maintained the momentum. Broadhurst was run out in the last over, but Anscombe held his end, and continued the high scoring rate until he too was run out off the last ball of the innings.
Petersfield 159/6 (12 overs).

Facing a daunting total, Havant were immediately pinned back by Turk (2 overs, 10/0) with some rapid dot-ball bowling.
Campbell (2 overs, 29/0) matched Turk for pace and aggression but fell victim to some tight wide calls. Sharp fielding saw Udy (9) run out in the 4th over.
Clarke (2.4 overs, 18/2) and Anscombe (2 overs, 18/1) kept the shackles on while F. Steel (27) valiantly attempted to hold the Havant innings together.
Petersfield were sensing blood, though, and a lightning, diving deflection onto the non-striker's stumps by Clarke off his own bowling saw C. Dean (0) run out. (After the game in a show of hands of those who thought it was deliberate, Clarke lost the vote 5-1).
Campbell embodied the urgency of the Petersfield fielding when he picked up and threw, giving L. Dean (0) no chance of regaining safety after setting off for an unlikely run.
An entertaining caught-and-bowled saw Anscombe make an excellent one-handed parry away to his right before an interminable series of juggles ended with him finally grasping the ball somewhere around extra cover, M. Carter (1) being the eventual victim.
F. Steel returned to be confidently snaffled at point by Turk, and Clarke trapped D. Russell (13) lbw off the next ball to seal the win, and leave himself on a hat-trick for the next game.
Broadhurst showed his growing maturity as a skipper with a thoughtful and proactive captaincy. The bold placement of three fielders on the off-side in the opening overs showed great imagination and a well-placed confidence in his bowlers.
Havant 79/6 (8.4 overs).

With more to come from Petersfield in both the batting and bowling departments, this early win bodes very well for an excellent indoor season. Well done lads!

Paul Clarke, 27/9/2015.

Last game of the season so close and yet so far

Well the last game of the season has been played and yet again we were beaten by one guy who was too good to be playing on a Sunday (story of the whole season)

Some notable performances today despite the defeat with James Stratford-Tuke getting 3-26 (including the lad who got 81) off 7 overs. Dan May 3-23 off 7 including 2 in 2 balls and Adam Childs picking up 3 wickets for 4 runs of 1.4 overs. We battled back from 122-1 to 162 all out as the Sunday lads kept going brilliantly despite the onslaught from a player who plays Saturday 3 levels above our 1s, who by the way was out plumb off Nigel Straws 2 ball as the ball would have removed middle and middle with a bit of middle to boot.

We then move on to the batting which started well with Oscar Windebank knocking 22 off 10 balls to put on 31 for the first wicket. Unfortunately we then had the issue with the same player taking 4-4 off 6 overs as he took advantage of the sun being directly behind his arm as he removed John Childs, Tom Stratford-Tuke, John Windebank and James Stratford-Tuke leaving Petersfield 5 down for 55.

The below picture accurately describes the issue ;-)

Some very stubborn resistance from the lower order got The Sunday side up to 121 with skipper Dave Squires scoring his highest ever score 42 with a pitch proving harder and harder to bat on.

Apart from the sun controversy and the one player this was very close contest despite the 41 run defeat.

Thanks to everyone that has played for me this season it has been a pleasure to play with you and to captain you all

Colts Presentation and Fun day details

Dear All

I am pleased to be able to confirm the arrangements for the final 2 colts cricket events of the summer. I hope everyone had a really enjoyable time training and playing for the club and to celebrate our summer of cricket we now have the presentation evening and the colts fun day coming up.

Presentation Evening
The presentation evening is on Friday 4th Sept at Petersfield Rugby Club. As with last year we are splitting the event in two but with less of a gap between the 2 sessions.

The Girls, the Under 7s and Under 9s will be at 6pm

The Under 11s, Under 13s, Under 15s and the indoor teams will be at 7:15pm

(the presentations for the U19s will be at the senior event the week after)

It would be really good if we could get a good turnout and it would be helpful if you could let your coaches know whether you and the colts are attending or not (please can U11s let me know).

Fun-day
The colts fun-day is taking place on Saturday 5th September at the Heath Cricket Ground. This is always a really good day and gives a chance for the parents to pit their skills against the colts (if I use my very selective memory I can't remember the colts beating the parents in any of the matches). The bar and BBQ should be running and it's good fun. Please let your coach know whether your child will be attending. Coaches will also be looking for parents to play in the game (any standard will do) and if you really don't want to play they will also want a volunteer or two to help run the BBQ. The approximate timings are as below - please be ready to play at the allotted time (again could U11s please let me know)

Girls – 9:15-11:00
U7 – 11:15-12:15
U9 – 12:30-2:00
U11 – 2:15-3:45
U13 – 4:00 -6:00

There is no U15 / U17 game this year because the U15s are playing their league title decider at Portsmouth & Southsea.

Thanks to everyone for their support this year and I hope you have enjoyed the season. The coaches now have a few months off but we are making plans for the indoor nets which will be starting in January. If anyone would like to get involved next year (e.g. helping with coaching, scoring or managing a team please do let me know

Thanks

United Services vs Petersfield 1s

Petersfield slipped to defeat against United Services, losing by 34 runs in their County Division 2 encounter at Burnaby Road in Portsmouth.

Batting first on a firm wicket with a tinge of green, Services got off to a flyer. Indeed Field did well to peg the league high-flyers back to 55 for 2 and later 69 for 4, with Barnes (2-25 off 10 overs) instrumental in applying the squeeze and removing the dangerous May for 36.

However Robbins (52) and Hounsome (52*) came together in a vital 92-run partnership for the fifth wicket, helping to propel Services to a healthy-looking 206 for 7 after 45 overs. Nevertheless Petersfield at the interval were pretty satisfied to have restricted their opponents to that score after the early flurry of runs.

It might have been better still but for a few dropped catches and some loose fielding on the lush outfield, the grass being grown in preparation for the United States rugby team using the ground as their training base for the forthcoming Rugby World Cup.

Petersfield started solidly in reply and were not far behind the rate at drinks. However Services’ slow bowlers Easton and Joy gradually tightened their grip and wickets fell as Field chased the game, with no fewer than seven players caught in the ring or the deep. Opener Thomas top scored with 36.

The defeat means that hopes of promotion were all but dashed for this season but the side will aim to finish a successful term on a high next week in their final league fixture against Andover IIs at the Heath.

Local derby win for Petersfield 2s over Steep 2s

Petersfield II team successfully overcame local rivals Steep II by 82 runs at the The Heath to
gain maximum points  and virtually ensure at least second place in the league.  Their last
fixture is next week at bottom placed Hollybank, so maximum points are essential if they are
to have any chance of winning it.

On a scorching day Petersfield skipper, Richard Stephens won the toss and mercifully elected
to bat.  Openers Will Rice and Toby Austen started cautiously with the ball keeping  low from
one end.  Gradually both players got the measure of the Steep attack and Rice in particular
began to pepper the boundaries all around the ground.  By the first drinks interval on 14
overs the two had put on 90 with Rice on 59, but soon after he fell to a spectacular diving
catch on the boundary by former Petersfield Colt, Josh Bird.  His innings  was an object
lesson in how to play on a slow and at times, inconsistent wicket.  Steep then resorted to the
unusual sight of an all-leg spin attack from Martin and Cosgrove.  They successfully slowed
the scoring before Cosgrove bowled a hung-over Austen for a patient 24.  Chris Russell was
then joined by Ben Anscombe, but both batsmen became almost becalmed with the scoring
rate dropping dramatically.  Gradually both began to work the ball around picking up the
momentum before Anscombe was caught for 24.

Russell was now getting on top of the
bowling and dominated the rest of the innings to finish unbeaten on 72  with the Petersfield
total on 210 for 6.  After Rice’s onslaught the total was a little disappointing but nonetheless,
a challenging target for the visitors.

Steep started badly against good accurate seam bowling from Oscar Windebank and Nickey
Caddick.  Burke was well-caught by Rice off a skier in Windebank’s first over and Ellis followed
lbw in his next with the total on 4. Callingham and Dale slowly began to rebuild the innings
before Dale perished for 13.  Chris, Russell and Chris Wood replaced the seamers and
continued to restrict the scoring bowling 12 overs for under 30 runs, with Russell picking up
two wickets.  Callingham (55) continued to offer lone resistance but was joined by Yates and
they put on 32 runs at a good rate until Callingham was well caught by keeper Andy Butcher.

When Yates was lbw the Steep resistance was virtually over, although Josh Bird entertained
with some powerful boundaries before Frank Straw (3-14) and Richard Stephens (2-11)
mopped up the tail.

Petersfield: 210-6 (C Russell 72*, W Rice 59, B Anscombe 24, T Austen 24: E.Ellis 3-37)

Steep 128 (T Callingham 55, N Yates 17, J Bird 17:  F Straw 3-14, O Windebank 3-25, R

Stephens 2-11, C Russell 2-24)

3s make it 3 wins on the trot with 9 wicket win

Fixture Details

Type :
League: Hampshire Cricket League Regional Dvision 4 South East - 2015

Date :
Saturday 22nd August 2015

Petersfield wonby 9 wickets

The last home game of the season for the 3s was played on one of the hottest days of the year.
Petersfield skipper James Stratford-Tuke won the toss and decided to bowl first with parts of the Penns Place pitch a tad damp.

Openers Ben Cox 4-30 and Dan May 1-16 tore through Farehams top order reducing them to 8-4 off 10 overs as Petersfield bowled and fielded superbly led by Rory Newman in the covers who was brilliant  all day.
First change bowlers Omar Iqbal 2-20 and Dave Squires 1-15 kept the scoring rate  down to a minimum with tight and accurate bowling. Ed Milford then backed them up with a very tight spell of 5 overs 1-12 (remarkably including 5 wides) although he did drop the final batsmanSa off his own bowling) Omar Iqbal returned to bowl Tucker (55) in the 37th over.

All but 2 of the wickets were bowled with the other 2 being caught by the returning Dave Squires who took both catches with consummate ease at mid-on and slip, taking the slip catch in front of his skipper (much to James' annoyance ;-))

After tea Petersfield set about the total of 94 and as per last week were led to victory by Omar Iqbal (44 not out) and Rory Newman (41). The pair made batting look easy as Farehams bowlers could not emulate their East Hampshire counterparts and bowl with any control. Young Ty Neville 1-21 off 3 picked up Rory's wicket as the young opener tried to plant him over the deep mid wicket boundary for another 6. Dave Squires (7 not out)  surprisingly pushed up the order came in at 63-1 and stood at the other end as Omar Iqbal carried on his good form (44 last week as well) to finish the innings with another on drive for 4 in the 16th over.

A good win for Petersfield 3s who made it 3 wins in 3 weeks to move off the bottom of the league and are now 11th.

Man of the match - Ben Cox who was very unlucky not to get a 5 fer

Petersfield CC under 11 report

Petersfield Under 11s Crowned League Champions

Petersfield U11A Cricket Team emulated the England team and were crowned Champions of the South-East Hants Cricket League this week. A long season reached its climax in the last game of the season on a sunny evening at The Heath. Petersfield had beaten long time leaders Portsmouth the previous week to leapfrog them into second place a point behind first placed Hambledon. A win over visitors Burridge was required to secure the champions spot. Burridge won the toss and put Petersfield in to bat, a positive display throughout the batting line-up saw a useful total of 137 posted in the 20 overs. Burridge openers then started well in reply and at the halfway mark were still up with run rate, however strength in bowling depth, a feature of the season meant the visitors could not maintain this momentum and the innings closed on 97.
Coach Simon Griffin said “It’s been a superb effort from the team, after a rain affected early season at the end of June we were second from bottom of the league. We then went on a fantastic run to win all our remaining games, and clinched the title on the last day of the season”
Chair James Stratford-Tuke said “this fantastic result is testament to a great youth set up that has been established at the club. Tuition by qualified coaches from age 7 upwards means we are now competing with and beating the strongest clubs in the region such as Havant and Portsmouth. Petersfield players are well represented at District and County level and this indicates a great future for the club”

The 1s remain in with a chance of promotion

MATCH REPORT: Petersfield beat Basingstoke to stay in promotion hunt
{submitted to Post}
Petersfield Is vs Basingstoke & North Hants IIIs
Petersfield comfortably accounted for Basingstoke on a glorious day at the Heath, winning by 5 wickets to stay in the chase for promotion from County Division 2.
Losing the toss and bowling first, Field ripped through the Basingstoke line-up, reducing their opponents at one point to 43 for 7. Opening bowlers Damian Carson (1-17) and Turk (1-20) gave nothing away, while Blanks picked up 2 wickets in an explosive first over, finishing with 3-27.
Basingstoke dug in and did well to drag their total to 125, Bradley at no. 9 batting diligently for 36. However they were second best to an on-form Petersfield attack, in which Stanley (a miserly 1-14 off 8 overs) and Charles (3-23) were completely on top in the latter stages of the innings.
In reply, Field steadily knocked off the runs in 26.2 overs, with the returning Shore (25), Dom Carson (33) and Blanks (30*) all making useful contributions. The result means Petersfield are in 6th place in the division, just outside the promotion spots, with 10 wins and 4 defeats.
Next week is a derby game as Field host Liphook & Ripsley at the Heath.

Ladies win again

Petersfield Ladies v Ropley Ladies

10th August 2015

A very hot day greeted the Ladies on Sunday and thankfully Petersfield won the toss and chose to

bat with the Heath looking splendid.

The innings did not start well with the with 2nd ball loss of Tina Emery however last week’s century

maker, Helen Whitaker, and the quick running Angie Clarke settled down to add 68 for the 2nd wicket

in just 12 overs. The loss of Clarke who unfortunately played on brought 13 year old Emily Anscombe

to the crease and her hours of practice showed as she put on a 120 for the 3rd wicket following an

early reprieve after getting caught for 0 from a no-ball. Emily hit 4 fours in a classy 35 until she was

run out trying to take a quick single from a misfield. Captain Jackson then added another 49 with the

now flowing Whitaker who brought up her century for the 2nd successive week. With Helen finally

dismissed for 121, Emma Hussey then smashed a quick 17 which contained 4  fours and Shannon

Bowe added a few late runs to end the Petersfield innings on a massive 266 for 6 from their 35

overs. Adlam took 3 wickets and was the pick of the bowlers for Ropley.

Angie Clarke and Rose Emery opened the bowling for Petersfield but Ropley made good progress

with a 50 partnership for the 1st wicket but Jackson and Whitaker then entered the attack and

wickets started to fall at regular intervals as they battled for the bowler of the year award. The

Captain continued to rotate the bowlers with all six used taking at least one wicket and four catches

being held, 2 by Emma Hussey as the visitors were finally dismissed for 116 from 33 overs.

This was the final league game of the season for the Petersfield Ladies and should see them finish 6th

from the 11 teams in the Hampshire Ladies league division 2 this year. Any players interested in

joining should contact Katie Jackson at lilcake90@gmail.com.

Panthers So Close Again

Panthers again come so close...
A great game of T20 cricket at Grayshott saw the Panthers come agonisingly close – again – to toppling strong opponents in their latest outing.
Batting first, the 2 Bens, Anscombe and Turk, again showed their metal with a superb 76-run partnership after losing Henry early, the Turkinator following his 50 on Friday with another superb knock of 50 ret'd, striking the ball cleanly to all corners. Wonderful to see.
AT and OJ continued the assault with some sharp running and powerful stroke play, before Grayshott's opening bowler came back on and applied the squeeze at the death with some high class pace bowling.
Our total of 137 looked defendable and Grayshott were behind the rate until the closing overs before managing to pull away, two of their batsmen scoring fine half-centuries themselves, eventually overhauling our total in the 19th over for 4 wickets down. Special mention for Adam Childs, who picked up 2 wickets early on. Great stuff.
So, almost a carbon copy of Friday night. What this young Panthers side are learning (the hard way) is that T20 cricket at this level is a game of such fine margins. Just a few more runs minus a couple of the fielding lapses... we were well in this match.
But the boys should be proud of their efforts and showed their skills to great effect. Some of the hitting by the batters in particular was spectacular. So close lads, but extremely well played.

Panthers on the prowl!

Fantastic evening at the Heath for the first Panthers' home game.

The lads couldn't quite topple Ropley despite some fine individual performances from Ben T (50 ret'd) in our total of 139 and 1 for 16 with the ball, two wickets for Ollie and a lovely knock by Ben A as well.

But after taking 3 early wickets, the Ropley nos 4 & 5 batted very well - it was almost pitch black by the end – to chase it down in the 19th. Nevertheless it was a fine effort all round by AT's Panthers. Another wicket, just a few more runs, and who knows?

Thanks to the Raiders, who were a great bunch of lads, and BIG THANKS to everyone who came to help and support - especially Iain Simpson, who is an absolute legend on the BBQ. And Blowers and Bumble (aka Dave Sq and Frank), who bossed the PA, even when giving the home ump some gyp!

Everyone had a good time, raised some money for the club, great game of cricket - what better way of spending a Friday evening!

Next home fixture tbc. Will keep you posted.

Petersfield 1s edge out Bransgore

MATCH REPORT: Petersfield v Bransgore
Petersfield edge Bransgore in low scoring thriller
Petersfield once again managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in this exciting County Division 2 match at the Heath.
Winning the toss, Field captain Damian Carson took the bold decision to bat on a wet but drying wicket, the Heath miraculously fit for play after Friday’s biblical deluge.
(A small army of club volunteers, armed with forks, brushes and drying equipment, had turned up early at the ground expecting the worst. However they weren’t needed as the Heath showed off its recuperative powers after an estimated month’s worth of rain had fallen in just 24 hours.)
Carson’s decision looked like backfiring as Bransgore, belying its lowly league position, tore through the Petersfield top order.
Last week’s leading run scorers, Thomas and Broadhurst, were dismissed early and the wickets continued to tumble thanks to a combination of excellent bowling by Jones (2 wickets) and Fox (an eye-catching 5 for 19 off 10 overs), injudicious shot selection and a tricky wicket where the ball would frequently ‘stop’ in the pitch due to the damp conditions.
Dominic Carson looked to have played a lone hand in scoring 21 in an innings that at one point was tottering on the brink of disaster at 63 for 8.
Under-15 Ben Turk (21) dug in and started the fight back, which was continued by Simpson and Gumbe. However it was a vital last wicket partnership of 52 between Petersfield veteran Chris Wood (31*), on a welcome return to the First XI, and Stanley (19), that gave the Field total of 138 an element of respectability. The experienced pair were the only batsmen to really master the conditions, playing sensible cricket and giving Petersfield just the hint of a chance.
In reply, Bransgore were immediately under the cosh, losing Butcher caught behind to Turk for a duck. Stanley then bowled Rouse for 18, before Gumbe had Bratt sharply stumped by keeper Thomas for 8. At 48 for 6, Petersfield looked to have gained the upper hand but Jones (16), Fox (24) and Wright (18) fought hard and threatened to haul Bransgore right back into contention.
With the pressure mounting, it needed a special effort by skipper Carson to work through the tail, picking up the last four wickets, three of them bowled, to dismiss Bransgore for 113, giving Field victory by an unlikely 25-run margin. Stanley (3-32) and Gumbe (2-18) were excellent in support.
A great game of cricket played in fine spirit – if a little hard on the nerves of the Petersfield faithful – means Field hold onto third spot in the league. Next week the team travels to Easton & Martyr Worthy to continue its push for promotion.

Panthers on the prowl

Panthers on the prowl.... first home match just a week away. Come and support the lads in their fixture against Sparsholt on Friday July 24th. Bar, BBQ, music – let's make it a fantastic T20 match day experience!

Petersfield 1s up to 3rd

Match report: Amport XI vs Petersfield First XI {submitted to the Post}
Petersfield’s young opening batsmen, Gabe Broadhurst and Alex Thomas, led the way with a superb 221-run partnership as Petersfield chased down Amport’s formidable-looking 254 to win by 9 wickets in their County Division 2 encounter.
Batting first on a flat wicket at Amport’s picturesque ground, with an outfield that was lightening fast, the home side lost Stuart Woodhouse early, bowled by Blanks for nought.
When Gumbe removed Randall for 27 and Turk got Dean Woodhouse caught behind for 36, things looked promising for ‘Field, but that brought Bone and Langdown together, who batted aggressively in putting on 63 for the third wicket, before Bone was bowled by Stanley for 32.
Langdown continued to take the attack to Petersfield, completing a fine century (121), Amport finishing on 254. Blanks picked up 3 wickets, and Turk and Gumbe 2 apiece, but arguably Stanley was the pick of the bowlers, taking 1 for 29 off his 10 overs when the going was at its toughest.
Amport would have fancied defending their total but all the talk during the tea interval was, given the benign conditions – would it be enough?
The answer turned out to be – no, not nearly enough, as Broadhurst and Thomas set about the Amport bowling, which was tidy but maybe lacked penetration. However this is to take nothing away from the ‘Field openers, who showed great composure, concentration and no little skill (or stamina!) as they built their impressive partnership.
Broadhurst was fluent, scoring quickly and showing his class with shots all around the ground, peppering the boundary with 20 fours. Thomas played an excellent supporting hand, running aggressively and also hitting some powerful straight drives of his own. This was a partnership of the highest quality.
The Amport bowlers had no answer as ‘Field’s total mounted steadily, always at or around the required rate. In fact the only surprise was when Bone sneaked one through Thomas’s defence with the score on 221, bowling him for 78. Blanks and Broadhurst, now completely dominant, continued the assault, the youngster finishing on a magnificent 148 not out, his second century in successive weeks.
To provide some context to this excellent away win, Amport’s century-scoring batsman Langdown was third in the division batting averages last year and opening bowler Woodhouse fourth in the bowling averages (0-68 off 9.5 yesterday). Amport finished fifth in the division last season.
The result means Petersfield move up one place to third in the table, with bottom club Bransgore visiting the Heath next week.

Petersfield 2s continued their superb season with another win in Regional Division 2 South league.Having lost 5 of the top 6 batsmen to a combination of illness, family issues and call ups to the 1s, Petersfield faced Old Netley and Highfield at the Heath.
Nicky Caddick (2-24) continued his fine form from last week removing N lebourne (1) clean bowled in the 2nd over. Nicky and Oscar Windebank (2-27) bowled very well and in the 9th over Oscar clean bowled Aliash (16).
The opening bowlers were causing issues for the top order of Old Netley reducing them to 36-4 in the 14th over. Most notable of the wickets was Andy Butcher stumping Chris Boon for 10 yards behind the stumps of fast bowler Nicky Caddick!

Jessie Singh (38) put on 33 for the 5th wicket with Z Ahmed (6) before Chris Wood got his first of 4 wickets as Ahmed was easily caught at mid off by Christie Salmon. Chris Wood then snapped up the next 3 wickets in 5 overs as he reduced Old Netley to 73-7 (including Singh clean bowled). Spin twin Chris Russell (1-31) was getting no luck at the other end until he had skipper Ben Shwartz (9) caught at mid on by Dave Squires low down. Skipper Richard Stephens (1-1) introduced himself and picked up the final wicket in the last over superbly caught at deep midwicket. Old Netley ended on 109

In a change of personnel at the top of the order Dave Squires (24) opened with Chris Wood (1) the pair put on 19 for the first wicket before Chris middled an off drive straight at the fielder who missed the ball but caught it off his body. Squires with Chris Russell (66 not out) kept the pressure on the Old Netley bowlers and fielders with some quick singles and punishing anything wayward with some nice shots for 4.
The pair put on 50 for the 2nd wicket before Squires misjudged a full toss to be clean bowled in the 16th over. Omar Iqbal (16 not out) joined Chris at the wicket and the pair took Field home in the 27th over with Chris Russell hitting the winning runs. Field picked up maximum points (24) to keep them at least in 2nd place with other results not in yet.

U19 T20: Portsmouth vs Petersfield Panthers

The Panthers showed their claws but went down fighting against a high-class Portsmouth outfit in their opening T20 match at a dank, miserable and windy St Helens.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Portsmouth openers Smitherman (28) and Farrant (50 ret'd) tore into the bowling, the ball flying to all parts of the Portsmouth ground. One leg-side heave from Farrant ended up on the 5th green of the neighbouring pitch and putt, scattering the Sunday afternoon golfers in the process.

In the face of this onslaught, Ollie Simpson held his nerve and, continuing his good form of recent weeks, bowled his four overs straight taking 1 for 32 – an excellent effort in the circumstances.

J Marston (48), Collier (22) and Prentice (35) continued to take the attack to the Panthers and, if anything, the ball flew even faster and further. So great credit to Turk (1 for 40), Cox (1 for 34, who was unlucky not to pick up a couple more) and Caddick (0 for 34) for keeping a lid on the carnage to some degree.

Fielding was often a hazardous occupation on St Helens' fast but uneven outfield and sighting the T20 pink ball was difficult in the dark, gusty conditions, which no doubt was a factor as 'Field put down at least 4 chances in the deep.

However special mention should go to Ben Anscombe, who held onto two catches at deep mid-wicket, the second of which a fantastic, running effort. Keeper Thomas also took a sharp chance standing up to Turk to dismiss skipper Marston, who showed some good sportsmanship in walking.

The lads scrapped hard to the end, never dropping their heads, typified by Matt Friend taking 2 wickets off the last 2 balls of the innings. Portsmouth finished on 215 for 5 off their 20 overs, a formidable total.

The Petersfield top order had their work cut out against Portsmouth first XI players A Marston and Prentice – some the older 'Field players will remember Prentice playing for Hambledon taking 7 for 4 in an U15 match – but opener Thomas, severe on anything short, pulling and driving powerfully, held the innings together with a fine 53 ret'd off 45 balls.

Although it was virtually impossible to keep up with the required rate, Simpson, Cox and especially Matt Friend (26), who had a fine all-round game, struck some lusty blows and never once did the boys take a backward step against their opponents. The Panthers eventually battled their way to a fighting 148 with the help of a couple of vintage Caddick reverse sweeps.

So, a loss by 67 runs, but to put this into some kind of perspective, our lads were up against at least 5 Portsmouth first teamers, who play Southern Premier Div 2, and often gave as good as they got. It was a gutsy performance showing lots of character against quality opposition and the Panthers should be very proud of their efforts.

1s get back to winning ways

Petersfield Crush Old N & Highfield To Get Back To Winning Ways
In the absence of the skipper Damian Carson, brother Dominic took charge of a one-side affair at the Heath this week. Batting first on a dry, hot day was an easy decision for Carson but the wicket would still prove helpful to the bowlers as the pitch wore.
The Petersfield side had an especially youthful look to it this week, with the combined aged of the openers totalling 33. Alex Thomas made a cautious, assured 22 before being caught at square leg in the 21st over but his 15 year old partner Gabe Broadhurst proved more fluent on the day and would steal the show. Broadhurst ran the Highfield openers backward of point and then, as their length waned, drove sweetly through the covers. At the half way point Petersfield were 90-1. Ash Spencer and Broadhurst then came together to share a partnership of 130 at over a run a ball, tucking into the off-spin of Ben Schuarz (3-0-37); their positivity was rewarded on the Heath’s fast outfield. Spencer was eventually stumped in the closing overs for 78 from 63 deliveries with Gabe Broadhurst achieving a majestic 121 before being run out by a sharp Highfield throw. Andy Barnes and Shaun Blanks than capped off a ruthless batting display with a few lofted drives taking the total to 266-3.
In reply Old N & Highfield never really looked in contention. Shaun Blanks and Ben Turk repeatedly beat the outside edge before Turk (6-2-14) removed Phil Comer’s stumps. Mark Stanley then put the match out of sight by drying up one end (6-1-7). Thereafter it was just about how many bowling points Petersfield could take from the game. Keith Gumbe duly obliged (10-4-16), finding plenty of turn and bounce to the Highfield right-handers; Oli Simpson (another under 17), took a fine diving catch off Gumbe. With his tail up, Simpson then enjoyed his opportunity to play first eleven cricket with 5-1-31. Although Old N & Highfield wickets continued to tumble they remained positive and good sports, eventually all out for 102 in the 35th over.
Broadhurst and Turk are products of Petersfield’s extensive Junior and Colt sections. At just 15 they are not just exciting prospects for the future but are clearly delivering at the senior level now.
Petersfield remain 4th in County Division 2 and will play Amport away next week.

2s stay second

Petersfield 2s remained 2nd in the league after a comprehensive 10 wicket victory away to Sarisbury.

Sarisbury decided to bat first on a glorious day at the Rec in Stubbington with a slight cross breeze. Opening bowlers Oscar Windebank (2 wickets for 37 from 10 overs) and Nicky Caddick (4 wickets for 2 runs off 6 overs) ripped through the top order with more unplayable deliveries than this reporter has seen in all the other matches this season. Nicky Caddick was almost unplayable in his spell and was about 2 inches from getting a hat-trick and 5 fer in one ball.

Frank Straw (2 for 5 from 4 overs) took over from Nicky and with his first ball removed left hander G Saunders (9). In his 3rd over he trapped S Andrews (0) plumb in front of middle stump. After Oscar had bowled out, Steve Gibson (2 for 0 off 5 balls) cleaned up the final 2 wickets either side of drinks. Sarisbury made 51 in their 20.5 overs

After a quick turnaround, Toby Austin (13 not out) and Will Rice (34 not out) showed no mercy and chased the total down in 8.1 overs. The 2s then had a nice tea and shuffled off back to the Heath to support and heckle the 1s at the Heath.

Man of the match Oscar Windebank for giving the opposition some much needed runs ;-)

Moment of the match - Petersfield's bowlers top stuff from them all backed up with inspired  bowling changes from the skipper.

Match report: Petersfield First XI vs Compton & Chandlers Ford

Petersfield lost by 4 wickets to Compton & Chandlers Ford on Saturday in a hard-fought, sometimes feisty County Division 2 encounter at the Heath.

Winning the toss and batting first on another warm day, ‘Field openers Damian Carson (25) and Broadhurst (24) started carefully on a wicket where scoring was sometimes difficult. Several batsmen got starts but no one managed to go on and make a major score against an attack in which Andy Gorty took 5 wickets.

Chasing Petersfield’s total of 190, C&CF accumulated steadily. Gumbe (2 for 43) and Stanley (1 for 24) again bowled well but despite Dom Carson’s two neat slip catches, and Broadhurst and Gumbe combing well to run out Rathod, ‘Field’s opponents overhauled their score in the 43rd over without too many alarms along the way.

After a match with plenty of talking points and where nine batsmen across the two sides scored twenties yet the highest score was C&CF opener Neethling’s 31, Petersfield will look to return to winning ways next Saturday, at home to Old Netley & Highfield.

Result Summary

Result :    Salthill CC - Salthill Cricket Club - Won by 5 wickets

Petersfield 2s lost their unbeaten record to Salthill in West Sussex today.

The day had started well with Captain Richard Stephens winning the toss and deciding to bat first with Will Rice (58) and Toby Austin (32) putting on 84 for the first wicket at 7 an over with some crisp and well timed shots which flew away on a very fast outfield (anything beating the fielder was a boundary). Will Rice then hit the ball to mid on and went for the single but was run out as the fielder hit the stumps directly leaving Will just short of his ground.

Ben Anscombe (51) fresh from his first 50 for the club last week, joined Toby in the middle. The pair put on 13 before Steve King (1 for 38) tooking a stunning one handed return catch. The scoring rate had slowed but Field were still going at a good rate. Ben and Will Jameson (22) added 38 before Will was adjudged LBW to Ashley Court (1 for 49).

Omar Iqbal (16) and Ben Anscombe took the total along to 194 before a mini collapse as the lower order tried to add vital runs to the total all going at better than a run a ball but the last 5 wickets fell for 22 to leave Field on 216, which in hindsight was 30 or so runs short bearing in  mind the very very fast outfield.

Petersfield got off to the perfect start with Oscar Windebank (1-49) removing A Wallgrove with the 4th delivery of the innings as he got one to jag back at the batsmen to remove his off stump. Ashley Court (48) and S Richardson (13) then pushed the score along to 76 punishing anything short and wide. The pair scoring at a very similar rate to Petersfields. Liam Charles (3-43) then came and looked to have turned the game in Fields favour removing Court and Richardson in 2 overs.

Unlike Field. Salthill kept the run rate very high continuing to punish anything wayward from the Field bowlers. Liam then removed L Carter (23) to rekindle Field's hopes of forcing a win but this did not last long as Salthill batsmen all continued to bat well despite some tidy overs from Will Rice (0-22) and Richard Stephens (1-50). Richard removed P Elsbury (33) but it was not enough to save Field as J Holder (37 not out) and P Fisk (34 not out) saw Salthill comfortably home with 5 overs to spare.

Field drop down to 2nd and hopefully they will look to bounce back away at Sarisbury next week to keep their promotion drive going.
