Petersfield U11As vs Fareham

On a Sunny Sunday morning Petersfield travelled to Fareham. Fareham duly won the toss and elected to field. Seb Kay and Ed Milford opened for petersfield. They moved the score along with some excellent quick singles before Seb was bowled by Ben Thomas. Joe Eglestaff joined Ed and they took the score to 30 in the 7th over when Ben Thomas grabbed his second wicket, bowling Joe. This brought Matt Friend in to bat and Ed and Matt kept the runs flowing. Ed retired on 20 with the score on 62 and Ossian Tate joined Matt. Matt retired in the 16th over for 20 with the score on 78. Ben Anscombe was next in and he and Ossian pushed he score along. Ossian raced to 18 with two big fours before being adjudged LBW going for a sweep in the last over. Ben had fallen with the score on 109 caught of Sahu. Joe Clarke and Kit Classen saw the final few balls out and Petersfield finished on a respectable 111 for 4.

Fareham opened with Matthew Donoghue and Sam Foster but a direct hit from a Joe Clarke throw resulted in an early run out. Matt Friend removed Ben Thomas before Saju started to score runs. Ossian Tate came on to bowl and claimed the wicket of Sam Foster. In his next over he was on a hatrick, bowling Connor Chalton and then Cameron Rumbles with successive balls. Seb Kay grabbed the wicket of Matt Fitsell but Saju retired on 21. Ed Milford bowled Elliot Clarke who score a good 19. Henry Dix was ran out and Ben Anscombe bowled Harriet Todd to close out the Fareham reply on 80 for 9.

Petersfield U11B vs Waterlooville

Petersfield U11B gained their first win of the season in their final game of the season and it was very much deserved as they put together all their small successes during the season to bowl well and bat well in the same match.

Waterlooville were put into bat by skipper Tommy Mathews and immediately struggled as Tommy and Cameron Porteous restricted the first pair to -1 run in the first 4 overs. More rusn were scored in the next 4 overs but further wickets by Jasper Cunningham and Kit Claasen.

Luke McGuire continued the good work by restricting Waterlooville to only a net increase of 3 runs. Luke was delighted to take his first wicket in competitive cricket. The bowling continued to be tight throughout from harvey baker, Hector Pocock and Ossian Tate. 2 further wickets were taken and Waterlooville finished on 244-9.

Matt Friend and Hector Pocock got Petersfield off to a great start scoring 25 runs off the first 4 overs. Although Cameron Porteous and Jasper Cunningham maintained the run rate they did lose 3 wickets with 2 run outs. Luke McGuier and Tommy mathews steadied the ship and after 12 overs Petersfield had reached the Waterlooville total. All they had to do was to avoid losing wickets to secure their first win. That is exactly what they did. Harvey baker and Kit Claasen took the total to 260 and then Ossian Tate and Ed Braithwaite took the total to 280-4 and Petersfield had won by 36 runs.

Coach Andy Salmon was delighted with their efforts. "All they had to do was to combine their best parts into one game and thyey achieved that in this game. I look forward to seeing how these players will now develop as some of them will move on to the A team next season. It has been a pleasure to coach them this year and they can all be proud of their efforts."

Petersfield U15s vs Hambledon

Petersfield may have gone down to defeat by local rivals Hambledon but put in a spirited performance with many positive aspects.

Winning the toss, U15 skipper Newman opted to bowl first but saw Hambledon get off to a flyer. Aggressive hitting by Lewis and Prentice saw the run rate climb to over 11 an over and the ball dispatched to all parts of the Heath. At 123 for 1 after 11 overs, Petersfield were looking at conceding a massive total but did extremely well to peg back their opponents to 190 for 7 after 20 overs.

Newman was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets and also managed a run-out with a direct hit. Friend picked up his first wicket of the season and Murray pouched two catches.

In response to a daunting total, Petersfield batted positively from the start. The top order of Newman, Friend, Thomas and Murray were all in the runs but opener Hiscock led the way in typical fashion with a fluent 50 (ret’d).

To finish on 132 for the loss of only two wickets was a fine effort. Not only was this the U15s’ highest total of the season, it was nearly 100 runs more than the team’s previous total against the same opposition. Hambledon have some very good players, so this was a gutsy display by our lads.

Petersfield U13 vs Portsmouth Community

After last weeks loss the lads returned to the Heath to face Portsmouth Community CC on an overcast and humid morning at the Heath. Alex Squires won the toss and had no hesitation in putting the opposition in to bat on a distinctly green and grassy wicket.

Oliver Simpson (2 for 6) opened the bowling and reduced the Portsmouth team to 6-3 off the first over. Will Grange and Joe Mayall combined to run the top scorer from the first game out without facing a ball. The Portsmouth team were struggling to cope with the tight and accurate bowling and apart from Louis Andrews (19 not out) all of the lads struggled against the Petersfield bowlers. At the first change of bowling Dan May (2-6) took 2 wickets in two balls, with Dan Eglestaff (3-2) doing the same at the other end Petersfield were dominating. Dan Parry (1-13) took a wicket thanks to a superb catch at short midwicket by Josh Bird then in the same over Tom Thompsett and Joe Mayall combined to run the last man out with some sharp fielding to leave Portsmouth all out for 36.

Petersfield looking for a good start so as not to give the opposition a sniff of a chance unfortunately lost Joe Mayall in the 2nd over after the ball did not bounce as much as he anticipated. Josh Bird (13) and Dan Parry (16 not out) then took Petersfield to within 6 of victory before Josh was superbly caught behind the wicket by the wicket keeper. Rob Schofield (4 not out) then hit the winning runs to give Petersfield 20 points and close the gap on Steep in the table.

A great all round performance from Petersfield to bounce back from the defeat to Steep the week before and so on to the last 2 games of the season against top of the table US Portsmouth.
Man of the Match goes to Dan Eglestaff for his fantastic bowling spell. Mentions also for all the bowlers who set up the victory.

Petersfield U11A vs Hambledon

With three of the squad away with their school, Petersfield gave the opportunity to 2 players from their B side. But before even a ball was bowled, an accident led to their keeper needing to go to hospital after being struck in the head by a ball. Down to ten and missing a keeper, but with Gabriel Broadhurst losing the toss, it was time for Petersfield to field as Hambledon chose to bat.
In the away game, Hambledon had scored 143 and facing a weakened team they were looking for a similar score. Field had other ideas and fielded and bowled well. Unfortunately they were then hit by another injury to Max Hendrick, whose damaged ankle meant he was struggling to run. Harry Thistlethwaite and Tom Toogood opened the batting. In the second over, William Milner-Smith claimed the wicket of Toogood. With lots of gaps in the field the batsman were scoring runs. The fielding was good though and all of the bowlers did well, though not taking wickets. Harry retired on 20, and Henry Glanfield (22 retd) Ethan Hoddle (16 not out), Louis Matovu (22 retd) and Guy Mullins (12 not out) took the score to 115 for 1 in the 20 overs.

In response Petersfield were up against a strong bowling attack and with the normal openers missing, Seb Kay and the injured Max Hendrick opened but both were out without scoring. With Gabriel Broadhurst and Ossian Tate now in could they get the score going? It wasn't to be as Ossian was bowled for 2, Henry Cobb finishing his devastating opening spell with 3 for 3! Things were looking tough and when Kit Classen followed Ossian back to the club house, Petersfield were 18 for 4. First William Milner-Smith and then Harvey Baker joined Gabriel and helped to build the score. Gabriel retired on 21 and when William was out the score was up to 48. In came Joe Eglestaff but he was unlucky to be run out. Joe Clarke joined Harvey and now Petersfield dug in to ensure they were not all out. Harvey Baker finishing on 12 not out and Joe Clarke on 3 not out.

Hambledon 115/1
Petersfield 64/6

Hambledon win by 51 runs.

Petersfield U11B vs Waterlooville

It was another good team display, particularly in the field,.

On a lovely sunny morning we won the toss and decided to bat first, Waterlooville bowled good line and length andd also took early wickets which put us on the back foot, but an excellent 14 from Tommy at the end brought us back to a respectable total of 244 for the loss of 9 wickets. (Waterlooville also took two excellent catches)

It was Waterloolle's turn to bat and they batted well, our bowling was good but they eventually finished on 277, winning by 33 runs and losing only 3 wickets. Bowling honours go to Cameron who bowled 2 overs for only 2 runs and made the ball swing.

Things to take into practice on Monday nights, for batting work on defensive shots and pushing and running those singles for bowling concentrate on bowling straight.

The differene in the end wasn't runs, we scored more runs, 99 runs, to their 92 runs, but they only lost 3 wixkets to our 9.

Thanks to Richard and Alex who umpired and rallied the troops.

Petersfield U15s vs Fareham

The U15s put in a battling performance but failed to do the double over an attack-minded Fareham team, going down by 8 wickets in this away fixture.

Winning the toss and batting on a lively surface, Petersfield got off to a solid start with openers Friend and Newman before suffering a top-order collapse. At one stage a very low score looked on the cards, but a gutsy display by Groves-Hambridge, Cox, Murray and Cains in the lower-middle order dragged the score kicking and screaming to a competitive-looking 105 in the allotted 20 overs.

Credit in particular goes to Simon Murray (13) in his first innings of the season and Ben Cox, who struck the ball cleanly and with great timing in compiling 24, his highest score so far this year.

Hampered by the loss of strike bowler Caddick (twisted ankle) and joint-leading wicket-taker Aaron Murray (calf strain), Petersfield needed some luck and early wickets to put their opponents under pressure, but Fareham opener Cornish (50 ret’d) batted well and took the game away from Petersfield. Newman and Cox each picked up a consolation wicket, caught behind and bowled respectively.

The U15s didn’t enjoy much luck in this game but stuck to their task well with a spirited team effort. Next match – Hambledon at the Heath.

Petersfield 3rd XI vs Burghclere 2nd XI

The Thirds picked up their second win of the season in impressive style, comfortably accounting for Burghclere by 5 wickets at Penns.

Newman and Windebank (Jnr) opened the attack for Petersfield and immediately put their opponents under pressure with a superb spell of new ball bowling. Suitably softened up, Burghclere then had no answer to the wily spin of O’Brien and lethal late swing of Cox, each picking up 4 wickets. The fielding was smart and every catch was taken in a great display.

Chasing just 95 for victory, opener Thomas threw off the shackles and, in a style very reminiscent of his father, hit an aggressive 20 at more than a run a ball. His dismissal, bowled playing on, triggered a mini-collapse. At 54 for 5, the game was on a knife-edge and it took all the vast experience of club president Nick Blakstad to steady the ship. Batting with U15 Newman, who scored an excellent 21 n.o. when the pressure was on, they safely steered Petersfield to a well-deserved victory.

Petersfield U17s vs Ropley in the Quarter Final of the U17 County Club Championship

Petersfield progressed into the last 4 of the U17 County Club Championship with an 8 wicket win over Ropley. Winning the toss Petersfield put Ropley in to bat with the confidence gained from chasing down a total against Grayshott in the last round.

Rory Newman and Chris Salmon bowled tightly in the first 4 overs restricting Ropley to just 11 runs. Newman completed his excellent spell by dismissing both openers. Matt Clarke and Jordan Hiscock kept the pressure up with Hiscock getting Packenham-Walsh caught behind and at 43-3 off 11 overs Ropley needed to change gear. They took advantage of a side strain to Hiscock to release the pressure with 17 off the over. Greenwood (30) and Forest (34no) batted well together as their names might imply and they started to accelerate the score until a smart stumping by Bob Wemyss off the bowling of Guy Wilson accounted for Greenwood. Forest needed support to keep the momentum going but Matt Crouch had other ideas taking 2 wickets in an over. Guy Wilson picked up his second wicket and Matt Clarke his first as Forest began to run out of partners. Petersfield tried to keep him off the strike but when he got it he took advantage striking a 4 and a 6 in the same over. Ropley just edged past 100 to 104-8 and this was not going to be easy for Petersfield in the fading light.

Matt Clarke and Ben Friend started circumspectly and reached 22 off 6 overs which was just the start the team needed. With the openers off and ready to take on the change bowlers, Petersfield were feeling comfortable. However Smith and T Stennett bowled accurately and after 9 overs the total had only progressed to 29 and the pressure was beginning to build. This was released by a bad over from Smith conceding 14 and he was quickly taken off and replaced by spinner, Forest. Pressure began to build again and Clarke reacted by coming down the wicket and being stumped for a good 24. At the other end Friend Ben Friend was steadily building another good innings. His timing square of the wicket is good enough to bring the 4s when required and his much improved running between the wickets brings the singles. Now joined by Chris Salmon Petersfield needed 44 off 6 overs to win. Taking quick singles put the pressure on the field and some big hitting by Salmon eased the pressure to bring the total in to sight. With just one run to win, Salmon skied one to mid-wicket leaving Friend to score the winning run with 2 overs to spare to finish on 47no.

Coach Andy Salmon was delighted with the performance and very proud of the team. “The performance today shows how fast these young players are maturing. They knew what to do and how to do it and did not panic at any stage. It shows how far the club has come that even without 3 of our regular players we put out an U17 team of players who fielded well and I believe any one of them could have done what those guys did with the bat. They should not approach the semi-final thinking that they have achieved their potential – I believe there is much more to come.”

Petersfield U11As vs Portsmouth

A great game of cricket closely fought with a last over win for Portsmouth!

Gabriel Broadhurst took over as Petersfield skipper in the absence of the injured Matt Friend. He won the toss and elected to bat on a hard, green wicket. The outfield looked a bit long and so it played! The Portsmouth opening bowlers of J Thompson and O Davies were accurate and getting plenty of bounce from the wicket. Petersfield's opening pair of Ben Anscombe and Ben Turk had to be watchful and runs were hard to come by. H Randall and J Hunter took over the bowling and after 10 overs, Petersfield had reached 29 for no wicket. C Slimm then took the first wicket, bowling Anscombe for 15, bringing Gabriel Broadhurst to the crease. Ben Turk started to attack and hit two boundaries (very tough with the longer grass on the outfield) and he retired not out on 20. Ossian Tate joined Gabriel but the bowlers kept on top of the scoring. Both batsman played some good shots but instead of a boundary were rewarded with 1s and 2s. The spinners were on and it was G Palmer-Goddard who took the prize wicket of Gabriel for 8. G McTear bowled a superb bowl to remove Ossian for 8, pitching on off and taking the leg stump, great ball! Seb Kay and Alfie Casson both only got 1, with S Sparks and J Thompson taking a wicket each. Cameron Porteous and Joe Clarke finished not out with Petersfield posting a low 66/5, though challenging on the wicket and pitch.

Portsmouth came in to chase the openers of C Slimm and A Patel got the runs going. Ben Anscombe was bowling superbly and proving difficult to score off. Ben Turk bowled a couple on leg which were dispatched for 4s but he came back and bowled Slimm with his next ball. 9 for 1 and the Petersfield tails were up. G McTear was bowled by Turk and Anscombe then had J Rockensus caught by Gabriel. The score was 14 for 4. Slowly Portsmouth scored runs, and J Hunter kept their innings together. Sparks, Patel and Davies went next with Ben Turk getting his third and William Milner-Smith grabbing two. 51 for 7 after 15 and 16 to win from 4 overs with three wickets left. Hunter retired on 21 (a match winning innings) but with McTear and Randal at the crease the pressure was on. With two overs left 9 was needed. In the 19th, Randall hit a four and with 8 from the over just 1 was needed in the final over. Ossian Tate came on to bowl but Portsmouth scrambled the winning run from the third ball of the final over.

Both keepers had excellent games with only 2 byes for Petersfield and 3 for Portsmouth.

Portsmouth win by 3 wickets.

A fantastic game played in good spirit. Congratulations to everyone.

Petersfield U13s vs Steep

On a glorious North Hampshire morning Petersfield turned up looking to gain revenge for their early season defeat to Steep. The captain won the toss and decided as it was an artificial pitch to bat first. Joe Mayall (1) and Dan Parry (5) soon went, followed by the rest of the top order, Tom Pocock (2), Will Morton-Scott (0) and Rob Schofield (1) found it difficult to adjust to the artificial wicket and the length being much fuller than they are used too. Josh Bird (14) came I, steadied the batting and despite a couple of fortunate shots just missing fielders played some lovely shots before chasing a wide and getting caught out at point he was ably supported by Rory Classen (2) who despite only getting 2 showed great bravery after getting hit in the ribs and stayed with Josh to mount a mini recovery to take Petersfield to 36-6. Dan Eglestaff (1) came in swinging to try and push the score on. Ollie Simpson (12 not out) then ran his partner Alex Squires out (0) after a big mix up but along with Will Grange (7) played some classy shots to push the total beyond 50 for a final total of 61 and 1 batting point.

To sum up the batting too many wickets were lost early on and the lads did well to recover from 13-5 to post the score they did.

Needing early wickets Alex Squires (0-14) opened the bowling and despite good form in the nets could not repeat the performance. Tom Pocock (1-4) bowled very well in his 2 overs justifying his captain’s faith in him by taking the first wicket. Ollie Simpson (0-3) came on first change and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket or two, bowling the sort of line just outside off stump that the coaches had been asking for. Rob Schofield (0-15) was unlucky, Dan Parry (0-1) and Will Morton-Scott (0-2) bowled tidily before Will Grange (0-5) and Dan Eglestaff (1-5) bowled the remaining overs with both causing the batsmen problems Dan picking up the only other wicket to fall to leave Steep with the double for the season.

We were 40 runs short of a defendable total I am afraid, but a good effort in the end.

Petersfield Girls in the Lady Taverners Tournament

Last Sunday saw the new Petersfield girls under 11 side play their 1st ever games in a 3 way tournament at the Heath ground.

First up were Hursley park, batting 1st and led by captain Lorna the Petersfield side started well with a 1st ball boundary 4 however this was soon following by an expansive hook shot from the Captain who destroyed her stumps in the process! That proved to be the only wicket that Petersfield lost posting an impressive 154 for 1 from their 10 overs with Molly and Olivia W scoring 4 4’s between them in their last pair stand.

Although they only lost 1 wicket Hursley Park could not match Petersfield’s big hitting with the game effectively ending when Molly ran out the threatening Jessica, Hursley finishing on 136 for 1 leaving Petersfield with a victory by 18 runs.

This left Petersfield to face St Cross for the tournament win and a place in the regional finals. Batting 1st Lorna again started with a 4 from the 1st ball leaving her 1st ball scores in the last 3 innings at 16 runs (4,4,6). Amelia also followed this with a 4 of her own until she was bowled from her last ball. Some good batting followed however 2 wickets fell in one over leaving Petersfield defending a slightly light score of 132 for 3.

St Cross made professional work of keeping the scoreboard ticking over despite some more accurate bowling and fielding from the Petersfield side. With just 2 overs remaining Petersfield needed to make something happen and Olivia duly obliged with a perfect pick up and 30 yard direct hit run out which stunned the St Cross batter. Unfortunately for Petersfield, St Cross regained their composure and finished on 142 for 2, a win by 10 runs.

Congratulations to everyone who played on the day, Molly top scored with 19 runs and both Olivia’s bowled well. I look forward to seeing this team develop over the next few seasons.

Petersfield Girls vs Grayshott

Monday evening saw the Petersfield girls face Grayshott for their return 20 over game looking to avenge their earlier June defeat with a stronger team following the return of Polly and Lois to the side.

A brilliant start saw Jess bowl the Grayshott opener with her 1st ball and this was quickly followed by 2 wickets for Olivia on her under 13 debut. Some good, tight bowling along with some excellent ground fielding kept Grayshott under control. The usual strong pairs batting at the tail end of the Grayshott innings did increase the tempo of their scoring however one wicket for both Lois and Molly, both of whom bowled with good pace, kept Grayshott to 178 for 5 from their 20 overs, 8 runs less than their score against us earlier in the season.

If the bowling started well, then the batting started even better with Lorna hitting the 1st ball of the innings for 6 over square leg. More strong hitting and running followed with her and Leah scoring 29 runs in the 1st 4 overs. Petersfield built on this for the next 8 overs, running well whilst ensuring that after 12 overs they had scored 178 without loss and needed just to keep their heads in order to record the win. Any worries regarding this were soon dismissed as Katie P despatched several balls to into the outfield. Lois and Polly then saw the innings out leaving Petersfield the victors on 215 for 2 wickets, a win by 37 runs.

This was by far our best performance of the season, the ground fielding in particular was brave and focused. Lorna topped the batting with 17 runs but in only losing 2 wickets in 20 overs everyone made a positive contribution to the score. Olivia and Jess led the bowling statistics with 2 for 5 and 1 for 5 from their 2 overs respectively, Olivia in particular played well in her 1st under 13 game for the club.

Petersfield 1st XI vs Old Alresford

Petersfield maintained their good start to the season with a crushing seven wicket victory over rivals Old Alresford.

Field won the toss and elected to bowl reaping instant reward with Nicky Caddick reducing the visitors to 29 – 2 from 9 overs.

Jack Hannam and Chris Wood picked up a wicket a piece before drinks leaving the visitors reeling on 58 for 4 from 20 overs.

Only Ben Stanbrook showed any resistance scoring a well paced 80 before Caddick got his man caught in the deep by Chris Wood. Caddick proceeded to rip through the lower order recording outstanding figures of 6 for 30 from his 10 overs.

Fred Patten then mopped up the tail picking up two quick wickets from just 3 overs leaving Old Alresford on 157 all out.

Petersfield made yet another positive start with Billy Maisey hitting the ball to all parts of the ground. Andy Salmon was lost in the 5th over leaving skipper Ash Spencer and Maisey with some rebuilding to do. The pair added 34 before Maisey was bowled attempting one big shot too many. This bought Harry Hannam to the crease who continued his good form crashing 48 runs in double quick time before being bowled by Burt.

Spencer finished the game smashing a huge 6 over mid wicket bringing up his half century in the process. The home side’s promotion hopes remain on track after yet another maximum point victory.

Petersfield U11As vs Locksheath

On a glorious summer evening, Petersfield U11A took on Locks Heath U11A in the SEHCA A League. Captain Matt Friend duly won the toss and elected to bat. Opening with Ben Anscombe, Matt looked to go after the bowlers but his string drive was straight to the bowler and soon Ben joined Matt back in the clubhouse with the score on just 7. At 7 for 2 after just 2 overs, Gabriel Broadhurst and Ossian Tate came to the crease. Some excellent cricket from both, a mixture of boundaries and quick 2s and 1s. Both reached 19 and both struck a boundary so retiring on 23 not out. The score was now 74 with Ossian and Gabriel having shared a 67 run partnership. Next in was Ben Turk and William Milner-Smith, but the introduction if spin saw William bowled and followed quickly by Jack Butcher. With 9 overs left Joe Eglestaff joined Ben Turk. The runs were not coming as quickly but together they got Petersfield up to a respectable 105 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs.

In response, Locks Heath were always under pressure. Ben Anscombe taking 4 wickets, Gabriel Broadhurst and Ben Turk 2 each and Ossian Tate with 1. Locks Heath all out for 82.

Petersfield win by 23 runs.
