Petersfield U11As vs Portsmouth

A great game of cricket closely fought with a last over win for Portsmouth!

Gabriel Broadhurst took over as Petersfield skipper in the absence of the injured Matt Friend. He won the toss and elected to bat on a hard, green wicket. The outfield looked a bit long and so it played! The Portsmouth opening bowlers of J Thompson and O Davies were accurate and getting plenty of bounce from the wicket. Petersfield's opening pair of Ben Anscombe and Ben Turk had to be watchful and runs were hard to come by. H Randall and J Hunter took over the bowling and after 10 overs, Petersfield had reached 29 for no wicket. C Slimm then took the first wicket, bowling Anscombe for 15, bringing Gabriel Broadhurst to the crease. Ben Turk started to attack and hit two boundaries (very tough with the longer grass on the outfield) and he retired not out on 20. Ossian Tate joined Gabriel but the bowlers kept on top of the scoring. Both batsman played some good shots but instead of a boundary were rewarded with 1s and 2s. The spinners were on and it was G Palmer-Goddard who took the prize wicket of Gabriel for 8. G McTear bowled a superb bowl to remove Ossian for 8, pitching on off and taking the leg stump, great ball! Seb Kay and Alfie Casson both only got 1, with S Sparks and J Thompson taking a wicket each. Cameron Porteous and Joe Clarke finished not out with Petersfield posting a low 66/5, though challenging on the wicket and pitch.

Portsmouth came in to chase the openers of C Slimm and A Patel got the runs going. Ben Anscombe was bowling superbly and proving difficult to score off. Ben Turk bowled a couple on leg which were dispatched for 4s but he came back and bowled Slimm with his next ball. 9 for 1 and the Petersfield tails were up. G McTear was bowled by Turk and Anscombe then had J Rockensus caught by Gabriel. The score was 14 for 4. Slowly Portsmouth scored runs, and J Hunter kept their innings together. Sparks, Patel and Davies went next with Ben Turk getting his third and William Milner-Smith grabbing two. 51 for 7 after 15 and 16 to win from 4 overs with three wickets left. Hunter retired on 21 (a match winning innings) but with McTear and Randal at the crease the pressure was on. With two overs left 9 was needed. In the 19th, Randall hit a four and with 8 from the over just 1 was needed in the final over. Ossian Tate came on to bowl but Portsmouth scrambled the winning run from the third ball of the final over.

Both keepers had excellent games with only 2 byes for Petersfield and 3 for Portsmouth.

Portsmouth win by 3 wickets.

A fantastic game played in good spirit. Congratulations to everyone.
