The Thirds picked up their second win of the season in impressive style, comfortably accounting for Burghclere by 5 wickets at Penns.
Newman and Windebank (Jnr) opened the attack for Petersfield and immediately put their opponents under pressure with a superb spell of new ball bowling. Suitably softened up, Burghclere then had no answer to the wily spin of O’Brien and lethal late swing of Cox, each picking up 4 wickets. The fielding was smart and every catch was taken in a great display.
Chasing just 95 for victory, opener Thomas threw off the shackles and, in a style very reminiscent of his father, hit an aggressive 20 at more than a run a ball. His dismissal, bowled playing on, triggered a mini-collapse. At 54 for 5, the game was on a knife-edge and it took all the vast experience of club president Nick Blakstad to steady the ship. Batting with U15 Newman, who scored an excellent 21 n.o. when the pressure was on, they safely steered Petersfield to a well-deserved victory.
