MATCH REPORT: Bosham vs Petersfield IIs

Petersfield IIs notched up their second win on the trot with a dominant performance against Bosham in a high-scoring encounter played at Oaklands Park, Chichester.

Losing the toss, ‘Field did well to restrict their opponents to 207 for 9 off their 42 overs, defending two very short straight boundaries and with a dry, rutted outfield (which doubled as one of Chichester Rugby Club’s pitches) making fielding a hazardous occupation.

The pitch, although cracked and uneven, in fact played surprisingly well. Loose deliveries were ruthlessly punished and Abbott (41) and G Barrett (43) kept the scoreboard moving at a fair lick. The 8th wicket partnership between Cowell (20) and Gibbard (27) frustrated ‘Field still further in taking Bosham past the 200-run mark.

So lots of credit should go to Straw (2 for 33 off 8 overs) and Charles (2 for 36 off 10) for keeping a lid on things and retaining a measure of control. Stephens and Squires collected a wicket apiece, with Russell rattling through the lower-middle order, taking 3 for 31.

Once again ‘Field held onto their chances, with Anscombe and Gibson holding good catches and keeper Thomas picking up a couple of stumpings at the death.

The Bosham total looked a par score on the fast-scoring ground but it would need a good batting performance to chase down the 208 required to win. Fortunately openers Thomas and Austin continued their good form from last week, putting on 122 for the first wicket, timing the ball beautifully and scoring at 6 an over. Not a chance was offered until Austin was caught off a leading edge for 51.

Rice kept the momentum going with a brutal 24-ball 40, leaving Thomas to hit the winning runs in the 35th over, carrying his bat for a fine 82*, having been on the field for the entire duration of the match.

This was a top all-round performance by a strong ‘Field second XI, which bodes extremely well for the rest of the season.
