Winning the toss and asking Burridge to bat on a low and slow Heath wicket, opening bowlers Simpson and skipper Stephens made early inroads removing Bevis and White cheaply.
The Burridge middle order threatened a recovery but excellent spells of bowling by Charles (who opened his account for the season with a wicket in his first ball) and Iqbal applied the squeeze, with two wickets apiece. Charles finished with the excellent figures of 10-4-12-2.
‘Field caught their catches with two efforts by Anscombe and Austin standing out, the latter, diving backwards, an outstanding one-handed effort.
Russell picked up 3 wickets to mop up the tail as Burridge finished on 112 for 9 off their 42 overs.
In reply, Petersfield’s Thomas (31) and Austin (27) started busily, putting away the bad ball, in a 60-run opening partnership that set the foundation for the win.
A small mid-innings wobble, 3 wickets falling in quick succession (two by spinner Candy) was righted by sensible batting by Russell and youngster Anscombe, with Stephens hitting the winning runs in the 24th over.
A solid performance to open the season and a satisfying win. Pack the buckets and spades: next week it’s off to the south coast to play Bosham.
