Petersfield 1st XI Win Last Over Nail Biter

Petersfield 1st XI Win Last Over Nail Biter
Petersfield CC 1st XI Vs Bedhampton CC, Heath, Petersfield, 16 May 2015.
After rain mid-week the lush Heath looked fantastic but the wicket was to prove significantly slower than normal; this created a tremendously tense game that ebbed and flowed with both sides having opportunities to win.
The Bedhampton openers made a watchful start making 30 before a superb direct hit from mid-on by Ash Spencer ran out Dan Clark. Mark Stanley (8-0-26) and Damian Carson (10-1-30) were then able to apply pressure keeping Bedhampton to a modest 65 by half way.
However positive stroke play from Ben De Jong and Martyn Hovey made Petersfield pay for their earlier sloppy fielding and the pair accelerated to 137 in just 10 more overs. On course for 220 Bedhampton were pegged back by a short frugal spell from Dominic Carson and a match winning performance from Keith Gumbe (10-4-30). Gumbe’s left arm off-spin befuddled Bedhampton and as wickets tumbled they were restricted to just 40 runs off the last 10 overs finishing on 189-7.
In reply openers, Gabe Broadhurst and Damian Carson looked untroubled taking 50 off the first 10 before a mix-up saw Broadhurst run out for 20. Ash Spencer (29) continued the positive chase before his loose shot to long-off reduced Petersfield to 96-2. With half the overs left and plenty of batting to come things still looked entirely comfortable. But some tight disciplined bowling from Bedhampton’s Martyn Hovey (10-3-30) and Matt Grinter (10-2-32) put them totally in command. Dominic Carson was trapped LBW for just 4 and Andy Barnes (4) got a low ripper which removed his leg stump. More wickets tumbled and Petersfield were quickly 8 down still needing 60. Wicket keeper, Harry Lambert (24) and a superbly controlled knock from Damian Carson (71) seemingly put Petersfield back on top before Gardner removed Lambert with Petersfield still needing 6 from 2. Fittingly it was left to the number 11, and man of the match, Keith Gumbe to hit the winning runs with 3 ball to spare.
The result leaves Petersfield in 4thposition in the league, 2 from 2. They play Bournemouth at the Heath next Saturday, 2PM.
