MATCH REPORT: Petersfield 1s vs Old Basing 1s

Petersfield came out on top in a tight, gripping encounter against Old Basing at the Heath on Saturday, winning their Hampshire Cricket League County Division 2 match by 24 runs.

Bowling first on a pacey wicket, Old Basing ripped through the Petersfield top order, at one point reducing the home side to 97 for 6. Alex Thomas (47) dug in and led the fight back in a vital 47-run partnership with youngster Ben Turk (21).

The ‘Field tail wagged vigorously with useful contributions from Liam Charles (14) and Ollie Simpson (20) taking the team to 183 all out, much more than seemed likely at one point. The wickets were shared around evenly between the Old Basing bowlers, with Donaldson, D Weir, Anikary, Turner and Cooper all taking two apiece.

In reply, Old Basing lost wickets at regular intervals but kept up with the required rate. A tight finish looked in prospect, especially with Greg Donaldson (84) going so well for the visitors. It was his dismissal, brilliantly caught on the run by Liam Charles off his own bowling, making yards of ground to his left, that effectively settled the match.

Damian Carson was superb for ‘Field (6 for 20 off 9.3), well supported by Mark Stanley (1 for 38) and Liam Charles (2 for 37).

A great win for the home side, who have now won four out of four, and next week visit league high flyers, Bishops Waltham.

Man of the match: Alex Thomas’s 47 helped set up the victory when the going was at its toughest, Damian Carson’s six wickets helped clinch it but the MoM has to go to Greg Donaldson, who bowled well and batted brilliantly in a losing cause. It was a marvellous solo effort, if ultimately to no avail.

Moment of the match: Without question, Liam Charles’s wonderful catch. Because that was the match, there and then.
