Petersfield CC under 15s started their league season with a disappointing loss as the hosts
won by 18 runs.
Petersfield skipper Gabe Broadhurst lost the toss and was asked to field first. They got of to
a great start as Ben Turk (4 overs 2 wickets for 13 runs) took a wicket in his 2nd over to
remove F Steel (5) and then in his 3rd removed W.Hay (3). Charlie Dean (10) and Joe
Movey (26 not out) rebuilt the innings and put on 32 for the 3rd wicket before Harvey Baker
(2 - 1 - 13) got Charlie Dean to miss time a drive to Ben Turk at backward point. M Carter
came in and played some lusty shots to score a quickfire 15 before being trapped LBW to Kit
Classen (1 - 1 - 6). Kit Classen then run out D Russell for 2 as Havant finished on 88.
Petersfield had fielded well but gave away a few too many extras who finished 2nd top
scorer with 25 but the total seemed achievable with the batting line up of Petersfield
In reply Petersfield did not start well with Ben Anscombe (0) being bowled off a ball that kept low with the score on 5. Gabe Broadhurst (36 retired) and Tommy Matthews (16) put on 50 before
Broadhurst was retired (silly rule IMHO). Ben Turk (1) then shuffled across his stumps to be
trapped LBW by Carter (4 - 3 - 10) off Carters first ball. Matt Friend (1) then played a swipe
to Carter to be bowled. At the other Tommy Matthews was still looking good before he was
caught at square leg by Russell even with the sun in his eyes (great catch) to give Gilbert his
first of 3 wickets. The story of the Petersfield innings was one of great frustration to coach
and parents as player after player was out playing back foot shots to the spinners on a low
pitch. The coach particularly frustrated as he keeps emphasising that you do not play back to
spinners in May.
To finish on a high note Gabe Broadhurst and Tommy Matthews continued their fine form at
the beginning of the season.
Petersfield fielding and bowling was some of the best I have
seen this early in a season
