Petersfield 1st XI vs St Mary Bourne

Petersfield travelled to St Mary Bourne looking to build on their recent strong performances in the league.

Taking into account the weather, skipper Ash Spencer inserted the opposition reaping instant rewards with Christie Salmon dismissing the dangerous Chislett in the 8th over.

Salmon and Caddick picked up a wicket apiece leaving the hosts on 70 for 3 after 14 overs.

Chris Russell and Wood slowed the game down keeping the run rate low whilst picking up a couple of wickets with Mary Bourne finishing on 191 for 5.

After a slow start Spencer accerelated the run rate before falling for a quickfire 20 in the 9th over. Andy Salmon along with Billy Maisey batted superbly putting on 91 for the second wicket; Salmon looking for a second successive century against St Mary Bourne.

Maisey fell in the 26th for a classy 42 bringing Jack Hannam to the crease. Salmon and Hannam put on 73 in just 9 overs giving field an 8 wicket victory.

Salmon finishing on 84* and Hannam on 39* giving field yet another emphatic win.

Petersfield U13s vs Portsmouth

With the manager away for the first away game of the season for the under 13’s it was left to the coach Paddy May to run things and provide me with a brief report before he jetted off for a week’s holiday.
The result of the game (a win for Petersfield) gives the under 13 lads their first win for 2 seasons which I understand was a fantastic effort all round.
We batted first with Daniel Parry opened the batting for the first time scoring 31 confirming his manager’s faith in his ability and temperament as an opener. Gabriel Broadhurst (30 retired) continued his fine start to the season The rest of the batting showed that everyone contributed to take the lads to 102 for 8.
On the batting front Gabriel Broadhurst (30 retired) continued his fine start to the season, Daniel Parry opened the batting for the first time scoring 31 confirmed his managers faith in his ability and temperament as an opener. The rest of the batting showed that everyone contributed to take the lads to 102 for 8.
The bowling performance again showed that the lads are a talented bunch with wickets for 7 of the 9 bowlers. Alex Squires and Rob Schofield took 2 wickets a piece opening the bowling and put the Portsmouth players under pressure with 2 wickets in the first 2 overs.
The bowling performance was backed up with some excellent fielding and catching
Ben Ascombe 2, Dan May, Rory Classen and 1 for Josh Bird in his first game as wicketkeeper, in which I understand that he kept very well giving the manager a possible selection issue in the future.

Petersfield 3rd XI vs Ashford Hill 2nd XI

Ashford Hill 183 ao
Petersfield 121 ao

Ashford Hill won by 62 runs

Was it really only five weeks ago that the Thirds were sweltering in temperatures pushing 30 degrees at Longparish? This Saturday saw the team dispatched to yet another remote location in the far reaches of north Hampshire to play Ashford Hill. Conditions were bleak – cold, wet, windy, horrible.

Bowling first, despite freezing fingers and wearing as many sweaters as possible while retaining at least some ability to remain mobile in the field, Petersfield battled hard to bowl out the opposition for 183.

Loose deliveries were punished unerringly and ‘Field’s attack was further frustrated by a last wicket partnership where the combined ages of the batsmen must have been well into three figures.

Rory Newman bowled superbly to pick up his first ‘five-fer’ of the season (10-1-44-5), while fellow U15 Alex Thomas did his fantasy league ratings no harm at all with four catches behind the stumps, three off Newman. The other wicket-takers were Smith (2), with Godman and O’Brien picking up one each. Windebank (snr) and Phipps took two smart catches in the deep.

In response, Petersfield got off to their traditional sluggish start and also lost two quick wickets. Thomas and May got the innings back on track with a partnership of 83, May looking in great touch in compiling an authoritative 57.

The game was there to be won but disaster struck with Thomas calamitously run-out for 23. This triggered a collapse, as Petersfield lost their last seven wickets for 34 runs, with only Newman (15) showing some resistance as the required run rate began to climb.

This was a classic encounter of the wily old veterans against the enthusiastic young bucks (and it’s not often that the venerable Mark Holloway can be counted as the latter). On this occasion the more seasoned players of Ashford Hill managed to prevail.

Petersfield U15s vs Fareham & Crofton

Petersfield U15s picked up their second victory on the trot with a convincing 9-wicket win against Fareham & Crofton.
Losing the toss and bowling first, the match followed a similar pattern to Petersfield’s previous home fixture. With our attack possibly showing some signs of ring-rustiness not having played for a fortnight, Fareham progressed steadily to 50 without loss before Aaron Murray (2 for 28) sensationally struck with a double-wicket maiden.
Despite a fighting 38 from Southern, wickets began to fall steadily, with Caddick (2 for 12) the pick of the bowlers proving a real handful with his pace and accuracy. Not even the unwanted distraction of some of the more odious examples of local pond life walking provocatively across the middle of the field could put the Petersfield paceman off his stride during an electric second spell.
Ben Cox (2 for 23) was the other wicket-taker, with Newman and Hiscock also bowling well and unlucky not to strike.
Chasing 114, Petersfield lost skipper Newman early on, unlucky to be judged caught behind off McMain. But this only brought Friend (50*) and Hiscock (44*) together, who calmly knocked off the runs showing real flare and exemplary shot selection. In what was a near-perfect run chase, the only doubt was who would get to their half-century first!
Despite some looseness in the field this was an impressive all-round performance from the U15s and sets the team up nicely for two tough fixtures to come against Hambledon (a) and Portsmouth (h).

Petersfield U11B vs Steep

On an unusually cloudy day, the B team took on local rivals, Steep. Following their close match with Portsmouth and Southsea, the B side had high expectations that a win was not far away. Steep, though, had a few district players and were not going to be an easy target.

Tommy Mathews won the toss and decided to put Steep in. Steep showed their intend from the start and dispatched the first 4 overs for 24, this continued and wickets were few and far between. Thomas Stevens got the first wicket with a good stumping by Jack Butcher. Ben Dodds grabbed the second, bowled and also wicker maiden. His brother was not to be out done and grabbed a wicket too, again stumped by Jack. Two final wickets fell, going to Luke McQuire (caught) and Ben Kay (bowled). Steep finishing on 298 (scores start at 200 in pairs with -5 for each wicket).

In reply, the opening pair of Cameron Porteous and Ben Dodds faced some quick and accurate bowling, losing a wicket and taking the score to 210 after 4 overs. Jack Butcher and Ben Kay were next, with Jack finding three boundaries but also being bowled. Score was up to 236. Hector Pocock and Luke McQuire struggled to score and with another wicket falling the score was at 245. Two pairs left and first Thomas Stevens and Henry Dodds were at the crease. Losing two more wickets and taking the score back to 240. The final pairing was Tommy Mathews and Charles Haydon, and Tommy went after some boundaries. Both Charles and Tommy lost a wicket and Petersfield finished on 256.

Petersfield lose by 42 runs.

Top score Tommy with 10.
Bowling Ben Dodds 1 for 6 and
Tommy bowled his 3 overs for just 10 runs being unlucky not to take a wicket.

Team
Tommy Mathews, Cameron Porteous, Thomas Stevens, Jack Butcher, Charles Haydon, Hector Pocock, Ben Kay, Luke McQuire, Ben and Henry Dodds

Petersfield 3rd XI vs Overton 3rd XI

After finally locating the ground (tip: don’t rely on the sat nav because you end up in a housing estate), Petersfield batted first on an artificial strip with occasional exaggerated bounce.

The nerves of the waiting batsmen weren’t helped by a wandering gazebo, doubling up as a temporary ‘pavilion’, which kept getting detached from its moorings in the blustery conditions, threatening to take out our lower-middle order.

On the field of play, batting was a struggle against some tight bowling, skipper Stratford-Tuke leading the way with a fluent 36. Some bold attacking shots from Newman (23) in the late stages of the innings took the score to 126, which was probably only about 20-30 runs short of a really competitive total given the conditions.

Defending a low score was always going to be tricky, but opening bowlers Godman and Newman ripped into the Overton top order. Wickets fell regularly and U15 Ben Cox sustained the pressure with a fantastic spell of controlled swing bowling (3 for 21).

With the opposition a man down due to injury and beginning to panic, victory for Petersfield looked a real possibility. The fielding was keen but Overton managed to scramble home – just – with two wickets to spare.

This was a spirited performance by an inexperienced Petersfield XI. With a few more runs on the board a first victory of the season surely can’t be far away.

Petersfield U9B vs Portsmouth Community

On a very windy and drizzly evening the U9Bs did the club proud with their enthusiasm and determination. Batting first they defended well and only lost 3 wickets. Jamie Allardice top scored with 11 - hitting his first 2 balls for 4. Max Mullen scored 8 and Theo Truss 4.

Petersfield finished on 264. The calling and running between the wickets was excellent.

As the wind got stronger and the drizzle wetter, Petersfield fielded and at the half way point Portsmouth and Southsea were 231-2. Alex Chun bowled straight and fast and got 2 wickets. However with fingers beginning to freeze and the ball getting wetter it was difficult for the bowlers to keep straight and a few too many wides meant that Portsmouth and Southsea sneaked home by 14 runs.

Pick of the bowlers was Alex Chun with 3-9, Max Mullen 0-4, Theo Truss 0-8 and Freddie Barham 0-10

Team: Fergus Evans, Nicholas Ross, Theo Truss, Alfred Muir, Freddie Barham, Alex Chun, Max Mullen, Jamie Allardice

Petersfield U11A vs Hambledon

On a cold and damp evening, Petersfield took on Hambledon, whose side contained 4 Hampshire players as well as several district players. With Petersfield having 1 Hampshire and 2 district this was going to be a tough match.

Hambledon won the toss and elected to bat. The opening bowlers of Ben Turk and Ben Anscombe applied early pressure, both finding swing and being very unlucky not to get a wicket. Two edges just passed slip found the boundary but runs were hard to come by as Petersfield fielded well. Matt Friend and William Milner- Smith took over the mantle and kept things tight and after 8 overs the score was 22.

Gabriel Broadhurst was next to bowl and he got the break through with a well taken catch from Ben Anscombe at square leg. The very next ball saw Gabrielle grab his second, bowling the new batsman. He missed his hat trick.

The batsman knew they needed runs and every ball that was slightly short or on leg was being dispatched to the boundary. All of the bowlers were receiving the same but Petersfield stayed strong. With 16 overs gone the score was on 93. Rain was falling, and Hambledon were pushing but with one over remaining they were on 122. The final over went for 22, leaving Hambledon on 144/3.

The target was set and the rain was still falling. It was more like a winters day. Matt Friend and Ossian Tate opened the response and runs were coming mostly from well run byes. In the third over, Matt was bowled for 0 bringing in Gabriel Broadhurst. With Ossian, they pressed the score on. Some glorious boundaries from Gabriel and some well placed singles from Ossian. With the score on 36 in the sixth over, Ossian was unlucky to be adjudged stumped for 9. In came Ben Turk. Gabriel retired soon after on 21 and Ben retired shortly after with a quick fire 21 of his own. The score now on 78 after 10 overs. Petersfield were ahead of the scoring and Ben Anscombe added a quick 13, but this is where the scoring stopped! At 93 for 3 at the end of the 13th over, the target was 51 runs to win with 7 overs left. The rain was still falling but the bowlers now found their line and a hat trick saw Kit Classen, Joe Clarke and Alfie Casson all back in the clubhouse without scoring. Seb Kay offered some resistance but was caught for 3. Then a mix up saw Max Hendrick ran out.

With the rule that retired players cannot return, Petersfield's innings closed on 95 for 8 in the 15th over.

A really good effort against a very good side, our players can be proud of a decent performance in testing conditions.

Hambledon 144/3 Petersfield 95/8 lost by 49 runs

Team
Matt Friend, Ossian Tate, Gabriel Broadhurst, Ben Turk, Ben Anscombe, Seb Kay, Kit Classen, Joe Clarke, Alfie Casson, Max Hendrick, William Milner-Smith

Petersfield 1st XI vs Farley

Petersfield played their first home league match of the season at the Heath hoping to build on last weeks victory at Dinton.

Field won the toss and elected to bat on a hard, flat track. The opening pair Will Rice and Andy Salmon put on their second successive 50 run partnership before Rice fell in the 12th over. Salmon followed shortly afterwards for an aggressive 30.

Skipper Ash Spencer and John McGuire added another 30 to the total before McGuire fell LBW in the 20th over. This brought Harry Hannam to the crease who along with Spencer took to the Farley attack stroking the ball to all parts of the ground.

They both reached their half century with the pair putting on 131 runs in just 15 overs before Hannam fell for 79.

Chris Russell and Jack Hannam ran well with Spencer adding 46 from the last five overs. Spencer finished unbeaten on 79 with a total of 273 for just 5 wickets.

Blanks and Caddick opened up for Petersfield bowling tight and putting early pressure on Farley, although it was a change of pace in Chris Wood which got the breakthrough.

Ramsey was the only batsman that went at the Petersfield attack bringing up his half century in quick time. The return of Nicky Caddick paid off as he blew away the middle order with a hostile spell of pace bowling. With Ramsey still hitting the ball to all parts of the ground, Spencer turned to veteran Chris Russell whose left arm spin bamboozled the tail picking up two quick wickets. A superb piece of fielding by Harry Hannam wrapped up the innings giving Field a convincing 81 run victory.

Petersfield U11B vs Portsmouth and Southsea

We batted frst and we put on 44 runs for the first 8 overs, unfortunately their wicket-keeper started to play very well and they managed to take 10 wickets so our total was 240.

Batting highlights were Camerons 18 runs, followed by Thomas with 8, Jack with 7 and Tommy with 6. If we hadn't lost 10 wickets we'd have had a score of 290.

With a modest total of 240 to defend, we had to get off to a good start, our bowling was excellent throughout, the first 8 overs they only scored 10 runs which was tremendous. The game was always close, but they just pulled ahead towards the end and won by 14 runs.

The difference in the match was we took 5 wickets to their 10, which was mainly down to their wicket keeper stumping our guys when some of their bowling was slow and looping encouraging our guys out of their creases to hit the ball, which gave him the chance. Our bowling was much faster making stumpings much harder for us.

Standout bowling performances from Harvey who bowled 3 overs for 10 runs and took 2 wickets, Thomas who bowled 3 overs for 7 runs and took 1 wicket, Tommy who bowled 2 overs for 5 runs and took 1 wicket and Ben Kay who bowled 2 overs for 9 runs and took 1 wicket, but as I say everyone bowled well, we gave away far fewer extras this match, keep up the good work.

Petersfield U11As vs Locksheath

A lovely sunny evening at Penns and Matt Friend won the toss and elected to bat. Matt opened with William Milner-Smith but the Locks Heath bowlers of Sam Woodham and Sam Gardner were bowling superbly. A mix up saw William ran out in the 4th over with the score on just 3. This brought Gabriel Broadhurst to the crease. The Locks Heath bowlers continued to bowl tightly and their fielding was excellent. Runs were in short supply and Matt Friend was bowled in the 10th over with the score on 28. Ossian Tate joined Gabriel and they set about scoring some quick runs. Gabriel struck 3 fours and Ossian weighed in with some quick 1s and 2s. Gabriel retired on reaching 20 in the 17 over with the score now on 74 and a partnership of 46. With three overs left, first Ben Turk (9 from 6 balls) and then Seb Kay (8 from 8)joined Ossian, both being caught. Max Hendricks was bowled for 0 and Ben Anscombe made a single off the last ball. Ossian finishing on an unbeaten 15 and Petersfield closing on 95 for 5.

Locks Heath looked to chase but Ben Anscombe and Ben Turk tied them down with a brilliant opening four overs. Ben A got the first wicket caught by Ben T. Matt Friend then bowled three tight overs grabbing 2 wickets. For Locks Heath, only Jack Mennel was resisting and retired not out on a good 22. Wickets continued to fall and catches were being taking. Alfie Casson held a brilliant catch behind the stumps. Gabriel bowled his 3 overs and was unlucky to only take 1 wicket, bowling a spell of lively spin. Joe Clarke, Joe Eglestaff, Seb Kay and Ossian Tate all bowled an over, keeping on top of the score. Then Max Hendricks took over and what a devastating spell it was. He took 3 wickets for only 4 runs in his three overs and with William Milner-Smith grabbing a wicket maiden it was very nearly over. Ben Anscombe bowled the final over and his third ball hit the Locks Heath player who had to retire hurt. Locks Heath finishing on 53 all out.

Petersfield U11A record a first league win by 42 runs.

Petersfield U15s vs Havant

Petersfield U15s bounced back from their opening day defeat against Portsmouth in emphatic fashion, comfortably beating Havant by 7 wickets at the Heath.

The foundations for this victory were laid down by a superb performance from the bowling attack, with Rory Newman (2 for 10) and Aaron Murray (2 for 13) leading the way, well supported by a miserly Ben Cox (1 for 7 off 3 overs) and Nicky Caddick (1 for 25), who exploited the uneven nature of the wicket to great effect with his pace.

The fielding effort, greatly improved, featured two impressive catches by skipper Newman at mid-off.

Chasing Havant’s score of 87, Jordan Hiscock (32) and Ben Friend (37 not out) paced Petersfield’s reply perfectly. With Alex Thomas (6 not out) keeping a cool head at the death, the winning total was reached with 11 balls to spare.

This was a great all-round performance, full of spirit and sensible, skilful cricket. It will give the team a massive confidence boost for the tougher matches ahead.

Petersfield U13s vs Steep

Well after what seems like a long 3 or 4 weeks since starting this job we finally got the season under way with another rearranged fixture with local rivals Steep.
On a nice evening at the Heath Petersfield won the toss and chose to bowl first with new lad Oliver Simpson and player of the season Tom Pocock (1-18) opening the bowling. Tom took the first wicket with a very good return catch; from the first ball of the next over Gabriel Broadhurst (2-5) bowled the other opener to leave Steep 2 down for 10 from 3 overs. J Nobel (23) then launched a counter attack with some lovely shots. Wickets went down at the other end at regular intervals with Will Grange taking the wicket of the dangerous J Nobel and Rob Schofield running out G.Crew.
The bowling again was tight with only the occasional bad balls being dispatched over the boundary for 4. Josh Bird (0 for 1 off 2 over’s) and Dan Parry (0 for 6 off his 2 over’s) bowled some very tidy and tight over’s.
The bad balls being punished helped push the scoring along, with the Steep middle order playing well to keep the momentum going (M.Edmundson making16) before Oliver Simpson returned to take 2 wickets with his first and last ball of the final over but also conceded a few runs to leave him with figures of 3 for 22 from his 3 over’s. Steep having set Petersfield 107 to win the match
Petersfield opened with last year’s successful opening partnership of Joe Mayall (15) and Tom Pocock (0), Gabriel Broadhust (30 retired) joined Joe in the middle after Tom was out bowled and between them took the scoring swiftly along with Joe hitting some lusty blows including a six over cow corner before being bowled by J Thompson trying to repeat the 6. Gabriel Broadhust (30 retired) was playing some beautiful cover drives and all was going well until Oliver Simpson (3) was run out trying to run a 2nd having not listened to the call of NO from his partner. With Gabriel on 30 he retired n the same ball which really knocked the stuffing out of Petersfield effectively losing 2 wickets in one ball.
Robert Schofield (9) and Daniel Parry (13) kept the momentum going and put the pressure on the bowlers who struggled a bit with their line and some nice shots through the offside. J Nobel (3-22) returned to the attack and took a wicket in his first over back and another in his last with a ball that crept under Rory Classens bat giving him no chance of keeping it out. Will Grange was then bowled by J Thompson(2 for 9), Josh Brid (11) then took the score on to 100 – 8 giving Petersfield a chance off the final over needing 7 to win the game. Unfortuantely for Petersifled and to the delight of Steep Josh was out 2nd ball of the over leaving Daniel May and Tom Thompsett to see out the last 4 balls without scoring.
A tight game played in a great spirit, congratulations to Steep but a fantastic effort from Petersfield in their first game of the season

Petersfield U15s vs Portsmouth

St Helens cricket ground, Southsea, can be an inhospitable place to visit at the best of times, with the wind whipping off the Solent and a home team packed with district and county players with a lot to say for themselves. And so it proved on Thursday when Petersfield U15s kicked off their season against Portsmouth U15s.
Winning the toss, Petersfield asked Portsmouth to bat first and put in a solid bowling display with tidy performances from captain Rory Newman (1 for 22), Jordan Hiscock (1 for 28) and Nicky Caddick (0 for 18).

Despite some ground-fielding lapses, there were some excellent catches taken by Ben Friend and Rafe Cains, as well as an early candidate for ‘catch of the season’ from Rob Straw. Thanks also to some clever footwork from Aaron Murray that resulted in a run-out, Petersfield did well to restrict a strong opposition batting line-up to 130 for 4.

However on a wicket about as reliable as the Welsh rugby team’s back division, Petersfield’s reply got off to the worst possible start, unluckily losing opener Ben Friend first ball to a leading edge. Despite some resistance from Jordan Hiscock (12) and Ben Cox (11), batting was a struggle and the innings failed to recover against some quick, hostile bowling in fading light.

Defeat by 95 runs was a tough introduction to A league cricket for Petersfield. However there were plenty of promising signs that hinted at a brighter future for the team this season.

Petersfield U11A vs Portsmouth

For most of the Petersfield side, this was their first 20 overs game not played in pairs. Matt Friend was asked to bat by the opposing captain. Matt and Seb Kay opended the innings, but Portsmouth struck in the 2nd over. Ben Anscombe joined Matt Friend at the wicket and they started to tick the score over. With the score on 26, Ben went for a quick single, but a direct hit saw him run out. Ben Turk was next in, and with the assured Matt Friend, they took the score on to 44, but Ben Turk was then caught behind for 9. At number five was Ossian Tate, who joined Matt Friend in the 11th over, with 8.3 overs still to go. With the fielders closing in, Ossian put the first ball away for a 4. Matt was next to lose his wicket, run out by another direct hit. Alfie Casson joined Ossian and they moved the score up to 65 before Alfie was caught, bring Max Hendrick in. Max and Ossian stayed to the end both finishing not out, with Ossian on 9 and Max on 3. A total of 87 for 5, was a respectable start. Some excellent Portsmouth bowling and fielding, restricting the total.

In reply, Portsmouth find themselves 2 wickets down after 5 overs, with excellent bowling from Ben Turk, Ben Anscombe and Matt Friend. Ossian Tate, Seb Kay, Max Hendricks and William Milner-Smith, provided the rest of the bowling.3 catches went down, but the fielding was good, with some solid stops by Harvey Baker, Ben Kay and Kit Classen. Seb Kay was unlucky not to take a catch and Ossian Tate almost had a wicket but the ball alluded the keeper, Alfie Casson. With Portsmouth closing in Matt Friend returned to grab a second wicket. Portsmouth scored the winning run in the 18th over, so winning by 7 wickets.

Final Score - Petersfield A 87/5 Portsmouth 88/3 in 17.3

Team:
Matt Friend - Captain, Ben Turk, Ben Anscombe, Ossian Tate, Alfie Casson, Kit Classen, Seb Kay, William Milner-Smith, Harvey Baker, Max Hendrick, Ben Kay

Petersfield 1st XI vs Steep

Petersfield took on local rivals Steep hoping to win their final pre season friendly before their eagerly anticipated league start.

Steep won the toss and elected to bat on a superb batting track. Blanks and Maisey opened up and restricted the home side in the opening overs. Skipper Ash Spencer turned to Jack Hannam in search of a break through which paid off dismissing the dangerous Knight for 23. Blanks picked up fellow opener Callingham leaving Steep with some rebuilding to do.

Maisey and debutant Caddick picked up a wicket a piece leaving Steep in trouble early in the innings. G Hughes held Steep together batting throughout the innings with an unbeaten half century. Unfortunately no other Steep batsman really got going and they ended up on 187 for 9 from 40. Youngster Caddick finishing with 2 for 24 from six overs, marking a very memorable debut.

Field had an awful start losing opener Chris Wood in the first over bowled by Callingham for a duck. This brought skipper Ash Spencer to the crease along side Will Rice. The pair ran well and put away the bad ball to bring up the hundred at drinks. Spencer accelerated after the break to bring up his half century shortly followed by Rice an over later.

After setting a solid foundation for the visitors Spencer was dismissed for a well crafted 56 to Mercer. Harry Hannam and Rice pushed the run rate along with the latter scoring a flurry of boundaries to push him into the 90’s. With Rice set on 99 he smashed a cover drive for 4 bringing up and excellent ton only to be dismissed the following ball by Lewis.

Harry Hannam followed shortly afterwards attempting to finish the game with a big hit bowled by Mercer. Extras sealed victory the following over giving Petersfield an emphatic win over their local rivals proving that they are capable of competing at a higher standard of cricket.

Petersfield 1st XI vs Selsey

Petersfield took on Sussex based Selsey for the second of their pre season friendlies hoping to improve on last week’s loss against Grayswood.

Selsey won the the toss and and didn’t hesitate in electing to bat. Petersfield bolstered by the the return of skipper Ash Spencer immediately took the game to the opposition reducing the hosts to 21 for 2 from just 4 overs mainly due to a suburb opening spell from newcomer Billy Maisey and some sharp catches from Will Rice.

Selsey kept the run rate moving along steadily until Nigel Straw dismissed the stubborn A Horner for 13 with Maisey taking a great reflex catch in the slips.

The remainder of the home side supported C Mason well for his half century despite J Hannam and Liam Charles picking up a wicket apiece. However this only brought the return of Christie Salmon into the attack who annihilated the lower order with a spell of hostile yet accurate bowling reducing the home side to 175 for 8. Christie finished with superb figures of 3 wickets from 8 overs for just 18 runs.

Field got off to a slow start and suffered an early blow losing the dangerous Rice in the 5th over. Then losing skipper Ash Spencer to an LBW decision the following over field looked in trouble at 16 for 2. This brought debutant Harry Hannam to the crease who smashed 3 of his first 5 balls for 4 giving field hope after a poor start.

Unfortunately he too fell LBW bringing Maisey to the crease with the ever reliable Andy Salmon. The pair added 50 for the 4th wicket until Maisey was bowled by Kochumon for a classy 28.

The lower order swiftly followed leaving Matt and Christie Salmon; Petersfield’s last hope of salvaging something from the game to grind out the last few overs. Sadly Matt was run out by a superb piece of fielding and Christie ended up on 20* with Petersfield falling 30 runs short.

Petersfield 1st XI vs Grayswood

Petersfield travelled to Grayswood for the first of their pre season friendly’s.
Stand in skipper Jack Hannam won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that looked likely to deteriorate as the day went on.

Openers Fred Patten and Will Rice worked the ball into the gaps well and pushed singles to give the side a solid platform.
Patten holed out to spinner Nobes in the 16th over with the score on 56 after making a patient 24.
This bought Billy Maisey to the crease who along with Rice accelerated the run rate, culminating with Rice bringing up his half century with a towering six over the pavilion.
Maisey fell in the 25th over with field at 116 for 2 a good score looked on the cards. However this triggered a collapse which saw three wickets fall in the next three overs including the excellent Rice who made 56.
The lower order never really got going and Petersfield ended the day on 160 for 8 with Morton the stand out bowler.

Petersfield made a great start with Nigel Straw running out A.Kent in the first over with a direct hit. Callum Kent and Broughton batted well, seeing off openers Blanks and Maisey who bowled with good control.
A change of pace brought the breakthrough with spinner Toby Austin removing Kent for a solid 39. Broughton quickly followed, the experienced Nigel Straw trapping him LBW.
Shaun Blanks, Maisey and Patten bowled well bringing a couple of wickets however Jackson put away the bad ball to see Grayswood home in the 39th over.
A good effort from Petersfield for a first game, five dropped catches dictating the end result.
