Petersfield took on local rivals Steep hoping to win their final pre season friendly before their eagerly anticipated league start.
Steep won the toss and elected to bat on a superb batting track. Blanks and Maisey opened up and restricted the home side in the opening overs. Skipper Ash Spencer turned to Jack Hannam in search of a break through which paid off dismissing the dangerous Knight for 23. Blanks picked up fellow opener Callingham leaving Steep with some rebuilding to do.
Maisey and debutant Caddick picked up a wicket a piece leaving Steep in trouble early in the innings. G Hughes held Steep together batting throughout the innings with an unbeaten half century. Unfortunately no other Steep batsman really got going and they ended up on 187 for 9 from 40. Youngster Caddick finishing with 2 for 24 from six overs, marking a very memorable debut.
Field had an awful start losing opener Chris Wood in the first over bowled by Callingham for a duck. This brought skipper Ash Spencer to the crease along side Will Rice. The pair ran well and put away the bad ball to bring up the hundred at drinks. Spencer accelerated after the break to bring up his half century shortly followed by Rice an over later.
After setting a solid foundation for the visitors Spencer was dismissed for a well crafted 56 to Mercer. Harry Hannam and Rice pushed the run rate along with the latter scoring a flurry of boundaries to push him into the 90’s. With Rice set on 99 he smashed a cover drive for 4 bringing up and excellent ton only to be dismissed the following ball by Lewis.
Harry Hannam followed shortly afterwards attempting to finish the game with a big hit bowled by Mercer. Extras sealed victory the following over giving Petersfield an emphatic win over their local rivals proving that they are capable of competing at a higher standard of cricket.
