Just a quick report to say we had 12 boys representing Petersfield U11s at the Rose Bowl Zooter Challenge last night.
The weather was superb and Kevan was really proud at how everyone played. The challenge consisted of 5 elements - high catching, death bowling, slip spectacular catches, run outs and six hitting, culminating in a bowl off to see which team would be the guard of honour for the 20/20 Hampshire v Sussex match.
We narrowly lost in the bowl off. Each team had to hit the stumps three times with a stump removed after each hit! Ossian Tate hit with the second ball, then Jack Butcher hit but we couldn't hit the last one, Sparshalt just pipping us.
We got to watch a great game of 20/20 and Hampshire strode to a superb victory.
Many thanks to Kevan tate who orgainsed it all and managed the boys at the Rose Bowl. Kevan also wished to thank all the parents and boys for coming and also to Craig Stevens and Mark Friend for assisting him on the evening.

Petersfield U15s vs Portsmouth and Southsea
Match abandoned due to rain
A frustrating evening for the U15s against Portsmouth & Southsea at the Heath, where persistent rain eventually forced the abandonment of what was shaping up to be an exciting contest.
Losing the toss and batting first for the first time this season, Petersfield got off to a good start with Friend, Newman, Hiscock and Caddick all getting into double figures. However conditions were difficult on a wicket that got progressively slower and lower, and the team were bowled out before the end of their allotted overs, for 94. Even so, in the circumstances, this was a competitive total.
With the weather worsening, there followed a frenetic passage of play in the second innings as both sides pushed hard for a result. A flurry of boundaries, wickets, run-outs and run-out attempts followed, before the umpires bowed to the inevitable and called the game off with P&S 22 for 3 off 4 overs and ahead of the required run rate.
The two teams will try again on Tuesday, hopefully with better weather!

Petersfield U17s vs Grayshott
Petersfield made it through to the Quarter Final of the Hampshire Cup in a thrilling match against Grayshott at Penns Place.
Winning the toss, Grayshott decided to bat on a damp wicket and the Moseley brothers got them off to their usual good start. Nicky Caddick bowled tidily and the break through was made when Christie Salmon came on to bowl. By this time Grayshott had reached 59 off 9 overs and had set themselves up for a good total. Matt Clark joined Salmon and apart from from the stray ball swinging down the leg side kept the run rate under control. Clark accounted for Wrenn and Salmon got the important wick of S Moseley. When Oscar Windebank trapped Parkes LBW with his first ball, Grayshott were 91-4 off 15 overs.
Phillimore then came to the wicket and produced a sparkling innings of 36 not out to get Grayshott up to a respectable total of 130. Salmon finished with 2-23 and Windebank 2-17.
Matt Clarke and Matt Crouch got petersfield off to a solid start with 21 off 4 overs but then got a bit bogged down especially after Crouch was hit where the sun doesn't shine! he lofted one to cover shortly afterwards and Ben Friend joined Clarke. However when Clarke was out soon followed by Oli Shapley Petersfield were only 39-3 off 10 overs and well behind the run rate.
Christie Salmon came to the wicket and stepped up the pace. he was well supported by all his partners who ran hard which was shown by the 2 run outs. However they were putting Grayshott under pressure and mistkaes were starting to be made. Friend finished with a useful 20 but Salmon accelerated and he reached his 50 with a big 6 over mid wicket. Just 4 more were needed and a long hop delivered the next ball looked to be the one. But a thick edge lobbed the ball to mid on and Grayshott had their tails up. Sam Howe was run out and Bob Wemyss was bolwed with a yorker with the 3rd ball of the last over, This brought Nicky Caddick to the wicket who defended the next ball. With 2 balls and 1 wicket left, Caddick got bat on ball and scampered through for the winning run.
This was a great win against a good Grayshott team and coach Andy Salmon was delighted with his teams first win over them in all the years that they had been playing them.

Petersfield Girls Perform at the 1st ever England Test Match at the Rose Bowl
Peterfield Girls cricket team were lucky enough to perform an on pitch demonstration match against Redlynche and Hale cricket club during the lunch interval of England’s test match at the Rose Bowl on Saturday.
Despite the best efforts of the rain the girls were thrilled to play a game at such a great venue in front of a full house of over 20,000 spectators.
Highlights included being shown on the big screens, Jess taking a wicket with the 1st ball of the day and Lorna, Jess, Katie P and Katherine all hitting 4’s to the boundary rope. Katie Nolan stole the show with a big six over fine leg and the advertising hoardings and into the crowd. The coach had to send her round to apologise to the lady who nearly lost her lunch!
Many thanks go to the Hampshire ECB officials who organised the day and to the ground staff at the Rose Bowl who still allowed us onto the pitch despite the huge amount of work that they had to do on such a wet day.
Many thanks also to Chris Russell and Anthony Williams who accompanied the girls on the day.

Petersfield U11Bs vs Hambledon B
Petersfield won the toss and put Hambledon into bat on an overcast morning. The Kay brothers Ben and Seb took 2 early wickets which restricted Hambledon's openers. Petersfield's bowlers all bowled well to stop Hambledon pulling away. A wicket maiden by Charlie Gaisford mid innings started to make Hambledon's task even harder.
Petersfield fielded superbly. Charlie Gaisford made a brave stop on the boundary and Ben Ringrose-Voase was superb in his first match. Ben Anscombe took a wicket at the end of the innings to restrict Hambledon to 284.
Seb Kay (10) and Kit Claason (5) got Petersfield off to a great start with 29 off the first 4 overs and Max Hendrick and Ben Ringrose-Voase kept the momentum going taking the score to 250 after 8 overs. Luke McGuire and Charlie Gaisford faced some good bowling but still kept Petersfield in the game before ben kay and James Bradley put on 19 to set the game up for a very close finish. A very unfortunate deflection off the bowler's stumps and a superb piece of fielding with a direct hit ran Ben Kay out and therefore Petersfield were left with 24 runs to get off the last 4 overs. A great effort by Ben Anscombe (12) and Thomas Stevens got the team to within 14 but 3 wickets in the last 3 overs meant that Hambledon just scraped through.
Congratulations to all the team on a great effort - a win is not too far away.

Peetrsfield Girls vs Grayshott
Monday evening saw the Petersfield girls travel to Grayshott for a 20 over game. Bowling 1st Petersfield started well taking 4 wickets and restricting Grayshott to only 27 runs after 12 overs with the wickets being shared between Katie P, Emma and Jess with Emma taking another caught and bowled chance from her leg spin bowling. Some fine power hitting from the last Grayshott pair, who hit 4 fours between them, took the closing score to 86 for 5. Katie P, who is rapidly establishing herself as one of Petersfield’s best fielders this season, taking a fine catch in the deep off of the final ball of the innings.
In reply Lorna and Leah started well for Petersfield scoring 18 runs from the 1st 4 overs, but once again wickets fell at regular intervals to leave Petersfield ever so slightly ahead on 29 for 4 after 12 overs of their reply. Despite matching Grayshott’s boundary count in the last few overs the wickets continued to fall leaving Petersfield on 53 for 7 at the close.
Jess top scored with 16 runs with Lorna batting well in support. Both Katie’s and Chloe topped the bowling with some good all round fielding supporting the bowlers well.

Petersfield 1st XI vs Donnington
Petersfield won the toss and elected to bat at mid-table Donnington.
Field made yet another good start with the evergreen Andy Salmon and Will Rice posting an opening stand of 65 before Salmon fell trying to push on. Rice was bowled shortly afterwards leaving Ash Spencer and Harry Hannam to rebuild the innings. The pair added 57 for the third wicket until Spencer was caught behind by a ball which jumped off a length.
Hannam and Maisey ticked the score over until the latter was adjudged LBW for 14 with the score at 162.
Jack Hannam joined his brother adding 30 runs from just 4 overs before Jack holed out attempting to push on. Shaun Blanks and Hannam then put on 63 from just 5 overs before Hannam fell in the 41st for a superb 95. Blanks followed shortly after with an explosive 36 leaving the visitors on 269 for 7.
With the weather looking ominous skipper Ash Spencer turned to Chris Wood to open the bowling alongside Billy Maisey in an attempt to beat the rain, Maisey got the breakthrough bowling Tait for just 7. Nicky Caddick then came on and picked up two quick wickets effectively taking the game away from the hosts.
However Dando and Pearce batted well taking the score into three figures before Christie Salmon clean bowled the dangerous Dando for 66.
Hannam and Blanks picked up a late wicket a piece leaving Donnington on 187 for 7. The win moves Petersfield into second place maintaining their promotion hopes.

Petersfield 3rd XI vs Colden Common
The 3rd XI travelled to Coldon Common with another young side, the weather was threatening and the wicket was springy and had a damp feel. Petersfield won the toss and put Coldon Common in.
A fantastic opening spell of bowling ripped into the opening batsmen: Oscar Windebank took a wicket in his first over and no batsman looked comfortable against him. An attacking 7/2 off side field meant that the batsmen were having to improvise to score runs against accurate bowling this led to frustration and inevitable wickets. Newman bowled Coldon’s most accomplished looking batsman and Windebank picked up two more wickets, his variation was in particular causing the batsmen to guess and he was often taking his own fielders by surprise! The fielding matched the accurate bowling with every chance being taken and the ground fielding was flawless. Perry came on first change and made an impression with his second ball, then a wicket in his second over and two in his third finished off a very dejected Coldon Common. Windebank finished with three wickets, Newman one and Perry four. Thomas took two catches behind the wicket. Coldon Common were all out for 35.
Petersfield faced some accurate bowling but were able to comfortably reach their target to win by nine wickets, with Stratford-Tuke 18 not out and Will Jameson 9 not out. An emphatic victory to record the first win of the season.

Petersfield Girls at the Portsmouth Tournament
Petersfield entered the Portsmouth tournament for the second successive year with a similar team to last year when they finished 5th in this tournament.
Our extra 12 months of training and experience showed when we despatched both Hursley Park and Portsmouth B in our opening two games during which we only lost 2 wickets. We knew that we could perform better and a very close game with Lock’s Heath which would decide the group winners followed. Batting 1st Petersfield scored 38 for 2 with contributions from every player and 4’s for Katie Nolan, Jess and Leah. In reply Lock’s Heath were always behind the run rate and at the halfway point only had 7 runs on the board for the loss of 3 wickets. However a strong fight back ensued leaving Lock’s Heath only requiring 3 runs from the final over. New Captain for the season, Jess, asked Molly to bowl and after 5 balls only 1 run had been scored and things were looking good however a stop on the boundary from Katherine and a scrambled 2 runs from the final ball ensured that this game finished as a tie. As both teams had identical points at the top of the group a bowl off then took place to decide the group winners with Lock’s Heath coming out on top.
This result saw us play our nemesis and the home side Portsmouth A in our semi-final. A brilliant start saw Portsmouth 3 wickets down after just 2.1 overs and the Portsmouth coach had his head in his hands however sensible batting saw Portsmouth recover slightly to score 43 for 3 leaving us with an achievable target to win. A 4 from the second ball of our innings and 8 runs from the 1st over gave us hope however this proved to be the high point of our run chase as Portsmouth ripped through our batting line up with some quality pace bowling leaving us well short and 10 wickets down at the end. A special mention should go to Georgie from Portsmouth who took 6 of our wickets in a great spell of fast bowling.
Could Petersfield recover to play Fair Oak in the 3rd place play off? Batting 1st we improved throughout our innings which included a special straight 6 from Lorna which earnt the team ice creams from the coach to finish on 37 for 4. Thankfully the girls put in their best bowling performance of the tournament to put pressure on Fair Oak but a another straight 6 from the opposition put them back on course until Katherine took 2 wickets in the penultimate over to leave Fair Oak 4 runs short on 33 for 4 and Petersfield with the Bronze medal.
The top batter for the day was once again Katie with an impressive 32 runs and she was supported well by the ever improving Lorna with 23 runs. The bowling was well lead once again by Molly with Leah and Emma having an uncanny knack of taking regular wickets with 9 wickets on the day between them. Everyone fielded bravely with Jess proving to be a superb captain throughout the day.

Petersfield Girls vs Portsmouth
The 1st game of the season saw Petersfield take on Portsmouth at the Heath. Batting first Petersfield started well against a side that we know to be one of the strongest in the area however the frequent loss of wickets kept holding us back.
A strong partnership between Lois and Polly, both playing their 1st competitive games for the club, saw us add 11 runs for the 4th pair, Lois hitting 2 4’s in the process and this was followed by a quick 8 runs from Emma in the last pair taking the Petersfield score to 260 for the loss of 5 wickets.
In reply Portsmouth started slowly especially after some good opening bowling from Molly however their stronger batters were still to come and a flurry of boundaries put Portsmouth close to their target with 5 overs to play. However a second direct hit run out from Katie Pegden saw Portsmouth wobble but then regain their composure to finish on 274 for 5, a winning margin of 14 runs.
Emma top scored with a net 8 runs. Chloe, Molly and Jess all bowled well and Katie was the star fielder with her 2 run outs late on.

Petersfield U15s vs Portsmouth
Petersfield lost by 33 runs
The U15s put in a strong performance against league leaders Portsmouth before going down to defeat by 33 runs at the Heath.
The visiting side, batting first, rode their luck at times, their innings a mixture of aggressive shots and streaky edges. Opener Marston made 50 (ret’d) in a total of 145 for 3. Jordan Hiscock, defying doctors’ orders to play in this match with a knee injury, took 2 for 24, both smart stumpings by keeper Alex Thomas.
Nicky Caddick was the other wicket taker and the fielding, with Ben Friend once again outstanding, was the best it’s been all season.
Petersfield’s response was built around a fine half-century by opener Friend (50 ret’d), who put on 50 for the second wicket with Newman (18). Hiscock boldly led an unlikely charge for victory with an attacking 23 off 10 balls, Cox (8*) hit some lovely shots at the death, but ultimately the side came up just short against some tight bowling.
The boys deserve a lot of credit for their much-improved display in this match and have come a long way since the heavy opening day defeat against the same opposition. Their sprit was excellent and they played some fine cricket against a good (and let’s face it, irritatingly cocky and full-of-themselves) Portsmouth outfit.
There are lots of positives to take into the next fixture as the team seeks to do the double over Havant.

Petersfield U11A vs Purbrook
On a sunny but windy evening, Matt Friend again won the toss and into bat went Petersfield. Normal openers, Matt Friend and Ossian Tate, took the field. Purbrook bowlers started well and accurate bowling kept Matt and Ossian at bay. A couple of quick singles and a boundary but with the score on 11, Ossian was bowled, the ball coming around leg and the wind taking it on to the leg stump.
This brought Gabriel Broadhurst to the crease and with Matt they began to build a score. The bowling remained tight but both batted well and retired with 20 runs each.
Ben Turk was undone by a ball that kept low and Joe Clarke was stumped by a quick take by the keeper. Ben Anscombe managed to push the score along, reaching 11 before being caught and with both Joe Eglestaff and Seb Kay unable to breach the field in the final over (both not out), Petersfield finished on 80 for 4.
A tough target to defend, but Ben Turk opened the bowling with a sprightly over. Ben Anscombe had the wind across and against, taking a couple of balls down leg, which were dispatched to the boundary. Matt Friend and Gabriel Broadhurst took over, Matt with the first wicket. There was some great fielding and Ossian made some good stops, returning the ball in to give just a single. The game was tight and Harvey Baker, Joe Clarke and Ossian Tate had an over each, the over from Ossian producing just a single. Seb Kay and Max Hendrick bowled next and then Gabriel returned to take 2 wickets.
The game was poised for a close finish and with 10 needed from 4 overs, Ben Anscombe returned to bowl a superb Maiden. Ben Turk then followed up with just 1 run from his over.
9 needed from 2, Max Hendrick bowled a lovely over, getting a wicket on the 5th ball, but a final ball wide, meant 7 was needed from the final over.
Seb Kay took the ball, but saw his first hit to the boundary. The wind doing tricks with the second, a wide resulted. So just 1 to win from four balls, and a quick scampered single saw Purbrook home to win by 6 wickets and just three balls to spare!
A great game, where Field probably needed a few more runs,

Petersfield 1st XI vs Four Marks
Petersfield hosted Four Marks hoping to make it four wins on the trot boosting their promotion hopes.
Four Marks elected to bat on a hard, dry wicket promising a big score. Christie Salmon had other ideas picking up a wicket in the sixth over with the visitors on just 20.
Hatherley and Burrows pushed the score along until Jack Hannam caught the latter with a low diving catch off the bowling of Nigel Straw. This triggered a collapse with Caddick and Straw reducing the visitors to 74 for 6 just 5 overs later.
Hatherley fell soon after to a superb one handed catch by Christie Salmon giving Caddick his second wicket. The Four Marks lower order fought well to reach 135 in the 32nd over. Nigel Straw finishing with excellent figures of 4 for 19.
Andy Salmon and Fred Patten started the Petersfield innings patiently putting on 88 for the first wicket before Salmon fell for 28 in the 21st over.
Skipper Ash Spencer holed out looking to finish the game early in the 26th over. Harry Hannam joined Patten at the crease with Patten bringing up his half century on his first start of the season. Hannam then hit 17 from his next seven balls giving field a comfortable 8 wicket victory.

Petersfield U13s vs Hambledon B
On a cold and damp morning (not sure how I forgot it is always blowing a gale at Hambledon’s ground but that is as they say another story) Petersfield came up against Hambledon for the 2nd time in 5 days. Petersfield won the toss and decided to bat first and set a target for the hosts to chase.
Dan Parry(10) and Joe (1) could not repeat the heroics of Wednesday’s opening stand but Joe who faced the first over I think got a bit frustrated as the first over he faced was all over the place and went for 13 (1 run off the bat) and was bowled off an inside edge. Dan was 1 of two victims for Woolas playing back to a ball he needed to get forward to with the ball dying after it pitched and hitting the stumps no more than 2 inches off the ground. Gabriel (27) came it at 3 and played a fluent innings before guiding the ball to slip. The run rate was healthy with some nice shots being played before a mini collapse occurred with Tom (5), Rob (4) and Dan Eglestaff (5) getting out along with Gabriel to leave Petersfield 73-6 before Ben (13) and Josh (16) steadied the innings. Will (1), Alex (1 not out) and Oliver (6) pushed the total up to 118 which is now 4 games on the trot we have scored over a hundred which is a fantastic effort from the boys.
Hambledon had different openers than on Wednesday but they still got off to a flying start although only from 1 batsmen this time. Once the opener Gale retired for a well made 31 the Petersfield bowlers then turned the screw with some tight bowling from Alex (0-11), Tom (0-6) and Dan Eglestaff (0-14) kept the scoring down to 68-3 from 12th over. Then came the devastating spells of bowling from Gabriel (2-7) and Will (3-3) the later taking 3 in one over before Oliver (2-23) returned to replace Will (to great surprise from the coach and spectators) to clean up the last wicket. The last 6 wickets for 1 run in 3 overs to leave them 40 runs short of the Petersfield total.
As I said to the lads and the parents what pleased me more than anything else was not the win but the attitude of the lads. I know it is easier in the field when you are winning but everyone to a man was supporting the bowlers verbally and physically with some excellent fielding, catching (how did Gabe get to that catch) and backing up when the ball was thrown in. We looked like a team today which is a big plus for me and as was pointed out by a couple of the lads I could not stop smiling because of it as the hard work Paddy and I are putting in in training seems to be working, keep it up lads it was a joy to watch today.
Man of the match has to go to Will Grange for 2 over’s of accurate medium pace and a sharp catch which won us the match, honourable mentions to Gabriel and Josh.

Petersfield U15s vs Hambledon
After comfortable wins against Havant and Fareham, the U15s were brought down to earth with a bump, losing to Hambledon by 115 runs.
Bowling first against a free-scoring batting line-up, Petersfield’s bowlers stuck to their task, with Aaron Murray (4 for 27) the standout player. Cox (2), and Caddick and Newman, with one apiece, were the other wicket-takers.
Our fielding frailties came back to haunt us, with too many runs conceded through sloppy mistakes. In contrast to this, Friend, Caddick and White took three excellent catches.
In response, poor shot selection and a fatal lack of foot movement on a pitch with low bounce undermined our batting effort. Only Alex Thomas got his feet moving, batting sensibly for 19 in a losing cause.
Mention should be made, too, of a remarkable spell from Hambledon’s opening bowler, Prentice, who took 7 wickets for 4 runs in his 4 overs – all bowled. Basically, if we missed, he hit.

Petersfield U13s vs Hambledon B
On another very nice evening at the Heath Petersfield took on Hambledon’s B team.
Petersfield won the toss and chose to put Hambledon in to bat to give Petersfield a target to chase and also get first use of the new ball.
The opening batsmen for Hambledon then proceeded to make Petersfield regret this decision with both there openers retiring on 30 in very quick time indeed. Some tight bowling by Rob Schofield (1-13), Tom Pocock (0-8) and Will Morton-Scott (0-4) restricted the rest of the batsmen and they bowled around man of the match Ben Anscombe’s 4 overs in which he took 3-28 (two in one over) and Alex Squires who returned at the end of the innings to bowl a wicket maiden to finish with 1-18 off his 3 overs. Hambledon made 157-6 which was a great effort after the first 5 overs went for 57 runs with too many extras conceded for the managers liking although we had 2 or 3 of the lads carrying injuries which did not help with our ground fielding
Petersfield then batted with Dan Parry (31 retired) and Joe Mayall (20) put on 69 off 11 overs before Joe got out trying to push the scoring along. Josh Bird made 5 before being run out after a mix up with his partner. Matt Friend (11) played well in his first game for the Under 13’s with Rob Schofield (21) had Hambledon looking at the scoreboard quite a lot as the bowlers started to feel the pressure and concede to many wides and byes for the captains liking. Ben Anscombe came in to make a quickfire 5 but Petersfield fell 27 runs short. But for the 3rd game on the trot the lads made over 100 runs and if we can stop the wides, no-balls and byes from mounting up we can be very competitive this season.
Another very good effort from the lads and it is great to see the side progress each time we play which is always the aim of the coaches and the club. So onto the return game on Sunday at Hambleon and another close game played in the right spirit
