After comfortable wins against Havant and Fareham, the U15s were brought down to earth with a bump, losing to Hambledon by 115 runs.
Bowling first against a free-scoring batting line-up, Petersfield’s bowlers stuck to their task, with Aaron Murray (4 for 27) the standout player. Cox (2), and Caddick and Newman, with one apiece, were the other wicket-takers.
Our fielding frailties came back to haunt us, with too many runs conceded through sloppy mistakes. In contrast to this, Friend, Caddick and White took three excellent catches.
In response, poor shot selection and a fatal lack of foot movement on a pitch with low bounce undermined our batting effort. Only Alex Thomas got his feet moving, batting sensibly for 19 in a losing cause.
Mention should be made, too, of a remarkable spell from Hambledon’s opening bowler, Prentice, who took 7 wickets for 4 runs in his 4 overs – all bowled. Basically, if we missed, he hit.
